VILLA CONTEMPORANEA PRESENTS LAURA SANTAMARIA FIERY LINE GUEST ARTIST JACOPO CASADEI INAUGURATION FRIDAY 19TH APRIL 2013 AT 6.30 P.M. THE EXHIBITION WILL LAST UNTIL JUNE 15, 2013 TUESDAY TO SATURDAY FROM 3.00 TO 7.00 P.M. Laura Santamaria (Monza, 1976) exhibits in her native town for the first time. She returns to the use of two elements dear to her, pigments and blacksmoke. “Fiery Line” is the title of her personal exbition which immediately evokes fire, an element very well known to Laura. The technique called “blacksmoke” is in fact Laura’s; right from her very first work, the permanent positioning on the ceiling of the Foundation Spinola Banna for Art in Poirino (Torino) in 2008, the artist consolidates this technique to the point of rendering it distinctive and used with great mastery. The “fiery line” defines a space beyond which we adapt our perception and live an emotional experience connected to our senses: the flame conveys emotions and embodies the invisible, the line quivers in irregular motions tracing in blacksmoke circular signs. Laura is attracted by transience and casual possibilities: she choses to work with changing and volatile elements such as pigments which are in continuous transformation. Even though her compositions are abstract, they have a strong reference to paintings of romantic landscapes; in fact Laura’s landscapes similar to that of romantic painters, are symbolic, filtered from memory and recollections, conjuring up visions. The gaze goes beyond the horizon, beyond the perspective distance, towards a creative process, a new alchemy composed of experienced materials and emotions. “My creative process is open to the unexpected, which together with its coincidence and revelations confirms how much art can go further than personal wishes”. In addition to a new series of pigments and blacksmoke on paper, the exhibition has a sculpture of crystals of selenite. It recalls immediately, Caspar David Friedrich’s “The sea of ice” (1824). The crystals here take on real forms, tridimensional forms which are also “fiery” because they sparkle and when the light goes through them, it makes them shimmer. Laura becomes a modern demiurge, her natural elements (fire, pigments, minerals and metals) are modelled and moulded according to a new emotional and sensorial order. It is by virtue of her spirituality and the way of understanding the landscape, that Laura’s poetic disposition meets that of Jacopo Casadei’s (Cesena, 1982), the artist whom she herself invited and presents in the exhibition with a piece of work which dialogues with the sculpture. His dreamlike and visionary painting, voices and embodies tensions and inner urges; we are facing an interior landscape made up of emotions and lived experiences. The explosion of colours overwhelms us and brings back dormant memories. His vibrating and sinuous brushstrokes approach Laura’s irregular line but it is in the “fiery” look that these two artists meet: a look full of enthusiasm.
