Preface
The Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (MICAI) is a yearlyinternational conference series that has been organized by the Mexican Society forArtificial Intelligence (SMIA) since 2000. MICAI is a major international artificialintelligence (AI) forum and the main event in the academic life of the country’sgrowing AI community.
MICAI conferences publish high-quality papers in all areas of AI and its applica-tions. The proceedings of the previous MICAI events have been published by Springerin its Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series, vol. 1793, 2313, 2972,3789, 4293, 4827, 5317, 5845, 6437, 6438, 7094, 7095, 7629, 7630, 8265, 8266, 8856,8857, 9413, 9414, 10061, 10062, 10632, 10633, 11288, 11289, 11835, 12468 and12469. Since its foundation in 2000, the conference has been growing in popularity andimproving in quality.
The proceedings of MICAI 2021 are published in two volumes. The first volume,Advances in Computational Intelligence, contains 30 papers structured into threesections:
– Machine and Deep Learning– Image Processing and Pattern Recognition– Evolutionary and Metaheuristic Algorithms
The second volume, Advances in Soft Computing, contains 28 papers structuredinto two sections:
– Natural Language Processing– Intelligent Applications and Robotics
The two-volume set will be of interest for researchers in all fields of artificialintelligence, students specializing in related topics, and for the public in generalinterested in recent developments in AI.
The conference received for evaluation 129 submissions from authors in 22 coun-tries: Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica,Croatia, Cuba, the Czech Republic, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, the Netherlands,Peru, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the USA. From these submissions, 58papers were selected for publication in these two volumes after a peer-review processcarried out by the international Program Committee. The acceptance rate was 45%.
The international Program Committee consisted of 188 experts from 16 countries:Brazil, Colombia, France, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico,Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Spain, the UK, and the USA.
MICAI 2021 was honored by the presence of renowned experts who gave excellentkeynote lectures:
– Fabio A. González O., Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Colombia– Eyke Hüllermeier, Paderborn University, Germany
– Piero P. Bonissone, Piero P. Bosissone Analytics, USA– Marta R. Costa-Jussà, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain– Hugo Jair Escalante, National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics,
Mexico– María Vanina Martínez, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técni-
cas, Argentina
Five workshops were held jointly with the conference:
– SC-AIS 2021: International Workshop on Soft Computing and Advances inIntelligent Systems
– WILE 2021: 14th Workshop on Intelligent Learning Environments– HIS 2021: 14th Workshop of Hybrid Intelligent Systems– CIAPP 2021: 3rd Workshop on New Trends in Computational Intelligence and
Applications– WIDSSI 2021: 7th International Workshop on Intelligent Decision Support Systems
for Industry
The authors of the following papers received the Best Paper Awards based on thepaper's overall quality, significance, and originality of the reported results:
– First place: “Multi-objective Release Plan Rescheduling in Agile Software Devel-opment,” by Abel García Nájera, Saúl Zapotecas Martínez, Jesús Guillermo FalcónCardona, and Humberto Cervantes, Mexico
– Second place: “Deep Learning Approach for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis ofRestaurants Reviews in Spanish,” by Bella-Citlali Martínez-Seis, ObduliaPichardo-Lagunas, Sabino Miranda-Jiménez, Israel-Josafat Perez-Cazares, andJorge-Armando Rodriguez-González, Mexico
– Second place: “Question Answering for Visual Navigation in Human-centeredEnvironments,” by Daniil Kirilenko, Alexey Kovalev, Evgeny Osipov, andAleksandr Panov, Russia

– Third place: “Comparing Machine Learning based Segmentation Models on Jet FireRadiation Zones,” by Carmina Pérez, Adriana Palacios, Gilberto Ochoa-Ruiz,Christian Mata, Miguel Gonzalez-Mendoza, and Luis Eduardo Falcón-Morales,Mexico/Spain
We want to thank all the people involved in the organization of this conference: theauthors of the papers published in these two volumes – it is their research work thatgives value to the proceedings – and the organizers for their work. We thank thereviewers for their great effort spent on reviewing the submissions, the Track Chairs fortheir hard work, and the Program and Organizing Committee members.
We are deeply grateful to the Center for Computing Research at the InstitutoPolitécnico Nacional (Mexico) for their warm hospitality to MICAI 2021. We wouldlike to express our gratitude to the General Director, Arturo Reyes Sandoval, theSecretary of Research and Postgraduate Studies, Heberto Balmori Ramírez, the
