INTRODUCTIONMy experience in Chicago, with the goal to to create a portrait of the Latino Community was unparalleled: I found a rich rainbow of culture, very far from the Hollywood stereotypes that commonly reduce the re-ality of a community to a few characteristics, sometimes focusing only on the negative aspects of its people.

This photographic essay pretends to show a vibrant Latino Community in Chicago, with members both struggling and succeeding.

One common stereotype is that the Latino community is poor, but this is far from the truth, as the wealth of Latinos attracts many of today’s businesses. Furthermore, politicans are beginning to appreciate the size and relevance of Latinos in Chicago, and they are not afraid to show it.

Thus, this photographic essay was created to convey the realistic and vibrant Latino Community of Chicago, with community members who both struggle and succeed.

Although I cannot find a way to reduce the Latino community to one or two photographs, as I would risk creating yet another stereotype about a rich, profound and beautiful living community that constantly evolves, I hope that my photographs illustrate a message of diversity and the variety of values of Latinos in Chicago.

Visitar una ciudad como Chicago buscando retratar la vida de la Comunidad Latina re-sultó en una experiencia sin paralelo.

Encontré un abanico multicolor de la realidad latina, que se aleja de los estereotipos de Hollywood, donde se suele reducir la realidad de una comunidad a unos pocos aspectos, no siempre de la manera más positiva.

El presente ensayo fotográfico procura mostrar una comunidad latina vibrante y diversa, con miembros que luchan pero que también triunfan.

INTRODUCCIÓN

La comunidad latina está lejos de ser po-bre económicamente. En este sentido los negocios han encontrado un público con-sumidor importante. Por su parte las fuer-zas políticas también han comenzado a apreciar el tamaño y relevancia de esta comunidad.

No encuentro la manera de mostrar a la comunidad latina con una sola foto-grafía, estaría en riesgo de reducirla y crear un estereotipo más. Por tanto, esta serie fotográfica procura ser una pan-orámica de esta hermosa comunidad que está en constante evolución.

Espero que mis fotografías puedan comu-nicar un mensaje con la variedad y diver-sidad que encontré en la Comunidad La-tina en Chicago.

From the traditional “charro” to the rider of an “iron-horse”, the evolution of

the Mexican-American community is complex, mixing both traditional and

new cultural aspects to create a diverse lifestyle.

Businesses, from both Mexican and American origins use the parade as a show-

case for their brands, products and services. Again, this is a recognition of the

importance of the Mexican-American community.

Religion

Entre muchos de los aspectos que forman la identidad de una persona o un grupo está la religión. Sin embargo, en el caso de la comunidad méxico-estadounidense es, además, un vínculo a la tierra y cultura de origen.

De entre todas las manifestaciones religiosas, la más importante es la devoción a la Virgen de Guadalupe, que se encuentra profundamente arraigada en todos los aspectos de la vida latina.

Among other attributes, religion is an important part of individual and social identity. For the Mexican-American community, religión is, also, a link to their roots and cultura.

The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most important manifestation of religion among Mexican-Americans, and is found everywhere inside the Latino community.

In the Nican Mopohua, Our Lady of Guada-lupe is the bringer of “Flor y Canto,” which means, in Nahuatl, “flower and song”, in other words, “the truth”.

In the Des Plains sanctuary, both aspects of the Guadalupan message are present, with the flowers that embellish the Sanctuary, as well as the statues that depict music and chants.

These naïve murals combine many

icons of the Latino culture. The 18th

Station is an explosion of color and con-

trast that is truly overwhelming.

From charros to Mayans, an Aztec Cal-

endar, and from Frida Kahlo to skulls

and geometric patterns, the 18th Sta-

tion is a fiesta that celebrates the life of

the Latino Community.

Estos murales naïve combinan muchos de

los íconos de la cultura latina. La Estación

de la calle 18 es una explosión de color y

contraste verdaderamene avasalladora.

Desde charros a figuras mayas, el Cal-

endario Azteca, Frida Khalo, calaveras y

Filemón is an immigrant from Maravatío (Michoacán). He works in a restaurant in Greektown. Like many ille-gal immigrants, he’s very shy and doesn’t want to be pho-tographed. He’s afraid that “la migra” may catch him and deport him.

Pursuing the American Dream is no easy task, yet José Hernández, Ph.D., learned Russian and submitted his application for the NASA program 12 times until he was finally accepted. Latinos are not only in kitchens, but in the higher positions as well.

Alcanzar el Sueño Americano no es cosa fácil, sin embargo el Dr. José Hernández aprendió ruso y realizó 12 veces la solicitud para formar parte de los programas de la NASA hasta que fue finalmente aceptado. Los latinos también se encuentran fuera de las cocinas, en lo más alto.

Stereotypes

Rita Moreno is the only Latina who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She once said, referring to non-Latinos: “ They don’t know us.” When I found this poster at the National Museum of Mexican Art, I got an answer for those who want to get to know Latinos: “Look beneath the surface”.

The Latinos are sometimes depicted within the “Low Rider” stereotype: rusty old cars, high vol-ume music and cruising to chase “chicas.”

While I was doing this photographic essay, people in America was debating the im-migration law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona. When I found this sign I could only hope that the City of Chicago held a different attitude toward Latinos.

Cuando realizaba este ensayo fotográfico, todo Estados Unidos se debatía respecto de la ley sancionada por la gobernadora Jan Brewer de Arizona . Cuando encontré este letretro que

dice “No cruzar, por favor use el otro lado” solamente me quedaba esperar que la ciudad de Chicago tenga una actitud diferente respecto de los latinos.
