Hurricane Irma was the biggest storm on record according to Speaker Darryl Keys. His program was informative and entertaining. Picture of empty beer bottles with the caption, If these bottles break, run like Hell. There was a jeep with air mattresses tied all over it and several houses showing tie-down straps stretched over their roofs. I liked the shrink-wrapped SUV. A satellite shot showed Cat 4 Irma entirely covering Florida. Wind and flooding were a big problem. We are looking at months before recovery in many areas. Darryl mentioned Disaster Aid USA, an organization helping Rotary Clubs to assist in clean-up work.

Last Week’s Meeting by Guest Editor Bob Clendenin

Your Guest Editor enjoys the idea of having an evening meal for the first meeting of the month, but remains slightly confused about the timing. About half past 17 o’clock, I arrived to find many members chatting at the tables, but when the bell went off at 1806, the late Bob Mc D. was arriving just in time to lead God Bless America. Should we have an official Happy Hour time of 1730 or 1745?

Joe had already led us in reading the invocation and pledge. Speaking of Joe, in pre-meeting conversation I learned he and Ann have a new kitty cat. Ann calls her Buttercup while Joe calls her Precious. I saw her picture. Then Sherry pops out her phone with a picture of her new kitty, yet to be named by her granddaughter. Sergeant Cliff did the usual pins and badges thing then collected make-ups from Bob Mc D. and Steve V. for Bingo. Your Guest Editor presented a make-up for the canceled hurricane

meeting and the one he will miss this week. Lots of birthday and anniversary dollars. We did not know Sergeant Cliff has a daughter named Christian Eve, who was born on Christmas Eve. Bob Mc D. did a great job keeping track for the song.

Hurricane Irma was the biggest storm on record according to Speaker Darryl Keys. His program was informative and entertaining. Picture of empty beer bottles with the caption, “If these bottles break, run like Hell.” There was a jeep with air mattresses tied all over it and several houses showing tie-down straps stretched over their roofs.

What is the Object of Rotary?

Invocation

The Object of Rotary is to exchange and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

I. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; II. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

III. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life; IV. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Today’s Speaker — Jim Vanande

Methamphetamine problems in Charlotte County is the topic of our speaker this morning. Sergeant J.W. Vanande works for the Fugitive Apprehension Unit of the US Marshal Task Force. He is a deputy for the Charlotte County

Sheriff’s Department. Born in Arizona and raised in Iowa, Jim had a 23-year U.S. Navy Career. He joined the Navy in 1981. Stationed in Virginia, Florida, Illinois, California, Hawaii, Philippines, Diego Garcia BIOT, Panama, Germany and Crete. He retired in 2004. In Florida since 1993, he has three daughters and three grandsons. Jim serves as the current President of the Royal Order of Ponce deLeon Conquistadors of Charlotte County and member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. His Meth Training includes 80 hours of Basic DEA Narcotics, 40 hours of Basic Clandestine Laboratory Investigation, 40 hours of DEA Tactical Clandestine Laboratory Investigation, 40 hours of DEA Clandestine Laboratory Site Safety Officer, and 48 hours of DEA Authorized Container System Storage/Site Clean-Up. At the center of the universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants the best for

every person. Anything we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service. Amen Fred Rogers of Mister Roger’s neighborhood

Ride to End Polio Throwback Ponce

Rotary Three Week Calendar

Today our Greeter is Carl Rehling Our Bulletin Guest Editor is Chris Gover

In Tucson on November 18 more than 100 cyclists will join for a major fund-raiser, making money to end polio. The Rotary Club of Tucson Casas Adobes founded the ride in 2009. Each rider finds sponsors; as a result, millions of dollars have been raised. Top district, clubs and individuals are recognized on the founder’s Michael J. Harris Trophy on display at Rotary International. OK, so you don’t plan to visit Tucson anytime soon? Around the world from November 11 to 18 you can join the ride wherever you are on any exercise machine. Form a team and collect pledges for minutes rather than miles. Enjoy fitness and fellowship, doing your part to end polio forever. www.ridetoend polio.org

The 4-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
