FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan The Winter Term has ended and we are all pleased to see the change in weather. I am fortunate to have got through Winter with little more than a sore throat but around me, students and staff, there have been a great many who have been unwell. Hopefully that is now all behind us! Well done Mr Ringrose for the coordination of the Monday afternoon cricket spectacular! The non-cricketing Mr Melville over did the bowling and is still carrying sore muscles! It was great to see parents along on the afternoon and to see so many kids getting enthusiastic about our National game. Monday afternoon was also our Kindy Open Day and I enjoyed meeting mums and a few dads who are new to the whole thing of ‘school’. I am sure many of you can remember the beginning of your own journey into the school system as a young and first time parent and the many concerns and anxieties you held. I am confident that the tremendous work done by our Kindergarten staff on Monday will have helped settle many of those concerns. If you happen to know of anyone planning to enrol their Kindy child here for 2016, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible as we are already developing staffing plans for 2016 based on our current and known enrolment figures. With the majority of our high school students away this week we have been seeing some tremendous examples of maturity and leadership coming from those still here. Many of our older students have been providing assistance into our primary classes and I have been overjoyed to see 14 and 15 year olds reading to and sitting with junior students, correcting their work, giving assistance and helping in P/Ed lessons. I hope you can all find some time over this break to share with your children and I will look forward to seeing them all again next Term.

FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde McIvor I cannot believe it is week 10 already! Although I have to admit I am enjoying the warmer days we are having as we move further in to spring. I would like to thank all the parents and students for their well wishes for my upcoming wedding, to Marcus, these school holidays. I look forward to returning to school in Term 4 as Mrs Hewson. KDHS Facebook Page It is with great delight that I can say the school has a Facebook Page! Mrs Malady has worked very hard to have it up and running with all the fantastic photos of all the recent events at KDHS. Please search Kojonup District High School and ‘like’ the page to make sure you stay up to date with all the happenings at KDHS. Sports Carnival and Kindy – Pre-Primary Sports Carnival The Sports Carnival will once again be held in Week 1 of Term 4, however the Jumps & Throws component will be held on Thursday 15

th and the Track & Field Events will be held on Friday 16

th October. This year the Kindy & Pre-Primary

Sports carnival afternoon will also be held on Thursday 15th October from 1:30pm onwards. Parents will be given more

information from classroom teachers at the end of this week. Hip Hop Week Week 9 saw the Southern Edge Arts team here again from Albany helped by locals Suzie Riley and Colin Clinch. The students were entertained with trampolining and dance moves as well as some traditional Indigenous painting of pebbles. We look forward to seeing the team back in Term 4.

Jumping Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk Thank you to all the parents who supported the incursion. It was wonderful to see nearly 100% of our students attend the performance and WOW it was very well received. With an educational message hidden behind the humour and drama of the play it was a great session and one not to be missed.

School Development Day School will commence on Monday 12

th October, 2015 for staff at KDHS. During this day staff will be analysing School

and Student data. Students will commence on Tuesday 13th October.

Safe and Happy Holidays Wishing all of the parents, staff and students a well-deserved break over these holidays! Rest up and I’ll see you all back bright and bubbly in Term 4.

FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet Year 8 and 9 students are currently on camp with Mr McDonald, Mr Terry and Ms Caldas. They are travelling in the Midwest and will visit Geraldton, Mount Magnet and places in between. Students in the past have had a great time and there is no reason to think this camp will be any different Many Year 10 students are undertaking a work experience week. This has been organised by parents due to Government changes over required insurance levels for participating businesses. KDHS is most appreciative of the efforts of both parents and businesses to provide this worthwhile experience for students. Years 8 to 10 students who are not participating in either camp or Work Experience have been working in Primary and Pre-Primary classes. I have been hearing some great reports about the students and the way in which they have been working with younger students. Well done. A reminder that I will be taking some Long Service Leave for the first half of Term 4 and will be replaced by Mrs Kate Fleay. And finally a quote from Clay P Bedford - “You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.”

Kojonup DHS attendance has fallen in the later part of the Term mainly due to the winter illnesses. Hopefully over the two week break the bugs disappear and everyone returns for Term 4 rested and healthy. If your child/ren have been absent please notify the school of their absences so the Attendance Data for Term 3 is correct. Thank you.

YEAR 3 STUDENTS ATTEND OPENING OF THE BLOOM FESTIVAL On Friday 11

th September, the Year 3 class were delighted to accept an invitation to attend the opening of the Bloom

Festival at Kodja Place. Students talked about how to stay mentally healthy through ‘Act, Belong, Commit’ and made a pledge/promise to take an action of their own choice. They enjoyed looking at the displays, flowers and craft. Each student painted a colourful flower which will be used in a display. Tracy Cox and Alison Watson were particularly pleased with how politely the students listened to the speeches. Thank you to the Bloom Festival for including KDHS students; we enjoyed our excursion and were surprised and very happy to be given a gift of a water bottle, balloon and wrist band to remind us of how important it is to ‘Act, Belong, Commit’.

STARGAZING WITH KINDY & PRE-PRIMARY DADS On Thursday 17

th September we invited our Dads to Kindy for a sausage sizzle, ice cream and star gazing. We were

thrilled to spot the craters on the moon!! The night was clear, full of stars and perfect for telescope viewing. Many thanks to all the Dads who came along and a special thank you to those who brought telescopes.
