KONDUCT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Compound Storage
The compound should be stored in closed containers between 5°C and 35°C indefinitely. Ambient temperatures of between 15°C and 25°C are ideal for KONDUCT application, and pre-conditioning within these temperature ranges will aid application.
Surface Preparation
All surfaces to receive KONDUCT should be free of scale, rust, paint, dirt and oil. Wirebrushing and solvent degreasing are among the recommended procedures.
KONDUCT can be used in contact with all normal pipe materials. However, when applying KONDUCT to aluminium, KONDUCT eich primer APP-5 should first be applied.
Thinning
Thinning of KONDUCT compound is not normally requried, however a very small percentage of water (100ml) may be added if material is found to be abnormally stiff.
Application/Curing
1. It is preferable that the surface is at an atmospheric temperature between 5°C and 35°C. It should not be applied at temperatures above 35°C or initial bond could be affected.
2. To facilitate initial bonding during application, the surface can be moistened with water.
3. A Traceway channel system may be used or compound may be applied by trowel or by gloved hand e.g. fillet installation or at valves, pumps etc.
4. KONDUCT requires curing. During the curing period it is important to ensure that KONDUCT does not get wet. External lines must be protected against rain damage. Traceway channel provides good protection if the tracer is located on the top of the pipeline.
5. If allowed to air dry, KONDUCT is self curing. For faster drying, allow to air dry for 8 hours after which time low pressure steam should be passed through the tracer at 104°C for a further 4 - 8 hours.
6. If applied during freezing conditions, the tracer line should be heated up to approx 35°C to prevent the freezing of the water content of the KONDUCT.
Methods of Application
Application varies dependant upon the complexity of the structure. Recommended methods include trowel, gloved hand and strapped encapsulation. KONDUCT compound can be used with all normal pipe mate-rials, however aluminium and galvanised steel react with the compound in moist conditions, which has a tendency to weaken the bond. To counter this reaction, a suitable heat resistant passivating primer should be applied prior to the application of KONDUCT. Alternatively, the units can be securely strapped to over-come any adhesion weaknesses.
Repair
Any section that has been damaged can be repaired by applying and curing a new layer of compound.
Health & Safety and Handling
KONDUCT is safe to use, but being slightly alkaline, eye goggles and gloves are recommended to be worn during application. Spillages of KONDUCT should be removed with detergent solution.
KONDUCT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Installation of Traceway System
1. Traceway should be applied after the steam tracers have been tested and onto a leak free system.
2. Fill the Traceway with KONDUCT and remove excess using a forming tool to accommodate the heating cable.
3. Position Traceway over the heating cable and band tightly to the pipeline.
4. Remove excess KONDUCT which will be extruded from the sides of the Traceway.
5. Cure as directed above before applying weatherproof thermal insulation sized to accommodate pipeline plus Traceway systems.
Protection
KONDUCT must not be allowed to get wet prior to or after curing - after which time it must be immediately covered with protective lagging. External installations must be protected against rain during application.
