Lesson 008

Vocabulary:* Same as previous lesson.

Note:“Magandang” is a shortened form of “Maganda na.” There are two ways to form a sentence with “na.” See example below. In Tagalog, if you’re beginning to describe something your best bet in getting it right is using the “na” rather than the widely used “ng” form.

Exercise:English: Beautiful Girl.Tagalog: Maganda na babae.Tagalog: Babae na Maganda.

1. Describe: Drink bottle _______________________________________________________2. Describe: Road _______________________________________________________3. Describe: Paper _______________________________________________________4. Describe: Book _______________________________________________________5. Sentence 5 _______________________________________________________

Lesson 010

Vocabulary:* Same as lesson’s 9

Note:Double-double is great thing. Here’s two simple Rules:

1) If your adjective ends with a vowel, you can use “ng”2) If not, use “na” before and after the second adjective (see example)

Our lesson today is: intensifying our description of a subject. For instance, if we’re describing a “Beautiful” object – and the girl is “very, very” beautiful. Here’s the sample:

English: Beautiful Girl.Tagalog: Magandang babae. (From previous lesson)

Rule 1: Magandang maganda na babae.Rule 2: Maganda na maganda na babae

Exercise:1. A vivid red comb _______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________2. A very smart kid _______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________3. A very heavy cat _______________________________________________________

Lesson 011

Vocabulary:** See lesson 9 and 10 for the exerciseMarami..........................................................ManyAng................................................................The

Note:

Although there is not really a rule named “Double-double” in the Tagalog, it is an easier way to remember how the sentence formation works. For adverbs (words describing an adjective) it’s a little different. Using the sentence from the previous lesson, we will replace it with our new vocabulary – plus having the same “ng” ending.

Tagalog: Magandang Maganda na babae.Tagalog: Maraming Maganda na babae.English: Many beautiful girls.

In the case of adverbs, or in this particular case, “Maraming” is a shortened form of “Marami ang” and not “marami ng.” The same as previous lessons, to get it right the first time, always go with the long form.

Exercise:Refer to lesson 9.

1. Heavy cat _______________________________________________________2. Smart kid _______________________________________________________3. Clean room _______________________________________________________4. Triangular cut _______________________________________________________5. Red comb _______________________________________________________

Lesson 012

Note:Today’s lesson: simple phrases to memorize that you can use absolutely anywhere.

Easy phrases:

Phrase MeaningMaraming Salamat...............Many ThanksSalamat.................................ThanksWalang ano man..................It was nothing/You’re welcomeAko (ay) si {pangalan}...........I am {name}.

Exercise:Practice the pronunciation of these. That’s all.

Lesson 013

Vocabulary:Mga...............................................................(*no translation)

Note:In the English Language, making a noun plural the only thing that changes in the word is the additional “s.” For example the word “girl,” its plural form is “girls.” Making that distinction, it is quite different in Tagalog. To make the noun plural, the word “mga” is inserted in front of the noun. Here’s the formula:

“Mga + Noun”Sample:

English: GirlsTagalog: Mga babae.

Exercise:Tuesdays _______________________ Combs __________________________Afternoons/Noons _______________________ Papers __________________________Drink Bottles _______________________ Nights __________________________Yesterdays _______________________ Mondays __________________________Teachers _______________________ Books __________________________Thursdays _______________________ Sundays __________________________Reds _______________________ Roads __________________________Noons _______________________ Mornings __________________________Wednesday _______________________ Cats __________________________Rooms _______________________ Fridays __________________________

Vocabulary:Mayroon........................................................There is/There are/Have/Has

Note:In the modern Tagalog Language, the word “mayroon” is always spoken with an “ng” at the end. Fluent speakers of the language shorten its pronunciation by removing the “y” to sound “meh-ron.” The normal form (mayroon) is used only if the word that goes right after is a pronoun like he, she, they, etc. (Right now, this has not been tackled – Worry not, it will be done on another lesson).

Sample:English: There are girl/sTagalog (Singular): Mayroong babae.Tagalog (Plural): Mayroong mga babae.

Exercise:Tuesdays _______________________ Combs __________________________Afternoons/Noons _______________________ Papers __________________________Drink Bottles _______________________ Nights __________________________Yesterdays _______________________ Mondays __________________________Teachers _______________________ Books __________________________Thursdays _______________________ Sundays __________________________Reds _______________________ Roads __________________________Noons _______________________ Mornings __________________________Wednesday _______________________ Cats __________________________

Note:If you want to specifically express the numbers/counts of the subject, the word “mga” is no longer used. For example, if you would like to express that you have “Five combs;” here’s how you would do it.

English: There are five combs.Learn Tagalog Show. 2007-2009 10 [email protected], Canada Website: http://learntagalogshow.wordpress.comNot for commercial redistribution. Twitter: http://twitter.com/learn_tagalog

Short-form Tagalog: Mayroong limang suklay. Long-form Tagalog: Mayroong lima na suklay}

* The “ng” rule applies to numbers also. If it ends in a consonant, use “na.” You can probably guess why!

Lesson 016

Vocabulary:Ako................................................................I/MeAy..................................................................(an article)

Note:As indicated on the vocabulary section, the word “Ako” means I or Me. When a sentence starts with a pronoun, such as “ako” it is almost and always followed by an article. See the example below, analyze how the phrase created from previous lesson turned into “I have” from “There is” by simply adding “Ako ay.” Thus, the rule is if the word “mayroon” is preceded by a name of a person and a pronoun its meaning changes to “have/has.”

English: I have five combs.Short-form Tagalog: Ako ay mayroong limang suklay.

Exercise:Please provide the plural form. Put N/A, if it’s not applicable.

Vocabulary: (Pronouns)Ba..................................................................(signals a question)Ikaw...............................................................You

Note:For the meantime, let’s forget the other pronouns we had learned before. Today it’s “Ikaw” and “Ba.” The two letter word “Ba” makes a sentence into a question. “Ba” comes (1) after the pronoun and (2) before the article.

English: Do you have five combs?Short-form Tagalog: Ikaw ba ay mayroong limang suklay?

Exercise: 1. Do you have four cats? __________________________________________________2. Do you have four drink bottles? __________________________________________________3. Note for Exercise 2:On Exercise 2, you will notice that the English translations are similar. However, the condition sets them apart. Think of these two sentences, “Dad, does our family have five dogs?” and “Teacher, does our family have five dogs?” The first sentence the Dad is included in the group. In the second sentence, the teacher is outside of the group. See below.

Phrase:Nasaan ba......................................................Where is/are?

Note:When asking for a location, the phrase “Nasaan ba” is used. Its English translation is “Where is.” In addition to that fairly easy phrase, keep in mind that when asking for a location, the location must be introduced with the word “Ang.” Taking what has been taught on previous lesson, the word means “The.”

Note:Another easy lesson! In this lesson, we are changing our sentences to say “Where is that.” To do the latter, instead of using “Ang;” the word “iyong” will be used. “iyong” is a shortened form of “na iyon” which means “is that” or if plural, “are those.”

Lesson 024

Vocabulary: Si....................................................................(See simplified explanation)

Note:Telling the location of a person is the lesson.

The small word “Si” acts more like the “The” or the “A” exclusively used for a name or an individual. It is an introductory word for a name/individual. The better translation for the word “Si” is “It is.” “Si” cannot be used to name a group as there is another word for that.

“Sina” is the collective version of “Si.” The one similar thing they have is: both are introductory words for people. “Sina” differs as it introduces a group.

For example, a person named “Robert” has a couple of friends and they are all in the bathroom; and you don’t know the name of his friends. In English, you would probably say “Martin and his friends are in the bathroom.” In Tagalog, you use the word SINA to acknowledge a group.

Using SINA, you only need one person's name to identify a group. SINA + PERSONAL NAME. For example, "sina Robert,” the phrase identifies Robert belonging in a group of people. SINA is very generic and does not tell individual's relationship with the group members; however, it very much acknowledges their number.

Lesson 026

Note:In the previous lessons, we learned how to ask for places, tell where a place is, and tell where an individuals or groups are. You may think that we have forgotten one essential thing: Asking the location of a person or a group. But, we haven’t. It is the today’s lesson.

You may find this lesson a breeze. Why? Because, you have learned how to ask for a location already! Whatever you have learned about that lesson, we are using here: the phrase “Nasaan ba.” See the example below, instead of putting a location after the phrase, the name is added. Remember that “si” and “sina” are used for people/group.

Exercise:

Lesson 027

Note:“Is Martin in the first floor?”“Is the bathroom in the second floor?”

Is the subject [found or at or in] the location? Are the subjects [found or at or in] the location?

If you want to ask whether or not a person/group/place is at a certain location, “Nasaan ba” is no longer used. Why so? Because the answer to “Nasaan ba” asks for a specific location! The bolded sentences above are the sort of sentences that we will be forming in Tagalog.

In this lesson, the interrogative phrase is answerable by a “Yes” or “No.” To form such a sentence, “Nasa” is used. What will make our sentence formation a question is the word “Ba.”

Sentence Formation:Nasa Location ba Person/group/place?

Exercise: Translate the following.

Note:Lesson 31, haven’t we gone so far already? I will say: we have. Learning bits and pieces of a language goes a long way. If you look back at Lesson 30, in just 30 lessons we have tackled that much vocabulary. Moreover, the words we have used thus far are modern vocabularies used by native speakers.

Today, we will add to the greetings we had learned before. Remember Lesson# 1, we learned how to say our good greetings. This lesson is no different; we are simply adding - with our already-known vocabularies - some honorifics. Samples of honorifics are “Sir, Ma’am, Lady, Prince, Royal Highness, Miss;” those words are titles you give to people in order to show respect.

Phrases:Ako (po) ay (si or ang)...................................I am

Note:After you have performed your greetings, there will come a time that you would have to introduce yourself.

To use the phrase with correctness, use “SI” for personal name and “ANG” for titles. See example:

Note:You learned to introduce people in the prior lessons. So, now, you are going to negate your statement. If before, you said “I am Julia.” Today, you are going to say “I am not Julia.”
