Stage 1 IntroductionHow will you gain the students’ attention, engage the interest of the students and introduce the concept(s)?

First I will ask the students if they know what a recycling is and what goes into the recycling bin. I will hold up the recycling bin in the classroom.

I will play a fun and engaging song about recycling. I will tell the students to look for objects that can be recycled.

(Orrick, Phillippe & Urquhart, Recycle It, 2011)

After the video I will get students to tell me what objects they saw that could be recycled and I will pull these objects out of my sack and put them on the table.

The students will be sitting in group circle around the interactive whiteboard. They will be watching the 'Recycle It' clip and recalling what objects they saw which can be recycled.

They will name the objects I put out on the table from my sack.

(Reeves, K, Sack of Recyclable Goodies, September 17. 2014)

Stage 2 Body of lessonDescribe each activity and the order in which it will be undertaken.

I will instruct the students to go to their desks and I will hand out small plastic containers and a worksheet.

I will instruct students to trace their recycling symbol on the front and cut out only the objects that can be recycled, and place them into their recycling bin.

I will then go around and see who understands and can correctly classify, and extend on those who need help.

Students will be tracing, cutting and placing the recyclable objects that go into the bin, and leaving the other objects out (for example, the pizza does not go into the recycling bin).

(Reeves, K, Recycling Container and Worksheet, September 17, 2014).

Stage 3: Conclusion

I will ask the children to name the objects they have put into their recycling bins to assess who has understood the concept.

I will tell the children they did such good work that with a partner they can take turns at using the Ipad application Lunchtime Legends to practise putting the correct recyclables into the recycling bin.

(Brisbane City Council, Lunchtime Legends, September 17, 2014).

The children will name the objects they have put into their recycling bin.

The children will work in pairs and play Lunchtime Legends on the Ipad to further concrete what they have learned about recycling.
