School Council Meeting Update
Last week we held our last meeting with the 2018 School Council before the upcoming AGM. The School Council election process is currently underway and it will be at the AGM on Wednesday 20th March that the new School Council will be confirmed. Our final meeting was an opportunity to rearticulate our newly developed Strategic Goal Plans that have emerged from the school review process at the end of 2018. Clare Read, our network School Improvement Education Leader and Region Representative, spent some time with School Council sharing her experience of the review and further clarifying key improvement strategies we will be targeting over the next four years. A succinct summary of the Strategic Plan Goals and Annual Improvement Plan will be shared with you once this complete document has been endorsed at the next School Council meeting. Our Annual Improvement Plan has also been developed, breaking the four year goals into small achievable steps that we will work together on this year.
A reminder that if you are interested in joining School Council for the next year to two years, nomination forms can be accessed at the front office.
STUDENT FOCUS—Swearing and Momo Challenge - Parents please be aware
Two student related issues were raised last week that I would like to draw to your attention. The first is in relation to the amount of swearing that is taking place in the school yard, particularly with our middle to senior students. This was raised as an issue at School Council and in talking to several students they confirm reports that some of our students are using foul, inappropriate language when not in earshot of teachers. Swearing will not be tolerated in our school and if a child is found to be swearing consequences will follow as well as notification home to you. I ask you to please discuss this with your children, reminding them about how swearing may make others feel around them and to also encourage them to be brave and report anyone swearing to a staff member confidentially if needed.
Many parents will already be aware of the “Momo Challenge” which has caused much concern to many families and children last week. This is a social media hoax that unfortunately has spread on Facebook, Youtube and other social media platforms. There is a scary image that appears mid viewing, enticing children and adolescents to perform a series of dangerous tasks. Some of our children have seen or heard of this, causing understandable worry and concern to them and their parents. We are alerting you to this rather than talk to the children as many will be hopefully unaware.
We encourage you to investigate what this is yourself so you are fully aware of what it is so you are fully informed should your child discuss this with you or be presenting any unusual behaviours. We will be vigilantly watching out for any discussion in the yard and addressing this immediately with the children concerned should it come to our attention.
Please find further in Shannon’s Welfare focus a timely reminder about cyber safety that appeared on social media platforms just recently. It is a succinct overview of how to SET UP DEVICES SAFELY FOR KIDS, giving adults instructions on how to do this easily. We will continue to educate our students about Cyber Safety but this needs to remain a partnership between home and school. Thank you to those parents who alerted us to the Momo challenge. If you have any further concerns that present at any time, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher .
WORKING BEES this year
It has been a while since we have had a working bee and to ensure we hit them hard this year we have set our four dates already. Further in the Linkletter you will find our four working bee dates that will target different areas of the school. These are great community events and I encourage you to lock at least one into you calendar if you can this year.

CPR Update
On Thursday our staff spent an extra afternoon formally updating their CPR qualifications. Staff undertake this annually as well as Anaphylaxis and Defibrillation training. We have a defibrillation machine in the school, located near the First Aid Room, and these three training opportunities form an important part of our safety and welfare approach in the school.
HARMONY DAY and the FOOTSTEPS DANCE COMPANY
As shared at the end of last year, we will be endeavouring to provide a variety of performing arts opportunities throughout the year, including performance, dance, percussion and singing. Performing Arts has been launched in Term one within our Connect Program with many class-rooms using role play and performance to demonstrate our EMOTIONS and SOCIAL learning. More formally, the FOOTSTEPS DANCE COMPANY have burst into the school, taking every student through an engaging session of movement and dance. Last Tuesday our Preps to Senior School were put through high energy dance routines that each focused on a different culture around the world. Our Preps learnt moves from around the world, with other year levels moving to Brazil, Africa, Samoa (fused with Hip Hop) and much more. The children will be dancing tomorrow and again next Tuesday with the
dance company. This will all culminate with the children performing their dances in front of the whole school on THURSDAY 21st MARCH from 9am—HARMONY DAY. We invite you to come and watch these dances on this morning if you are available to attend. Harmony Day is our annual celebration of diversity and culture and we are really excited to launch the day with these dances by our talented kids. If you have orange clothing, rib-
bons, hair ties etc these will be encouraged to be worn on this day to help celebrate.
QLD FLOOD DONATIONS through the RED CROSS
Thank you for your kind donations to the QLD Floods. We are still looking to add to our collection so if you have a few loose gold coins and are able to donate we would be very grateful. Just send this along to your child’s teacher and the Junior School Council will count up the amount and present the total at this week’s assembly before sending it off.

Building Independence
A key task of parenting is raising independent, self-motivated children who are able to appropriately use the sup-
port of parents and friends as they grow. You can help your child develop a healthy sense of independence.
Independence is an important aspect of your child’s development. From the age of two, children strive for more
independence. From this age, you should encourage your child to make simple choices in their day to day lives.
The degree of independence you can expect from your child must be appropriate to their age and abilities and varies with each different situation. Children may be more independent in some situations than others.
There are many reasons why children can struggle with becoming more independent. One is their developmen-tal stage: as this required quite sophisticated thinking skills, or because they live very much in the moment.
It can be a common pitfall for busy parents to do things for children that children are capable of doing them-selves. Though it may actually take more time initially for parents to support children to do age-appropriate tasks for themselves, your child's self-confidence and independence will grow as a result.
Ways to encourage appropriate independence
• Allow your child to make simple choices from a range of options you are prepared to accept. For example, allow your children to have a say in what they want in their lunch (brain food/snacks) or which clothes they will be wearing each day. Let children make mistakes and support them to learn from them.
• Let children participate in household chores, such as dishes, taking the rubbish out and making beds. De-velop a responsibility chart so your children can keep track of the household chores they have completed.
• Let children know you are interested in their thoughts and ideas. Ask their opinions on things that are to do with them.
• Respect your child's decisions wherever possible.
• Help children to understand the impact of their choices.
• Teach children problem solving skills – encourage them to think about what they could do to fix the prob-lem rather than telling them what to do.
• Provide positive support for your child in situations that may be challenging.
• Encourage and praise children’s attempts to do things for themselves no matter what the outcome.
• Provide age-appropriate toys so that children can learn to play by themselves for short periods of time (excluding technology – iPads….)
• Help children take responsibility for packing up their toys.
• Teach older children to use a watch and incorporate time in some directions you give. For example "You can go next door to play, but I want you to be home by 4:30."
• Help children to set achievable goals and work toward achieving those goals.
• Children to pack their school bag – knowing what is in there.
• Children to carry their own bag to school and walk into the classroom and complete their morning routine.
As your child progresses through primary school, they’ll be expected tbe-come increasingly independent and take charge of their own learning
and organisation.

What is Executive Functioning?
Executive Functioning is a set of mental skills that help you get things done. These skills are controlled by an
area of the brain called the frontal lobe.
Executive Function helps you: manage time, pay attention, switch focus, plan and organise, remember details,
avoid saying things or doing the wrong things and multi task.
It’s important that children experience time when they are involved in less structured activities - working to-
wards goals, making decisions, and regulating their behaviour.
Children may learn more when they have the responsibility to decide for themselves what they're going to do
with their time. Self-directed executive function develops mostly during childhood, it includes any mental pro-
cesses that help us work toward achieving goals—like planning, decision making, manipulating information,
switching between tasks, and inhibiting unwanted thoughts and feelings.
Structured activities is anything organized and supervised by adults—like music lessons, sporting activities or
community service. For an activity to be less-structured, the child must be in charge of deciding what to do and
figuring out how to do it. All forms of free play counted as less-structured activities. A balance of structured and
unstructured activities is important for all children. Structured activities such as team based activities allow a
child to develop appropriate social and problem solving skills.
When children are in control of how they spend their time, they are able to get more practice working toward
goals and figuring out what to do next. For instance, a child with a free afternoon ahead of them might decide
to read a book. Once they’ve finished, they might decide to draw a picture about the book, and then they’ll de-
cide to show the drawing to their family. This child will learn more than another child who completes the same
activities, but is given explicit instructions throughout the process.

Many kids are lucky enough these days to be transitioning into the world of owning their own device – iPad,
iPhone, tablet, laptop….. There are plenty of things we can be doing all the time to ensure our kids are incorpo-
rating the technology safely and responsibly and finding a balance with the many other elements of their lives.
But there are also a few things we can do before we even hand over the device…..this potential window to the
world.
Set up any inherent privacy settings on devices and search engines. For these settings the device will ask for a
passcode which obviously should not be revealed to others. This ensures the restrictions cannot be changed.
Some of the restrictions and settings include:
Safari: Go to Settings/General/Restrictions and then set up the restrictions you think are necessary. This may
be restricting certain content, sites, apps, podcasts, music, apps for only 8 year olds etc
Youtube: go to settings/tap on safe search filtering/tap on strict (For younger kids the YouTube Kids app is now
available. Be aware that this uses up a lot of data when not on wifi)
Always remember that setting up your settings certainly help to protect some of the content making its way to
innocent eyes….but no safety setting or filter is ever a guarantee that inappropriate content won’t get through.
Turn off in app purchases: settings/general/restrictions/tap on in-app purchases to off (not green)
Disallow the uploading or deleting of apps: settings/general/restrictions/installing apps or deleting apps
Guided access can be used for little kids or anytime you want them to stay within an app and not leave and go to other
apps or sites. Go to settings/ general/accessibility, scroll to learning, click Guided Access and toggle it on.
Disable safari browser: (settings/general/restrictions/allowed content) if you don’t want them to be able to search any-
thing.
Make itunes safe: anything that has been downloaded on your itunes account on other devices can be accessed
on new devices so if you want to keep this separate, then go to itunes on your computer, go to edit, preferences and click
parental. You can decide which shows and ratings are appropriate for this device.
Now obviously not all of these restrictions will be necessary for every child. The age, maturity level and critical thinking
skills your child has developed will all help determine how much they have access to and what they can and cannot man-
age on their own.
And some final things to remember: Always ensure the rules are set up early from the start. Have some ‘no brainer’
rules that your children understand are part and parcel of the privilege of owning a device.
Monitor the device especially if your child is young. More importantly monitor your child, their habits and their behaviours.

You are invited to join us at all or any of the GK Working Bees for 2019. Working Bees provide a great oppor-tunity to make a contribution to improving the school grounds and a chance to meet new families. As there are only three to four working bees a year it’s great to get as many people as possible to come along and work on projects that enhance our students’ grounds.
The Working Bees will be focusing on a broad range of areas as show below. The first will be a grounds tidy-up with planting, weeding, trimming and mulching.
IF possible please bring alongside yourself:
Wheelbarrows Secateurs and pruners Rakes and shovels Hedge trimmers Brooms and/or Petrol Blower
Children are welcome as Mrs Webb will be looking for lots of helpers for mulching, pruning, watering and weeding the surrounding garden beds.
There will be a free BBQ and drinks after the working bee.
Families who attend will be in the draw for the special Movie ticket prize.

If your child needs medication for a short time, due to an illness, a Medica-tion Authority form needs to be complet-ed and signed. This form is to accom-pany the medication and dropped into the office. Please do not send your child to school with medication in their bag.
HEAD LICE ALERT
We have had a number of students within the junior and senior grades that have re-cently been treated for head lice. Can you please take a moment to check your child's hair and commence appropriate treatment where necessary. All grades will be checked throughout this term and notices sent home where required. To avoid the spread of head lice it is highly recommend-ed that children with long hair come to school with it neatly tied up.

Second Hand Uniform Shop Announcement
The Glen Katherine Parents & Friends Association would like to advise of some changes to the
way the Second Hand Uniform Shop will be run in 2019.
From Monday, 4 March 2019 the Second Hand Uniform Shop will no longer be accept-
ing items to sell on Commission on behalf of families. The Second Hand Uniform Shop is
run by a group of volunteers within the Parents & Friends Association and relies on the efforts of
many different people to each pitch in a little and keep the shop running. The procedure around
processing a Commission sale is extremely time consuming and one which the PFA is regretfully
no longer able to sustain.
Commission items already in the shop as at Monday, 4 March 2019 will continue to be available
for sale during 2019 and Commissions paid out as usual. At the end of this year families with un-
sold Commission items will be contacted and given the option of taking them back, or leave them
in the shop as a donation.
Families wanting to sell their second hand uniforms can do so through a newly created
Facebook group ‘GK Primary Second Hand Uniform Sales’ and parents can advertise
their items and sell directly to other parents.
Donations of Second Hand Uniforms will still be gratefully accepted and the shop will
continue to be open on Friday mornings from 8.30am – 9.00am. We remain cash only, but
are happy to hold items in the shop or have them available for collection from the front office at a
later date.
We are delighted to highlight that prices in the Second Hand Uniform Shop have remained un-
changed since 2015 and will remain unchanged for the rest of 2019.
Families wishing to donate items can drop them into the Second Hand Uniform Shop on Friday
mornings between 8.30am – 9.00am or into the front office at other times. Please note that we
can only accept items that are part of the current official uniform (ie. no department store track-
suit pants, or plain t-shirts with no school logo), and which are freshly laundered and in good con-
dition (no holes or rips, or major stains).
The Second Hand Uniform Shop is a wonderful fundraiser for the school and provides
families with an affordable and practical alternative to the cost of a brand new uni-
form. We hope that this new way forward will streamline the process for our valuable volunteers
and enable us to continue to provide this important option for GK families for many years to
come.
Any questions please feel free to contact [email protected]
The PFA thanks you for your continued support.

might be easier to order outside of this time (seems more noticeable on Fridays), as explained last week orders can be cancelled if done before our
cut-off time if you no longer need it due to illness etc. If you need to contact us because you have been unable to order lunch, please ring after 9AM
when there are more hands on deck to help out (especially on Frantic Fridays).
Also, it’s best not to use my private mobile number, especially after 8am, as I don’t always hear it and things may not get sorted. It’s best to ring 9431-1599 &
ask for the canteen – AFTER 9am.
I am putting together a Special Lunch for Thursday 4th April & information will come home in the next couple of weeks. Please note, these are optional and it is
by no means compulsory to have these lunches. Ordering by QKR is preferred & and please make sure orders are in by the cut off. We could be doing over
400 lunches on the day & need time to get in the supplies etc so can’t accept late orders. If you miss this one, don’t despair there will be others throughout the
year.
The Roster is looking so good but I still would like some help on the 3rd & 4th Tuesday and 2nd Wednesday. If you are interested in giving canteen duty a
go please contact me via the canteen Tues to Thurs 9am to 1.30pm or Fri 11.30am to 1.30pm in person or on 94311599, via cunning-
[email protected] or by dropping a note in the class lunch tub.
Cheers, Suzi Cunningham
