The day of the dead

• The day of dead is a mexican tradition. The people remember with honor and joy the people who died.

The origins

• In the past, maya culture lived in South America

• In the XVI century the spanish people arrived to Mexico and they tried to transform maya traditions into catholic ones (specially the day of deaths)

Result: they didn’t achieve their purpose

• But the coexistence of this two cultures and traditions (maya and catholicism) over the years made possible the

creation of the current ceremony day of the death.

Maya origins

• The Maya thought that the spirit of the men was immortal but not the body, so just the soul left to somewhere.

• The place where the souls went depended on the way they died.

Origin of the day of the dead• Tlalocan :It was the place where the

souls of the people whose death was related with the water, went. Tlalocan is a place to rest.

Tlaloc, god of rain

• Omeyocan:The place where the souls of the people who died in combat and women who died on their part went.

It was privilege to live in Omeyocan, because living there meant that you were a fighter.

The origin of the day of the dead

• Mictlán: The souls of the people who had a natural death, went into this kind of world. It was a very dark place, without windows, It was impossible to leave from there.

Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacíhuatl, lord and lady of death.

• Chichihuacuauhco : The place where went the souls of the children . In this place there was a big tree which dropped milk drops to feed the children.

• To celebrate this day, all the families who lost someone, go to visit the graves of their relatives in the cementry and put on them stuff like flowers, photos, food..

• An altar is a construction where the families put different things to remember the deads.

• Picture of the dead • A paint of a virgin or

saint • Twelve candles • Cempasúchil • Ground cross • A favourite drink or

food for the dead.
