Dear Parishioners,
We are told today in our Gospel reading from Matthew that we are to be
“the salt of the earth” and that we must be “the light of the world” (5:13-
14). Our first reading from Isaiah informs us that we must be generous
people and share with those who are in need. Isaiah is telling us to share
the necessities in life with those who are less fortunate than we are. When
you help people, who are in need or depressed, you become a light to
them. You are the sunlight that is breaking forth at dawn. Then Isaiah
changes the subject, somewhat; he changes from sharing our goods to removing bad attitudes. We are
told to remove oppression, false accusations and malicious speech. These are evils that destroy friend-
ships, destroy trust, destroy harmony and bring about discord. They can destroy people’s senses of
self-worth. Removing these evils is just as important as feeding the hungry or providing someone a
coat.
In Matthew’s Gospel, both metaphors of salt and light are used. In the days of Matthew, salt was a
very expensive item, unlike today. Because of the lack of refrigeration, salt was used as a preservative.
Salt was also used in many religious practices. We see it used in ancient Egyptian burial customs. In
the Old Testament, it is used to legally bind covenants and sacrifices offered at the altar. Even today
there is an option in the right of blessing holy water that includes adding a little salt. There is a special
prayer for this practice.
When Jesus asks us to become “the salt of the earth,” he is inviting us to consider becoming disciples
and proclaiming the Kingdom of God in word and deed. In this way, we become a preservative that
keeps the world from spoiling. Matthew is also saying that if we proclaim the Good News of the Gos-
pel and live a life that reflects the teachings of God, we will give the world in which we live a better
taste. We are all called to be disciples, dedicated followers of Jesus:
We live in a world where appearances frequently matter more than they should. We
are often overly concerned with how we look and with how impressive what we do ap-
pears to be. Contrary to this predominating tendency, Jesus teaches us that what we do
flows from who and what we are. We can enlighten the world with the message of the
gospel because our lives have been transformed by that gospel, now we ourselves are
light for others. We can serve others in various ways only because we have been
saved by God's grace, and now we are agents of that grace and the lives of others. Our
own renewal becomes the means through which God renews the world.
(Bergant, Dianne. Preaching the New Lectionary, Year A. The Liturgical Press, 1999)
It can be easy to be that light that Jesus speaks of in our Gospel: offering a kind and encouraging word
to a friend who may appear to be having a bad day, giving a little of your time by visiting the sick or the
elderly can really brighten one’s day, etc. Many times, it just takes a little effort on
our part to become that bright light to someone else.
Have a blessed week,
Deacon John
