TIPS TO PREVENT BACKPAIN

WAyANAd

Excellence is nothing less than brilliance or superiority but always to be remembered, it is neither an

inheritance nor an available product of a market. Excellence can be achieved with determination, hard work and fixed goals in life. Habits make a man perfect. Getting into a systematic pattern of life helps to develop habits which in turn support us to successfully reach our targets.

Life of an eagle is worth quoting. Every stage of their evolution can be associated to the evolution of Institutions and Nations. Eagles are up for life’s challenges. When an eagle hatches its eggs to bring forth young species, they remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest replacing them with thorns among other materials so that the young get uncomfortable in preparation for flying. Only if their comforts are reduced will they ever think of leaving the nest and only by leaving the nest will they ever learn to fly. The parent eagle is ready to let go off their young ones and face any risk knowing well what they will triumph in future.

Are we ready to leave our comfort zone? Routes are thorny and every step is a new experience. Development is

faster through a prickly bush but growth is retarded in a cosy zone. Willingness to face challenges should be the first agenda followed by hard work.

Before Abraham was made father of all nations in the bible he had to leave his father’s house. Only then he was asked to go out there and rule your world.

Bill Gates after dropping out of Harvard and starting a failed first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen with meagre chances of success. While his earlier ideas were an utter flop his determination and continuous try-outs later did work, creating the global empire that is Microsoft.

While Ford is today known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five time before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company

Michael Jordan the best basketball player at all times said “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life.

And that is why I succeed”.Excellence is never an easy game, it is

a fitting shoe for the ones who strive hard and stand firm despite failures.

MD’s MessageV George AntonyManaging Director

Change is inevitable in human life. Look, Think and Act…Be eager to bring about changes

in everything, whether big or small, implemented changes will project proportionate growth. From birth to death human life faces new experiences.

CRM DataAccurate customer data in CRM should be the most important tool because connecting with customers will soon be only through SMS/WhatsApp/ or other similar tools. Targeted fishing turns out to be successful for those with zero error analytical information like age, gender, profession etc.

Quality and purpose of CRM is defeated with dummy data. Besides, fake data updating can harmfully affect the company and concerned staff because law enforcement authorities can take the guilty to task.

KYC and Mobile NumberKYC (Know Your Customer) is primary to any transaction. By encouraging fake forex customer ID, some of the competitors are already under strict surveillance of DRI and RBI.

Strictly follow the basic guidelines of business. Firmly ensure that genuine ID and mobile numbers are collected from customers for any transaction and further confirm transaction as per guidelines only. Any loss incurred by strict adherence of principles will never affect the company’s

business but truthful dealings will fetch thrice the measure of business when compared to what a fraud group of 5-10% can generate.

Digital ProductsMobiles are becoming more user friendly and easily accessible. Be dominant in mobile search than in web search. The big change has occurred and it’s high time we start thinking differently with spur-of-the-moment actions, certainly ensuring ten times additional digital customers.

Brainstorm to revise our approach, use shrewd methods to understand their necessities and curiosity which may in turn be used to cross sell our products.

We are incorporating xpayshop.com which will be a marketplace for buying and selling second hand goods with no service charges. Idea is to create traffic and get more customer data to cross sell other products. Also planning to tie-up with a bank to offer debit card which can be accessed like any other ATM card for XPay which will mark a leap of many folds in XPay and its revenue.

All our branches should have Wi-Fi facility available for customers. Wi-Fi login and password should be exhibited in a prominent place within each branch enabling access to customers also.

Multiple ProductsEvery customer should be connected with multiple products by converting branches into efficient call centres. Cross selling and

updating in CRM call centre application should be made mandatory. Let your watchword be at least one new product sale by day end.

Positive ThinkingOpportunities for diversified thinking, expansion and progress are manifold but it all depends on our attitude, willingness to change and spread the positive fragrance to others. Honourable thoughts make you admirable, think big and you achieve immensely, anticipate progress and you climb peaks. Start thinking differently and positively, your doors will open to a wider spectrum of customers and opportunities.

A New IndiaIndia is growing digital at a lightning speed especially in payment areas. Few smart companies who are always alert will benefit. Are we willing to be part of this new race? • Branches should manage maximum online payments.• Get KYC done through Aadhar online using biometric inside our XPay app. • Communication to customers through XPay app on video. • XPay Mobile payments at all merchant locations using bar code scanner, QR code scanner.• NFC using Bluetooth, wifi etc. Strictly adhere the above norms expecting added innovative changes.

As foreign currency deposits of 2013 mature, investors are faced with tough choices amid falling

interest rates back home.In 2013, the Indian rupee touched a

record low amid capital outflows, triggering a liquidity crisis of foreign currency. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mobilised $26 billion (Dh95.5 billion) to $30 billion in foreign currency from non-residents, out of which at least 50 per cent came in from Gulf countries. The 3-year to 5-year foreign deposit was accruing an attractive 3-5 per cent return in currencies like dollars, Euros or Pounds.

But in September of 2016, the situation is different. The fixed deposits will mature, amid falling interest rate environment, and Indian investors in the Gulf and the UAE, who have traditionally preferred fixed deposits as a saving instrument despite the currency risks back home, will be faced with a different kind of question: how to get maximum returns while taking minimum risk.

Harsh Gupta, senior executive officer and senior vice-president at HDFC Bank Middle East and Africa concurred. “Investors will have to re-adjust risk return scale, going

forward. In 2013, risk was low and returns were much higher in this special deposit scheme. But now, to earn same returns, clients will have to look at taking higher risks, which itself shows that markets are stable and normal risk-return matrix is working,” Gupta said.

“The banks in India are in a much better liquidity condition. Enough liquidity is there in India. Banks per se in India do not need this money at this cost. Banks can replace this with much lower cost. Some other banks in some other geographies can look forward to this money, and see how best they can use it,” Gupta said,

Even with the potential of a rate cut in India, with the new central bank governor Urjit Patel taking the reins, analysts suggest that any cut on lending rates has the potential to reactivate the real estate market, which may trigger inflows into the property sector.

But finally, the argument is simple: are investors ready to face the risk of 2016 for a higher return, and that is a million-dollar question.

India is headed for an exponential increase in digital payments over the next four years, according to a new

study by Google (Alphabet Inc.) and Boston Consulting Group released on Monday. The digital payments industry in Asia’s third-largest economy will grow by 10 times to touch $500 billion by 2020 and contribute 15% of gross domestic product (GDP), the report predicted. Ever-increasing penetration of smartphones, the entry of several non-banking institutions offering payment services, consumer readiness to adopt digital payments, progressive changes in the

regulatory framework will power the trend, it said.

The contribution of non-cash modes of payments, i.e. cheques, demand drafts, net-banking, credit/debit cards, mobile wallets and unified payment interface (UPI), is seen doubling to 40% of the consumer payments segment by 2020. Non-cash transactions will exceed cash transactions in the economy by 2023, the report forecast.

Online payments through digital wallets and debit/credit cards have been emerging as a preferred transaction mode over the past few years, mainly due

to the ease of transaction, availability of smartphones and affordable Internet, and enhanced security and encryption methods, which led to greater confidence among customers.

The report predicts that the value of remittances and money transfers that will pass through alternate digital payment instruments will double to 30% by 2020.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data shows that mobile wallets have already surpassed mobile banking in volume terms.

Mumbai: Those looking to buy property in overseas destinations like Dubai will have

less headroom to consolidate remittances from family members. The RBI has said that a property purchased overseas has to be in the name of all the members who are making the remittance.

Despite a current account deficit, Indians have been allowed to send money abroad since 2004 under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The limits have been raised over the years from $25,000 annually to $2,50,000 a year now. In between, the limit was reduced to $75,000 when the

The Reserve Bank of India has simplified the Know Your Customer (KYC) rules. To open a bank

account, a customer needs to submit a proof of identity and proof of address together with a recent photograph.

The six documents required for proof of identity are passport, driving licence, voter identity card, PAN card, Aadhaar card issued by UIDAI, and NREGA card. You need to submit any one of these documents. If these documents also contain your address details, then it would be accepted as proof of address.

If one does not have any of these documents for proof of identity, one can

still open a bank account known as Small Account by submitting a recent photograph and putting one’s signature or thumb impression. Such accounts have some limitations: The balance should not exceed R 50,000, total credits in one year less than R1 lakh, total withdrawal and transfers not over R10,000 a month and foreign remittances cannot be credited to such accounts.

Electronic KYC is possible only for those who have Aadhaar number. The customer will have to authorise the Unique Identification Authority of India to release his identity/address through biometric authentication to the bank branch.

Introduction to open a bank account is not required.

One can transfer an account from one branch to another of the same bank; there is no need for a KYC exercise again. In case of change in address, one will have to submit a declaration about the current address.

If a customer has opened an account with a bank that is KYC-compliant, then to open another account with the same bank, furnishing of documents is not necessary.

Full KYC exercise is necessary for credit/debit/smart/gift cards.

KYC will have to be done for all those who want to make domestic remittances of R50,000 and above, and all foreign remittances.

rupee came under pressure due to taper tantrums. However, from March 2015, the limit has been hiked to $2,50,000 a year and individuals are allowed to do almost anything with the money, including buying immovable property, shares or simply gifting them to foreigners.

Brokers have been marketing apartments in international destinations like Dubai, Singapore, London and New York, citing high rentals as an investment opportunity. The annual limit of $2,50,000 translates into Rs 1.67 crore per annum for an individual, which is enough to buy a studio apartment in an international destination.

Since the scheme was available to all residents, including minors, brokers were advising buyers to pool resources. However, on Friday, the RBI issued a statement answering frequently asked questions on purchase of property, where it clarified that in case members of a family pool their remittances the property should be in the names of all the members who make the remittances.

The only purpose for which the remittances could not be used was for purchase of lottery, forex trading or setting up a company.

XPRESS MoNEy

Xpress moNey offers EDucatIoNal graNtS for chIlDrEN of uaE WorkErS

Xpress Money, a leading money transfer brand, has partnered with Dubai-based NGO SmartLife to

offer education support for the children of blue collar workers employed in the UAE.

The initiative is spearheaded by Xpress Money’s corporate social responsibility platform H.O.P.E, which highlights the money transfer brand’s commitment to “Helping Our People and Environment.”

The educational grants further strengthen H.O.P.E’s seven-year collaboration with SmartLife to improve workers’ lives through entertainment and sports competitions. Specifically, the educational grant is in support of SmartLife’s

‘SmartSapna’programme, which is dedicated to educating the India-based children of labourers in the UAE.

“We realise that providing their children with a good education is every parent’s dream. Through our H.O.P.E platform, in collaboration with our long-term partner SmartLife, we are now helping workers in the UAE fulfil this dream by providing their children with good education, thus setting a strong foundation for a prosperous future,” says Xpress Money’s vice president of global marketing, Ashwin Gedam.

H.O.P.E’s support of the SmartSapna initiative fits within its agenda driven by 3 global themes – financial literacy and

Xpress Money established a presence in Thailand in 2010 by partnering with Government Savings Bank, as it saw this country as a high-growth market thanks to

the number of migrants from Myanmar working here, he said.Xpress Money has enjoyed an annual growth rate of 22-25 per

cent, and it hopes to raise that figure this year and in the coming years after establishing more partners in Thailand and other countries in the region. It is also setting up a presence in Laos, the only country in Asean where Xpress Money does not have in its network.

One of the fastest-emerging corridors from Thailand is into Myanmar, because several billion people from that country are working here and they have to send money back home. This is an opportunity for Xpress Money to facilitate those transactions.

Taiwan is among one the highest contributors of remittances into Thailand because more than 30,000 Thais work there. Xpress Money will have bank partners in Taiwan this year in order to handle some of those money transfers. Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Denmark, the United states and Australia also account for high volumes of money sent to Thailand, he said.

As well, the company has seen significant outbound money transfers from Thailand to such places as India, the Philippines and South Korea.

By volume, Xpress Money ranks third in the money-transfer industry but Giriyan hopes his company will move up to second place within a few years thanks to its network expansion and low remittance fees.

With the aim of reaching the Arab audience and increasing brand awareness and recall among this target group through social media, Xpress Money launched a football

analysis program, Studio Xpress. The timing of the event coincided with Euro 2016 that took place between June and July, and made perfect sense for the brand due to the Arabs’ passion for football.

Xpress Money partnered with Mohammed Awaad – a famous football analyst, a social media influencer and the Editor of Sports 360 Arabia website. Quill Communications – represented by Maan Dalghan as the show of the host – along with the brand and Awaad, collaboratively designed the show, which had 11 episodes, and its amplification on social media platforms.

Ashwin Gedam, vice-president of global marketing and communications, Xpress Money, says, “Engaging with our customers personally has been a part of our brand ethos since its inception. We reward them, share their interests, engage in regular conversation and are part of events and occasions that are important to them. Studio Xpress was one such idea that was conceived with the objective of engaging with our customers through sport without trying to sell anything to them. It was a purely the coming together of Football crazy fans to celebrate and enjoy the sport without overt advertising. And that’s why it became a phenomenon to be reckoned with – because our audience recognized that we joined in their football conversations without a direct sales motive.”

inclusion, education, and relief work. The platform also helps Xpress Money engage with its global communities through a mix of philanthropy, relief work and social causes.

“Our support for the ‘SmartSapna’ education initiative is a continuation of H.O.P.E’s proud legacy of improving living standards worldwide through a range of initiatives. H.O.P.E has been very active across different communities globally, and we look forward to this powerful platform continuing its positive mission. At Xpress Money, we are committed to providing a better livelihood with the resources needed to make a genuine difference,” Gedam said.

With no financial commitment on the part of the state government, the state Cabinet decided to allow Dr. B R Shetty’s BRS Ventures to invest on its own and facilitate tourist flow to the falls. Giving details of the Cabinet decision, T B Jayachandra, minister for law and minor irrigation, said: “The project envisages reuse of water to retain the majesty of the fall all through the year. Currently, one could enjoy its picturesque view only during the monsoon and winter; during the summer, the waterfall fades out, disappointing visitors. The Top 200 Secrets of Success and the Pillars of Self Masteryby Robin Sharma

Dear Colleagues,As you would have already read about the new initiative which we have taken as an organization in the recent newsletter on “Mentoring Program and Career development”, I would like to take this opportunity to explain to all our colleagues about the Mentoring Program and who would be “Mentors” and “Mentees” and the importance of this initiative.

A mentor in the workplace is a person who provides guidance to a less-experienced employee, the mentee. A mentor can be another employee of the same company. The mentor is a role model who shares knowledge and advice to help the employee grow professionally. Mentoring relationships benefit the employee, as well as the employer and mentor, and have long-term advantages.

Benefits to the EmployeeAn employee benefits from a mentoring relationship because he/she has someone with greater knowledge and experience to turn to for advice. While a mentor won’t do the employee’s job for him, the mentor may demonstrate a task, guide the employee through solving a problem, or evaluate the employee’s work. A mentorship may help an employee feel less lonely at work, too, and encourage him to interact more with others. A mentor can provide an employee with tips on career growth and introduce the employee to other professionals. As the employee matures in his career, a mentor may remain a valued adviser to the employee.

Benefits to the OrganizationThe organization gains from greater output in the workplace. As employees turn to their mentors for advice, they make fewer mistakes on the job, cutting losses to the employer. Employees in mentoring relationships tend to have greater job satisfaction as well, which can mean a more positive work environment. Employers might also notice less resignations of employees as they feel a greater loyalty to the company. Because of this mentoring program even new employees will be attracted to join.

Benefits to the MentorMentors gain from the mentoring relationship, too. The opportunity to teach or advise others can increase the mentor’s confidence and own job satisfaction. The mentor is required to listen to the concerns of the employee and may develop a better understanding of employee issues and stronger communication skills. If the mentor is a supervisor, mentoring can improve his/her supervisory skills which can expand the mentor’s reputation.

Benefits to the ProfessionMentoring in the workplace can have long-term benefits as employees become more self-directed and develop stronger communication and problem-solving skills. This allows for a business to become more creative and focus its attention on growth, rather than training. Mentored employees value collaboration and sharing of information, which can lead to a stronger organization. Mentored employees are also apt to become involved in professional organizations that further both their careers and the profession itself.

I believe you would have gone thru the above benefits sincerely and understood its importance on the growth of each one of us. At this moment, I urge all our Regional Heads and Zonal Heads who are the Mentors and all our employees at the branches who will be the Mentees to kick start and participate in this initiative to make our Organization as one of the best places to work.

I will be closely monitoring the progress of this initiative so that it can be extended and improved further. All the best.

It is based upon encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect, and willingness to learn and share. Mentoring is ideally a 2 way professional relationship that develops over time, with each person asking questions, finding answers and making good decisions. 2. INSIGHT

HistoryOriginally it was called Mayanad meaning ‘The Land of Paddy Fields’ with indigenous tribal groups with the least population of Kerala State.

According to archaeological evidence, the Wayanad forests have been inhabited for more than 3,000 years. Historians are of the view that human settlement existed in these parts for at least ten centuries before Christ. Evidence of New Stone Age civilization can be seen in the hills throughout the present day Wayanad district. In ancient times, this land was ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe.

In later days, Wayanad came under the rule of the Pazhassi Rajahs of Kottayam royal dynasty. When Hyder Ali became the ruler of Mysore, he invaded Wayanad and brought it under his control. In the days of Tipu, Wayanad was restored to the Kottayam royal dynasty. But Tipu

handed over the entire Malabar region to the British, after the Sreerangapattanam treaty. This was followed by fierce encounters between the British and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Rajah of Kottayam. When the Rajah was driven to the wilderness of Wayanad, he organized the war-like Kurichiya tribals into a kind of people’s paramilitaries and engaged the British in several guerrilla type encounters.

Finally the British could only get the body of Pazhassi Raja, who killed himself in the interior forest and Wayanad fell into the hands of the British and with it came a new turn in the Home of this area. The British authorities opened up the plateau for cultivation of tea and other cash crops. Roads were laid across the dangerous slopes of Wayanad, from Kozhikode and Thalassery. These roads were extended to the cities of Mysore and Ooty through Gudalur.

LocationPlaced in the southern tip of Deccan Plateau, Wayanad district is located to the north-east of Kerala State, South India. Flanked by different levels of hills set high on the Western Ghats, the picturesque view is mesmerizing.

Quite a large area of the district is covered by forest but the continued and indiscriminate exploitation of the natural resources point towards an imminent environmental crisis. It has a large amount of dry and moist deciduous forest. Wayanad is home to endangered species.

The Kabini River, one of the three east flowing rivers of Kerala, is an important tributary of the Kaveri River. Almost the entire Wayanad district is drained by Kabini and its three tributaries, the Panamaram, Mananthavady, and Kalindy rivers. The Banasura Sagar Dam is built on one of the tributaries of the Kabini River.

WAyANAd

Through the roads poured in settlers from all parts of Kerala and the virgin forest lands proved a veritable goldmine with incredible yields of cash crops. When the State of Kerala came into being in November 1956, Wayanad was part of Kannur district. Later, south Wayanad was added to Kozhikode district. In order to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Wayanad for development, north Wayanad and South Wayanad were carved out and joined together to form the present district of Wayanad. This district came into being on November 1, 1980 as the 12th district of Kerala.

Places of Tourist AttractionChembra PeakAt a height of 2100 metres, the towering Chembra Peak is located near Meppadi in the southern part of Wayanad. It is the tallest peak in the region and climbing this peak would test one’s physical ability. The climb up the Chembra Peak is an

exhilarating experience, as each stage in the climb unfolds great expanses of Wayanad and the view gets wider as one goes up to its summit. Going up and coming down the peak would take a full day. Those who would like to camp at the top are assured of an unforgettable experience.

NeelimalaLocated in the southeastern part of Wayanad, and approachable from Kalpetta as well as Sulthan Bathery, Neelimala is a trekker’s delight, with options for different trekking routes. The sight from the top of Neelimala is a breathtaking one with a view to the Meenmutty falls positioned nearby and the valley in the forefront.

Meenmutty waterfallsLocated close to Neelimala, the spectacular Meenmutty falls can be reached through a 2 km trekking route from the main road connecting Ootty and Wayanad. It is the largest waterfalls in the district of Wayanad, and adds to one’s curiosity with its three stage falls dropping from about 300 metres.

ChethalayamYet another waterfall that attracts visitors to Wayanad is the Chethalayam falls, located close to Sulthan Bathery in the northern part of Wayanad. This waterfall is smaller in size when compared to Meenmutty. The falls and the adjoining areas are ideal locales for trekking and a haunt for bird watchers.

PakshipathalamPakshipathalam is located deep within the forest in the Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of more than 1700 metres. The region predominantly comprises of large boulders. The deep caves found here are home to a wide variety of birds, animals and distinctive species of plants. Pakshipathalam is located near Mananthavady and

a visit to the region would require a 7 km trek through the forest, starting from Thirunelli. Visitors to Pakshipathalam have to seek permission from the DFO- North Wayanad.

Banasura Sagar DamThe dam at Banasura Sagar is reckoned as the largest earth dam in India. The dam is located in the southwestern part of Wayanad district and is close to the Karalad Lake. The project area of the Banasura Sagar Dam also has the starting point for treks to the Banasura Peak. An interesting feature is a group of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas.

While taking in the captivating sights, sounds and fragrance of Wayanad, one may also shop for some delicacies of Wayanad like spices, coffee, tea, bamboo products, honey and herbal plants.

CURRENT affaIrS

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister has given its approval for introduction of steps for

promotion of payments through cards and digital means. The move aims at reducing cash transactions. Several short term (to be implemented within one year) and medium term measures (to be implemented within two years) have been approved for implementation by the Government Ministries/ Departments/ Organizations.

Promotion of payments through cards and digital means will be instrumental in reducing tax avoidance, migration of Government payments and collections to cashless mode discourage transactions in cash by providing access to financial payment services to the citizens to conduct transactions through card/ digital means and shifting payment ecosystem from cash dominated to non-cash/less cash payments.

The essential features of the proposals for promotion of payments through cards and digital means include steps for withdrawal of surcharge/service charge/ conveniencae fee on card/ digital payments currently imposed by various Government Departments/organizations and introduction of appropriate acceptance infrastructure in Government Departments/ organizations; rationalization of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on card transactions and a differentiated MDR framework for some key transaction segments; mandating payments beyond a prescribed threshold only in card/ digital mode; introduction of formulae linked acceptance infrastructure by the stakeholders of certain card products; rationalization of telecom service charges for digital financial transactions; promotion of mobile banking; and creation of necessary assurance mechanisms for quick resolution of fraudulent transactions and review the payments ecosystem in the country.

Background: The infrastructure of card/ digital payments is growing, but remains modest in comparison to cash payments. For card/ digital payments

to increase, they should be easy to use, readily available and accepted, should not impose any undue financial burden on the merchant and user, and should offer an appropriate level of security.

While the payment system initiatives taken in the form of Electronic Clearing Service Scheme, National Electronic Funds Transfer, Real Time Gross Settlement Scheme etc. have been impressive, the benefits of modern card/ digital payment systems are yet to reach all sections of the society and be accepted across the length and breadth of the country. Current experience and evidence indicates that the penetration and success of modern card/ digital payment products and services is concentrated to a large extent in the tier-1 and tier-2 locations of the country and mostly to those citizens who have access to the formal banking channels.

The introduction of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 has resulted in deeper acceptance and penetration of modern card/ digital payment systems in the country, Aadhaar Enabled Payment Systems (AEPS) has been brought to effect to leverage upon biometric verification and a domestic card network namely, RuPay.

The Reserve Bank of India has also recently approved licenses for setting up of Payments Banks with the objective of greater financial inclusion by the Payments Banks by providing small savings accounts and payments/ remittance services to migrant labour workforce, low income households, small businesses, and other unorganized sector entities.

The Union Finance Ministry has constituted 11 members high-level committee to suggest steps to promote card payments with an aim to discourage cash transactions. The 11-member committee will be headed by Principle Adviser for social sector in NITI Aayog and former Finance Secretary Ratan P Watal. The terms of reference of committee recommend various measures to incentivize transactions through cards and digital means, e.g. through tax incentives/rebates, introduction of cash

back/lottery. Review the payments system in the country and recommend measures for encouraging digital payments. Study and recommend need for changes, if any, in the regulatory mechanism under various laws, relevant for the purpose of promotion of payments by digital modes. Study feasibility of creating a payments history of all card and digital payments and ensure that merchants and consumers can leverage the data to access. Study and recommend ways for leveraging Unique Identification Number (UID) or any other proof of identity for authentication of card and digital transactions. Study introduction of single window system of payment gateway to accept all types of cards and digital payments of government receipts. Look into the scope of integration of all government systems like Public Finance Management System, Bharatkosh, PayGov and eKuber. Identify regulatory bottlenecks and suggest changes. Study global best practices in payments and identify possible market failures along with suitable interventions. The Committee will submit its report in one year. Its member will include former RBI Deputy Governor H R Khan, Chairman of Indian Banks Association, President of Nasscom and CBDT Chairperson. At the background the high-level committee has been set up following a decision taken by the Union Cabinet in February 2016 for introduction of steps for promotion of cashless payments (transactions) through cards and digital means. The Cabinet had approved withdrawal of surcharge, service charge and convenience fee on card and digital payments. It also approved mandating payments beyond a prescribed threshold only through a card or digital mode. This decision was taken in pursuance of Union Government’s promise for measures that were announced in the 2015 Budget as one way to curb the flow of black money is to discourage cash transactions.

The sales chief picks it up and starts cleaning it with his handkerchief. Suddenly, a genie emerges out of a curtain of purple smoke. The genie is grateful to be set free, and offers them each a wish.

The HR chief is wide-eyed and ecstatic. He says, “I want to be living on a beautiful beach in Jamaica with a sailboat and enough money to make me happy for the rest of my life.”

Poof! He disappears. The sales chief says, “I want to

Moral of the Story: Always let your boss speak first.

LIFE StylE

While eating food, it should be properly mixed with saliva. Only such food

goes to the blood stream as good food but if it does not mix well, it goes as bad food. Our saliva contains many enzymes which are helpful in separating the constituents from the food. Only the food that is properly chewed and mixed with saliva can be digested properly by the stomach. The undigested food turns out to be waste matter.

Many of us may say, “We do mix saliva with food when we eat.”

However, this is not true. Whoever eats food with their lips open while chewing the food, saliva will not mix with the food. Chew the food with your lips closed. Only then the saliva will mix well with the food.

What is the difference between keeping the lips open and keeping them closed when we chew the food?

Imagine the food as a ball, and saliva as another ball. When we eat with the lips open, the air goes into the mouth and prevents the saliva from mixing with the food. Thus, it stops proper digestion in the mouth. Air is the enemy for digestion in the mouth. Therefore, whenever you eat any food, please open your lips only for sending the food inside

the mouth. Once the food is inside the mouth, keep chewing the food without separating the lips till you swallow the food.

In countries such as USA, UK, Italy, etc. the prevalence of Diabetes is very less. It is assumed that the people of these countries have the habit of chewing the food with their lips closed.

Please do not immediately conclude that the people of some countries are intelligent and the people of some other countries are foolish. People of different countries follow patterns comfortable to them for various causes and illnesses also differ from country to country for the same reason.

Therefore, from now on, please chew the food keeping your lips closed. You may think that it will take more time to eat if you chew with your lips closed. In fact it takes less time. You can keep a piece of Roti in your mouth and chew 40 times keeping your lips open. The Roti will not become a paste and it will remain as Roti only. But, if you chew four times keeping your lips closed, the Roti will be totally smashed into a paste. Without any need to swallow it, it will just slide down your throat.

You can thus eat within a short

21Xpressions - September 2016

duration of time by closing the lips. Moreover, because the enemy called air is not present saliva quickly separates all the constituents of the food and digests the food properly. There may be a small discomfort when we eat with closed mouth. The jaw may slightly pain for about a week. This is because we start a new habit which we did not have for several decades. But, after a week, there will be no pain and we can be comfortable throughout our life. Thus, the second most important principle in our treatment is, whatever may be the food we eat, keep your lips closed while chewing till you have swallowed the food.

Fatalism is the idea that everything is destined to happen, and humans have no control over their future.

In philosophy, all happenings, including moral choices, are completely determined by previously existing reasons.

Could be genetic-Inherited traits from forefathers, Might be Rearing-Upbringing of parents or environmental-Atmosphere created by Spouse, Boss, Work place, Economy etc.

But the story of Dr.Glenn Cunningham challenges this theory.

On June 16, 1934, Glenn Cunningham ran the mile in 4:06.8 minutes, breaking the world’s record. A young man from Madison Square Garden, who was medically not expected to run or walk, and very meagre chances to survive with sheer determination, ran the world’s fastest mile.

Now, to the true story about athlete Glenn Cunningham who was horribly burned in a schoolhouse fire at the age of eight. Doctors predicted he would never walk again.

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned, pot-bellied coal stove. A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.

One morning they arrived to find the schoolhouse engulfed in flames. They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the flaming building more deadly than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to a nearby county hospital.

The dreadfully burned, semi-conscious boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his mother that her son would surely die for the terrible fire had crushed the lower half of his body.

But the brave boy made up his mind to survive. Somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive. When the mortal danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his mother speaking quietly. Since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in the lower part of his body, it would be better if he had died, since he was doomed to be a lifetime cripple with no use at all of his lower limbs.

Once more the brave boy made up his mind not to be a cripple, but he would walk. Unfortunately he had no motor ability down the waist. His thin legs just dangled lifeless.

Ultimately he was released from the hospital. Every day his mother would massage his little legs, but there was no feeling, no control, nor any change. Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever.

When he wasn’t in bed, he was confined to a wheelchair.

VG NAIR’S factS

One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day, instead of sitting there, he threw himself from the chair. He pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him.

He worked his way to the white picket fence. With great effort, he raised himself up on the fence. Then, stake by stake, he began dragging himself along the fence, resolved that he would walk. He started to do this every day until he ground a smooth path all around the yard beside the fence. There was nothing he wanted more than to develop life in those legs.

Ultimately his daily massages, his iron persistence and firm determination helped, and he did develop the ability tostandup, thentowalkhaltingly, walkbyhim–andsoon to run.

He started walking to school, enjoy the sheer joy of even running. Later, in college he made the track team. In 1936 he ran the world’s fastest mile, voted “Most Popular Athlete” by his fellow athletes!!!!!

Is it justifiable to curse the situations and retain yourself on a low profile or fight against the odds and prove the purpose of your life in this mighty world?”

Let Positive determination be our watchword.

CULTURAL INDIa

Athachamayam is celebrated as a fore-runner of Onam celebration, popularly marked

as the traditional harvest festival of Kerala state. Conducted regularly in the Malayalam month of Chingam which generally falls in the months of August / September, are eagerly awaited upon by people of Kerala irrespective of caste or religion.

A season to eyewitness and enjoy almost all the traditional art forms of Kerala. The event held at the Royal historical town of Tripunithura is a celebration of a legendary victory of the Kochi King. Tripunithura being a part of Kochi, is also a place of tourist attraction during this season. In olden days it was customary for the king to travel with his entire back-up to the Tripunithura fort which also turned out to be an occasion for his subjects to greet the king and see him at close quarters. The procession, now without the king, still retains its majestic charm, and is conducted in a spectacular manner and is being conducted by the Tripunithura Municipality with whole hearted co-operation of the public.

The magnificence of the procession is enriched with elephants decked out with rich decorative coverings, floats, musical ensembles, assortment of traditional art forms etc.

On the festival day, the Maharaja undertook the ritualistic Attachamayam march from Tripunithura to the Vamanamoorthy Temple in Thrikkakara. After offering his special prayers there, the grand parade makes a halt at the royal quarters at Puthen Bungalow on his

way back, and finally moves towards the sprawling Hill Palace compound.

Representatives from all communities accompanied the Kochi Maharaja during Athachamayam. They included a priest from Karingachira Church, head priest of the mosque Nettur Thangal, and Chembil Arayan, a representative of the fisher folk. Nowadays, a senior representative of the Cochin royal family, along with the other two religious leaders, jointly flag off the ceremony.

Although the reign of royalty had come to an end with the attainment of independence and re-organisation of states, the festival is still celebrated in all its glory to mark the beginning of Onam, the state festival of Kerala.

Some of the folk art forms such as Theyyam, Kummatti, Kolkali, Mayilattom, Karakattom, Kummi, Poykal, Ammankudam, Pulikkali, Kathakali, Aattakkavadi, Panchavadyam, Chendamelam etc are displayed in the parade. Floats depicting immortal moments from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana and from the Bible as well as current social issues, reflect the secular nature of the festival, highlighting unity and harmony. Myths and legends of the ancient past in the forms of gods and goddesses lend colour and meaning to the event. There are also cultural competitions and variety entertainment activities held as part of the festival. Apart from the regular footpath vendors who deal with items from handicrafts and cottage sectors, a ten-day trade fair is also organised at Tripunithura.

Onam festival falls on the tenth day from Atham and it marks the commemoration of Vamana avatara of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali who Malayalees consider as their King. In Kerala, it is the festival celebrated with most number of cultural elements such as Atthachamayam, Vallam Kali, Pulikali, Pookkalam, Onathappan, Thumbi Thullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onapottan etc. Onam is indicative of Kerala’s agricultural past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival.

Significance: Onam is an ancient pre religious festival which still survives in modern times. Kerala’s rice harvest festival and the Festival of Rain Flowers, which fall on the month of Chingam, celebrates the Asura King Mahabali’s annual visit from Pathala (the underworld). Onam is unique and spread religious harmony since Mahabali and all secular Asura Kings are revered by the people of Kerala since prehistory. Back Pain? ! Four out of five people share the same problem. There are simple self-help

strategies which renders solution within few days or weeks.

Most often back pain is the result of an everyday activity done incorrectly — activities as common as twisting to reach or lift an object, sitting at a computer in the same position for hours, bending over to vacuum, and carrying shopping bags.

Just a little adjustment to your pattern of activities will be effective to keep away your problem in the long run.

Simple Prevention Techniques•Regularexercise-regularphysical

activity can help ease inflammation and muscle tension.•Bodyweight–Excessfat, especially

in your midsection, can make back pain worse because it puts strain on your lower back. Staying within 10 kilos of your ideal weight may help to control back pain.•Sleepingposition-Ifyou’re

inclined to back pain, talk with your doctor about the best sleeping position. Sleeping on your side with your knees pulled up slightly toward your chest is sometimes suggested.

a higher heel.•KeepYourWalletLight-Sitting

on an overstuffed wallet may cause discomfort and back pain. If you’re going to be seated for a longer period, take your wallet out of your back pocket.•TheRightHandbag-Alwaysusea

bag or briefcase with a wide, adjustable strap that’s long enough to reach over your head. When carrying a heavy bag or case without straps, switch hands frequently to avoid putting all the stress on one side of the body.•AvoidBackBraces-Variousback

supports are available, from elastic bands to special corsets. They can be helpful after certain kinds of surgery, but there is not much evidence that they help treat chronic back pain.•ImproveandbalanceCalciumand

Vitamin D Intake - Strong bones can help prevent osteoporosis. It’s one of the most common causes of back pain later in life, particularly for women. Always consult your doctor before taking any kind of supplement.•Stretch-Standing,sitting,orlying

down in one place for an extended amount of time may be a necessary part of life but it’s not healthy for your back. Relieve the strain of the day whenever you can by getting up, walking around, and doing some simple stretches.

Always keep in mind ‘Prevention is better than Cure’

HEALTH corNEr

Put one pillow under your knees and another under your lower back if sleeping on your back. •SittingPosture-Thebestchair

for preventing back pain is one with a straight back or low-back support. Keep your knees a bit higher than your hips while seated. Prop your feet on a stool if required.•ReduceStress–Stressmakesyour

muscles tensed and constant tension can cause back pains.•EatHealthy–Practicehealthy

eating habits and maintain a healthy weight. A healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, dairy products, and whole grains will keep your digestive tract on track which will further help to keep away from back problems.•QuitSmoking-Mostpeopledon’t

realize that smoking also can be a cause of persistent back pain. Research also shows smoking can make existing back pain worse. It’s not entirely clear how smoking affects back health, but one possibility is that it narrows blood vessels.•LiftingObjects-Don’tbendover

from the waist to lift heavy objects. Bend your knees and pull in your stomach muscles holding the object close to your body as you stand up. Don’t twist your body while lifting. •AvoidHighHeels-Theycanshift

TIPS TO PREVENT BACK PAIN

‘Water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink’ Earth is covered with water and is also called a ‘Blue Planet’ but the availability of fresh

water is less than 3% , of which a large quantity is made up of snow and ice while another portion is contaminated and wasted. 97% of water is salty and hardly 1% is available for consumption. No living organisms can live without water.

Most of us have experienced the commotion when our taps run out of water at least for a few hours. It is unimaginable to live without water. It is a basic necessity just as air and land.

Water conservation means planned, meticulous use of water without wastage. It aims at achieving sustainability and meeting human appeal for water. Conservation at the domestic, industrial and agrarian level is correspondingly vital.

clean and pure and conserves the environment. It is also important because the supply of water is limited.

Population is rising day by day and the requirements are also increasing immensely but the quantity of water in always the same. It is neither increasing nor decreasing and the only solution to conserve for the future is sustainable usage. Planned use of water without wastage, fulfilling the present needs and saving sufficient for the future.

‘Water is Precious’. The need to conserve water is obvious.

Are we ready for a self-introspection? Proud to hold positions, adding feathers to

our cap, we sometimes are surprised to learn unpredictable, amazing lessons from the most unforeseen humble people. How far are we worth living? Is our life meant to showcase our pride, arrogance, pomp and show to hurt and despise others? Is our attitude ‘Tit for Tat’?

A wonderful experience shared by a friend was very inspiring and thoughtful.

One fine morning my friend Ben hopped into a cab and took off to the airport. Travelling was a routine for his work and so he started reading the newspaper as soon as he got into the vehicle. The driver was smoothly chauffeuring within limited speed observing the traffic rules, when he suddenly slammed the brakes. Ben lifted up his head to find a black car which came from the wrong side of a parking lot, and had jumped into the main street suddenly which nearly collided with the cab. The cab skidded and missed the other car by just few inches.

The driver of the black car whipped

his head out and started yelling at the chauffeur for no fault of his. Ben’s taxi-driver smiled and waved out at the other guy in a cool and friendly manner. He was truly calm and friendly. Ben was taken aback to witness the situation. Benaskedthetaxidriver–‘Why

did you just do that? This guy could almost ruin your car and sent us to the hospital!’

The drivers answer was a giant eye-opener and a new lesson for the day which lasts lifelong.

He explained that ‘many people are like GARBAGE TRUCKS. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointments. As and when their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Today it happened to be the two of us’. Ben was even more shocked. The driver further continued and advised Ben ‘Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage

trucks take over their day’.This is when the chauffeur taught

Ben, what he now call as the ‘Law of the Garbage Truck’

Let our days not be made up of regrets. Live this short span of life loving people who treat you right and patiently praying for those who always gives pain. Often happens even the presence of certain people are not quite welcome but there are certain folks who spread a warm and beautiful fragrance wherever they reach.

Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it. There is no one who leads a smooth life. It is rightly said ‘Life is not a bed of roses but a bed of thorns’. Each one of us can be ‘a garbage truck’ or ‘a bouquet of fragrance’ wherever we are and to whomever we meet in our day to day living. Yes, the choice is purely left to us.

Bring joy and happiness around you with a positive attitude wishing the best for others just as yourself. Let us all have ‘A garbage free life’.

SPECIAL DAYS IN SEptEMBEr

International Chocolate Day - Sept 13

Chocolate is one of the world’s favourite flavours, possibly the most loved taste across 7 continents. This magic bean has been consumed by humans

from as far back as 1900 BC, and was an integral part of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations and culture. Europeans combined it with milk and sugar, and with the Industrial Revolution and mass production, the modern era of chocolate began. Though it originated in the Americas, today the small African country of Cote D’Ivoire produces 30% of the world’s cocoa. Everyone loves it, the recipes are endless and September 13th is celebrated as international chocolate day. While most of us don’t need a special day to indulge in the rich creamy glory that is chocolate, International Chocolate Day gives us just one more reason to consume this delectable confection in copious quantities. It is

celebrated mostly by individuals, local candy stores and bakeries, independent chocolatiers and large candy corporations. It is marked by a profusion of delicious recipes all over the internet, from a 15-minute chocolate milk pudding to extravagant meringues, pies, layer cakes, soufflés and mousses. Mass producers like Hershey, Nestle, Cadbury, and organizations like the National Confectioners Association also take the opportunity to celebrate what is a huge industry all over the world. Dark chocolate also has many proven health benefits. It is a powerhouse of antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals produced by metabolism of fat. This has an array of positive effects on your body, ranging from improving cardio-vascular health to preventing chronic diseases. It has been shown to reduce blood pressure, as well as, interestingly enough, help regulate blood sugar. Finally, it has also been linked to the release of endorphins - the feel-good hormone, which might explain why it is so widely known and loved as a mood-lifter.

The factors contributing to the disease are unknown; however 5 percent of the Alzheimer’s has been reported to have a hereditary origin. Though a number of researches are being done to find more on the disease and its cure, till now only symptomatic treatment are available for it and neither the reason behind the disease or its progression is clearly understood.

Awareness about this degenerative and irreversible disorder is very important to understand and care for the patients affected with Alzheimer’s. The World Alzheimer’s Day focuses on getting more people know about the disease and why and how the patients could be managed though the disease itself cannot be cured or controlled as per the development now. The first people who should be educated on the symptoms and management of the disease are those who have someone suffering from it.

In most of the cases the early Alzheimer’s symptoms are mistaken for age related forgetfulness and the

disease is diagnosed only after it advances to a higher stage making it equally difficult for the patient and for the caregivers. The International Alzheimer’s day tells the people that they are not alone in their misery and someone next to them are facing the same or similar trauma, the talk show and the articles on the disease helps in educating the world to know more about the disease. The day also promotes the donation into the fund for Alzheimer’s research which may someday provide a breakthrough for the treatment and new findings into key to unlock the disease.

The ADI (Alzheimer’s Disease International) launched the International Alzheimer’s

Day on 21st September 1994 on their tenth annual conference. Since then International Alzheimer’s Day or the World Alzheimer’s Day is observed every year on the 21st of September to spread the understanding of this degenerating disease of the central nervous system.

The Alzheimer’s organization around the globe keeps their focus on the day by creating awareness about this progressive and irreversible disease which has millions of victim in every part of the world with at least two people getting the disease every three minutes.

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease of the nervous system where the patient starts to lose their memory and in later cases even show behavioural disorders and forgets their own identity. Dementia is the major symptom of Alzheimer’s disease where the person loses the activity of the brain and the memory.
