Principalrsquos Message
Safety is a priority at Leduc Estates School and Black Gold Regional Schools
At the October School Council Meeting we reviewed how we are using Hour-
Zero protocols designed to ensure school safety Our staff participates in on-
going Hour-Zero training providing them the skill set and knowledge to respond
to any emergency situations at school Staff students and parents are re-
minded that if something around the school doesnrsquot seem right or safe to
please report it to the office
The Dare to Care Program Coordinator spent 2 days working with staff and
students creating a common language when dealing with bullying and other dan-
gerous behaviours The program is designed to assist schools in affirming a
positive climate and socially responsible individuals This feeling of safety not
only takes away the imbalance of power that is created when bullying exists it
creates a culture in which students are recognized for their caring behaviors
compassion and empathy Through grade appropriate assemblies and skills de-
velopment students were given the knowledge and tools to collectively make a
difference in their lives and in the lives of others
How quickly November has arrived November is the month set aside to re-
member those who fought for our freedom and those who continue to work to
keep our world safe We held our Remembrance Day service on November 5th
at 200 pm when we as a school remembered A special thank-you to Leduc
Royal Legion for sending members to speak at the ceremony
November brings us to our first formal reporting of student progress Report
cards will be issued on Monday November 30th and parent-teacher interviews
will be held on December 2nd amp 3rd We hope to see you there

Extended Absences
Many parents are concerned when their child misses school due to
prolonged illness andor family vacations Many of the classroom ac-
tivities that students are engaged in on a regular basis involve discus-
sion or group activities that are hard to replicate for homework
Please note that family holidays are not excused absences and parents are responsible for ensur-
ing that students have access to educational activities Teachers will provide general guidelines
for parents that deal with the topic under study It is not possible to provide detailed homework
for each student across each subject area
During these occasions we recommend that parents have their child read on a regular basis keep
a journal to promote writing skills practice math concepts etc through games and computer as-
sisted activities Parents are also encouraged to access curriculum information and related com-
puter activities through the BGRS website httpengagingstudentsblackgoldca
In terms of assessment our teachers will work with parents to ensure that students have an op-
portunity to demonstrate their understanding of concepts in a timely fashion upon their return
