As Guest Editor, I was prepared with a trusty pen, but forgot to bring paper. President Stephen was
helpful, offering a legal pad with over two pages attached. He hit the bell and Nora led with a nun’s
prayer, leaving us smiling and reflecting at the same time. “The nun” Nora remarked, “might be
Irish.”
President-Elect Cliff led the pledge and Bob McD (you can’t have too many Bobs) led singing of
God Bless America. Past President Nick introduced guests while District Governor Nominee Darryl
provided the “Cha, Cha, Cha!”
Sergeant Mike announced Bad Joke Tuesday with Past President Nick doing the honors. Mike then
mentioned washing love bugs due to his travels while Nora won the 50/50.
New member Andrew McDonald was inducted by President Stephen. Andrew gave us information
regarding his business and expectations about Rotary. “Give before you get” he told us.
Born in Belle Glade, the evening’s speaker Jim Dooley, is a three-generation Floridian while his wife
boasts five. He insisted his presentation about Florida’s Everglades is not about assessing blame for
today’s problems. It is a history through the year 2000.
The Everglades originally began near Orlando with the Kissimmee River discharging into Lake
Okeechobee. Water then flowed south into Florida Bay. Notable changes are attributed to Hamilton
Disston, Henry Flagler, Henry Plant, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Barron Collier, Herbert Hoover,
Harry Truman and Walt Disney.
Factors, many with best intentions, led to the problems
