Roles and Responsibilities

Hours at the Training School are: -

9.50am PROMPT - 5.00pm approximately

Career learning, information, advice and guidance mentoring sessions

are delivered during the training day, or at any time during the week

upon request.

A register is taken at 10.00am; anyone arriving after this time must

approach the Recruitment and Retention Team and explain the

reasons for being late. Constant late attendance will lead to

disciplinary action.

Your time at the Training School will involve attending theory

lessons (background knowledge), workshops, role-plays and

completing practical training and assessments.

Each session lasts approximately 3 hours. You will receive a lunch

break of up to 1 hour. Salon working hours should be advised by your

employer. You should not be asked to work more than 5 days per

week (including your training day).

You will receive a contract of employment/Apprenticeship Agreement

from your employer at the start of your employment. This will include

your employment rights and

responsibilities. If you do not receive a

contract you must inform your Assessor,

Reviewer or R&R immediately. This will

confirm that your employment began. Lesley McCormack presents a Learner with achievement award

HOT TIP! Be punctual…

“It is important to come to the

Training School on time so that you

can complete all your work. You get to

work with a client not a doll. Plus

being late is a bad habit!”

Absence If you are going to be absent on a training day at Michaeljohn for

any reason, it is your responsibility to telephone the Training School

at the earliest opportunity. Always ask to speak to a member of

staff, NEVER leave messages with other learners. All absenteeism is

recorded and automatically reported to your employer; constant

unauthorised absence will not be accepted and may lead to

disciplinary action.

What we expect from you

Smoking

STRICTLY no smoking at any time at the Training School. If you

observe a client smoking please inform an Assessor. You will receive

a copy of the no smoking policy at induction.

Eating

IN DESIGNATED ROOMS ONLY. Please leave the area clean and

tidy afterwards. Strictly NO chewing gum as it is messy to get rid

of and a hairdresser chewing gum gives an unprofessional image to

clients.

Mobile Phones

If you are carrying a Mobile Phone, it must be switched off during

all training sessions and exams as they can distract concentration.

Failure to do so will result in confiscation until 5.00pm.

Valuables

These may be kept in a secure area, please see your Assessor to

arrange this. MJTS cannot be held responsible for any missing items

section clips, Hairdressing Bag, Manikin Head and Clamp, Head Jog 201 Comb,

What should you wear at the Training School?

The Training School has a dress policy. All staff and

learners are required to wear black or

black/white/grey when attending the Training School,

some learners may be required to wear a uniform. You

may accessorise with a colour of your choice. Attention

must be paid to your general appearance i.e. clothes,

shoes, hair, cosmetics, personal hygiene. Open toed or

high heeled shoes should not be worn. Open toed shoes

can be dangerous if chemicals or scissors are

dropped. High heels effect posture and can cause

tiredness and aching legs and feet. Midriffs must

be covered. It is dangerous for hair to get into

exposed belly buttons/piercing.

At induction you may be provided with a portfolio for which a small

fee will be charged.

Pens/Pencils/Paper must be brought to the Training School for

each training session.

Your personal kit must be brought to the

Training School after initial training; it must

then be brought to the Training School each

week.

Protective clothing must be worn when

mixing or applying chemicals this is provided

for your safety by MJTS - See Health &

Safety induction.

Holidays

Holiday entitlements may vary between employers. Your employer

will inform you of your entitlements.

However by law you are currently entitled to a minimum of 28 days

per year and this includes bank and public holidays.

Holiday entitlements have to be earned. So, for example if you have

an entitlement of 28 days per year that would be 2.33 days for

every month you worked.

Your holidays should be arranged in

advance with your employer. You

should also inform our Recruitment

and Retention team. (So we know why

you will be absent from the Training

School.)

“I think it is good that you get paid

while you are training because it gives

you the boost to carry on learning and

it doesn’t stop you having fun-you

have money to go out with friends at

the weekend.”

Your pay and status

You do not work a week in hand. Pay days differ from salon to salon

but are normally Friday or Saturday. You will be informed of your

status at the beginning of your course. Your status will be one of the

following: Intermediate Apprentice or Advanced Apprentice. The

minimum starting rate for an apprentice is £__ per hour (from

October ‘10 until 30th September ‘11). This is being reviewed in

October 2012 and will increase to£____. You can expect to earn

more as you progress through your apprenticeship but this is up to

your employer to decide and will depend on your skill levels.

Employment Termination

If for whatever reason you lose your position within your place of

employment (salon) you must notify the Training School immediately,

speak to the Recruitment Team or your Assessor. Arrangements will

be made to reposition you in another salon as quickly as possible.

In the meantime you may be eligible to receive some

extra funding and extra training from Michaeljohn whilst we

research a new position for you.

Sick Pay

Arrangements for sick pay may vary from salon to salon. Please

check with your employer as to the normal arrangements. Self -

Certification Sickness Certificates and Fit notes will be required for

long periods of illness. It may be necessary to agree a break in

learning until you are well again. Unauthorised absence and constant

lateness may result in your losing pay or termination of employment.

You will be entitled to receive Statutory Sick Pay for periods of

illness of 4 days or more providing your average pay is at least £107

per week for the 8 weeks before your illness. If you have not been

in your job for 8 weeks then your employer will tell you your

entitlement. You can receive Statutory Sick Pay for a maximum of

28 weeks.

Assessment Procedure Observation

You will be assessed on a regular basis.

Training records will be issued to you. They

will be filled in by the Trainers/Assessors

for every piece of practical work you

produce. Successful completion of practical

work will be transferred to the City & Guilds

Assessment Record Book (sometimes called

log books or portfolios). You will be issued

with a leaver arch file stating your name,

level of course and Assessor. This file will

contain your training records. Each training

day these records will be filled in by your

Trainer/ Assessor - signed and dated. You

must then sign and date the records. The

records will show the progress that you are making.

At first your records will mainly contain details of the training that

you have received. As you progress your work will be assessed and

recorded into the City and Guilds assessment record book. You may

have your training record or log book open on the correct page and

placed at the unit you are working at. You may look at the

performance criteria (PC's) at any time during the session as this

will inform you of what you are being assessed against.

Your assessor will brief you before starting your practical task and

debrief you when completed. You will be informed of your strengths

and weaknesses and your records will be filled in. You must be

involved in this and feel comfortable to ask any questions.

An assessment plan will be filled in to inform you of what you are to

do at the next session. For example, unit H9/GH8 shampoo &

conditioner. H10/GH10 blow-dry short layered hair.

Your Assessor may ask you to answer some questions about the

practical work you are doing. These oral questions are called E3’s.

You must be made aware if you have been successful of meeting the

standards required after each training session, by your Assessor,

even if you are unsuccessful you must discuss with the Assessor:-

a) Areas for improvement

b) An action plan for further training and reassessment

Theory (background knowledge)

Background knowledge sessions

Theory work (background knowledge) relates to

the hair industry. It increases understanding

and adds to practical skill levels. Knowledge

gained this way will give you confidence and also

give you a professional edge when dealing with

clients or working within the salon. Learning

packs (packs containing subject and Key Skills

or Functional Skills information) will be issued to each learner for

certain aspects of theory.

It is important to keep a neat up to date theory file, which may be

called in for inspection at any time. Work missed MUST be copied

up. Please report to the theory trainer on any difficulties.

You will study a unit (section) e.g.

shampooing and after a revision period

depending upon which qualification you are

enrolled upon:-

a) sit a short written test (E4’s)

b) answer oral questions (E3’s)

** All learners will have the option to be assessed

online by multi choice questions. Where the correct

standards are not met, further attempts can be

made.**

c) To complete the framework you will also

undertake Functional Skills, These are

assessed by on line tests

If an area does not reach the standard, further

feedback will be given and reassessment arranged after any

additional training/practice has taken place.

Witness testimony (collecting work-based evidence)

You can collect witness testimonies when working in your salon to

help you progress. They need to be completed in full by yourself and

signed by your salon owner or client. This will provide evidence for

your file. Taking photographs of your work is another great way of

providing evidence for your file.

Block Work

Block work is an important aspect of training as it encourages

sectioning, sub-sectioning, handling hair, dexterity, winding

different techniques, speed and confidence.
