SUSTAINABLE SITES

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

This prerequisite is intended to limit the amount of erosion, dust andwater sedimentation created by construction activities.

SUSTAINABLE SITES

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

During construction, there can be a lot of pollution going on,

especially when it rains. Pollution on construction sites can be

reduced by controlling:

Soil Erosion  Airborne Dust Generation

Waterway Sedimentation

Implementation

SUSTAINABLE SITES

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

Provide ESC (Erosion and Sedimentation Control) plan withconstruction documents and specifications.

Goal is to prevent the loss of soil, pollution, and

sedimentation.

Follow the EPA 2003 (Environmental Protection Agency)standards.

CGP (Construction General Permit) outlines how to

comply with NPDES program. CGP covers sites greater

than 1 acre, but LEED covers all.

Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

Ways to control sedimentation:

Stabilization: i.e. seeding and mulching

Structural: i.e. silt fences, earth dikes, sediment traps

Forbidden Sites:

Below 5ft. above the 100 year flood elevation as defined by FEMA

Within 100ft. of Wetlands as defined by CFR (Code of Federal

Regulations)

Prime farmland as defined by USDA

Within 50ft. of a water body (lakes, seas, rivers, etc.) Comply with

Clean Water Act.

SUSTAINABLE SITES

Credit 1: Site Selection (1pt)

Forbidden Sites:

Anything less than 5ft. above the 100 year flood elevation as

defined by FEMA

What this means: A site plan must be submitted that shows that you are at

least 5¶ above the 100 year flood line if either of those lines cross the site. If

neither line crosses the site, indicate the nearest USGS elevation contour

line.

Credit 5.1: Site Development: Protect or Restore Habitat (1pt)

Promote biodiversity by conserving existing natural areas and or restoring damaged areas.

These practices involve

protecting greenfield sites,

restoring previouslydeveloped sites including

the possible use of a

vegetated roof.

Credit 6.1: Storm Water Design: Quantity Control (1pt)

The intent of this credit is to limit the disruption of the natural hydrology.

CASE 1: Existing imperviousness less than or equal to 50%

CASE 2: Existing imperviousness that is greater than 50%

* To earn this credit with previously undeveloped sites, you¶ll need to avoid any

increase in runoff, while on mostly impervious developed sites, you¶ll need to

reduce runoff.

Credit 6.2: Storm Water Design: Quality Control (1pt)

Reduce or eliminate water pollution by reducing the amount of impervious cover on a site.

In order to get awarded a point for this credit, there must be a stormwater

managament plan that reduces impervious cover and treats the stormwater runoff

from 90% of the average annual rainfall using acceptable best managementpractices (BPMs).
