After completion of nine months the fetus is fully grown in the womb and is it due to come out after spending a specified period there. Allah says:

نشاء ما األرحام في ونقرمسمى أجل And we cause whom we will to remain in the wombs for anإلى

appointed term

(Surah Al-Hajj 22:5)

The appointed term is specified and the specified period is known. Allah says:

في (21) فجعلناهكين م قرار

قدر (22) إلىعلوم القادرون (23) م فنعم فقدرنا

“Then we placed it in a place of safety (womb) for a known period (determined by gestation)? So we did measure; and We are the best to measure (the things).”

(Surah Al-Mursalat)

The Quran says, describing the state of Maryam pbuh:

مت (23) ليتني يا قالت النخلة جذع إلى المخاض فأجاءهانسيا م نسيا وكنت هذا سريا (24)قبل تحتك ربك جعل قد تحزني أال تحتها من فناداها

جنيا (25) رطبا عليك تساقط النخلة بجذع إليك ي وهزي (26) وقر واشربي فكلي

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: Sheعيناcried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!” 23But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee; 24"And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee. 25

"So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man, say, 'I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into not talk with any human being'” 26

(Surah Maryam)

Different Stages of human prenatal development

PHASES OF LABOR.

1.Expansion and contraction of the cervix:This phase lasts for about 7 to 12 hours. The cervix expands and stretches to allow the passage of the fetus.

The labor stage which ends with birth has four phases.

2.Coming out of the baby:This stage lasts for 30 to 50 minutes. It starts after sufficient expansion of the cervix as a result of successive contractions.The head of the fetus comes out first. The diameter of the fetus head could exceed 12cm and this triple the diameter of the cervix in normal state. When we observe this we would realize Allah’s wisdom in His saying,

3.Coming out of the placenta and forming of coagulated blood after that:This phase lasts for about 15 minutes.4.Shrinking of the uterus:This shrinking reduces post delivery hemorrhage . This phase lasts for up to 2 hours.

After the delivery and the severance of the umbilical cord, the new born then starts another phase of its life.

Quranic verses give a description of major phases that a human fetus passes through right from its conception to its birth.At the time the Quran was being revealed it informed mankind about the stages of human formation using the exact terms that agree with modern scientific rules and affirming that formation and development of the fetus occur in phases and stages.The Quran says:

أطوارا (14) خلقكم وقارا (13) وقد لله ترجون ال لكم ا م“Whats the matter with you, [you fear not Allah (his punishment) and] you hope not for reward (from Allah or you believe not in His oneness) While he has created you in different stages.(Surah Nuh)

وفي اآلفاق في آياتنا سنريهمأنه لهم يتبين حتى الحق ) 53(أنفسهم

شيء كل على أنه بربك يكف أولمشهيد

Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things? (53) (Surah Al-Fussilat)
