EVP 500 is intended for houses/properties withwaterborne heating. A climate controlled automatic bypass ensures that the indoor module is always working asefficiently as possible.

System description

Principle of operation

EVP 500 is an indoor module designed for houses/smallerproperties with waterborne heating. The indoor moduleconsists of a pressure vessel, two immersion heater, chargepump as well s intelligent control and is suitable for dockingwith NIBE's air/water heat pumps.

Hot water heating occurs via a cam pipe coil. The low internalvolume and high circulation rate of the water in the coilprevents bacterial growth. In the event of a domestic waterflow greater than 12 l/min, supplementing with a core waterheater is recommended.

The immersion heaters have a max output of 18 kW withop-tion of setting lower outputs. The supplied output is 9 kW.

The indoor module and heat pump work optimally towardsa heat distribution system of up to 55/45 °C at dimensionedoutdoor temperature. At higher flow line temperatures(maximum 65 °C) heat pump operation can be limited. If theheat pump operation is limited the installation only workswith the addition. The heat pump starts when temperaturespermit operation again. For further information about systemlimitation, see the heat pump manual.

The total boiler water volume is 500 litres.

The supply temperature is determined by the current outdoortemperature and selected settings.

Room temperature

Heating control system

The indoor temperature depends on several factors. Duringthe hot season, solar radiation and heat given off by peopleand equipment are sufficient to keep the house warm.

When it gets colder outside, the heating system must bestarted. The colder its gets, the hotter the radiators must be.

This adjustment is made automatically, however the basicsettings must first be made on the indoor module, see thesection “Default setting” on page 6.

NOTEWait one day between settings so that the temperat-

ures have time to stabilise.

Default setting

For optimum operational economy, make settings first onthe indoor module with any room thermostats fully open.When the correct "Heating curve selection" and "Offset,heat curve" have been selected, the thermostats can becontrolled to compensate for solar radiation etc.

For basic setting, use the knob "Option, heating curve"

and the knob "Offset heating curve".

If the required room temperature is not obtained, readjust-ment may be necessary.

Readjustment the default settings

Cold weather conditions

If the room temperature is too low, increase the heatingcurve offset setting by one step.

If the room temperature is too high, reduce the “Option,heating curve” setting by one step.

Warm weather conditions

If the room temperature is too low, increase the heatingcurve offset setting by one step.

If the room temperature is too high, reduce the "Heatingcurve offset" setting by one step.

Changing the room temperature manually

If you want to temporarily or permanently lower or raise theindoor temperature relative to the previously set temperature,

turn the "Heating curve offset" knob anticlockwise orclockwise. One line approximately represents a 1 degreechange in room temperature.

NOTE: An increase in the room temperature may be limitedby the radiator or underfloor heating thermostats, if so thesemust be turned up.

Hot water temp.Upon delivery, the indoor module is set to normal mode on

the knob and 60 °C on the knob . This usually givesa good combination of optimal savings and comfort. To in-crease the hot water capacity (the comfort):

In cold weather

Turn the knobs and one step clockwise.

In hot weather

Turn the knob, one step clockwise.

If the hot water capacity is sufficient, both knobs and

can be turned one step counterclockwise. This results inless comfort but greater savings.

Checking the safety valves

EVP 500 ,must be provided with two safety valves when in-stalled; one for the heating system and one for the waterheater.

The heating system’s safety valve must be completely tight,but the water heater’s safety valve may occasionally releasesome water after hot water has been used. This is becausethe cold water, which enters the water heater to replace thehot water, expands when heated causing the pressure torise and the safety valve to open.

The safety valves must be checked regularly. Check as fol-lows:

Open the valve.

Check that water flows through the valve.

Close the valve again.

Check the pressure. If the pressure is too low, top up theboiler water.

NOTEIn the event of a domestic water flow greater than 12l/min, it is recommended to supplement with a core

water heater.

General information for the installer

Transport and storage

The inside module should be transported and stored verticallyin a dry place. If the inside module has to be transportedhorizontally, this should be done with care.

Assembly

The indoor module is ideally located in a utility room orboiler room. The unit can be aligned using the adjustablefeet.

The inside module's factory-fitted lifting eye can be removedafter installation and the insulation plug enclosed is pressedinto place in order to reduce heat losses.

If pipes are to be routed on an internal wall that backs onto a bedroom or living room, this must take place withoutclamping.

Inspection of the installation

Current regulations require the system to be inspected beforeit is commissioned. The inspection must be carried out by asuitably qualified person and should be documented. Theabove applies to closed heating systems. Therefore, theboiler must not be replaced without reinspection.

Connection

Pipe installation must take place in accordance with applic-able heating and hot water standards. Internal supportbushes should be fitted when an annealed copper or steelpipe is used.

Overflow pipes from safety valves must be passed to floordrains so that hot water cannot splash when the valves haveto checked or the indoor module vented. The overflow pipemust be routed enclosed along its entire length to preventwater pockets and be frost proof. The outlet of the pipe mustbe clearly visible.

The hot water circuit must be provided with a mixing valveas the boiler temperature can exceed 60 °C and there is arisk of scalding.

EVP 500 can be connected to both an open and a closedexpansion tank.

If the heating system is provided with an open expansiontank, the distance between the highest radiator and the ex-pansion tank must be no less than 2.5 m.

Extra electric hot water heater

The facility should be supplemented with an electric waterheater, if a hot tub or other significant consumer of hotwater is installed.

If the heater is equipped with a valve connector Ø 15 mmthis should be replaced with a corresponding one (separable)Ø 22 mm.

Appropriate heater is COMPACT 100-300 for floor mountingand EMINENT 35-100 for wall mounting.

1. Separate the valve connector.

2. Install the valve connector part on incoming cold waterto the heater.

3. Install the mixing valve part on outgoing hot water fromthe heater.

4. Plug the part on the valve connector part.

The front panel folds down by undoing the two screws atthe top of the panel. The panel can then be folded downinto a horizontal position (against stop lugs on either side ofthe front panel).

Strain relief device

When connecting an electrical output greater than 9 kW,the strain relief device for the supply cable needs to be re-placed with an enclosed strain relief device. For cables up to2.5 mm2, the small one can ideally the factory fitted strainrelief device be used. The one included is fitted for thickercables.

Connection

Disconnect the indoor module before insulation testing thehouse wiring.

EVP 500 must be installed via an isolator switch with a min-imum breaking gap of 3 mm. When the building is equippedwith an earth-fault breaker, EVP 500 should be equippedwith a separate one. Remove the upper cover. The connectioncable must be connected to the terminal block (X9) accordingto the terminal block's markings and installed in one of thestrain reliefs for the cable.

NOTEElectrical installation and service must be carried outunder the supervision of a qualified electrician. Electric-al installation and wiring must be carried out in accord-

ance with the stipulations in force.

NOTEThe switch (8) must not be moved from "0" until theboiler has been filled with water. Otherwise the tem-perature limiter, thermostat and immersion heater may

be damaged.

Internal fuse protection

Automatic elements, charge pump (17) and its cabling arefuse-protected internally with a miniature circuit breaker (7),plus a fine-wire fuse (33) on the relay card (34).

Resetting the temperature limiter

The temperature limiters (6) 1 and 2 interrupt the powersupply to the immersion heaters and the boiler temperatureis between 90 °C and 100 °C, these can be reset by pressingthe button on the relevant temperature sensor.

The temperature limiters (6) 1 and 2 can be accessed behindthe lower cover, where they are positioned on top of thepanel. These can be reset by pressing the buttons on the re-spective temperature limiters.

NOTEReset the temperature limiters, they may have tripped

during transport.

Connecting the outside sensor

The outside sensor (15) must be installed in a shaded locationon a wall facing north or north-west, where it will not beaffected by the morning sun, for example. This sensor isconnected by twin cables to terminal (X12), positions "7"and "8". The minimum cable cross section should be 0.4mm2

up to lengths of 50 metres, for example, EKKX or LiYY.

Input for external power monitor

The indoor module EVP 500 is provided with a control inputfor an external output monitor. The output (potential free)of the external output monitor is connected to terminal (X12),positions "5" and "6". If positions "5" and "6" are closed,any connected electrical steps are gradually disconnected at10 second intervals until the current does not exceed thepermissible value. Reconnection of the additional electricitythen occurs automatically.

Centralised load control/Tariff

If tariff control is use, it can be connected to terminal (X12).If positions ”1” and ”2” are closed, all electric addition willbe blocked. If positions ”3” and ”4” are closed, heat pumpoperation will be blocked. However, this assumes that thedocked heat pump is F20XX.

Quick start boiler mode

During normal operation, it takes one hour from boiler oper-ation activation until the first electrical step cuts in, and thenone hour between each electrical step.

To shorten the time until the first electrical step cuts in, it ispossible to quick start EVP 500 by:

1. Bridge both tariff A (electrical tariff) and tariff B (com-pressor tariff), terminal block X12 terminal 1 and 2 aswell as 3 and 4.

2. Remove tariff A terminals 1 and 2.

This means that the first electrical step cuts in after only5 seconds.

3. When the first electrical step is activated, tariff B, termin-al block 12, terminals 3 and 4 are also removed to allowthe compressor in the heat pump to produce heat.

Blocking room heating during tariff control

The supplied bridge is used to save the stored heat energyin EVP 500 for hot water production, when both tariff A andB are activated.

Connect the bridge on the microprocessor board (41), ter-minal block X3 between terminals 31 and 32. With the bridgeinstalled, the shunt valve closes completely as tariffs A andB are activated at the same time. This means that no heat isretrieved from EVP 500.

During the time that tariff A and B are activated, no new hotwater is produced, only access to existing hot water is avail-able EVP 500.

Input for external charge pump feed

If EVP 500 does not have to be docked with F20XX but withsome other external heat source, the charge pump can stillbe used. This is achieved by manually supplying the chargepump externally via terminal (X10) positions ”1” and ”2” inaccordance with the required operating conditions. In addi-tion, the connector (13) must be moved from an internalsocket to an external one as shown in the diagram below.

External additional relay

When EVP 500 is to be docked to an external heat sourcedesigned to replace the additional heater, terminal (X11)may be used to control switching this on and off. When theadditional heater is to be activated, contact is achievedbetween terminal (X11) position "1" and position "3". Thiscontact is potential free and activated according to the sameconditions as the additional heater.

General

EVP 500 can be installed in a number of different ways. For all docking options, the necessary safety equipment must be fittedin accordance with applicable rules. EVP 500 must be docked to an outdoor air heat pump with a maximum output of 15 kW.

Pipe connection to NIBE FIGHTER outdoor air heat pump

Connect the heat pump's supply (70) to the EVP's "Supply HP." (76). The heat pump's return line (71) must be connected tothe EVP's "Return line HP" (75). The heat pump's supplied particle filter must be installed on the heat pump's return line.

Extra docking connections

Route any pipes from the docked option that are to be con-nected to the docking terminal on EVP through the under-neath of the front cover. Cut the plastic cover according tothe punched pattern.

Electric boiler mode

If EVP 500 is to be used without a heat pump, e.g. if a faulthas occurred in the heat pump or if the heat pump has notyet been installed, a jumper must be placed between posi-tions ”3” and ”4” on terminal (X12). This stops the boilersignalling a communications alarm when communicationwith F20XX is not found. EVP 500 then functions as a purelyelectric boiler with automatic heating controls, althoughwithout freeze protection.

Electrical connection

When connecting an air/water heat pump other than F20XX,it will not be possible to utilise parts of the intelligence in thecontrols of EVP 500.

It is best to place a suitable thermostat which operates theheat pump's on and off control in the EVP 500´s submersibletube to the heat pump sensor. To use the integral chargepump, an external supply is required at terminal (X10), posi-tions ”1” and ”2” according to the operating conditionsrequired (e.g. frost protection circulation). In addition, theconnector (13) must be moved from an internal socket to anexternal one. The electric boiler temperature is set using the

knob to a suitable temperature (lowest reference valuesupply line at DOT). Place a jumper between positions ”3”and ”4” on terminal (X12). This ensures that the boiler doesnot signal a communications alarm when communicationwith F20XX is not found.

There are three options for blocking immersion heater oper-ation as the heat pump alone is able to cover the heatingrequirements in the building. It is most appropriate to use arelay which bridges positions "1" and "2", i.e. the tariffelectricity supplement is activated when the heat pump hasfull coverage, output-wise.

The other alternative is to manually block the additionalheater, as the heat pump alone is able to meet the heat re-

quirements by setting the change-over switch on thecontrol panel to "OFF". When the heat requirement is thennot met by the heat pump alone, the change-over switch isset back to "ON".

The third alternative is to set potentiometer (61) to 0 kW.

The heat from the solar panels is transferred to EVP 500 viaa plate heat exchanger, which is connected to EVP 500'sextra docking connections (77) and (78). A temperaturesensor from the solar heating systems control box is locatedin "submerged tube extra docking connection" (86).

A non-return valve with opening pressure is installed on theindoor module’s side of the plate heat exchanger, to preventself-circulation.

The accumulator tank's pipe connections are connected toEVP 500's extra docking connections (77) and (78).

The charge pump to the multi-fuel heating boiler is suppliedvia an appropriate thermostat. A non-return valve withopening pressure is fitted so as to prevent self-circulation.

The thermostat that is to be installed in the accumulator tankto start heating EVP 500, should have a starting temperatureof approx. 55-60 °C. A thermal mixing valve. e.g. Laddomattype N, is installed to limit the incoming temperature for EVP500 to 65 °C. This is to prevent HP alarms at F20XX whenits frost protection circulation is activated.

NOTEThe charge circuits between EVP 500 and the accumu-lator tank must be supplied with thermal mixing valves

(max 65 °C).

The accumulator tank's pipe connections are connected toEVP 500's extra docking connections (75) and (76). Totransfer heat from the accumulator tank to EVP 500, the in-door module's internal charge pump is used.

The charge pump is controlled by an appropriate thermostatlocated in the accumulator tank and supplied via terminalblock (X10) terminal ”1” and ”2”.

In addition, connector (13) must be reconnected externallyfrom internally.

A non-return valve with opening pressure are fitted to boththe circuit for the wood boiler and the sun circuit in orderto prevent self-circulation.

Twin thermometers that are to be installed in the accumulatortank must cut EVP 500 charging at max 85 °C and a suitablestart temperature should be approx. 60 °C.

Preparations

Check that the switch (8) is set to "ON" and that the temper-ature limiters (6) have not tripped (press the button hard toreset).

Addition

It is best to top up the indoor module by means of a fixedfiller pipe to the radiator return.

Venting the heating systemBleed the indoor module via the bleeder nipple (81) andthe rest of the heating system through the relevantventing valves.

Keep topping up and venting until all air has been re-moved and the pressure is correct.

Start-up and inspection1. Check that the water is full and vented.

2. Turn on the main circuit breaker.

3. Check that all incoming phases are powered.

4. Check that the miniature circuit-breaker (7) is on.

5. Check that the temperature limiters (6) have not trippedduring transit.

6. Turn on the switch (8).

7. Adjust the curve coefficient and heating curve offsetaccording to the requirements of the property using the

knobs and .

8. If F20XX is not to be connected, bridge positions ”3”and ”4” on terminal (X12).

Continue with the following points if EVP 500 is to be dockedto NIBE's air/water heat pump.

1. Connect a shielded communications cable betweenF20XX and EVP 500 as per "Communication betweenEVP 500 and F20XX" on page 16.

2. Follow the start-up and inspection instruction for therespective heat pumps.

3. Check that the value is ”1” in channel A1 inF2020/F2025 (in F2005/2010 channel 13 must be set to2).

4. Set the heating system's balance temperature (accordingto dimensioning) in channel A5 in F2020/F2025 orchannel 17 in F2005/F2010.

5. Adjust the charge flow between the heat pump and EVP500 using the mode switch on the charge pump.

Guideline value balance temperature

The table applies at DOT and with an approximate hot water demand of 5000 kWh/year and a heat distribution system with amaximum supply/return temperature of 55/45 °C. Where the table only contains guideline values, it is important that the heatingsystem's balance temperature is dimensioned, preferably with the dimensioning tool VPDIM.

Setting of temperature levels

The indoor module and, indirectly also the cam pipe coil, is,on delivery, set to normal stop temperature ”NORM” for the

heat pump and 60 °C electric boiler temperature .All additional power is blocked until the heat pump can nolonger manage the entire heating demand itself (below thebalance temperature).

This means that the electric boiler temperature is significantonly below the heat pump's balance temperature. In the caseof outdoor temperatures above the balance temperature,the heat pump's stop temperature is thus controlled and so

all the comfort of hot water is controlled via the knob .

The heat pump's stop temperature is variable and dependson the knob setting and outdoor temperature. At a higheroutdoor temperature, the heat pump does not need to workas hard to get up to boiler temperature as it does when theoutdoor temperature is colder, so increasing savings (see thediagram below).

The temperature in the cam pipe coil increases as the boilertemperature increases. The output hot water temperaturecan be limited by means of a mixer valve (not included asstandard).

The maximum supply temperature can also be limited up-wards in temperature (35 °C - 65 °C) to protect an underfloorheating system for example. This is done via a potentiometer(62) on circuit board (34), which is located behind the frontpanel.

The indoor module's maximum power output is also set onthe same circuit board (34) via potentiometer (61) and canbe adjusted between 0-18 kW in stages of 3 kW. The powerstages are connected, if necessary, at hourly intervals, on thecondition that "Operating mode, immersion heater " is onposition "on". The connection difference between start/stoptemperature is set using potentiometer (60). At outdoortemperatures above 10 °C, boiler control is automatically setto 1 °C on the connection difference's setting to extend theheat pump's operating time when the given output is high.

Adjustment, charge flow F20XX

Adjusting the temperature difference ( T) between the heatpump's supply temperature and the heat pump's returntemperature is important to maintain optimal operationaleconomy.

This is most easily done using the temperatures measured inchannel T2 (supply temperature) and channel T3 (returntemperature). This temperature difference ( T) is adjustedusing the charge pump. Adjustment is performed with stableoperation about 5 minutes after start, or about 5 minutesafter defrosting in cold outdoor temperatures.

NOTEThe temperature difference must be within the greymarked area in the diagram below. Adjust as close to

the nominal value as possible.

Air is initially released from the hot water and venting maybe necessary. If bubbling sounds can be heard from the in-door module, the entire system requires further venting.When the system is stable (correct pressure and all air elim-inated) the automatic heating control system can be set asrequired. See the sections "Heating control system" on page6 and "Functions on the front panel" on page 4.

Draining the heating system

The power supply must be disconnected before the boiler/ra-diator water is drained.

The boiler/radiator water can be drained via drain valve (44).Loosen the cover of the drain valve and mount the suppliedhose connector to an appropriate hose.

NOTEThe hose must be fitted to the hose coupling suppliedbefore being fitted to the drain valve (44). The valveopens automatically when the hose coupling is fitted

to the valve.

Setting after diagram

EVP 500 is equipped with an outdoor temperature controlledheating control system. This means the flow temperature isregulated in relation to the current outdoor temperature.The relationship between outdoor temperature and supplytemperature is set with the “Heating curve selection” and“Heating curve offset” knobs.

The diagram is based on the dimensioned outdoor temperat-ure in the area and the dimensioned flow temperature ofthe heating system. When these two values “meet”, theheating control's curve coefficient can be read. The “Heatingcurve offset” knob is then set. A suitable value for underfloorheating is -1 and for a radiator system -2.

As hot water is heated in the cam pipe coil at the same timeas it is used, the hot water volume is dependent on the flowthrough the coil. This means that a larger quantity of hotwater can be taken at a lower flow. If large hot water flowsare required, the boiler temperature may be increased using

the knobs and as per section "Hot water temperat-ure" on page 7. The available hot water volume can beseen in the diagram.

In the event of a hot water flow greater than 12 l/min, it isrecommended to supplement with a core water heater.

Dealing with malfunctions

In the event of malfunction or operating disturbances first check the points below. Remember that there is an hourinterval between each power stage.

Low hot water temperature or no hot waterToo high domestic water flow. See section Hot watertemp. on page 7.

Large amounts of hot water were used.

Circuit or main MCB tripped.

Possible earth circuit-breaker tripped.

Electric boiler operation due to blocked heatpump

The heat pump may be blocked due to a high supply or re-turn temperature, which can depend on incorrect heat pumpand/or indoor module settings. When the heat pump isblocked, this is indicated by three flashes on the operatingmode indicator on EVP 500.

1. Set the heating system's balance temperature in F20XX.

2. The charge flow between supply and return to the heatpump (T2 - T3) must be according to the diagram onpage 24.

3. A high set value on the heat curve results in a high supplytemperature, which in turn, results in a high returntemperature. The heat pump is then outside its workingrange.

4. The flow in the heating system is limited by the thermo-stats for the radiators or underfloor heating. Instead,regulate the room temperature using "Heating curveselection" and "Offset, heat curve" on EVP 500 (seepage 6).

5. Check that "temperature sensor, heat pump" (89) iscorrectly installed in the submerged tube on EVP 500.

6. Adjust T above the heating system using the heatingmedium pump or any external valves according to theprojected flow for the house.

7. In the event of docking to another heat source, thecharge temperature should be limited to 55-60 °C.

8. The heat pump's output can be limited by the heatingsystem.

Switch position

In "Reserve mode", the indoor module's electroniccontrol is disconnected.

The immersion heater is controlled by a separate thermostat(3), and the available output in reserve mode is 9 kW.

The charge pump is functional, but the automatic heatingcontrol system is not, so manual shunt operation is required.This is done by using a screwdriver to set the change-over

switch on the shunt motor (19) in mode . The shuntmotor can then be turned to the desired position.

Resetting the miniature circuit breakers

The MCB (7) is accessible behind the cover and is located tothe left of the panel. Normal mode of the miniature circuit-breaker is "1" (up).

Alarm

In the event of a communications error between EVP 500and F20XX, the red LED (31) flashes. This malfunction willbe noted as EVP 500 then switches to alarm operation if theoutdoor temperature is lower than +5 °C. This means 35 °Cboiler temperature and 15 °C reference temperature at theflow line.

At higher outdoor temperatures, only the reference valueon the flow line is set to +15 °C.

In the event of an internal sensor error or a constant F20XXalarm, the red LED (31) lights continuously. This malfunctionwill be noted as EVP 500 then automatically switches to alarmoperation (described above).

Fine wire fuse

Automatic elements, charge pump (17) and its cabling arefuse-protected internally with a miniature circuit breaker (7),plus a fine-wire fuse (33) on the relay card (34). The fine-wirefuse may be replaced only once the fault has been rectified.Fine-wire fuse 2 AT, 5 x 20 mm. A defective fine-wire fuseis indicated by the operating mode indicator being off whenthe switch is set to 1.
