January 5th, 2020, Epiphany of the Lord“We saw his star and… have come to do him homage.” Matthew 2:2

It describes the holy city of Jerusalem as radiating the light of God’s presence to all peoples of the earth. Israel became a light to all nations. Seeing “the glory of the Lord,” other nations recognize the one true God and bring gifts “proclaiming the praises of the Lord.” / Isaiah 60:1-6Saint Paul recalls how the plan of salvation was suddenly revealed to him when he came to know Jesus Christ. He reminded the Ephesians that all people are called to be one in Christ Jesus and that the gospel must be preached to them. Because Jesus was a Jew, some of his followers thought that Jesus’ message was only for Jews. The early Church gradually came to realize that the message of Jesus was for everyone in the world. / Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6The Gospel tells us the story of the astrologers, or the three wise men. They followed a star to find “the newborn king of the Jews.” Today’s feast is called Epiphany, means “manifestation” or “shining forth” like a light. We celebrate the day when Jesus, our Light, was first revealed to the nations beyond Israel. Just as light shines forth so that we may see in the darkness, our faith in Jesus shines forth in us. / Matthew 2:1-12

Esta lectura describe la ciudad santa de Jerusalén que irradiaba la luz de la presencia de Dios a todos los pueblos de la tierra. Israel se hizo la luz de todas las naciones. Viéndola como “la gloria del Señor”, las otras naciones reconocían al verdadero Dios y le traían obsequios “proclamando alabanzas al Señor”. / Isaías 60:1-6San Pablo recuerda cómo el plan de la salvación de Dios le fue revelado cuando conoció a Jesucristo. Pablo recuerda a los efesios que todas las personas son llama-das a ser uno en Jesucristo y a difundir su verdad. Porque Jesús era judío, algunos de sus seguidores pensaban que el mensaje de Jesús era solamente para los judíos. Pero la Iglesia, desde sus inicios, comenzó a transmitir gradualmente el mensaje de Jesús al mundo entero. / Efesios 3:2-3a,5-6En el Evangelio de hoy, escuchamos la historia de los reyes magos o astrólogos que siguieron una estrella para descubrir al “recién nacido rey de los Judíos”. Ahora, esa festividad es llamada Epifanía, palabra que significa “aparición” o “brillo”. Celebramos el día en que Jesús, nuestra luz, fue revelado por primera vez a las naciones más allá de Israel. Como la luz, se proyecta para que podamos ver en la oscuridad; nuestra fe en Jesús brilla más allá de nosotros. / Mateo 2: 1-12

The Meaning of Epiphany Epiphany means manifestation or revelation. When the Shepherds came to Bethlehem Christ revealed himself to the people of Israel. And when the three wise men came they reveled to the whole world.The three wise men brought to baby Jesus three gifts: GOLD – It was only offered to a King. Jesus is the King of the Universe INCENSE–It was only offered to God. Jesus was fully human and divine.MYRRH – It was an offering for the dead. Jesus died on the cross.These gifts continue giving meaning to us: Gold symbolizes our MATERIAL WEALTHIncense symbolizes our PRAYER LIFE and WORSHIP Myrrh symbolizes DEATH to OUR SINS As we begin 2020 let us reflect on: How can I share my assets with those in need? How much time should I spend in prayer? What sins and ad-dictions do I want to die from?
