KU076 University Fundamentals Seminar: Week 1 Welcome to our time together! If you get bumped from the seminar (e.g., you cant hear and/or cant type), X-out of the seminar and then sign back on. This usually takes care of problems. Call Tech Support for any tech issues during seminar: They can assist if you get bumped from the seminar room or experience other difficulties. Well get started at the bottom of the hour! Mike Bowe (a long time ago!); can you guess where I am? KU076 University Fundamentals Seminar, Week #1 Mike Bowe (Math Teacher): Thursday, 2/2 from 5:30 6:30 Ben Luce (Composition Teacher): Monday, 2/6 from 5:30 6:30 KU076 First Seminar Agenda MS Windows tips Course Home Page Navigation Initial Assessments Other Classes Results Course Topics Progress Reports MS Windows Tips for running and switching between several applications at a time For some folks unfamiliar with Windows: Restore Down/Maximize Button Switching between windows, using Alt-Tab Shortcut keys for Copying (Ctrl-C), and for Pasting (Ctrl-V) You can run several applications at a time; for example, you can be in the Seminar and also be running our Course Home Page under KUCampus simultaneously. For some folks unfamiliar with Windows: Restore Down/Maximize Button Switching between windows, using Alt-Tab With the Restore Down/Maximize Button (the one in the middle), you can resize each window so that you can see more than one at a time. For example: two applications displayed at the same time: You can also run each screen full-size, and quickly switch between them using the Alt-Tab buttons: While holding the ALT button with your left thumb, touch the Tab button with your left ring-finger. Other handy shortcuts: To Copy text: paint the text with the mouse, and use Ctrl-C to Copy (hold Ctrl and touch C) To Paste that text, click the mouse in the proper position and use Ctrl- V (hold Ctrl and touch V) To Find text on a page, use Ctrl-F (hold Ctrl and touch V) To Un-do anything (unless youve Saved it): Ctrl-Z (you can keep un-doing many steps back!) To Re-do something, or repeat something: Ctrl-Y To Save your work: Ctrl-S Course Home Page Always check for new Announcements To get into the My Foundations Lab (where all the testing and lessons take place): expand the Unit 1 tab Choose My Foundations Lab under Unit 1 (or another unit) We want to finish each of the three Path Builders, plus the Study Skills Learning Path, by next Tuesday (the end of Week 1)! After you finish all three of the Path Builders, you can re-take each another time if you are not happy with the initial results. These three horizontal rectangles are actually bar-graphs, and will show your progress over time as you complete Topics. Initial Assessments The initial assessments are very important; the rest of the course will be defined by them. If you are not confident about a topic on which you are being tested, you want to get it wrong! Otherwise, you wont be assigned to learn it. We are sorry that you have to do all this testing. And, it is not easy material: they want to probe and learn what you do not know; so it might feel discouraging. It is anything but! My gut feel is that about half the test takers get no Math topics completed at all from the tests! This course is great for those people that are allowing themselves that last opportunity to learn the fundamentals youll need in college, and in your career. A recent semesters results: Passing students, and those that, well, didnt. As you might see, it did NOT matter how well the students started out. Several who passed did not start well, but they persevered. Those folks are the ones that gained the most confidence in the material, also. Course Topics There are a total of 55 Topics to complete in this course. You might test-out of some of them upon finishing the initial assessments.
