A repository is a type of digital library that contains:
What is learning content?
• Learning Object– Includes learning goals, concepts, practices,
and assessments.– Full courses or units, complete textbooks
• Learning Asset – Lacks one or more pieces of a learning object.– Can be combined with other material or
edited to create a learning object. – Tutorials, simulations, audios, videos,
animations, games, slideshows, surveys, URLs, images, graphs, lesson plans

Any digital content designed to teach a concept or skill
Examples of Learning Content• Ratios and Proportions: defines ratios and proportions and demonstrates
the simplification of rations and solving problems using proportions.
• Geometry Gallery-Basic Geometry: collection of applets that demonstrate basic geometric concepts
• Order of Operations - Problem 1: shows how to solve problems with different operations.
• The Chemistry Collective: collection of virtual labs, scenario-based learning activities, and concepts tests
• Confusing Words: Effect - Affect : provides definitions, examples, and activities to practice using the two words correctly.

Data / Content
Metadata
A repository is a single point of entry where users can:
• View, download and use learning content• Retrieve, customize and repurpose learning
content• Share and contribute original learning
content

Why not Google?
• Too many results to choose from• Too many irrelevant results• Too time consuming• Not peer-reviewed• Don’t know rights for the use of content
11/19/2008 11
• Integrate content into BlackBoard, ANGEL or Moodle
• Collaborate and exchange knowledge• Efficiently develop unique content

A repository is a learning community where educators can:
13
Why have a repository?
11/19/2008 14
Reduce Cost
• More cost-effective development efforts– Create resources once, and re-use many times– Re-purpose existing resources– Avoid duplication of efforts
• Achieve cost savings via group-buy of quality content
Improve Quality
• Peer review process for contributed content– Depot content standards established
• Vetting process for content providers– Depot Content Team as Gatekeepers
• National Repository of Online Courses (NROC)– Depot Pilot base collection
Build Learning Community
Where educators can:• Share their original content with colleagues• Rate and comment on others’ contributed content• Use Depot as a Gateway to other standards-
compliant repositories in other states and throughout the world to build a larger learning community
