Gday again folks and welcome to the latest on the streets of Bali. A semi decent week for the tipsters with many getting the full tote. Id say the powers that be at the club will have a special meeting to put the team on the straight and id say a few souls

will be given their marching shoes if things don't improve.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of residents of the Bali arts community of Ubud experienced a supernatural phenomenon when a giant fireball moved across the community on Monday night, March 31, 2014.

Known locally as a “leak” – flying fire balls are thought to be the i n c a r n a t i o n o f b l a c k m a g i c practitioners and reside in the psyche of all Balinese, many of who will retell of personal encounters with the leak phenomenon.

The leak that visited Bali on March 31 was estimated to be the size of a large chicken cage.

The fireball first appeared on Monday night at around 11:00 pm in a position atop the Bale Kulkul at Bale Banjar Taman Kelod, just east of the Puri Agung Palace in Ubud.

Cok Ace said whether or not the leak poses a personal threat, depends largely on the attitude of those who witness the event. He said it was important to neither be frightened by the fireball or to try to oppose it.

Willem Loots, a long-time Bali resident and semi-retired professional in Indonesian tourism, had the occasion to travel through Bali's still-under-construction Ngurah Rai International Airport on April 1, 2014.

On that same date, a more costly International Passenger Service Charge applied for all outgoing passengers went into effect. The Domestic Passenger Service Charge will follow suit in August.

Last Tuesday, April 1st I went through the experience of using the departure facilities at Ngurah Rai Denpasar Airport for the first time since the new international terminal was inaugurated last September.

I have been flying in an out of Bali countless times since I first came to the island in 1973. In a way, Ngurah Rai has always occupied a dear place in my heart, so I was totally unprepared for the awful situation that I found.

I had booked and checked-in online and printed my boarding pass at home. With hand luggage only, I thought that it would be sufficient to reach the airport an hour and a half before boarding time. A few days before my departure I had read that the airport tax would be raised from Rp. 150,000 to Rp. 200,000 as per August 1. Therefore it came as a surprise that August had arrived early when the young lady at the desk, now marked Airport Service Charge, informed me that the new rate was already in force.

The immigration procedure was swift and efficient and I am ready to admit that it is a measure of progress that I had to go through security screening only once. (Last year, I had to take off my shoes twice).

However the nightmare started immediately afterwards. After security it is impossible to just walk to the gates. In the old days shopping, tax free or not, was an OPTION. In the new setup of Angkasa Pura it is an absolute MUST to be confronted with loads of stuff you do not need. They make you stumble through a ridiculously long, serpentine labyrinth of department stores that are not only shocking in their opulence but probably extremely dangerous in emergency situations as well. Everything is placed much too close together and in case of an earthquake you better not find yourself

in the airport-shopping stampede…Once I had waded through the tax-free nightmare

and reached the hallway of the boarding gates I found that the first four electronic signboards I encountered were not functioning. There was no departure information whatsoever in the area where one exits from the tax free zone. I took off on a long walk to the East, asking anyone in uniform where I could find out from what gate my flight would leave, but no one could offer any advice or assistance. After hundreds of meters I finally did find ONE electronic information board lit up. While it did provide a list of flights departing during the rest of the day, THERE WAS NO GATE INFORMATION FOR ANY FLIGHT LEAVING DURING THE NEXT HOUR. My own Air Asia boarding pass indicated that I had to be at the gate at 12:15 and that I would be denied boarding if I would not show up before 12:35.

At my advanced age and with rising anger and blood pressure I kept pacing up and down the corridor that looks out on the runway, accosting anyone looking official on my path. When I finally found two uniformed Angkasa Pura officials lounging in between some of the gates they could not give any gate info either, so I asked where I could find the office of the people responsible for running the airport. I was told that I had to leave the terminal and go across the street to find them.

At exactly 12:13 a notice finally appeared on the single working information board that flight QZ8494 scheduled to depart at 12: 55 could be found at Gate 10. To reach Gate 10, from where the busses leave to the outskirts of the apron we had to go down an escalator to an area where there was neither air conditioning nor any room for passengers to sit down. Those who came last ended up sitting on the stairs.

For this scandalous lack of service everyone on QZ8494 had paid Rp. 200,000. These passengers should get their money back and the people at Angkasa Pura who are responsible for this outrage should be fired.

When I arrived in Singapore I was in a taxi within 20 minutes from the moment the plane touched down. It is always a pleasure to witness how the Changi Airport Authority implements a taxi management system that works seamlessly. It feeds passengers fairly and efficiently into taxis strictly on a first come-first serve basis. No one loses time unnecessarily. It is a perfect procedure for both drivers and their clients.

When, three days later, I returned to Bali it took more than an hour to clear immigration and customs. For a Friday rush hour, that was by itself not too bad since all officials were friendly and working hard. But afterwards, as a final insult, Angkasa Pura once again made me march through a TAX FREE shopping area before I could walk out into the mad chaos of the taxi touts.

The largest amount o f i n v e s t m e n t i n Indonesia's tourism sector is in the hotel and r e s t a u r a n t s e c t o r , according to the Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu.

Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, Pangestu said: “The largest amount of investment in tourism is dedicated to the development of hotels and restaurants.”

In 2013, tourism investment in Indonesia totaled US$ 602.648 million comprised of US$462.47 million in the form of foreign investments and the remaining US$140.18 million in domestic investments.

The Minister cited examples

of several ant ic ipated s o u r c e s o f n e w t o u r i s m i n v e s t m e n t v i a h o t e l developments at second and third-tier cities by the Santika, Tauzia and Dafam Hotel Groups.

M i n i s t e r P a n g e s t u s p e c i f i c a l l y c i t e d t h e aforementioned domestic hotel companies as pursuing an aggressive expansion program. “These operators plan to add 140 hotels before 2015,” she added.

The Minister also mention the Carlson Rezidor Group as a foreign operator joining forces with the PT Panorama Group with

next 5-7 years. Four of these hotels will begin construction this year in Lampung, Bali, Makassar and Bandung w i th a to ta l in i t ia l investment estimated at US$250 million.

T h e M i n i s t e r continued, “There are also foreign operators

working together with domestic investors to expand the i r business.”

At this time there are also 76 Aston Hotels, including the Aston Belitung, which just opened. Aston plans to open 150 more hotels in the coming 3-4 years.

Meanwhile, the Accor Group has been operating in Indonesia for 20 years and now runs 70 hotels in 24 cities, Accor is targeting to open 100 hotels with 20,000 room by 2015.

Start Up Exercise So you have made the leap from the stability of a salaried position to the dark abyss of entrepreneurship and survived. Firstly, congratulations on making it through that tough and often financially draining start-up phase.

The next test is to see if your business can not only survive, but build a sustainable cash flow to meet your own personal financial needs.

Whether it canand to what extent is based on three factors:

1.What do you need to cover your living expenses?

2.What can the business afford?

3.What is a reasonable level of remuneration for the work you do?

You own the business, and therefore you set the budget. The size of your pay packet is entirely up to you. Sounds easy in theory, and many entrepreneurs dream of this power when launching a business. However, in reality most business owners find it a very tough decision. The quest to balance your personal needs and those of building a strong business for the future can be daunting.

Firstly, a personal budget is essential to avoid nasty surprises. The next priority is to secure the business's future cash flow so you can meet expenses like your take-home pay in the future. The biggest danger to your business survival is bleeding too much cash out at an early stage to “match” your previous income when employed.

1. What do you need to cover your living expenses?

Your take-home pay should depend on your living expenses, personal savings and comfort level with drawing on those personal savings. Don't forget to include your spouse or partner in this discussion, as they may have a totally different view that you must consider.

This planner helps you avoid underestimating personal living, and is a good habit to form now that you are self-reliant.

2. What can your business's cash flow afford?

Once you've calculated the salary required to survive, consider your business's finances. Project how much cash you'll have coming in to the business every month with a cash flow projection. Make sure you will have enough cash to cover your expected salary along with the other business operating expenses. If the business is seasonal, you may have to adapt your drawdown strategy to suit the cash flow.

If your business is doing very well, don't fall in to the trap of leaving too much cash in the business. Remember — your business pays tax at the 30% rate, so you should consider taking funds out that would keep you below the 32.5% tax threshold at $37,000.

These funds can be invested at you or your spouse's lower marginal tax rates, and you can always lend the funds back to the company later if needed. It's a balance between keeping enough cash flow for the business to be healthy and fund future growth, but not wasting funds that could be invested more tax effectively in the meantime.

As your business grows, you can increase your salary as your bus iness breaks even and continues to profit.

3. What is a reasonable level of remuneration for the work you do?

One important requirement is to differentiate between what the

business should pay you as an employee and the business profit distribution for you as an investor. The business is replacing your previous job, so it needs to be able to eventually pay you for your experience and skills and the time and effort you put in.

This is totally different from the return on your investment for the risk you are taking on as a business owner.

Your goal should be to pay yourself for your work on the basis of a market comparable salary, but any other remuneration should be paid through a profit distribution. This makes it easier to plan for long-term business succession because it identifies true employee costs — a part of what it really costs to run the business.

Smal l -bus iness owners should discuss their payment options with their accountant to see if it is more tax effective to take a salary, a dividend or take funds by way of a drawdown of their shareholders' loan. This is where the personal financial situation of the owner needs to be considered to maximise the after-tax result of the arrangement.

It's a major milestone when a business becomes profitable enough that you can be paid for your efforts. Deciding how much to pay yourself, and whether to take the money as a salary, dividend or as a drawdown, requi res carefu l consideration. (Some people will never make it in their own business and always be a wage earner)

Egg on show for first time in 112 yearsA Fabergé Imperial Easter Egg made for Emperor Alexander III of Russia and not seen in public for more than a century will go on show in London after being saved from the melting pot by an American scrap dealer who only acc identa l ly realized its value.

The 8.2 cm (3.2 inches) tall egg, made from gold and studded wi th d iamonds and sapphires, was last displayed in St Petersburg in 1902.

I t w a s se ized by the Bolsheviks during the 1917 Russian Revolution and mysteriously made its way to the United States.

By chance, an unidentified man bought it at a market in the U.S. Midwest for $14,000, intending to sell it for scrap. Unable to find a buyer, he searched the Internet and realized that he may have found Empress Maria Feodorovna's lost Easter egg.

London antiques dealer Wartski, which specializes in the work of Fabergé, bought the egg for an unidentified private collector who has permitted it to go on show in its small showroom near London's luxury shopping strip Bond Street.

"For the art historical community and for the Fabergé world, I think we had to say that it

was found. It's like finding a missing Rembrandt and you didn't tell anybody," Kieran McCarthy, director of Wartski, told Reuters.

"It may disappear again and may not be seen for, who knows I would not be surprised if it didn't come out for another 112 years," he said.

Like all Fabergé's eggs, it contains a "surprise" a lady's watch by Vacheron Constantin with a white enamel face and diamond-set gold hands. The watch has been taken from its case and mounted in the Egg so it can be displayed upright.

The egg was made in the St Petersburg workshop of Fabergé's chief jeweler August Holmstrom between 1886 and 1887.

"In the hierarchy of Fabergé objects, the egg occupies the very, very highest level," said McCarthy. "They each took a year to make from the original conception to the

completion of it for delivery on Good Friday each Easter."

Egg is one of 50 delivered by Fabergé to Emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II from 1885 to 1916, and until its recent discovery was one of eight lost eggs. Only two others of these lost eggs are thought to have survived the revolution.

"It just shows that you never know," said McCarthy, when asked whether hope remains that the other two will be found. "We never thought this one would turn up and literally it was on somebody who walked through the front door."

The Lost Third Imperial Easter Egg can be seen from April 14 to 17 at Wartski's showroom in London.

Brad Symes is weighing up his football future after a sickening hit on Saturday

FORMER AFL star Brad Symes might be forced to quit football altogether after a sickening hit left him severely c o n c u s s e d o n Saturday.

S y m e s w a s smashed while playing for Central District in the South Australian Na t i ona l Foo tba l l League. Opposition player Adam Grocke collected Symes with what appeared to be a stray elbow as he attempted to take a mark.

It was the second sickening concussion Symes has suffered within a year, and it continues a history of head injuries which have left him weighing his future.

He missed last year's elimination final after a massive head clash with another player, Ben Kane.

Symes spent Saturday in hospital where he was cleared of facial fractures.

Cent ra l D is t r i c t ch ie f executive Kris Grant said Symes was nursing an “very, very sore jaw” and would discuss his future with club medical staff and family in the next week.

Grant was unsure how many concussions Symes had suffered but knew it was more than four.

The courageous 29-year-old became a father late last year and also recently opened a clothing shop.

He must decide whether it is worth potentially further risking his future health by returning to football.

“He has had a history of concussion and we are not quite sure what will happen but we are aware that this could be the end (of

his career),'' Grant said.“We have to sit down with

Brad — it would be wrong to do that today or tomorrow.

“We need to sit down with the club medical staff.

“Brad will need to come to the right decision in terms of his health. That has to be done.”

The l ong - te rm a f f ec t concussions and head injuries have on the brain of players has become an increasingly large issue in football over the past year.

Former AFL stars Greg Williams and Dean Kemp have both revealed they are suffering long-term brain injuries post-football and suffered from memory loss among other symptoms.

F o r m e r W e s t C o a s t a n d S o u t h Adelaide player Tim Houlihan prematurely retired from the SANFL last year because scans s h o w e d h e h a d sustained a brain injury playing football.

Last week gutsy former Brisbane Lions premiership player, now Power coaching director, Shaun Hart told The Advertiser he and his

wife were concerned about his future health after he suffered several bad blows to the head during his career.

Dogs coach Roy Laird spoke to Symes yesterday.

Laird said doctors advice would probably gu ide Symes in h is decision.

“He's had other head injuries over his career,'' Laird said.

“It's purely about his welfare. Knowing Brad, I'd

imagine if he was reassured (by doctors) about his health he would look at playing footy but if there were any long term health issues that get thrown up then it would be unlikely he'd play again. It's very up in the air.”

Grocke was reported for rough conduct over the incident and will front the tribunal this week.

Grant said the club was angered by the incident.

“It would be a disgusting way for somebody of Brad Symes' ilk to end his career if that is the case,'' Grant said.

Essendon veterans Dustin Fletcher and Paul Chapman remain in doubt for Round 4 game against Fremantle

Interim coach Bomber Thompson said the pair are battling soreness and would not be risked.

Chapman was hampered by an ankle injury in the second half against Carlton and at 38 years of age Fletcher is not expected to play every game this season.

“I think he (Chapman) hurt it twice during the game, early and at the end as well.

“You've just got to wait and see how he pulls up,” Thompson said on Tuesday.

“I think Dustin's pulled up a bit sore too, so he may not play at this stage, but it's only very early in the week so we'll have to wait and see.

“We don't know about Fletch, he's a bit like Chappy — the

older they get they've got the appetite to play, they never want to miss,” he said.

Thompson said ruckman Patrick Ryder was a “good chance” to recover from an ankle injury in time to do battle with F r e m a n t l e g i a n t A a r o n Sandilands.

But l ike Fletcher and Chapman, Ryder would not be rushed.

“It's Round 4, it's silly to take any risk. From our point of view we probably won't play guys who are sore, because they just can't play to their potential and then that just sort of lingers around for a few more weeks and affects that performance too in those games,” Thompson said.

The trip West might be an issue for Fletcher and Chapman, but Thompson welcomed the challenge of playing last year's grand finalists at their home ground.

Fremantle was the No. 1 defensive team in 2013, while

Essendon has proved to be one of the best attacking outfits this season, with its precision kicking skills a feature.

“Good teams are good teams, no matter where they play,” he said.

He refused to be drawn on his future at the club beyond this season or the comments made by Geelong premiership captain Tom Harley — who stated Essendon was a better coached team under Thompson.

“The more talk about James and me, the more I don't like it, it's irrelevant really,” he said.

R u n n i n g d e f e n d e r Courtenay Dempsey remains on a club imposed suspension for being late to club engagements, but Thompson said the 26-year-old had “done everything right” since.

Spring-heeled forward Kyle Hardingham was subbed out of Sunday night's game in the third quarter and needs to get through training this week to take his place in the side.

THE Bulldogs have been fined $20,000 for failing to comply with the NRL's strict new concussion guidelines.

NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said on Tuesday morning that the NRL had issued one breach notice, to the Bulldogs, for an incident involving forward Josh Jackson in Round 2.

He said the club would be fined $20,000 for the breach.

As it was a first breach, $10,000 will be suspended but the club will be liable to pay this if there are any further breaches during the

2014 season.Greenberg said that

during the first five rounds:27 players were taken

from the field to undergo Sideline Concuss ion Assessments (SCAs);

14 of those players returned to the field after being cleared of concussion;

13 did not return to the field;Five clubs have been given

“please explain” notices in relation to their compliance with the new concussion rules believed to include cases involving Wests Tigers forward Liam Fulton, the Bulldogs' James Graham, as well as Parramatta and Penrith players.

He said he would further consult with the club CEOs, chief medical officers, coaches and players as well as the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA)

in the coming months to hear their views on the way the policy is working.

“There is no doubt the new policy has raised awareness of the need to take concussion seriously,” Greenberg said.

“We know that the club doctors and medical staff are best placed to determine whether a player should return to the field after a head knock.

“We be l i eve they a re overwhelmingly acting in the best interests of their players but we will continue to take action where a breach occurs.”

Greenberg said, that overall, clubs had complied with the policy which is aimed at protecting players who suffer head knocks during games.

The Storm were infuriated that the Gold Coast's Beau Falloon was cleared over a lifting tackle on Melbourne's Will Chambers on Sunday.

St George Illawarra's Joel T h o m p s o n a l s o e s c a p e d punishment after sending Greg Inglis crashing into the turf on Saturday night, while the Dragons' Jack de Belin only copped a grade

one charge for his dangerous throw on Sam Burgess.

Thompson was involved in a three-man tackle on Inglis that brought a stunning reaction on the night from Fox Sports commentator Warren Smith, who said in commentary: “Boy oh boy, the penny will drop at some stage with everybody. Nothing good is going to come from a situation like that.”

But it doesn't appear as though the penny has dropped at Rugby League Central because the consistency of the match review committee charges continues to mystify fans and experts.

As NRL fans vented their anger on social media, the NRL's match review committee chairman Michael Buettner attempted to clarify why Falloon and Thompson weren't charged.“Under the rules, for a player to be charged with a dangerous throw we have to be satisfied that a player has

been lifted into a position where it is likely that the first part of his body that will make contact with the ground will be his head or neck,” Buettner said.“With the Joel Thompson tackle, we did not believe a charge was appropriate as, while there is a lifting action, Inglis retains one leg on the ground for much of the tackle and he clearly lands on his forearms. He doesn't reach a dangerous position.“With the Beau Falloon tackle, again there was a lifting action but we do not feel he is put in a position where it is likely his head or neck will make first contact with the ground.''It is his forearm that makes first contact with the ground, then the shoulder, and in our opinion a penalty was sufficient.”Melbourne forward Dayne Weston will miss a week with an early guilty plea on the charge of dangerous contact — unnecessary head/neck pressure.

A Seattle man who became concerned after receiving two surprise packages of marijuana in the mail within a month took the shipment of about half an ounce of plastic-wrapped pot to police, authorities said.

When the first package arrived last month, the man threw it in the garbage, Seattle police spokeswoman Detective Renee Witt said. But, after another package reached his front door, he took it to authorities.

Washington and Colorado became the first U.S. states to legalize recreational pot in voter initiatives in 2012, and Washington law allows people to possess up to an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana.

But shipping the drug through the U.S. Postal Service remains illegal. The federal government classifies marijuana as an illegal narcotic, although the Obama administration has issued guidelines giving states new leeway to experiment with legalized cannabis.

Authorities said the pot mailed to the Seattle man's home came marked "return to sender, insufficient postage," and had been addressed to a business in Georgia. It listed the man's home as the return address.

"Federally it (pot possession) is still considered a crime, so you absolutely cannot under any circumstance send marijuana through the mail," Witt said.

She said a similar incident happened about a

year ago, when another man brought in pot that had been sent to his address, listed as the sender, citing insufficient postage. In both cases, police documented the pot before destroying it.

Witt said the two cases do not appear to indicate a broader problem of people mailing pot from Washington state to states where possession of the drug remains against the law.

"We don't see this very often," she said. "For us it's not something we're worried about."

Buddhists form "anti-terrorist" squadNervous about a repeat of last month's deadly knife attack at a Chinese train station, a well-known Buddhist temple in eastern China has drafted some of its monks into a new "anti-terrorist" squad.

The team at the 1,700-year-old Lingyin Temple in the tourist city of Hangzhou is made up of 20 monks and more than 20 security guards, the official Xinhua news agency quoted the temple's Buddhist Master Jueheng as saying.

The squad's members are equipped with shields, pepper spray and batons. It is the first time a Chinese temple has set up such a team, Xinhua said.

"The squad members practice Buddhism in the day and

take pa r t i n t ra in ing exercises at night," Jueheng said, adding police helped with the training.

"We set up the squad to guard against violence and terrorist attacks in a bid to protect the safety of visi tors and Buddhism believers."

The China News Service said the idea sprang from last month's attack at the Kunming train station in southwestern

the far western region of Xinjiang. Thirty-three people died, including four of the attackers, shot dead by police.

That incident "attracted the at tent ion of temple authorities", the report said.

China remains jittery after that incident and after a vehicle ploughed into tourists on the edge of Tiananmen

Square last October, killing the three people in the car and two bystanders. China labeled that incident a suicide attack by Xinjiang militants.

Mazda told U.S. regulators that it is recalling 42,000 sedans with 2.5-liter engines from model years 2010 to 2012 in the United States. M a z d a o f f i c i a l s w e r e n o t immediately available to report recalls outside of the United States.

Three years ago, Mazda recalled about 65,000 Mazda6 sedans in North America from model

years 2009 and 2010, also because of spider webs blocking evaporative canister vent lines. The same issue is the cause of the most recent recall, Mazda told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The web weaved by a spider can lead to a restriction of fuel flow, which in turn can reduce fuel tank pressure when the emission control system purges vapors from the evaporative canister. This can put stress on the fuel tank, which may crack and leak fuel, increasing the risk of a fire, a report filed with NHTSA says.

Mazda said it is not aware of any fires because of this risk.

In 2011, Reuters reported that the Yellow Sac spider was the culprit in that year's recall. It just likes the smell of gasoline, an auto analyst told Reuters at the time.

Mazda attempted to remedy the problem by adding a spring to the canister vent line to keep spiders

For the most part, that solution worked, but after several reports of cracked fuel tanks in sedans equipped with the spring, Mazda engineers tried to figure out the spider's route to the canister.

After learning of nine cases in which tanks were damaged even though a spring was loaded, engineers determined that a change in the car's software would keep tanks from cracking even if a spider web blocks a vent.

Mazda will inform owners in the recall campaign to bring cars to dealers, where the evaporative canister vent line will be checked and cleared if necessary. Also, the dealerships will reprogram software.

The blockage is not present on other models made by Mazda and occurs only in cars made a plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, at which Mazda once produced cars jointly with Ford Motor Co. Mazda stopped production of cars at Flat Rock in August 2012.

A teacher who punishes students by making them a n s w e r t h e i r m o b i l e s o n speaker has been subjected to an embarrassing April Fools Day prank.

Students filmed the stunt, which was c a r r i e d i n a U S classroom last week.

The YouTube v ideo shows a girl in class answer her mobile phone to find the caller was from the Pregnancy Resource Centre.

In front of the professor and the entire class, the caller says: "I've called to tell you the test results have come back positive".

The shocked teacher, who had earlier been smugly watching the girl squirm, quickly tells her to "shut down" the call.

The US professor can be seen on the video trying to apologise to the girl while c o v e r i n g h i s f a c e i n embarrassment.

R.E.M. was an American rock b a n d f r o m Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist P e t e r B u c k , bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. 'Human skin' found to be sheepskinA 17th century book owned by Harvard Law School, thought to have been bound in human skin because of an inscription that referred to a man "flayed alive," has been shown through scientific testing to have been bound in sheepskin.

The binding material of t he Span i sh l aw book published in 1605-1606 was determined after an analysis of nine samples of its front and back covers, binding and glue, Karen Beck, a rare books curator at Harvard Law School Library, said last week.

The Harvard conservation scientist who conducted the testing used a technique for identifying proteins called peptide mass fingerprinting to differentiate the samples from other parchment sources such as cattle, deer, goat and human skin, Beck wrote in a post on the Harvard Law School Library blog. The glue was found to consist of cattle and pig collagen.

Curators, dermatologists and others had studied the book for years because of a suggestive inscription on its last page that reads:

"The binding of this book is all that remains of my dear friend Jonas Wright, who was flayed alive by the Wavuma on the Fourth Day of

August, 1632. King Mbesa did give me the book, it being one of poor Jonas chief possessions, together with ample of his skin to bind it. Requiescat in pace."

The book arrived at Harvard Law School in 1946, Beck said. It may have had a different binding at some point in its history, according to Beck, possibly explaining the mention of 1632 on a book published 1605-06.

Beck questioned why anyone would have written such an inscription if Jonas Wright was actually the name of a sheep and said the inscription instead may have been the product of someone's macabre imagination.

The book and its sheepskin binding are being digitized and will be available through the university's online library system later this year.

The practice of binding books i n h u m a n s k i n , c a l l e d anthropodermic bibliopegy, was

o n c e s o m e w h a t common and has been done since at least the 16th century, according to a Harvard library blog post. Criminals' confessions were occasionally bound in the skin of the convicted or individuals may have asked to be memorialized for family or lovers in the form of a book bound in their skin, it said.

Harvard has two other books thought to be bound in human skin, including a meditation on the soul published by French writer ArsèneHoussaye in the 19th century, and an edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses published in the 16th century, said Heather Cole, an assistant curator at the university's Houghton Library.

"There's large pores on the front of it," she said of the Houssaye volume, adding that books are typically bound in calf or sheep leather. "It looks different than the normal kinds of leathers we use to bind books."

Cole said the book contained a note from a doctor who was a friend of the author that said a book about the human soul deserves a human covering. The skin was from a female mental patient who had died of a stroke, she said, though it was unclear whether she was his patient.

As a foreigner, there is a number of ways that can lead to you owning your dream property in Bali.

The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model.Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable

foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)This is the right of use over state-

owned (crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement.

Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity. Or foreigner permanently domiciled in Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner.

Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee.

The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Woman frozen alive in morgueA California appeals court has revived a m a l p r a c t i c e s u i t brought by the family of a n 8 0 - y e a r - o l d g r a n d m o t h e r t h e y claim was prematurely d e c l a r e d d e a d b y doctors then frozen alive inside a body bag i n t h e h o s p i t a l ' s morgue.

A lower-court judge had dismissed the lawsuit brought in May 2012 by relatives of Maria de Jesus Arroyo against White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles over the woman's 2010 death, on grounds that the statute of limitations had lapsed.

But a three-judge panel of a state appeals court sided with the family on Wednesday in agreeing they could not have known how Arroyo was alleged to have died until it was brought to light by a pathologist in an expert opinion he gave in December 2011.

"Plaintiffs had absolutely no reason to suspect that the decedent was alive rather than dead when placed in the hospital morgue," the court said in its 27-page opinion. The lawsuit now goes back to Los Angeles Superior Court.

The origins of the case date to July 26, 2011, when doctors at the hospital pronounced Arroyo dead from cardiac arrest shortly

after she was brought there by ambulance.

Employees of a funeral home chosen by the family to pick up the woman's remains from the hospital morgue later discovered her lying face down in a body bag half-unzipped, with bruises and gashes to her face and a broken nose, according to the court record.

Informed by the mortuary of the body's condition, family members who had seen Arroyo's face without injuries just after she was pronounced dead assumed her corpse had been mishandled by hospital morgue workers.

The family went on to file a negligence suit in January 2011 claiming the hospital was to blame for mutilating their loved one's body.

But Dr. William Manion, a New Jersey pathologist, retained by the family as an expert witness reviewed medical records and sworn statements of hospital personnel and reached a far more horrific conclusion.

He said Arroyo had been prematurely declared dead and was placed alive in the freezer of the hospital m o r g u e w h e r e s h e e v e n t u a l l y r e g a i n e d consciousness due to the e x t r e m e c o l d a n d "damaged her face and turned herself face down as s h e s t r u g g l e d unsuccessfully to escape

her frozen tomb."As a result, the family

dropped its original lawsuit and filed a new claim accusing the hospital of malpractice and wrongful death.

"It really has to be your worst nightmare to wake up like that, the worst way to die," the family's lawyer, Scott Schutzman, said on Thursday. "Can you imagine trying to get out of a zippered bag?"

The hospital declined in a brief statement to comment on the case, except to say that "we continue to disagree with the allegations being made."

"We followed all proper protocols in the matter, and are confident that once the facts of the case are reviewed we will prevail in court," the statement said.

Schutzman said the family has "no choice" but to go to trial, as " there has never been a settlement offer in this case." He said he expects the case to reach trial within a year.
