It all began in 1996 when Mrs Sue Thompson, a specialist English, Drama and Music teacher took on the organisation of this huge event. It was originally known as the Kojonup Speech, Drama and Arts Festival; we dropped the art section in 2012, as the interest for this section had slowly diminished. It is now known as the Kojonup Speech and Drama Festival. It grew from a one day festival which involved about six schools to a two day calendar event for fourteen primary schools and eight high schools. Today we still run a two day event, one day for Primary which we had eleven schools participating and one day for Secondary with two schools participating. I have been fortunate enough to be part of this wonderful event for the last seven years. It all began, for me, with Mrs Thompson asking for some help and it has grown from there. And for those that know our Mrs T, when she asks for help it usually means well that‟s your job now!! The festival was always held at the Kojonup Memorial Hall but with the government funding building the extra rooms at our school in 2011 (currently the Pre-Primary room); we were able to move the event to the school. This has allowed us to have each year group in their own room. On Wednesday 10 th June we held our Primary Section; we had students from: Broomehill PS, Cranbrook PS, Frankland PS, Gnowangerup DHS, Great Southern Grammar, Katanning PS, Kendenup PS, Kojonup DHS, St Bernard‟s PS, St Patrick‟s PS and Tambellup PS. The festival was opened by Mr Peter Callaghan with final instructions given by Miss Morgan Dezotti. This year we had three rooms in operation, each having their own judge, scribes and MC who had to judge over 186 performances in total. This was a great result seeing as the Year 7 cohort has now moved to secondary. On Thursday 11 th June we had our Secondary Section; unfortunately we had two schools pull out last week which meant that it was us and Great Southern Grammar. We still had 40 performances. All students performed really well; I especially enjoyed hearing the Prepared Speeches, What ANZAC means to me. If was wonderful to hear the studentspoints of view. Well done to everyone who participated, I think that you are all amazing for being able to get up on stage and perform. All students performed extremely well which is a credit to their teachers, parents and the students themselves for being prepared for their presentation. I would like to thank Mrs Hill, Miss Hewett and Miss Caldas for all the work that they have done with their students. You should be very proud, they all did an amazing job. A HUGE thank you to the following people who helped us make the Speech and Drama Festival a success; without your help this special event would not be able to happen: To our judges, scribes and MC‟s: Emily Clifton, Deb Elliott, Vicki Webb, Narelle Cussons, Jane Trethowan, Ros Trezise, Julie Parker, Virginia Baker, David Forrester, Carol Nicholls, Sam O‟Halloran, Cush Prasser -Jones, Liz Leusciatti, Caroline Rex, Belinda Marsh and Julie Sullivan. To Sue Dawes and Cathy Durack who did an amazing job in the canteen with their wonderful helpers Michelle Moore, Nilla Rowe and Rosie Clews. To Warren Porter for everything that you do, always there when I need something moved, curtains hung, stages shifted, chairs collected, you name it he‟s available. To Jessica Chambers, Paetyn Benn, Bhreez Maihi Fore-Ratima, Marnie Walsh, Dana Knopka, Karlee Porter, Sophie Clarke, Emma Bellotti, Hannah Ramsden, Madelyn Marsh, Lucy Johnston, Taj Ramsden and Clancy Norrish. You should all be very proud of yourselves and the way you represented our school; you all dressed smartly and behaved exceptionally. Thank you to the parents for allowing these students to help out. Lastly thank you to everyone at KDHS who helped out in so many ways; you are all wonderful. Marcelle Howe, Coordinator NEWSLETTER 12 th JUNE 2015

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Welcome to the week Eight Newsletter. This week we have been proud to host the 20

th Anniversary, Special Edition of the Kojonup Speech and Drama Festival.

And what an event these two days have turned out to be. There is a long list of people who have given time (and cakes!) to see this event through but there is one who stands above the pack and deserves to be named – Mrs Marcelle Howe. Mrs Howe has once again led this project, coordinated the nominations, organised the running order AND made some of the soup. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in this most significant event and thank you to our Kojonup students who with all levels of ability, showed our visitors how good we can be. NAPLAN On-line Our school has been chosen as one of 42 trial schools to test the operation of NAPLAN testing on–line. To assist us in that, we will receive 25 new laptops before the end of the Term and a small amount of cash for incidentals. This trial will run over the second half of 2015 and then 2016. It is expected that some schools will believe they are capable of going fully „on-line‟ in 2017 and nationally all schools will be required to test on-line no later than 2020. Mr Trouchet and I attended a briefing on this program in Perth last week and have come back interested but perhaps still a little cautious! Getting the laptops is a real bonus and we are very grateful for those. Being involved in the trial offers us the opportunity to learn about this new process before we have to implement it. Some of this leads on to my next point… The future Two weeks ago Mr Trouchet and I attended the annual District High Schools Conference where the key note speaker was David Price, an internationally recognised futurist. Among his key messages were some very telling points for education – and some very obvious ones. The children we are educating today are the adults who will be running the country in 30 years; with the growth in on-line and work from home jobs, by 2020 (just five years away) 50% of new jobs in Australia will be freelance and contract; by 2029 the artificial intelligence available to be programmed into computers will exceed the power of human intelligence – computers are learning to repair themselves; on present trends, by 2030, 60% of the world youth population will not have a job! These and many others were thoughts that really pricked at my vision of the future. ‘Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.’ Swami Sivananda

FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet The 20

th Kojonup Speech and Drama Festival was an outstanding success due in no small regard to the efforts of Mrs

Howe. I understand that Miss Caldas was very pleased with the efforts of our secondary students and that the Year 10 boys should be singled out for special recognition. Reporting is well under way and reports will be sent home with students at the end of the term. Parents will be able to speak with class teachers early next term and discuss their child‟s progress. I have been most impressed with the quality of work which teachers are describing in reports which I have read so far. Some further messages from David Price at the DHS Conference were that we have a global economy now. For example architectural and legal work in the USA are being outsourced to India and other countries. The skills needed in this century are going to be creativity, problem solving and team work rather than the mere possession of knowledge. I‟m sure that regular visitors to the school would have noticed the completion of the brick paving upgrade. Hopefully the level paving will make tripping a thing of the past. And finally another quote from Thomas Edison. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

CANTEEN A huge thank you to Michelle Moore, Nilla Rowe and Rosie Clews for helping in the canteen on Wednesday 10

th June

and Thursday 11th June for the Speech and Drama Festival. We couldn‟t have done this without you; it was very much

appreciated. Sue & Kathy

CHAPLAINCY AT KDHS Friendship was the topic when Mrs Watson and the Year 3 class visited the chaplaincy room last week. The children read a story about two friends and one scooter and we talked about the concepts of hurt feelings, forgiveness, sharing and what makes a good friendship. The Year 3‟s then enthusiastically made things with and for their special friends and we pinned them on the board to be given out at the end of term.

Breakfast Club is going strongly and all are welcome on a Monday or Thursday morning before school. The Chaplaincy room is also usually open before school on Wednesdays for any students needing toast and a drink or just to say hi before school. The Chaplaincy room is also open at lunch times on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for high school students as a drop in “café” with toast and a milo that is proving popular, depending on the weather outside. Thanks to Mr Terry and the school farm eggs there will be the occasional cake and biscuits. Next week the craft area will be ready for high school students wanting to be creative at lunch time and there are always inside games on wet days.

Primary students are now requesting inside activities for wet and cold days and we are investigating a suitable venue for this on special days.

I can be contacted on 0429 323 025 or [email protected]. Thank you for your support. Vicki Webb

KOJONUP OCCASSIONAL CARE CENTRE The Kojonup Occasional Care Centre is looking for expressions of interest from families who would use the Centre after school and during holiday times for their children up to the age of 12 years old. The committee and staff are hoping to get this program underway after the completion of the new Daycare Centre later in 2015. (Have a drive by on Honnor Street as it is going up very quickly!) The new facility will have a room which can be utilised separately from the younger children and where homework could be completed. Again, this is just an expression of interest so the centre could construct a plan for care of this age group of children. Please contact Joelene at the Centre on 9831 0001.
