Department Activity for the Academic Year 2018-2019
PROGRAMME – 1
Special lecture on „Plant Intelligence: Mind without Brain‟
PG and Research Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College have conducted Association Meeting on 06/08/2018. The meeting was
started with prayer and Ms. Monica of II M.Sc., Botany welcomed gathering.
Dr. V.Balasubramaniam, Principal and Head Department of Botany,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College delivered the presidential address. Ms.
Monica and Mr. Gowtham took oath as student secretary and student joint
secretary of the department. The resource person Dr.T.Muthukumar, Assistant
Professor, Department of Botany, Bharathiar University delivered a special
lecture on „Plant Intelligence: Mind without Brain‟. The lecture dealt about how
plants are interacting with each other and with other living organisms. Plant
symbiotic association and mutual understanding between plants and
microorganism were discussed. In addition, how plants are protecting
themselves from other organisms, how plants are adapting themselves in diverse
environment, allelopathy effect, morphological modifications etc was discussed
and students were eagerly interacted with resource person. Finally, vote of
thanks was proposed by Mr.Gowtham of III B.Sc., Botany. Staff, students and
research scholars of Botany and other departments attend and benefitted. The
programme was ended with national anthem.

PROGRAMME – 2
National Level Training Programme on „HPLC Technique‟
PG and Research Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College organized one Day National Level Training Programme on HPLC
technique on 20/09/2018, sponsored by Indian Science Congress Association,
Coimbatore chapter. The programme was with formal invocation and the
gathering was welcomed by the programme organizing secretary
Dr.R.Thirugnanasampandan, Assistant Professor in Botany. Dr.C.A. Vasuki,
Secretary & Director delivered the presidential address followed by
Dr.V.Balasubramaniam, Principal and Head of the department of Botany
felicitated the programme and highlighted the importance of HPLC in Biology
especially in botanical research. Chief executive officer Dr.V. Chinnsamy and
Dean, Academic cum R&D felicitated the programme and shared their views
about applications of HPLC in various fields like analytical chemistry, natural
products purification, etc. Resource person Mr. Vinothkumar, Amkette
Analytics Ltd, Mumbai delivered the lecture on instrumentation, working
principle, applications and trouble shooting of HPLC in morning session.
During afternoon session participants were trained with HPLC instrument and
sample injection injected and result analysis. Critical steps like solvent
selection, sample preparation, column washing, data interpretation and
instrument maintenance, etc were taught to the participants by the resource
person. A total of ninety participants including PG students, Ph.D., research
scholars and faculty members attended and benefitted. Finally, Dr.K.Karthika,
Assistant Professor in Botany proposed the vote of thanks.

PROGRAMME – 3
Special lecture on „Science behind the traditional knowledge on
healthcare of women‟
A special lecture on “Science behind the traditional knowledge on
healthcare of women” was arranged on 25.09.2018 by the Department of Botany,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College, sponsored by Indian Science Congress
Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter.
Dr. P. Sumathi, Organizing Secretary and Assistant Professor of Botany,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College welcomed the gathering.
Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal and HOD, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College highlighted the importance of the focal theme “Traditional knowledge and
he stressed about the Science behind our Indian Culture. In the first session, Smt.
Sangitha Varier, South Zonal Secretary of Ekal Abhyan, Coimbatore delivered a
lead lecture on the focal theme “Science and our Culture” with simple examples
which we practice it routinely in our day to day life. Information‟s she shared were
very informative and interesting especially for women students. She also
highlighted the traditional uses of betel leaf, tulasi, safron, vilvam, etc. She also
explained the therapeutic properties of flowers of different species such as
Jassminum grandiflorum, Michelia champaca, Hibiscus rosa sinensis, Pandanus
amaryllifolius, etc., and their uses for curing various diseases.
In the next session, Smt. Lakshmi Suryanarayan, an active Social worker of
Mahila Wing of Ekal Abhiyan, Coimbatore addressed on the topic “Management
of Anaemia through home remedies”. She told many informations on anaemia,
their cause and side effects. Finally she described the home remedial measures
followed to prevent anaemia. Two hundred and ten women participants from
various departments participated in this programme and got benefitted. Dr. K.
Thenmozhi, Organizing Secretary and Assistant Professor of Botany proposed vote
of thanks.

Workshop on „Plant Microtechniques‟
The Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College
(KASC), Coimbatore organized a One day workshop on „Plant
Microtechniques‟ on 04.10.2018, sponsored by Indian Science Congress
Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter.
In the inaugural session, Dr. S. Jamuna, Organizing Secretary of the
workshop and Assistant Professor of Botany, KASC welcomed the gathering
and highlighting the importance of plant microtechniques. Dr. V.
Balasubramaniam, Principal and Head Department of Botany, Dr. V.
Chinnusamy, CEO, KASC, Dr. S. Paulsamy, Treasurer, Coimbatore Chapter,
Dean, Academic and R&D KASC, Dr. K. Arumugasamy, Associate Professor
of Botany (Retd.), KASC have felicitated the function by giving valuable
suggestions about microtechniques. Dr. P. Mehalingam, Assistant Professor of
Botany, V.H.N. Senthikumara Nadar College, Virudhnagar delivered the special
lecture on “Microtechniques‟. In his lecture he explained the technical aspect on
the preparation of permanent microscope slides from living materials and
explained the various aspects of microtomy such as fixing, dehydration,
infiltration, embedding, staining and mounting and their importance in the field
of pharmacogonosy. In the afternoon session, he gave the hands-on training on
the preparation of permanent slide. Participants were actively involved and
interacted with the resource person.
Sixty seven participants from KASC and other colleges such as Nehru
Arts and Science College, Dr.N.G.P. Arts and Science College, PSGR College
for Women, Coimbatore and Vellalar College for Women, Erode have attended
the function. The deliberations of the workshop are most useful for them. Dr. K.
Karthika, the another Organizing Secretary of the programme and Assistant
Professor of Botany, KASC, proposed vote of thanks.

conservation‟
The Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College,
Coimbatore organized a special lecture on 14.12.2018, sponsored by Indian
Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter. The meeting was
started with prayer and Ms. Monica of II M.Sc., Botany welcomed gathering.
Dr.V.Balasubramaniam, Principal and Head Department of Botany, Kongunadu
Arts and Science College delivered the presidential address and Dr.S.Paulsamy,
R&D Dean, Kongunadu Arts and Science College felicitated the gathering.
Dr. T. Pullaiah, Former Professor and Head, Department of Botany, Sri Krishna
Devaraya University, Anantapur (AP) delivered a lecture on „Biodiversity of
Eastern Ghats and its conservation‟. In his lecture he highlighted the importance
of Eastern Ghats in terms of their services and providing ecological security and
its conservation strategies. Eighty two participants from our college have
attended the lecture. The deliberations are most useful for them. Finally, vote of
thanks was proposed by Mr.Gowtham of III B.Sc., Botany. Staff, students and
research scholars of Botany and other departments attend and benefitted. The
programme was ended with national anthem.

Workshop on
“Cell Culture Techniques”
One day workshop on “Cell Culture Techniques” was conducted on 11.03.2019
by the Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College sponsored by the
Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter.
Dr. K. Sowndhararajan, Organizing Secretary and Assistant Professor of Botany,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College welcomed the gathering. Dr. N. Nagarajan,
Associate Professor of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College honored the
resource person with a gift. Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal and HOD, Kongunadu
Arts and Science College presided over the function. His speech mainly focused on
the importance of animal cell culture techniques in relation to the plant science
research field. Dr. S. Paulsami, Dean R & D, Kongunadu Arts and Science College
felicitated the workshop.He clearly explained the history of some important cancer
cell lines and the cytotoxicity effect of plant extracts.
The resource person, Dr. P. Arulselvan, Managing Director, SCIGEN Research
and Innovation Pvt. Ltd., Thanjavur delivered lecture on the topic “Animal Cell
Culture Techniques and Their Applications”. This lecture was very useful for budding
researchers. He provided many information regarding the basics of cell culture
techniques and emphasized applied aspects of cell culture research. In addition, he
pointed out different types of cell lines and pros and cons of cell culture research. In
the workshop session, observation of animal cells, preparation of cell culture media
and other reagents for cell culture, subculture of cells and counting the cells were
trained to participants.
Dr. K. Karthika, Assistant Professor of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College proposed vote of thanks. A total number of 55 participants which include
research scholars and staff members of Department of Botany attended the
programme. From this workshop, participants gained more practical knowledge in
connection with basic cell culture techniques.
