Welcome to Lake Tenkiller

Lake Tenkiller is Oklahoma’s clear water lake. The nearly 13,000 acres of clear waters, and 130 miles of scenic shoreline with rocky banks and rock bluffs above and below the water provide the environment for the greatest variety of water sports activities and recreational entertainment. The beautiful, clear waters of Lake Tenkiller are perfect for all types of boating activities. Colorful sails grace the horizon on any given day as sailing enthusiasts discover the deep water and whispering breezes. Secluded coves provide shelter from powerboat wakes and prevailing winds and are popular anchoring spots. The lake has 10 marinas and 20 parks managed by the State of Oklahoma or the Corps of Engineers with all levels of campsite facilities available. There are 24 boat launching ramps around the lake, and rental boats of all kinds are available at most marinas. Visitors can find excellent lodging and dining at the many resorts, motels and restaurants around the lake. For dining pleasure, there are floating restaurants, as well as a variety of excellent land-based restaurants — all happy to serve the casually dressed. There are paved roadways surrounding the lake and into each of the recreational access points, as well as a county airport. Lake Tenkiller weaves 34 miles through the wild and rolling hills of Cherokee County. The lake was created in the Illinois River basin by the Tulsa District Army Corps of Engineers. Tenkiller is a proud example of how man and nature can combine their talents and beauty to produce a thing of lasting quality for this generation and generations to come.

Tenkiller-area is camper’s paradise With two state parks and a host of campgrounds that are privately owned or managed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers, there is room for everyone with a range of facilities from RV hookups to the most primitive settings. The parks have boat ramps, bathrooms equipped with showers, picnic shelters and tables, drinking fountains, swimming areas, playgrounds and grills. Group camping areas are plentiful, and packages may be arranged by calling any of the state

parks or privately-owned businesses. Special programs also are available through Tenkiller State Park’s Nature Center. All lake swimming areas are protected from boats with buoy safety markers, and most camping grounds are patrolled 24 hours a day by the State Park Rangers, Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission Rangers and the Corps of Engineers. There are several free public access areas along the Upper Illinois River. Campsites for the

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks and recreation areas can be reserved by calling 1-877-444-6777. Individual campsites may be reserved 240 days in advance, while group facilities may be reserved 360 days in advance. Reservations are not required but are recommended for holidays and peak season. For information on all privately-owned campsites, call the Greater Tenkiller Area Association at 1-888-867-4403.

Fishing and wildlife resources at Lake Tenkiller provide a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. Year-round fishing is good with black bass, white bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish, bream and walleye, with rainbow and brown trout stocked in the Illinois River below the dam. The trout fishery on the river attracts many visitors, as does the Illinois River north of the lake, which attracts canoeists and rafters. There are two heated fishing docks for wintertime fishing. Heated docks are at Burnt Cabin Marina and Caney Ridge Marina. Lake Tenkiller is a popular lake for fishing tournaments. Striped bass are also common in the Lower Illinois River with several state record fish coming from its waters. The current striped bass state record was caught in July 1996 by Louis Parker of Gore.

Crappie Crappie fishing is usually best in the spring as the fish prepare for spawning. Look for small, pea gravel type banks and shallow willow trees. During the hot summer months, crappie can be found in deep water — about 25 to 40 feet deep. In the Fall, crappie move back to the

shallow waters and can be found around submerged brush. Crappie can be caught from one of the heated fishing docks around the lake in the wintertime.

White & Striped Bass White bass, or sand bass (sandies), provide excellent fishing opportunities in the spring as they head for the upper Illinois River to spawn. From Carter’s Landing to Horseshoe Bend is an excellent area to catch the spring run. During the summer months, the sandies begin to school. Areas near Cookson, Chicken Creek and Snake Creek are good choices. Striped bass are caught below Tenkiller Dam in the Lower Illinois River and Arkansas River near Gore and Marval Resort. Striper fishing is tremendous year around with the lower Illinois River producing the state record 47-pound 8-ounce striper.

Large & Smallmouth Bass During the summer months, largemouth bass move to deeper water. Night fishing is popular due to the heavy day use on the lake. Smallmouth bass provide

some scrappy fighting in the summer. Most successful areas to catch smallmouth bass are in the Upper Illinois River and Baron Fork Creek. Largemouth bass return to the shallows as water temperatures start to cool down in the Fall. In the wintertime, largemouth bass seek deep water.

Catfish Catfishing really picks up in the summer months. Fishing the deep water near mud flats around Pettit Bay, Standing Rock and Carter’s Landing are excellent choices. In the Fall, catfishing is good in 10 to 20 feet of water.

Trout Rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the Illinois River below the dam. Trout are stocked in the river normally every Thursday afternoon in the spring beginning in March. In the summer months, they are stocked three or four times per month. In the wintertime, they are normally stocked every other week. The Oklahoma Wildlife Department has the exact schedule.

Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is located two miles south of Vian, and is the winter home for nearly 1 million migratory geese and the bald eagle. Tenkiller State Park Nature Center is open seven days a week during summer. A short nature trail follows a rock bluff by the lake. Guided tours are available. Standing Rock Nature Trail (about 1-1/4 miles) is made up of two loops, each with two segments of shorter trails —Big Pine and Three Sisters on the first loop, and Big Cedar and Hi-Knob on the second. The Buzzard Roost Trail at

Cato Creek Landing (1-1/2 miles) winds along a circular path beside a creek. The Overlook Nature Trail is located at the Tenkiller Dam Overlook. The first segment of the trail (1-1/4 miles) winds through the woods from the Overlook to Highway 10A (near the Methodist Boys Ranch). The second segment of the trail continues on from Highway 10A and ends at Strayhorn Public Use Area.

Welcome to Tahlequah

Welcome to Tahlequah Tahlequah is a vibrant community in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. It was surveyed in 1843 and incorporated under Cherokee law in 1852, making it one of the oldest municipalities in Oklahoma. Tahlequah is rich in Cherokee history and culture and is the capital of the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. Centered in the midst of the Illinois River, Tenkiller Lake and Lake Fort Gibson, Tahlequah provides outdoor recreational opportunities from boating and fishing to swimming to hiking amid beautiful scenery. Tahlequah is home to Northeastern State University, a comprehensive regional university that is home to the Oklahoma College of Optometry. Tahlequah’s four distinct seasons provide beauty

year-round. The redbud and dogwood trees bloom in the spring with delicate and beautiful colors. Summer’s blue skies and warm days entice folks to outdoor and water activities. Fall has a charm all its own. Scenic highways offer spectacular fall foliage vistas, or you can enjoy the rustling of fall leaves in one of our city parks. The nationally-designated Cherokee Hills Byway goes through the heart of downtown Tahlequah. Snowflake Winter Festival features an outdoor ice skating rink open Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Day. We hope you experience Tahlequah’s unique blend of recreational, cultural, historic and educational opportunities and see why our visitors become our friends.

Tahlequah’s downtown has seen much revitalization, especially in the North End Entertainment District. The North End boasts boutiques, restaurants, ice cream and speciality coffee, as well as a large park that hosts festivals and a weekly Farmer’s Market.

The novel “Where the Red Fern Grows” is the basis for Tahlequah’s Red Fern Festival, and scheduled to be held April 24-25, 2015. The legend of the red fern tells of two Native American children who become lost in a blizzard, and die before they can find their way home. In the spring their bodies are found, a red fern growing between them. The legend says that only an angel can plant the seed from which the red fern grows, and that the plant will never die. Now, to many, the legend of the red fern evokes heartfelt memories. People are curious about the area that inspired the story, and in the hound dogs and raccoons. Visitors want to connect the mystical place in their minds the story took them to the physical place the story is set. All of this gave rise to the Red Fern Festival. The Red Fern Festival includes hound dog field trials, a barbeque and chili cook-off, live music, the ever-popular crawdad hole, old-fashioned children’s games, a car show, a fern sale, handcrafted arts and crafts, more hounds, raccoons, and a lovely festival that is evocative a simpler time. “Where the Red Fern Grows” was written by Tahlequah-area native Wilson Rawls. Visit RedFernFestival.com for dates, schedule of events and other information.

Tenkiller Lake boasts nearly 13,000 acres of space for all types of boating activities that cover sailing, scuba diving, water skiing, wakeboarding, innertubing, fishing, cruising, lounging and jet skiing.

There are full-service marinas on the lake that provide fuel, snacks, swimwear, water toys and other necessities. Four of the marinas (Pine Cove, Barnacle Bills, Burnt Cabin and Sixshooter) also include

floating restaurants that allow casual dress straight from the lake. There are businesses that assist boaters who experience an accident or breakdown. Refer to the business directory on pages 57-61 of this guide. The rocky bluffs and serene, lush forests provide beautiful scenery from any location on the lake. There are many secluded coves in which to anchor. The sunsets have been ranked as one of the most engaging sights in the state. The clear night skies afford an awesome array of stars for gazing, perfect for night-time romance, sailing or hunting for falling meteors. Several marinas rent pontoons, ski boats and wave runners for your convenience.

The J. T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve The Nickel Preserve is the largest privately protected conservation area in the Ozarks. This 17,000-acre landscape rests in eastern Oklahoma’s rolling Cookson Hills and overlooks the Illinois River. Spring-fed creeks meander amid a rugged topography of steep slopes and narrow valleys harboring a mosaic of oak-hickory forest, lofty pine woodland, and a diverse mix of savanna, shrubland, and prairie. The preserve provides optimal habitat for a suite of uncommon breeding bird species, including some whose survival requires large blocks of intact habitat.

Snowflake Winter FestivalSnowflake Winter Festival is anchored at Norris Park in downtown Tahlequah and transforms the park, the North End District and much of downtown into a winter wonderland. Snowflake Winter Festival features an ice skating rink open from Thanksgiving day through New Year’s Day and holiday decorations bedecking Main Street.

Cherokee Heritage CenterThe Cherokee Heritage Center is constructed of native stone and concrete, and incorporates the three remaining pillars of the Cherokee National Female Seminary, whas was the first institution of higher learning for women west of the Mississippi. The Thompson HouseThe Thompson House is one of nearly 20 properties in and around Tahlequah listed on the National

Register of Historic Places. The house was built in 1882 by Johnson Thompson, and the two-story house’s architectural style is Queen Anne Carpenter Gothic with Eastlake style interior woodwork.

Foliage Excursions The roads in and around Tahlequah are ablaze with color in the spring and autumn. The Cherokee Hills National Byway, which runs through downtown Tahlequah, is an excellent starting point for whichever direction you decide to take. Outfitters on the Illinois River

Photo by Barb DownardThe Illinois River is a designated scenic river and attracts river enthusiasts from across the nation. Hundreds of thousands of people visit Tahlequah to float the river in canoes, kayaks and rafts and are treated to views such as the Old River Bridge (shown above), Elephant Rock and Goats Bluff.

Lake Tenkiller Visitors Guide 2015.indd 41 11/20/14 12:53 PM

Ever since legislation designated the Illinois River as a scenic river, it has offered visitors an opportunity for fun, adventure and beauty. The clear waters meander through the Ozark hills and provide visitors with views of oak and elm trees and the occasional hickory and cedar. The majority of the river is easy going, allowing its floaters to relax and enjoy the high bluffs, rocky islands and a medley of wildlife. There are many outfitters along the river that provide canoes, kayaks or rafts. Many of them offer group discounts and lodging facilities. You also can bring your own kayak, canoe or raft and put in at any of the public access points. It is required that you have a User Fee Decal on your boat, which may be purchased at the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission. Canoeing, kayaking or floating the Illinois River is not dangerous, but be sure to observe all of the safety precautions, wear your lifejackets and make yourself aware of the current flow and level of the river. Fishermen enjoy largemouth and small-mouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, walleye and various

sunfishes. There are more than 70 species, with a few seasonal varieties. There are a few classes available for fly-fishing, lure tying and guided fishing trips.

Cookson, Keys are gateway to Lake TenkillerCookson The town took its name from Jack Cookson, who operated the local post office from his home before statehood. Cookson was located on the shore of the Illinois River, near the Cookson Bluff area. One of the first buildings in the area was the Ballew Brothers’ Store. They supplied locals with everything from food to guns and tools. Some years later, the Stratton family took over the operation, which by then was also the post office. The first floor of the building housed the store and post office. The store was a popular gathering place, and served as a place to vote during elections. In 1947, the Corps of Engineers began construction on the Tenkiller Dam. Several of the structures from the town were moved to higher ground. Among these were the old store and several small cabins, which were relocated to their present location on Highway 82 in Cookson. The store is still a popular gathering place. Several structures from the old town could not be moved and were left behind at the bottom of the lake. They now are a popular underwater destinations for scuba divers.

Keys The Keys community is located south of Tahlequah at the junction of Oklahoma State Highway 82, which traverses the east side of the lake, and Indian Road, which traverses the west side. Because of its location as a gateway to both

sides of Lake Tenkiller, Keys is a focal point for a variety of businesses, including convenience stores, banks, restaurants, hair/nail salons, real estate agencies, churches, a donut shop, boat repair shop, auto repair shop, hotel, agriculture and feed store and the world-famous Jimmy Houston’s Outdoor Store. Keys is just minutes from Tahlequah and a wide variety of Lake Tenkiller destinations.

Cookson & Keys

Photo by M. Benedict-ScavoneBoating is very popular on Lake Tenkiller during the summer months and the communities of Cookson and Keys are a good point to start. Stores offer gas, food and beverages, and everything you need for a day of fun on the water.

Surrounding Communities

Vian Vian began as a trading post in the mid 1800s and was established as a town in 1902. No one is sure where the name Vian came from, but one popular version is that the town was named after an early settler, George Vi. The second syllable, ‘an’ was added making it Vian, which in the Cherokee language means “garfish.” Located nine miles south of Lake Tenkiller on Oklahoma State Highway 82 and just

off of Interstate-40, Vian is a quiet, friendly, family-oriented community. Several renovated buildings, many of which have been painted with historical murals, provide unique shopping and dining opportunities, including antiques and hand-made quilts. The city park, along the railroad tracks, hosts a weekly farmer’s market on Saturdays during the summer months, with a wide variety of locally-grown produce

and home-made products available. Vian City Lake, just north of town, offers fishing and an attractive walking trail around the lake, with strategically located benches and vegetation identification markers for the benefit of budding naturalists. Just south of Vian on Highway 82 is the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. The American bald eagle, along with thousands of Canadian and snow geese, take up residence at the refuge each year.

Surrounding communities offer activities for the whole family

Sallisaw Sallisaw, the county seat of Sequoyah County, is located at the southern edge of the

famed Cookson Hills, and near the navigation channel of the Arkansas River. Its name is from the French “salaisiau” meaning “salt provision.” Native Americans, explorers, trappers and early settlers were familiar with the natural salt deposits found near area streams. Today Sallisaw is an expanding center for commerce and tourism. Several museums and historical sites are located in or a short drive from the city, including Sequoyah’s home, northeast of the city. Sallisaw is home to Oklahoma’s first pari-mutual horse racing track, which currently operates as a

training track, plus a wide variety of businesses, casino, antique malls and speciality shops. The Sallisaw airport has lighted runways, air charter services available and an avid skydiver’s group. Numerous facilities for fishing, camping, hiking and boating are just minutes away. For more information, contact the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 251 (301 E.
