GENERAL

1. What is Leapfrog Works?

Leapfrog Works is a dynamic 3D subsurface modelling solution that turns complex data into clear, easy to interpret models. Works helps you visualise and understand the geology so you can communicate and make better decisions on all your civil engineering and environmental projects.

2. Who is Leapfrog Works for?

Leapfrog Works is designed specifically to support civil engineering and environmental project workflows and can benefit all teams involved in civil engineering and environmental projects, from global design and build organisations, to government bodies, to the smallest geotechnical or environmental consultants. Leapfrog Works is particularly relevant for reducing risk on projects involving;

• large scale or deep earthworks, such as tunnelling, rail, roads, dams, or

commercial buildings,

• complex or challenging geology,

• groundwater or contaminants,

• multiple internal or external parties in the project venture, who need to

collaborate around a common understanding of the ground conditions.

• Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows

3. How does Leapfrog Works benefit Civil Engineering projects?

With Leapfrog Works you can rapidly model geological and geotechnical domains and then import the engineering design into the model to visualise the impact, and design better solutions for the prevailing ground conditions. It provides insight into what to expect in the construction phase of the project and helps identify areas where the design may need to be examined more closely given the expected geology. You can then publish the geological or geotechnical interpretations as a 3D BIM model for projects utilising BIM workflows.

Even the best model is of limited use unless you can share it and collaborate around it with confidence. Leapfrog Works is part of an ecosystem of solutions that enable effective model management and easy sharing anywhere in the world.

4. How does Leapfrog Works benefit Environmental projects?

With Leapfrog Works you can model both ground and groundwater domains fast and effectively in full 3D. The optional Contaminants extension makes best practise geostatistical approaches easy to apply when modelling contaminant plumes or the freshwater/saltwater interface, and with the optional Hydrogeology extension geological models and unit properties can be exported to run flow simulations and the time sequenced output of the flow model can be viewed and shared through Leapfrog Works.

Environmental projects have diverse stakeholders with varying levels of technical knowledge. Leapfrog Works is part of an ecosystem of solutions that enable effective model management and straightforward sharing of your 3D insights to engage

stakeholders with ease and confidence.

5. We use CAD software already – why is Leapfrog Works different?

Leapfrog Works is implicit 3D modelling software, that can incorporate outputs from CAD software, and is not Computer Aided Design software itself. The key difference is that Works combines disparate data from ground investigations together with a geotechnical or geoscientist’s expert interpretation to construct a dynamically linked 3D model based on common geological principles. This is a model of the ground conditions, based on available data which can often be sparse. Leapfrog software is based on the FastRBF™ algorithm which makes the dynamic linking of data to 3D model possible. This provides critical benefits to geotechnical and environmental consultants including:

• New data or interpretations can be added, and the model run again in minutes, without having to build the model from first principles again.

• Cross sections can be cut from anywhere in the 3D model on demand and are automatically regenerated when the model is updated.

• 3D visualisation and easy sharing of interactive 3D scenes to engage your stakeholders.

In contrast CAD software are, as the name suggests, design packages. They allow you to draw what you intend to build or excavate or represent an as-built design. The surfaces are often predictable and controlled completely by the designer, as opposed to complex geological contact surfaces shaped by nature.

6. How does Leapfrog Works help with geotechnical analysis?

Geotechnical analysis software allows users to set up the conditions for a specific geotechnical problem based on some initial representation of the geology. Leapfrog Works support this workflow by modelling the geology and producing 3D volumes or the creation of 2D cross sections. Whether 2D or 3D, this geology is then used to seed the geotechnical analysis with the best representation of the geology. Typically, the results of the geotechnical analysis can then be taken back into Leapfrog Works for display in the context of the wider site.

7. Can I try out Leapfrog Works for myself?

Yes! It is easy to set yourself up with a trial. Simply go to https://trials.leapfrog3d.com/ and follow the simple steps to get up and running on a free, no obligation, 14 day trial of Leapfrog Works and its extensions. You will receive a series of emails directing you to handy online resources to help you understand Works, it’s benefits for you, and to ensure you get the most out of your trial.

8. How do I install Leapfrog Works software?

Depending on your internal IT policy you may need your IT department to install the software for you. The installation file is available for download in MySeequent and can be copied to a USB or network drive for further deployment.

It is recommended that Network Administrators either take a trial themselves or run the Leapfrog Start utility to confirm that all Leapfrog web services supporting seamless operation of Leapfrog Works can be accessed from within your organisations network. For more information on Leapfrog Start see Info for IT Admins.

9. How does Leapfrog Works build reliable 3D geological models so fast?

Leapfrog Works uses the proven Leapfrog 3D implicit modelling engine and toolset that has been used by geologists worldwide for over a decade. The Leapfrog 3D engine is fast

Some native Civil3D objects in the dwg format must be first exploded in Civil3D into simpler objects before import into Leapfrog Works. Similarly, some complex dgn objects must first be dropped a level in Microstation, OpenRoads, OpenRail or OpenSite before import into Leapfrog Works. External references in Bentley design files are not supported.

13. What BIM workflows and formats are supported?

Leapfrog Works supports export of geological, numeric and combined models in Industry Foundation Class (IFC) version 4, Bentley design (DGN) or Autodesk drawing (DWG) format. This allows geotechnical engineers or engineering geologists to directly publish their 3D interpretations into industry standard and open BIM projects, so all disciplines and stakeholders can see the 3D ground model and how it will interact with the 3D design. IFC exports can also take advantage of borehole database exports and user defined attributes export, for richer communication into BIM projects.

14. Can I easily create cross sections and long sections?

Yes. Leapfrog Works supports cross section creation and layouts which can be exported for use in reports or as inputs for other software packages, including geotechnical software and numerical analysis software that operates on 2D geometry such as the GeoStudio suite of applications. Regular sections and long (fence) sections can be simply generated from alignments, chainage displayed, and multiple layouts managed easily using a master layout, to provide conventional project documentation.

15. Can I model groundwater domains?

Yes. Import your screen definitions along with downhole water level and quality data to model plumes and hydrogeological domains. Samples stored as points or continuous downhole data like MIP and CPT numeric values can also be incorporated into the model, as can Geophysical grids from Oasis montaj or VOXI geophysical interpretations. With the optional Hydrogeology extension transmissivity and storativity, values can be associated with the hydrogeological domains and gridded for export to flow model simulations and the
