A Fresh Start to a New Year By Guest Editor Mark Payne January 8, 2013

President Carl rang the bell, Wayne Sallade started us off with a prayer, someone over my left shoulder led the Pledge of Allegiance and Don Roll opened God Bless America. Plagued by respiratory prob-lems, several members were ab-sent, but Florida weather brought visitors. Fol-lowing discussion about how "fair and balanced" Rotarians find FOX News, we sang to Frank Cranton and Suren Gupta from West Ottawa,

Beverly Gray from Stur-bridge, Karol Wyckoff of Hyannis, Don Voigt from Parma, Mathew Cary of Venice Nokomis, and Brad Lines of Murdock. Birthday and An-niversary Dollars were for Mark Payne's five pound - three ounce baby, Tom Fisher's son, Wayne's 30

Invocation May each of us assembled here today enjoy the many offerings of Rotary.

May we abide by the rules we have established - those of trust, fellowship and ethics.

May we place Service above Self, in our daily endeavors.

May we always test ourselves and our efforts to be sure they are the truth, good for all concerned, of benefit to man-kind, and provide peace and under-standing.

Amen

Don’t forget “Make Up Monday” on January 28th! Meet with Area 7 Rotarians and AG Mike Colgan at the Tiki at 4 Points Sheraton Hotel at 7 pm!

on February 23rd. Proceeds benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Those who bring cans of food to the event will receive one ticket per can (up to 20 cans) which will register them for the grand prize: a trip for two to Key West and a two week-day stay at the Arbor Inn Hotel. Nancy Lisby introduced Steve Carter as our guest speaker. Steve gave us an in-depth look into the history of the Salvation Army. Among the myr-iad of interesting facts, Steve enlightened us as to the origin of the phrase "On the Wagon." He pointed out, as part of their early community ser-vice efforts, the Salvation Army would go through cities and towns picking drunkards off the street in a wagon... hence the phrase "On the Wagon." Tell us Steve, with the Pub Crawl, who will be driving the wagon?

Then Sherry Penfield sneaked out the door to bring Linda Lusk into the room. Linda was sur-reptitiously in attendance to present your Guest Editor with a lapel pin from The Center for Abuse and Rape Emergencies, recognized my becoming a charter Champion of their Circle of Compassion legacy society.

Needing no introduction, Selva Sunderavel pre-sented our program with a video of Somatheeram in Kerana, India, a very elegant and expensive way to relax. Wayne insisted on knowing the cost ($5000? That's after you get there) and Selva con-fessed he has visited for free. Rick Hayman led the Four-Way Test, releas-ing us into another beautiful Florida day.

Note the article in Time about polio. The author feels that the major obstacle in wiping out the virus for good is the Taliban, a major presence in Afghanistan and neighboring countries.

How does: Harry Chapin Food Bank + Punta Gorda Pub Crawl = Money for our club? Our club will have the opportunity to partner with the Harry Chapin Food Bank with $10 Raffle Tickets for a Key West trip for two with Travel and accommodations. The club keeps half the money. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Punta Gorda Pub Crawl . For more information go to: www.puntagordapubcrawl.com

THE

FOUR-WAY TEST

Of things we

think, say or do First, Is it the TRUTH?

Second, Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Third, Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Fourth, Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

“Don’t count the days, make the days count”

RI President-elect Ron Burton unveiled the above 2013-14 RI theme. “If we really want to take Rotary service forward, then we need to make sure that every Rotarian has a meaningful role to play, that they’re all making a contribu-tion, and that their contribution is valued.”

Burton said the July launch of The Rotary Foun-dation’s new grant model, Future Vision, makes it an exciting time to be a Rotarian. He said the new grant model, used by about 100 pilot dis-tricts since 2010, represents a new era for the Foundation, and will help Rotarians get excited about Rotary’s ability to change lives.

“It takes everything that is wonderful about Ro-tary and raises it to a new level — by encourag-ing bigger, more sustainable projects while pro-viding increased flexibility for local projects, both of which address the needs of the community being served,” he said.

Before the assembly, Burton asked each of the incoming District Governors to make a donation in their name to The Rotary Foundation in order to demonstrate leadership by example. At the assembly, he announced that all 537 governors-elect had complied; along with donations from all RI Board members and Foundation Trustees, the contributions totaled US$675,412.

“Now, I have to believe that some of this is money that The Rotary Foundation probably would not have received had I not asked. And I think that this is an important lesson” he said. “If you want somebody else to do something, you can just sit around and wait for them to get the idea, or you can ask.”

Burton applied that lesson also to membership development, which he insisted is the responsi-bility of every Rotarian. He told the audience that although he had been an active member of the Key Club, a youth program of Kiwanis Inter-national, he went on to join Rotary simply be-cause the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, invited him to.

“You have to ask,” he said.
