We have been studying an animal from the Zoo, which we are going to write a report on, present a talk about and create a Power Point presentation on. We were so lucky to see our chosen animal in real life, behaving the way it does in its natural habitat. It was very interesting to also read about the animals’ behaviour, conservation status and what different zoos and animal groups around the world are do ing to try to protect them. When we got to the zoo on Thursday, we split into groups to go and research our animal. This was followed by a delicious ice-cream treat and then a look in other areas of our choice. The gibbons were very entertaining to watch, as they showed off with their balancing and swinging tricks! At 5:00pm, we collected our luggage and trekked up to the Zoo Barn. A few of us wished we had listened more to Miss Coole’s advice, as we had some heavy and awkward bags to carry! We met our camp leaders, Chloe and Simone, who got us started on our first activity, Race to Save. This taught us about different animals, which are endangered, and the causes for their decline around the world. We then gobbled down our dinner, a sausage sizzle and salad. With our energy recharged, we split into two groups. One group went to the reptile room and learnt about different habitats of our native animals in Australia. We were lucky enough to pat a Shingle-Back Bobtail at the end. The groups switched over and we discovered the many different activities and methods the Perth Zoo do for enrichment for different animals. We were able to make “mouse bon -bons” for the Tassie Devils, which was a lot of fun! It was time to set up our beds and have a snack. Some of us were feeling pretty sleepy by this point, but we charged on, knowing that the night walk was ahead of us. Unfortunately the weather had been a bit rainy and overcast earlier, so most of the animals were hiding in their night quarters. We did get to see the elephants and cheetah though. Finally, 10:30pm had come and it was time to get ready for bed! Miss Coole and Mrs Cussons were quite excited that the old camp stretchers had been replaced by comfortable mattresses, which made for slightly more sleep than in previous years! 4:45am arrived far too quickly and a lot of primates, along with the lion, a possum and some crows, decided that it was time for us to wake up! We lay in bed listening to them until about 6:00am, and then we got up, ready for our new day. Breakfast was very quiet, and there were a few tired looking kids around! We packed up our bags and then went to feed the Tassie Devils their treats. They were super appreciative, and it was fascinating watching them rip open the cardboard rolls and crunch the mouse up, bones, tails and all!!! The rain suddenly hit, so we raced back to the barn to complete our final activity, team work as numbats, crossing the safe path. This required silent communication, which wasn’t too hard for most of us that morning! The camp leaders were very impressed with our school, when they listed off things we could do to help conserve the environment, and we kept saying, “We already do that!” After saying our goodbyes to Chloe and Simone, we put our gear back on the bus and had one final walk around the zoo. The nocturnal house had some very interesting animals in it! On the bus trip home, we played with our new goodies, bought from the Zoo Shop, and thought about all the fun things we had done and learnt about. We would like to thank Mr Trouchet for driving our bus, Mr Baker for being our extra helper and Mrs Cussons for driving the car with the Engel and coming along on her days off! The camp would not have been possible without your help. Miss Coole and the Year 4 Class NEWSLETTER 4 th December 2014

YEAR 4 PERTH ZOO EXCURSION

Last Thursday and Friday, 20th - 21

st November, the Year 4 class went to the Perth Zoo for an overnight excursion. We have been

studying an animal from the Zoo, which we are going to write a report on, present a talk about and create a Power Point presentation on.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PRIMARY – Jayde McIvor On behalf of the staff, students and wider Kojonup community I would like to offer condolences to Mrs Trina Hill and Mr Peter Callaghan on the tragic passing of their beloved spouses. We wish Trina and Peter well in this time of sadness. Our thoughts are with you both. Attendance As the end of the term is fast approaching, the number of incursion and excursions also increases. It is very important for students to remember that their attendance is vital to make many of these activities occur and when they are absent from school without an acceptable reason they are letting down their group, team or class. Kindergarten Orientation On Monday 24

th November it was wonderful to see so many young and eager faces arrive at our ECE centre in

preparation for Kindy 2015. On behalf of all the staff and students at KDHS I would like to welcome all the new and existing families attending next year. Transition We welcomed the current Year 6 & 7 students from St Bernard’s on Wednesday and Thursday last week to experience what it’s like to be in high school. The students joined with the KDHS classes and enjoyed tasters of each subject. All students must be commended on their excellent behaviour and positive encouragement to the new students. Well done! 2015 School Leadership Positions Student speeches were presented today. KDHS will have two School Captains (Year 10), two Deputy School Captains (Year 10) and two Primary School Captains (Year 6). The Year 10 2015 School Leaders will be announced at the Year 10 Graduation Dinner and the Primary School Leaders will be announced at the Presentation Night. REKK Performance Students from Pre- Primary to Year 6 have been invited to attend the REKK Christmas concert on Tuesday 9

th December

from 12:45pm to 1:45pm at the Kojonup Memorial Hall. All permission slips and payments much be returned to the classroom teacher by Monday 8

th December.

Presentation Night Presentation night will be held on Tuesday 16

th December at the Kojonup Memorial Hall, doors opening at 6:00pm. All

students are to be seated by 6:15pm for the concert to commence at 6:30pm. There will be a sausage sizzle as a fundraiser for the 2015 Year 7 Orientation camp from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. Assembly The next assembly will be hosted by the Pre-Primary Class, Friday 12

th December at 2.30pm in the Common Room.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL SECONDARY – Bob Trouchet Year 10 students will be travelling to Katanning as part of a transition program on Tuesday next week. They will be catching the Katanning school bus and participating in the program for the full day. They will need to be wearing their school uniform. Mr Ringrose has the Lunchtime Gym working well. The old library has been outfitted with a range of exercise and fitness equipment and it is open each day for the secondary students. Sporting equipment can also be borrowed from this location to be used on the oval or bituminised areas. Mr McDonald has the traditional trip to Bunbury organised and students have been given permission notes. Due to limited seating on the bus not everyone will be able to participate. Those who return their forms and money first will be able to book their place for the trip. This is a Good Standing event and students who do not have Good Standing on the date of the excursion will be unable to participate. The Year 9 and 10 students did a superb job of their assembly item “The Gruffalo” last Friday. The response from the assembled students showed that all the work to learn lines, get made up and wearing the costumes was worth the effort. Students are preparing for their Presentation Night items and I look forward to seeing what they can do on the Town Hall stage. The Year 10 students will be busy next week with Parfaits with the Chaplain on Monday, Katanning orientation on Tuesday and their Graduation Night on the Friday.

CANTEEN On Thursday 18th December the canteen WILL NOT be open for lunches.

We will be open for counter sales at recess and lunchtime. Sue and Cathy

LIBRARY NEWS The pick of the week for Lower Primary: ONE NIGHT By Penny Matthews & Stephen Michael King. On the first Christmas Eve, so the story goes, the animals were given a very special gift to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Ever since, at midnight on Christmas Eve, they remember and speak to each other to share their knowledge of what happened on that night. The pick of the week for Middle Primary: TEA AND SUGAR CHRISTMAS By Jane Jolly + Illustrated by Robert Ingpen Join Kathleen in the outback as she eagerly awaits the Christmas Tea and Sugar Train. Will she meet Father Christmas? Will she receive a Christmas gift from him? A delightful, heart-warming story that will intrigue, captivate and introduce readers to a slice of the past. The book is beautifully illustrated and includes a wonderful double fold-out image showing the shops inside all the carriages.

This is the last week of borrowing for all students. Can you please ensure that all Library resources are returned by the end of next week. Thank you.

PRE-PRIMARY BOAT RACES

The Pre Primaries have been very busy learning about pirates and the ocean this term. On Tuesday 18th November the

children had the much anticipated Boat Race. They had been busily making their boats during the previous week making sure that their boats had the most important parts required to make it a pirate boat e.g. a plank for the pirates to walk, a skull and cross bone flag, pirates scrubbing the deck etc. All of the Pre Primaries worked together on the day of the race and dug a very big hole in the sand pit ready for the boat race in the afternoon. Then they all loaded their boats with some treasure and prepared them for the big race. Some of the boats moved very fast, some were so slow that they did not even get to finish, other boats even went the wrong way and there were unfortunately a few ship wrecks. The children were cheering so much that Mr Callaghan came down to see what all the noise was about. After the boat race he very kindly washed off all the Pre-Primaries feet. Thanks Mr Callaghan.

GREEN TEAM – RECYLE BUS Representatives from the KDHS Green Team boarded the Recycle Bus last week. The purpose was to take the items collected by you and taken to school - household batteries, printer cartridges, mobile phones, stamps, spectacles, hearing aids and ring pulls to the places in town which collect them. Along the way we also collected the household batteries which are collected at IGA, the Shire and Home Hardware. We took the printer cartridges to the Post Office where Donna Clarke explained how the plastic was recycled and the ink was disposed of safely. Then on to the Shire Office where Loreen Greeuw told us how mobile phones are broken down into their plastic and metal components and recycled and how batteries are safely disposed. At Kojonup Auto Electrics Robyn Baily told us how spectacles are sent to third world countries and given to people who cannot afford to buy new ones. She also was able to take stamps which are sent to England and sold to stamp collectors. You can also take vehicle batteries to Auto Electrics and the plastic and lead are recycled. These services are done under the Lions banner. We then drove on to the Kojonup Transfer Station where we delivered the household batteries and saw how our recycled materials (paper, cardboard, plastics, tins, cans etc) are sorted, baled and stored before being taken to Perth and sold. We also saw lots of discarded fridges (which make excellent worm farms or veggie gardens) and cars parked on top of each other - a great space saving initiative. We would like to thank all the people who take the time to collect these items and encourage all of you to do the same, so that others can benefit from these items and they are prevented from adding to landfill. We also thank the shop owners in town who offer these services to us and thank Mr Terry for driving us all around the town. KDHS Green Team

WORMS FOR SALE For those of you wanting to utilise your fruit and vegetable scraps and turn them into something productive rather than putting them in the waste bin, worm farming could be for you. Worm castings and worm whizz provide your plants with valuable nutrients. Kojonup DHS Garden Gurus will assist you to set up your own worm farm and then for $5.00 provide you with some worms to start your worm farm. A worm farm can be made very simply and inexpensively from two polystyrene boxes. If you would like a worm farm demonstration, please phone the KDHS Office on 9831 2300, to book in to come to Garden Gurus at 2.30pm on Mondays which is held alongside the canteen at KDHS. If you would simply like to order some worms, please phone the school and place your order at the front desk. Worms can be collected on Tuesdays from the front office or at Garden Gurus on Monday afternoon. Cathy Wright for KDHS Garden Gurus, 0417 178 614.
