Welcome to our 13th Annual Sale!

Well, it was a tough year for both families. In

early December, Barb Downey was diagnosed

with Stage III rectal cancer. Then, right before

Christmas, Chuck & Kim’s son, Chase Kniebel,

was killed in a car accident. Not too long after

that, Chuck suffered a major aortic aneurysm.

So, where are we now? Barb had radiation &

chemo in Houston in January & February. She

then had major surgery in April. That was

followed by more chemo, the last of which will

be Monday after the production sale. Barb heads

back to Houston Nov. 12 for scans and a surgery

consultation. Chuck went through a miraculous

12 hour surgery, extensive rehabilitation, and

now Chuck, Kim & family are working towards a

new normal. All of this has necessitated some

fundamental changes in both operations,

including how we do our sale. Thus we’ve made

the jump to a video sale format.

We’ve heard over the years how important it is

to a lot of you to have bulls come through the

ring. However, we hope you understand that the

significant changes have left us no choice. The

bulls will still be penned on-site just like always.

But instead of coming through the ring, videos

will run on large TVs for your viewing. This is

how the heifers have sold for many years now,

so at least some of you will be familiar with this

format. For the rest of you, please be assured

that everything else will remain the same. We

still work very closely with the bulls and any

known temperament problems have already

been addressed with the knife.

So, life and business go on. Cattle prices are

down this year and corn remains about the

same. Does that mean you can’t make money

feeding? No. Good genetics still perform. Keep

your pencil sharp and your eyes open and

there’s opportunity. Premiums on the right grids

become more important every year.

With all that has happened this past year, we

still realize how much we have to be thankful

for. Our families are our foundation. Our kids are

integral parts of the operation and our parents &

siblings are always there for support and a

helping hand. We couldn’t do it without all of

them. Thank you Kneibel, Downey, Gilsdorf &

Carpenter families!

Finally, there’s a lot of other folks that help

make this whole process possible. Friendships

are what make life worth living; nothing brings

that more to light than a year like this past one.

We had friends & family help in every way

imaginable during busy & demanding times. At

the sale, we have friends out back, in the pens,

at the settlement table and less we forget, in the

stands! Thank you for your continued support

over these 13+ years. We are truly honored.

Those of you who are new to our sale, welcome.

We hope you’ll come to appreciate why 80%+ of

our cattle go to repeat customers.

We’re grateful for this chance to earn your

business. When we say we’re not happy

until you’re happy, we mean it!

The Star System On all our bulls, we put a box of stars at the bottom. This lets us take multiple affective EPDs along with what we know about the cow families and the conditions of that production year and summarize it all for you. In other words, if they’re a 4 star Calving sire, we know that the shape of that bull, his data & pedigree and his mother’s history all combine to make him one we wouldn’t hesitate to use on heifers. 3 stars means we’d use him on heifers UNDER SUPERVISION. Does this mean one star is a cow-killer? Absolutely not. We would NEVER sell anything we would not use in our own herds. PERIOD. One star calving ease means use on mature cows without a history of problems. For females, we’re taking longevity, udder structure, fertility under range conditions, mature size, fleshing ability, etc into account. That a bull gets 3 stars means he probably has a young dam. Carcass & growth follow the same principles.

Actual Performance vs. EPDs EPDs take into account performance & ancestry of many individuals across different production systems, climates, herds, etc. instead of just one individual’s performance in one herd in one set of circumstances in that particular year. Therefore, we consider EPDs a better indicator of that animal’s genetic abilities than actual performance. When we take weights, measure scrotals or scan for carcass traits, we have some bulls who are older than the average by quite a bit, and some that are younger. The breed associations take that data and adjust it using many variables and come up with a standardized number so that bulls can be compared on a more even footing. For example, what would this bull have weighed at 1 year old (365 days) given that he weighed 1325 when he was 400 days old coming off test. This tends to overcompensate younger bulls and penalize older bulls, especially in a herd’s comprised of earlier maturing cattle. This is why we recommend you look at EPD’s over actual performance. That is also why an older bull with an 1150 lb actual yearling weight might have a 1050 lb adjusted YW yet a higher YW EPD than a younger bull with a heavier ADJUSTED YW. Clear as mud?

Back by popular demand: Bulls Will Sell in Catalog Order!!!!

In order to make life easier for you, we are going to sell bulls in the same order they ’re printed in the catalog. Please do not read anything into the sale order itself. The order is dependent on who would pen with whom (and not fight!) and how the bulls fit on a page with any available pictures. It is not meant to imply that any one bull is better than another!

We are pleased to again broadcast the Kniebel Cattle Co. and Downey Ranch, Inc. Production Sale “live” over the Internet. AGAIN THIS YEAR: Proxy Bidding Available. This means you can put in your maximum bid ahead of the sale at your convenience. Then on sale day, the computer bids for you. NO ONE, not even DVAuction, knows what that your max is. If something happens to your connection or you can’t be in front of the computer, your bidding still gets done for you.

Example—You put in a proxy for $5000 on Lot 12. An opposing bidder drops out at $3700. You own Lot 12 for $3800. First Time Users:

Very nicely made bull with performance. Square topped and hipped, his dam has been a solid performer for us, with sons working as bulls and daughters performing in the herd. Add Thunder to the mix and you’ll want to keep the daughters around but still have steers to top the market. 107 WW ratio gives you those lbs. to sell!

Really good genomics, which brings his health during test into question. Top 15% for WW & YW with a top 5% Scrotal (fertility of daughters) and top 7% docility. With all that’s been going on weather-wise the last several years, put your faith in the num-bers. He’s super stout, deep quartered and has big feet and bone.

Top 10% for BW and HP genomically, means the calving ease & fertility is there. Now add the performance ratios & EPDs and you have a lot of grow to this bull. 109, 112, 117 WW, YW & ADG ratios made him a top performer in the pen. We love his cow family too. Another old fashioned pedigree that we love because it’s proven and solid function-ing. While not flashy numbers, he is bred for the quality of the females and at the end of the day, a cow that calves every year, early in the season and weans a nice calf trumps big weaning cows that don’t breed back.

Our other Calculator that so many ask for and for good reason. Old-school on the bottom side too with a consistent 10 year old dam. This pedigree, with so few recent progeny, makes it hard to move those EPDs. But he ratio’d 92 for BW while post-ing 104 on WW. Extremely high marbling too, ratioing 144! Attractive patterned too.

Sim-Angus Bulls This year, we’re offering you some Simmental genetics in an effort to bring you proven, homozygous black & polled genetics with hybrid vigor. Next year, you will see a few more too. We only tried out 10 straws and got 9 calves. Out of 5 bulls, we kept 3 (but lost one this summer to injury). Please note, you can’t compare their EPDs to the Angus or Red Angus bulls; rather, compare them against the averages on P. 29. They’re both easy calving and moderate sized with above average carcass quality. Both have proven dams. We think you’ll like them!

DRI is pleased to offer 30 bred heifers. They represent the top of our spring born heifer calves. To start with, we kept heifers that

were neither too big nor too small, were born in the 1st 1/2 of the season, had good temperaments, were good performers, and were structurally correct, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. When all was said and done, we had less than 1/2 the heifers left. We are offering you 1/2 of the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail. Synch ’ed, AI’d then cleaned up with calving ease Black Angus. The heifers have all their shots, have been dewormed, Bangs vaccinated & tested PI negative. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

DRI Bred Commercial Heifers

AGAIN THIS YEAR: THERE WILL BE A BASE BID ON ALL HEIFERS. We have always had a policy of honesty in all dealings. We are coming off of a 5 year drought that saw us downsize our herd significantly. We had good rains this past year and we’re in a position to cautiously expand our herds. Thus, we are setting a reasonable floor because they have great value to us. These are heart of our herd heifers. There are A LOT of heifers out there this fall. As belts tighten, known genetics become all the more valuable. Therefore, the base bid on bred heifers will be $2500. The base bid on open fall heifers is $1700.

DRI Fall Herd Cattle Feeding Results

We have fed almost all of our non-seedstock cattle out for many years now. Our emphasis on balanced selection has resulted in a very moderate cow herd that’s reproductively sound under real world conditions, such as those pictured above. But we’ve also selected for carcass characteristics that let us realize the profits from our efforts. We sell cattle on a grid, realizing premiums for quality grade, yield grade, and a program called NatureWell that requires specific handling protocols. Below are the summary data for our fall calves fed this past year and slaughtered in February & March of 2015. We’re proud that these cattle graded 100% Choice and up with a very high 70% qualifying for Certified Angus Beef or USDA Prime. All while posting a very good 2.7 Yield Grade (a measure of red meat yield after removal of excess fat). These falls do this consistently, year after year. You can feel good about adding proven, real world genetics like these to your herd. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to purchase hard-to-come by, true fall heifers from a program you can trust. You won’t be sorry.

Several years ago, we sold open fall heifers with much success. However, we don’t have a large, fall-calving herd.—only about 110

cows. We still receive several calls a year about fall heifers, so we’ve decided to make some available again this year. Because of the drought and our necessary reduction in herd size, we are also putting a floor under these, as we ’d love to keep them since rains have returned and grass is plentiful. Our fall herd is an extremely low-input herd. While we do not AI, we use the same natural service bulls as in our spring herd. They live year round on open range and both the cows and the heifers calve there with 1x/day checks only. Thus, calving ease is built in for you. We will sell 2 groups of solid black, predominantly Angus heifers and 1 set of F-1 Black Baldies. Bangs vaccinated, PI-BVD negative, wormed and with their pre-breeding shots, they’re ready to breed immediately! Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the “better” it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth. However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always better. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk val-ues could lead in some instances to udder problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the numbers the Association generates. We’re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association uses Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this number. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!).

The Red Angus Association is the only association that builds EPD’s from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD’S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want a negative BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for parent sires in the AAA and RAA as of September of the current year:

Understanding & Interpreting Data

It’s no secret that both operations are big believers in retained ownership of quality cattle. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of stacking high-quality genetics and handling and vaccinating your cattle properly, why not reap the benefits? If you’re willing to go one step further and identify those animals, the story gets even better. You need to know how your own cattle perform, even if you never anticipate retaining ownership. As seen below, money will be made on changing markets and grid premiums. Therefore, retained ownership will happen more with grid proven cattle. Let’s take a look:

Value of 550 lb calf @ 2.00 on Oct. 1: $1100.00

Avg. feeding costs with $3.50 corn (650 lbs of gain): $487.50

Freight & Interest (calf) $40.00

Death loss (ours is lower, but we’ll use 2%) $24.00

Total costs: $1651.50

Breakeven price for May marketing $1.37

Oct. 1 Pricing through USPB for May $137.00

With premiums WE normally garner, it’s still a winner WITH OUR FEEDING HISTORY. Your situation may be different. If calf prices crash or the market recovers, it would be worth revisiting.

Performance Data

BW—Bull’s birth weight as adjusted by the American Angus Association or Red Angus Association.

WW—Bull’s weaning weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 205 days

YW—Bull’s yearling weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days

Scrotal—Bulls scrotal circumference in centimeters adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days of age (1 year) Performance EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences)

CED- Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

BW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny when compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed.

WW & YW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning/yearling growth to his progeny compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed.

Milk-Also called Weaning Wt Maternal, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. In other words, it is that part of WW attributed to mi and mothering ability. It is compared to daughters of an average bull in the breed.

Scrotal-Expressed in centimeters, it is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to the progeny of an average sire in the breed. Available for BLACK ANGUS ONLY.

Stayability-The expected difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd at least 6 years. Since cows are usually only culled for being open before the age of 6, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Available for RED ANGUS ONLY.

Carcass EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences)

CW-Carcass weight, expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling-expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades.

REA-expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

BF or FT– expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

YG-predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units Black Angus ONLY

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. Includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Red Angus ONLY

Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers more than an indicator trait, it selects for producers’ desired response: pregnant heifers.

The ME EPD predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME). FOR THIS INDEX, THE LOWER THE NUMBER, THE BETTER!

HB & GM—Herd builder and grid master are expressed as differences in profitability per exposure. Example. Bull A has a 135 HB, bull B has a 100. The bull is kept for 5 years and breeds 30 cows per year for 150 sired calves. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Be the first to call and get a $50 credit. Bull A @ 135 X 150 calves =$20,250.00 Bull B @ 100 x 150 calves = $15000.00. The difference of $5250.00 favors bull A.

Simmental ONLY

All Purpose Index (API)- Evaluates sire for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Index units are in dollars per cow exposed.

Terminal Index (TI)- Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Index units are in dollars per cow exposed.
