Nombre ______________________________ Fecha ______________ Per _____ Pg ____APUNTES La Hora

How do you ask, “What time is it?

In Spanish, you say « ¿Qué hora es? »To be polite, you say « Perdón, me puede decir “¿Qué hora es?” »= “Pardon, could you (polite) tell me what time it is?”

How do you tell someone what time it is?

To tell someone what time it is, you have several options depending on the time. One o’clock + minutes is singular and uses ES LA UNA…The rest of the hours 2-12 are plural and use SON LAS #...

How do you say AM & PM? To say AM/PM you are saying IN the morning/afternoon/night. Use DE instead of EN/POR AM = DE la mañana (12 am – 11:59 am) PM = DE la tarde (12 pm – 5:59 pm) PM = DE la noche ( 6 pm – 11:59 pm)

The hour “on the dot”1:00, 2:00, 3:00 etc.

1:00 on the dot Es la una en punto. 12:00 on the dot Son las doce en punto.

The hour + 15 (quarter past)1:15, 2:15, 3:15 etc.

1:15 Es la una y cuarto. 12:15 Son las doce y cuarto.

The hour + 30 (half past)1:30, 2:30, 3:30 etc.

1:30 Es la una y media. 12:30 Son las doce y media.

The hour + 45 (quarter till)1:45, 2:45, 3:45 etc.

There are two ways to express this in Spanish. With the invention of the digital clock, adding the number is becoming more accepted: 1:45 Es la una y cuarenta y cinco. 12:45 Son las doce y cuarenta y cinco.

However, the more traditional way is toROUND UP the hour and SUBTRACT the minutes till. 1:45 Son las DOS MENOS cuarto. 12:45 Es la UNA MENOS cuarto.

3:45 ______________________________ 5:45 ______________________________

What if the time is not exactly “on the dot”, “quarter past,” “quarter till,” or “half past” ?

If the minutes are between 1 and 30, use “Y” and add the numbers: 1:10 Es la una y diez

If the minutes are between 30 and 59, use “MENOS” and subtract the minutes until the

NEXT hour. 9:53 Son las diez menos siete.

Nombre _________________________________ Per __________ Pg FPronunciation Guide for Pronunciation Test Español 1To pronounce words correctly:1. Learn the sounds of the following letters:

“C” can make a hard or a soft soundCA CICO = hard= “K” CE = soft= “S” or “TH” in SpainCUQUE= “Keh”QUI= “Key”

“G” can make a hard or a soft soundGA GIGO = hard= “G” GE = soft= “H”GUGUE= “Geh”GUI= “Gee” as in geese

“H” is always silent“J” makes an “H” sound“LL” makes a “Y” sound (like Yay)“Q” is always followed by “U”

If you can hear the “U” sound in a word, it’s spelled with a C (like cuándo). If you can’t, it’s spelled with a “QU” (like qué)

“V” can be pronounced as a “V” sound or a “B” sound, but these letters may not be interchanged when spelling.

“K” and “W” are borrowed letters. They rarely appear in Spanish words. The “K” sound comes from the C or Q combinations. The “W” sound comes from the U.

“Y” makes the sound of Y in Yay.“Z” makes an “S” sound, or a “TH” sound (in Spain).

2. Memorize the rules for dividing words into syllables.1. As often as possible, create each syllable with a consonant followed by a

vowel.2. Two strong vowels are always separated (A, E, O or weak vowel with an accent

í, ú).3. Divide two consonants unless they form one sound like CH, LL, RR or

consonant blend which is usually formed with a consonant + L or R like BL or BR, CL or CR, etc.

4. EXCEPTIONS: A prefix will be its own syllable like des-or-den, sub-li-mi-nal or in-ter-re-la-cio-na-do.

5. When 3 consonants appear together, the first one will usually be divided from the consonant blend that follows like in-glés.

3. Memorize the Pronunciation/Stress rules.1. Words that end in N, S, or a vowel, are NATURALLY stressed on the second-to-

last-syllable.2. Words that end in a consonant, except for N or S, are NATURALLY stressed on

the last syllable.3. Words that don’t follow these rules will need a WRITTEN ACCENT MARK to

show the correct pronunciation.4. Practice saying the following words. On the day of the test, you will be given a list of

10 words which you will say into a digital recorder and graded on your pronunciation. PLEASE ask if you are not sure how to say any of these words!
