Circus Challenge On Thursday 7th March we will have Circus Challenge visit the school. On the day, the children will take part in a 1-hour performance show followed by a workshop to teach the children various circus skills. The school will be subsidising some of the cost but there will be a $5.00 per student fee charged. If you are eligible for CSEF Funding payment may be made through this program. Could all money be sent to school by Friday 1st March. Parent Teacher Interviews Thank you to all the parents who took the opportunity to attend parent teacher interviews last week. If you weren’t able to attend last week, please see your child’s teacher to arrange a time to catch up. Every Day Counts – School Attendance We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. This would mean that by Year 10 they would have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind such as speaking with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to catch up. If your child is reluctant to come to school, talk to the teacher about this so that you can come up with a plan of how to manage this together. Bus Travellers Children who travel on the bus to and/or from school need to bring a note for their teacher if they are not going to be on the bus or are going home with friends. Same goes for students who don’t normally go on the bus and are going home with friends on the bus, you need a note. It is essential that we know how, or where, your children are going home. Time is wasted looking for children who are not on the bus when we haven’t been informed. If it’s a last-minute decision, could parents/carers please wait for your children at the bus stop so they can be marked off the roll accordingly. Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to the families who already do this. Labour Day There will be no school on Monday 11th March as it is a public holiday for Labour Day.

Zone Swimming On Monday 18th February we had 10 students compete in the Kerang District Schools Zone Swimming Trials. Maddie W and Riley made it through to the Mallee Zone Trials in Swan Hill on Monday 25th February. While at the Mallee Zone Trials, Maddie W competed in a freestyle relay which came first and Riley’s relay team came third. Maddie W will now compete at Swan Hill again for the Mallee Zone. Reading Tips for Parents Once is not always enough Encourage your child to re-read favourite books and poems. Re- reading helps kids read more quickly and accurately. Dig deeper into the story Ask your child questions about the story you've just read. Say something like, "Why do you think Clifford did that?" Take control of the television It's difficult for reading to compete with TV, iPads and video games. Encourage reading as a free-time activity. Be patient When your child is trying to sound out an unfamiliar word, give him or her time to do so. Remind to child to look closely at the first letter or letters of the word. Pick books that are at the right level Help your child pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your child lots of successful reading experiences. Gently correct your young reader When your child makes a mistake, gently point out the letters he or she overlooked or read incorrectly. Many beginning readers will guess wildly at a word based on its first letter. Talk, talk, talk! Talk with your child every day about school and things going on around the house. Sprinkle some interesting words into the conversation, and build on words you've talked about in the past. Amanda Bradford

Fancy Sugar with That?

Can you imagine eating 13 teaspoons straight out of the sugar bowl? l know that seems crazy, but that is what you are doing when you drink a 600ml flavored DARE Iced Coffee Mocha! A small Prima juice box will give your child over 4 teaspoons of added sugar! In Australia, 1 in 4 children and 1 in 2 adults are overweight and/or obese. We also have high rates of tooth decay in Loddon and Gannawarra Shires. Removing sugary drinks from your regular diet can help reduce the risk of obesity and tooth decay. To cut your added sugar intake from drinks:

• Make water your drink of choice and save the sweet stuff as a treat. • Check nutrition labels: every 4g of sugar = approximately 1 teaspoon of sugar. • Aim for less than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day for females and less than 9 teaspoons of added

sugar for males per day.

Here’s the scoop on the number of sugar-loaded teaspoons in some popular drinks. Shocked by how they stack up? We are, too!
