President’s MessAGe An old joke: A Jewish man is marooned on a deserted island for years. He’s discovered by a passing ship, and he shows his rescuers around the island who are understandably curious to see what he has built to survive. He shows them his house, his workshop, and his two synagogues. “But why do you need two synagogues?” the rescuers ask him. “One is the synagogue where I pray,” he says. “And the other one is the synagogue I’ll never set foot in again.” So, why do Jews leave their congregations? There are plenty of articles about the subject and some of the most common reasons include: • Dissatisfaction with leadership, either secular and clergy • Cliques and personalities • Too Reform or insufficiently Reform • Incorrect posture on political issues, domestic and Israeli • Not fulfilling needs • Religious and spiritual needs change • Relocating for job or family I always feel a sense of loss on several levels when a long-time member leaves. I feel pretty sad that friends with whom I’ve worked and socialized are no longer working for the same things. I feel a loss for our congregation. And I feel that the departure of a strength of the larger Jewish world is diminished. Really? The whole Jewish community? Dr. Gerhard Falk, author and professor, wrote:

“It is also for these reasons that we have so many small congregations of folks who were excluded in a

congregation to which they belonged previously. Seeking to solve this dilemma, such Jews form new

congregations which are often financially unable to sustain themselves.

Our children see all this, of course. Therefore they avoid synagogues and the Jewish religion, call them-

selves “secular” Jews, if Jews at all, and guarantee that the third generation will have forgotten us

as we shrink until we vanish.”

More importantly, what should we do about this at our local level? And by “we” I mean the Beth Sholom congregation, not just the Rabbi or the Board of Directors. First, we should try to understand the reasons why people leave. We should respect the feelings and con-cerns of our friends who have chosen to depart our congregation. We have to clinically look at ourselves and see how things could have worked out differently. If we are doing something wrong, we must try and fix it. We can’t be all things to all people, but we shouldn’t be afraid to change if we can do so without compromising ourselves or our overall efforts. Second, we should always, always maintain our open doors. We’ve had members leave for a few years and return. People often leave because they change, but change doesn’t stop. Things that fade in importance at one point in life can take on renewed meaning further down the road. If former members want to re-turn we must never create obstacles: real or perceived. I was talking to a Rabbi I’d met a couple of years ago and we were discussing the Jews in his area of Florida that weren’t affiliated with any congregation. He observed that while they didn’t join, they “were glad to know that the synagogue was there”. I don’t know anyone who has left our congregation who doesn’t still want us to be successful in building a strong Jewish community. No Jew –whatever their reason for leaving – would be happy if Beth Sholom Temple were to close-up shop. To build and strengthen our congregation we have to support the needs of the members that are already here, but we can’t forget about those who have left. We are all Jews living in the Fredericksburg area. Ultimately we need each other.

rAbbi’s MessAGe Rabbi Meir would say, “A person is obligated to recite 100 blessings

daily.” - B. Menachot 43b

I often feel as though many people with whom we interact carry an over-whelming sense of entitlement. Many people behave as though the world owes them something. All of the bad occurs at the hand of someone else; for all the good, they deserve the credit. As humans, we love to point fingers and cast blame. We love to shrug and smile when things land in our favor. We have just come through the difficult journey of the High Holy Days, and Yom Kippur. We have been absolved of sin. Thank God, we have been written and sealed for an-other year.

This is not a message of Tshuvah, repentance, however, I do wish to ad-dress the blessing of accountability. During our High Holy Days, I spoke about how we can look at White Space as blessings in our lives. Conversely, blessings can serve as the White Space in our lives. The rabbis of the Talmud taught us to be conscious of our behaviors, and to take accountability of the blessings in our lives.

We often take more than we give. That is our nature. We are sometimes negligent of other peo-ple who selflessly give. We have trouble acknowledging and appreciating the hard work other people put in to make our world better. It seems we have forgotten the most basic prayer: “Thank you.”

A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated Rosh Hodesh MarCheshvan, the new month of MarCheshvan. We are taught that we call this month mar, because of the bitterness (like maror, the bitter herbs) that we feel in a month that does not have any holidays. I am also feeling the bitterness of this month, be-cause we have just finished a fabulous High Holy Day season, yet I think we are amiss.

We are amiss, because we have not yet said thank you. There are many people who went out of their way to provide an amazing High Holy Days for us. I am only going to mention a few people by name, because I will, undoubtedly miss someone, if I go further. For the others, I will speak in broad strokes. Please know that my intention is to be thankful for these people as blessings; to show appreciation to all of them for their undying dedication.

To our President, Vice Presidents, Board Members, and Members at Large, thank you for all you do to ensure that out BST runs as a finely tuned machine. Speaking of finely tuned machine, thank you to Margaret Rice, our Office Manager, who goes above and beyond for all of us.

Thank you to our Ushers, our Sisterhood, those who support our Building, Landscape & Administra-tion; thank you to all who participated in our Break Fast. The building looked great, and the food was amazing!

Thank you to Lou Berman, of VP of Religious Life and Education. He, along with the Ritual Com-mittee support, took care of everything behind the scenes. They enabled everything to flow seamlessly.

Thank you to all who participated in the construction of our Sukkah. What a wonderful Festival we had; from the first night service, to the Shabbat in the Sukkah, to the Young Professionals event, and the Interfaith Clergy Ministerial Luncheon we hosted. Sukkot was a great success!

Forgive me, as I am certain I am missing some people; if I have, thank you for all that you do for BST. I am certain that, if we are to count participant heads as blessings for the High Holy Days, we have well over 100 blessings in this day. For all of you, and for that, I am thankful.

We also remember the following residents of the town of Nymburk, Czechoslovakia, who were detained in Kolin, then deported to concentration and extermi-nation camps by the Nazis on June 12, 1942, and who would have celebrated birthdays this month.

Shopping Cards (formerly known as Gift Cards)

Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to remind you of two fabulous ways to make donations to Beth Sholom Temple with no out of pocket expense. 1) the shopping card (shopwithscrip.com) program. 2) Amazon Smile The first one has been around for years but very few of us are using it. You can buy several types of shopping cards from Ellen Grady at Sunday bagel bar. Better yet, do it online and choose from over 700 stores, big box stores, restaurant chains and online retailers. Just about anywhere you go in Central Park or South Point or Aquia for food, clothes, electronics, gas, movies, book stores, sporting goods, home & garden--everything! Go to www.shopwithscrip.com/shop to browse them. The donation rate ranges widely:

2.5% from Walmart

4% at Giant (alas Wegman’s does not participate)

6% at Walgreens and CVS

10% at Macy’s

10% at Chipotle and other restaurants

13% at LL Bean, J. Crew and Lands End You can get physical cards or electronic coupons to use from your phone, tablet or PC.

Think about how much you spend on these items. $500 per month? $1000 per month? Multiply by a conservative 5% and then by 100 families. $30,000 to $60,000 to the temple annually. Even if we each just did a fraction of our spending this way the benefit is great. Amazon Smile You can support Beth Sholom Temple financially by shopping on Amazon.com If you use Smile.Amazon.com and select Beth Shol-om Temple of Fredericksburg as your charity of choice, 0.5% of your purchases will be donated to BST. If you use Amazon, how much do you spend annually? Don’t keep track? Here’s a hint. The average is $1500. Guess when most of that is spent? Between now and January. So I urge you to make the small extra effort to go to Amazon Smile and select Beth Shol-om Temple of Fredericksburg as your charity of choice. The key is to go to the Smile page first before you shop. You can still use Prime. So let’s do some simple math: $1500 per year X 0.5% X 100 families is $7500 per year to Beth Sholom Temple. That’s in addition to the shopping card purchases above. And if you buy Amazon gift cards on ShopWithScrip before you shop on Smile, you increase that to 4.5%! With a little effort we can start raising much needed funds for our congregation. Even if you use Amazon Smile to donate to a different charitable organization, you are doing a great thing. I'll call that a win for BST. Please make the effort and contact Ellen Grady if you have questions at 540-370-4397 or at her email address: [email protected]

ONEG SHABBAT POLICY & Oneg Schedule

ONEG SHABBAT GUIDELINES Here at Beth Sholom, members are given the mitzvah

and privilege of hosting the Oneg Shabbat. The Oneg pro-vides us with the opportunity to delight in Shabbat, to-gether in community. The Oneg is also our first impression for guests to Beth Sholom Temple. It is our honor to make it a warm and welcoming event in our congregational home. You are encouraged to take ownership of this hon-or. Some things you can do to make Oneg more fun and inviting are: incorporate a theme – is there a holiday com-ing up? Or you might consider referencing the Torah por-tion for the week through a creative use of food, or even using your team’s Oneg to thank a committee, or just cel-ebrate the Temple family in a special way! Please use the guidelines below when considering your upcoming Oneg.

1. The list of Oneg Family assignments is available on the website, and here, in the Kol Yonah.

2. If you are NOT able to participate in your assigned Oneg, please notify the lead family of your group so appropriate arrangements may be made (lead family, please ask your fellow team members about taking over if you need to switch). It is your responsibility to switch with another family, and to inform the office of this change.

3. Prior to the Oneg, contact all team members to discuss who will bring the necessary items and other refreshments. Necessary Items: Challah, Kosher Red Wine, Kosher Grape Juice; Refresh-ment Suggestions: Fruit & Veggie Tray, Dips & Cheeses, Cookies & Cakes, Beverages

4. Try to arrive 30 minutes prior to service to set up; see the website at http://www.bstva.org/onegs.html for full instructions on set-up.

5. Clean up by taking dirty linens home for washing and either take food home or store appropriate left-overs in the refrigerator and freezer for re-freshments after Saturday morning service. A cleaning team will come in on Friday evenings af-ter Oneg to take care of washing dishes, vacuum-ing, and taking out the garbage. Please visit the website at http://www.bstva.org/onegs.html for additional instruction and suggestions.

Thank you!
