Piney Woods Cruise

to Jefferson, Texas & Caddo Lake-April 6-8, 2012

The next CLoT overnight cruise is to Jefferson and Caddo Lake in East Texas. We will be leaving the Dallas area early the morning of Friday, April 6 and returning Sunday April 8. A specific meeting place and time will be announced at a later date. You can always expect to have a great time when the Tichy’s plan an out-of-town trip. The 15 rooms in the historic Excelsior House Hotel, www.theexcelsiorhouse.com, have been blocked for our Legends members. As of December 20 only three rooms remain for those who plan on joining the cruise. Call the hotel (903) 665-2513 and reserve your room, if

you plan on joining us for the trip.

History Jefferson is located in the Big Cypress Bayou of the Piney Woods. It was a busy steamboat port on the Cypress River until the 1870s and was often described as the “Riverport to the Southwest”. Riverboats came up the Mississippi River into the Red River, through Caddo Lake, and up Big Cypress to what was known as the Turning Basin where the riverboats loaded and unloaded. Jefferson was important to the Confederacy providing meat, iron, munitions, and leather goods. Caddo Lake is the largest natural lake of fresh water in the south covering about 25,000 acres. The acreage can fluctuate to over 35,000 acres at times of high water levels. Half of the lake is in Texas and half in Louisiana. The lake is surrounded by cypress trees often full of gray Spanish moss. The lake was the site of the na-tion’s first “offshore” oil production. In 1911 a well was punched through the bottom of Caddo Lake and pro-duced more than 400 barrels a day. The Caddo Lake of the 1800s was much larger and deeper than today’s lake the result of a massive log jam on the Red River. After the log jam was destroyed and before a dam was built on the lake the area enjoyed another brief economic boom the result of finding natural pearls in the lake.

What we can plan to do---We will tour Caddo Lake on the Graceful Ghost a wood

burning steamboat provided the water levels rise.---The historic old Old Town of Jefferson has a variety of an-

tique shops and is within one block of the Excelsior Hotel.---The Jefferson Historical Museum is adjacent to the hotel.---There is a small car museum which should be open during

our visit.---We will have a fixed-price dinner at the Stillwater Inn,

called the best restaurant in town.---I’ve met with the Jefferson Police Chief, who owns three

Vettes, to plan several short cruises. ---If time permits, we may include Jonesville, TX on one of

the cruises to visit the T.C. Lindsey & Co. General Store. A general store has operated continuously at this site since 1847.

---Another option to tour the historic areas of town is a horse drawn wagon, which we will consider once a par-ticipant list is complete.

---For those who are interested, we can arrange for several historic home house tours.

---If there’s enough interest, we can arrange a tour at the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore on Sunday’s return trip.

If the Excelsior House fills up, you can book your room across the street at the historic Jefferson Hotel, 124 W. Austin St, Jefferson, TX 75657, (903) 665-2631.

Or at one of the many other B&Bs in Jefferson.Contact Bill Tichy at (972) 650-8007 or [email protected], if you have any questions.

by Diane Preston As most of you know, we drive our old cars on trips a lot. In recent years we’ve experienced more and more problems on the road due to the addition of Ethanol into the gasoline. We got our first tank of Ethanol gas in 2004 when we were driving across Nebraska. It cleaned out our old fuel line and dumped a bucket load of built up sediment into our new Edelbrock carburetor (requiring a rebuild on the Nebraska/Wyoming border in a thun-der storm and a new carburetor in Park City, Utah). More recently, our Classic Chevy friends in Branson, Missouri helped clean out black yucky muck from our THIRD Edelbrock carburetor that had built up over the last several years. (Missouri has 15% Ethanol!) Since we travel mostly in the sum-mer, we also are encountering vapor lock problems. Once our gas tank is much below half full it boils. if the temperature is above 100 degrees and causes the vapor lock and terrible performance. Struggling back to Texas from Michigan this summer we had to stop about every 100 miles to add cool fuel to the tank AND we were using an $8 bottle of SeaFoam additive in every full tank... adding considerably to the price of a fill up. On a recent trip to Oklahoma in the 56 Nomad I got to wondering how to find good gas while traveling. So I googled ethanol-free gas on my iPhone and came up with this web site!! We drove up and back without ANY corn additive in the tank and the car ran GREAT! Unfortunately, you will notice that there are VERY few of these stations identified for Texas... hopefully it’s just because people haven’t posted many locations for Texas yet.

Be sure to add any locations you know about, so we can get 100% gas in Texas!

Canada that serve ethanol-free gasoline.

Here’s some information from the site:

pure-gas.org is a web site dedicated to one, simple task: to list the gas stations in the U.S. and Canada that serve ethanol-free gasoline. Many cars, motor-cycles, boats, aircraft and tools have engines that run worse, or have parts that deteriorate, when run on gasoline that contains ethanol. In addition, etha-nol leaves residue on valves and other parts that can hinder performance. Upload a station! This site started in the summer of 2009, and always needs more station uploads! Please enter ethanol-free stations that you know about. Take a look at the update chart to see how many stations have been added (and removed) per month since this site started. Download a POI file!If you’ve got a GPS navigator, chances are you can load a CSV POI file into it. Download the POI CVS file and give it a try! Download a KML file!Or, if you like to play with Google Earth or other apps that use KML files, download the KML file. Aren’t certain brands ethanol-free?No. All gasoline brands have both pure and ethanol-containing gasoline under the same brand names. For example, Shell V-Power ranges from 91 to 93 octane both with and without added ethanol. It just varies from station to station, and it’s up to the sta-tion owner whether or not to sell pure gas. In fact, in Madison, Wisconsin there is a Shell station that sells V-Power with ethanol, but added a single pump, at a higher price, dispensing pure 91-octane gas. (It happens to be the pump that I always use, so I figure they understood I wanted pure gas in that one.) How do I know if a gas and grade is ethanol-free?In most states, stations are required to label the pumps, if they contain ethanol over a certain per-centage, which varies by state but is usually 1 percent. A few states have no labeling requirement, and you just have to ask someone at the station who knows what goes in the tanks. State-by-state label-ing requirements are listed at fuel-testers.com. Can I test the gas myself for ethanol?Yes, and it’s quite easy to do. Inexpensive fuel-testing kits are widely available, or you can just do it yourself: (1) pour a small amount of water into a nar-row jar (an olive jar works great) and mark the water

level with a Sharpie; (2) add the fuel to around a 10:1 fuel:water ratio; (3) shake well, let settle for a few minutes; (4) see if the water level has risen above the mark. If it has risen, it has combined with ethanol from the fuel. But isn’t pure gas more expensive? It can be, often due to federal and state tax incen-tives. We buy it because we want to fuel our vehicles with it. If you want to save money on gas, this site is of no use to you - it will NOT have gasoline prices on it. They vary from day to day and this site isn’t about saving money. It’s about finding pure gasoline for your machine. Why does pure gas give better mileage?Pure gas gives better mileage than E10, and much better than E85, simply because gasoline has higher free energy than ethanol. The free energy of gasoline is 34.2 MJ per liter. The free energy of ethanol is 24 MJ per liter. That means E10 (10% ethanol) has a free energy of 33.2 MJ per liter, and E85 (85% etha-nol) has a free energy of 25.6 MJ per liter. As a result, your mileage is reduced by 3% with E10 over pure gas, and 25% with E85 over pure gas, all else be-ing equal. Mileage can be reduced even more if your engine doesn’t run as well on E10, which is often the case. What about ethanol politics? This site doesn’t get into the political side of ethanol in gasoline, other than in the Comments section, where folks are free to espouse their opinions, post URLs to sites they care about, etc. Remember, this site has one, simple purpose: to list the stations that sell ethanol-free gasoline in the U.S. and Canada. Period. With that said, a good starting point for the anti-ethanol campaign in the U.S. is Dean Billings’ site e0pc.com, an authoritative reference on ethanol legislation at the federal and state levels. Dean keeps up on the issues and shares his knowledge with us and comments regularly here. Check his site out! Who runs this site?Sam Hokin is a BMW motorcycle rider, programmer, math and physics teacher, and co-owner of IMS, an Internet application company in Madison, Wisconsin. After searching around, he came to the conclusion that a site like this doesn’t exist, and it should. Since he can write and host web sites for very little cash cost, he started one. If you’d like to contact him, send him an email: [email protected].

Legends Sunday Brunch We tried out a new site for our monthly Sunday brunch November 20th. About 20 Legends members came to Jake’s Burgers, 5505 Belt Line Road, Ad-dison. It is located West of Preston Road and East of Dallas North Toll Road. December brunch was also at Jake’s. Anyone who wants to have brunch with Legends members check your e-mails for the date and location of each month’s Sunday brunch.
