Harms of the Tongue❖ When Mawlud uses the word هذا he is referring to ‘this’ book, meaning his poem. The sentence is

aimed at raising the importance of the matter of the tongue

❖ He says that many things have come (written) regarding the tongue, and that the tongue has many harms associated with it

❖ In a hadith Prophet (SAW) said:

Will people not be thrown into the fire on their faces except (as a consequence of) what

their tongues have reaped (earned)

❖ In another hadith:

Indeed the servant will speak a word without thinking, and will reach the wrath of Allah in a

way he cannot imagine

Harms of the Tongue❖ Through these two hadith, and many more, the Prophet (SAW) had warned us of the harms

that can come to man.

❖ There are many other hadith too

❖ The tongue has tremendous ability. In a similar hadith we see the consequences of the tongue

❖ Indeed the servant will speak, and bring the happiness of Allah, and not think about it, he will raised levels by Allah. And indeed the servant will speak, and bring the wrath of Allah, and he will not think about it, and he will be dropped into the fire because of it

❖ It is for these harms that Mawlud wrote the book

Testimony of the Body Parts

❖ The body parts testify on the day of judgement

❖ Fussilat: 41: 19-23

❖ A note in the رواية ورش the first line is نحشر

Testimony of the Body Parts

❖ 17:36

❖ In summary the body parts are all amaana. The tongue is such a body part

❖ Certain body parts will testify for or against us on the day

❖ For this reason Mawlud writes this poem

Prophet (SAW) the believed and the one whose testimony is believed

❖ The word املوصوف means the described one. This is a reference to Prophet (SAW) who was described as being .(the believed one) املصدوق and (the truthful one) الصادق

❖ This is because in a hadith he is called the name الصادق and he is املصدوق because Allah attested to his truthfulness as did the prophets before him

❖ Mawlud mentions this because this is a book about the tongue and an encouragement to us to be الصادق and املصدوق

The one saved from the two evils❖ ‘

❖ “The one who is saved from the two evils” is a reference to a hadith that Prophet (SAW) said.

❖ In Al-Muwatta: (املوطاء)

❖ Whosoever Allah saved from two evils, he is gains/wins الجنة. What is between his jawbones and what is between his legs

❖ The fact that Allah grants this protection should also be a reminder as to how dependent we are on Allah to get mercy. We may control them, but the real protection is granted by Allah

❖ It should also be noted that the tongue is often coupled with the private parts. This should really remind us of the level of modesty one should have with his tongue

❖ is one the milestones works of Imam Malik. It is the earliest collection of hadith ever recorded. Was املوطاءdescribed by Imam Shafi’ as:

❖ ‘There is not on the face of the earth a book – after the Book of Allah – which is more authentic than the book of Malik’

Summary❖ Next week we will begin the rules of the tongue.

❖ It is important to note that although the rules are valuable, the fear and knowledge of the dangers of the tongue are almost enough to prevent you sinning with your tongue

❖ The notion once again is to be a ذاكر

❖ The دنيا causes a lot of the issues of our tongue. We should learn the reality of the دنيا and memorise the relevant ايات and احاديث.

❖ The Prophet (SAW) said:

❖ The example of the seeker of this Dunya is like the example of the one who drinks from the sea. Each time he increases his drink, each time he increases his thirst

The framework

• We should at minimum know to

separate the various pieces of the puzzle

• By restricting our limbs (eg: tongue) we are

forcing our hearts into being good

• By fasting and controlling our شهوات we can obtain control

our دنيا• By learning about the

realities of the دنيا we can control our شهوات
