e-Learning Solutions

hbmeu.ac.ae

Introduction

The purpose of this practice is to:

• provide solutions to the faculty in

order to maintain a learning

objects repository

• reuse the existing learning objects

• add multimedia in their learning

objects

• digitize their own learning objects

using the authoring tools

Studio• Record Lecture• Podcasts• Live Streaming

LCMS/LO Repository• LO Repository• Contribute LOs• Search LOs

VLE• Search LO Repository• Use LOs in Courses

Authoring Tools• Create LOs• Create Activities

hbmeu.ac.ae

Introduction

Previously:• Costly Process: High e-Learning course development cost

• Scattered Content: No centralized learning objects’ repository

• Non-reusable: e-Learning courses were not reusable

• No Videos: No educational videos & recorded lectures in the courses

• No Streaming Media: No live video streams & podcasts in e-Learning

• No Faculty Contribution: Faculty couldn’t author nor contribute the

learning objects

hbmeu.ac.ae

Introduction

Carried Out Activities• Learning Content Management System (LCMS): Implemented

centralized repository for learning objects

• Learning Objects (LO) Breakup: Broke down existing courses into reusable

learning objects (2,000 LOs)

• Studio: Setup a production studio for recording of videos, podcasts and live

streaming

• Training: Conducted faculty training on the LCMS & Authoring Tools

• Authoring Tools: Acquired easy to use tools to produce interactive content

Best Practices Theme of the Year:

“Adding Value to Customers”

Relevance

• Ease of Access: Faculty can search and add the LOs to their courses directly from the VLE

• Search: Meta tags made it easier for the faculty to search the learning objects in the repository

• Reusability: LO breakup allowed the faculty to start reusing LOs from existing courses in their courses which saves time and cost of producing new LOs

• Studio: Faculty and staff can easily come and record educational videos, messages and connect with the learners by creating podcasts and live streams

• Self LO Production: Faculty can easily create learning objects using the authoring tools

Technology-enhancement in learning and teaching

• Latest Technologies: Using HTML5, we are able to run our digitized

content on all platforms, including iPads

• Virtual Backgrounds: Used Chroma technology to create virtual

studios in video lectures

• Interactive Courses: Added interactivities, games and simulations,

so that the courses become more engaging and interesting

• Multimedia Content: Enriched the learning objects with multimedia

elements such as videos, audios and graphics

Technology-enhancement in learning and teaching

Latest Technologies: Used HTML5 to develop platform independent Los. Can also work on iPads as shown below

Virtual Backgrounds: Used Chroma technology to create virtual studios in video lectures

Innovativeness

• Infographics: To make learning objects more user interactive and engaging, we are using interactive Infographics

• RSA Animations: To visually describe and illustrate certain process, RSA type, story telling animations are used

Innovativeness

• Touch Devices: Attached the Sympodium with studio equipment, camera and Tricaster, for lecture & whiteboard capture

Applicability and possibility of duplication

Can be integrated into the existing systems• LCMS is fully integrated with the eCampus/VLE

Can be replicated in other activities or divisions across the

institution• LCMS application is being used as a course files management

system• Studio can be used to conduct talks shows, debates, group discussions

etc.

Can be replicated in other activities or divisions across other

institutions• LCMS can be shared across all institutions and universities to share

learning objects and courseware

Efficiency and Effectiveness

Effectiveness:• Made course content available for the users across all platforms• Broke big courses into smaller reusable learning objects• Placed all learning objects at one centralized repository• Gave faculty one window solution to search and use the learning

objects• Provided the means in creating the educational multimedia

Efficiency:• Faculty can now quickly search and use learning objects within the

VLE• The faculty can now easily create new courses from the existing

learning objects in a very short time• In-house development of educational videos and learning objects

has reduced the vendor cost and the process is much faster

Efficiency and Effectiveness

All learning objects at one centralized place

I am confident that this repository will really help us to develop effective courses.

- Prof. Moustafa HassanDean, e-School of Health & Environmental Studies

“ ”I would like to thank you all for your collaborative effort in establishing an effective and efficient digitization process.

- Dr. Khalid SabryPostgraduate Program Director, School of e-Education

“ ”In-house development of learning objects reduced the vendor cost

Results

Financial Outcomes• Low cost In-house video production• Low cost LO development by using the authoring tools

Non-financial Outcomes• LO breakup helped reusing all previously developed learning

resources– 92 courses were broken into 2000 reusable LOs

• Usage of studio facilities at remote locations – 5 events were recorded outside the studio

Manage the change

LCMS Pilot Launch:LCMS was launched in phases. First, a one month pilot was initiated.

LO Breakup:All previous courses were broken into learning objects and uploaded into the LCMS.

Training:End users were trained on the system and the authoring tools. They were provided with the training videos as well.

Studio Launch:A studio tour was arranged for the staff to familiarize them with the studio. A demo was given on the capabilities of the studio.

End users were trained on the system and the authoring tools

Thank you for your great effort. It’s very important to use the current training opportunities to market our academic offerings. Giving access to trainees will enable them to view our products and our VLE environment

- Prof. Moustafa HassanDean, e-School of Health & Environmental Studies

“”

I am looking forward to recording and inserting many video sessions into my courses this spring.

- Dr. Mohamed El BaradieAssistant Professor, e-School of Business and Quality Management

“ ”Faculty now takes interest in getting their lectures recorded in the studio

Sustainability

• Approval Process: In LCMS, the LOs go through approval process when contributed

• Quality Control: Approval process ensures quality and long stability of the LOs

• Continuous Improvement: LOs can easily be updated using the authoring tools

• Technology: LOs are built using HTML5 which is platform independent emerging technology
