TRANSCRIPT

Slide 1

For your reflection

O Lord, our Lord, Your greatness is seen in all the world!

Your praise reaches up to the heavens; It is sung by children and babies.Your are safe and secure from all your enemies; You stop anyone who opposes you.

When I look at the sky, which You have made,At the moon and the stars, which you set in their places-what is man, that you think of him; mere man that you care for him?Yet you made him inferior only to Yourself, You crowned him with glory and honor. You appointed him ruler over everything You made; You placed him over all creation: sheep and cattle, and the wild animals too; the birds and the fish and the creatures of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord, Your greatness is seen in all the world!

Psalms 8:1-9

St. John Baptist De La Salle (Pray for Us.)Live Jesus in our Hearts. (Forever.)Geologyis the study of the earth, including the transformations it has undergone.involves a very broad area of study; (1) physical geology and (2) historical geology.

Significance of Studying Earth ScienceThe earth plays a vital role in todays constantly changing world. Most human activities are related to the natural surroundings, thus we need to study earth scienceTo have a better science background with relevant information about the environmentTo know the present characteristics as well as the history of the earthTo be aware of natural phenomena like tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, etc.To be prepared, informed, and make responsible decisions regarding environmental issues and problemsTo be updated with the latest development of the universe beyond earth.

The major areas have their own branches or specializations. Some of them are as follows:GeologyGeophysics (applies the physics concepts to study the earth)Geochemistry (applies chemistry to study the earth)Mineralogy (study of minerals)Petrology (study of rocks)Paleontology (study of fossils)MeteorologyClimatology (study of weather)AstronomyCosmology (study of the universe)

The solid part of the Earth, which includes soils, rocks and mineralsEarths surface processes (i.e. hydrologic cycle, mass wasting, erosion and weathering)Earths internal processes (i.e. tectonics and volcanism)Physical geology focuses on the following areas

Physical geology focuses on the following areasGeologic Time Scale - TerminologiesEON - Two or more geological eras form an Eon, which is the largest division of geologic time, lasting many hundreds of millions of years. ERA - Two or more geological periods comprise an era, which is hundreds of millions of years in duration.PERIOD - The period is the basic unit of geological time in which a single type of rock system is formed, lasting tens of millions of years.EPOCH - An epoch is a division of a geologic period; it is the smallest division of geologic time, lasting several million years.AGE - An age is a unit of geological time which is distinguished by some feature (like an Ice Age). An age is shorter than epoch, usually lasting from a few million years to about a hundred million years.

The first geologic time scale was proposed in 1913 by the British geologist Arthur Holmes (1890 - 1965). This was soon after the discovery of radioactivity and using it Holmes estimated that the Earth was about 4 billion years old - this was much greater than previously believed.
