Arguably one o the biggest projectso LFC or the year, the OrSem lm isa production that doesnt just branch out
to other committees o LFC but to non-
members as well.
Though key roles such as director,
cinematographer, editor and the like were
reserved or the Production Core, other
important roles like production design-
ers, personal assistants, location manag-
ers and such were open or any bona de
members o LFC. The O-Film team grew
even bigger by branching out to non-mem-
bers as the production needed a talented
cast lled with singers and dancers.
Every lming day at ideally 12:30 PM,
the team would meet at Colayco Pavilion
to prepare or lming. The actors would
practice their lines while the make-up
team and PAs would prepare them, the
props team would start preparing the
items needed or the shoot, set designers
would put up the decorations on the set,
directors and cinematographers would

prepare the cameras, all while the
production manager shouted at
people to keep them on their toes.
Shoots would go on rom 12:30 PM
all the way up to 5 PM rom Mondayto Friday, as well as a ew Saturdays.
Once lming was nished, the
work was then transerred on to
the editors. For transparency, the
directors and editors would upload
video updates o the lms status
and even show samples o it such asthe JAFEEL BRO loop.
On the morning o its screening
during the second day o OrSem,
a number o the cast and crew
members met at the Irwin Theater
and watched the reshmen enjoy the
highlight o their summer.

EXPERIENCING
Last July 11, 2013, the Loyola FilmCircle held a lm symposium or theupcoming indie lm Tuhog at the Escal-
er Hall. Guests Veronica Velasco, Jinky
Laurel, Carmi Raymundo, Manuel Chua
Jr. and Jake Cuenca came to promote their
movie, discuss the local lm industry in a
realistic perspective and advise those who
are interested in becoming a part o it.
As described by them, Tuhog, which
means skewer in Filipino, is not your
usual romantic comedy. It eatures three
characters rom dierent walks o lie - Fi-
esta (Eugene Domingo), who is an unhap-
py bus barker, Tonio (Leo Martinez), a re-
tired man who decides to pursue his dream
to open a panaderia and Caloy (Enchong
Dee), a young boy who attempts to remedy
his relationship with his girlriend. Their
lives become intertwined when the bus
they are all on gets into an accident, and

The speakers discussed the diculties
that arose rom lming this movie. Ve-
ronica Velasco, the director, talked about
how precise she had to be with lming
because o the tight budget. Jinky Laurel,
the scriptwriter, mentioned that theres
always a need to revise the script and
that it was hard to make one that would
satisy everyone. Jake Cuenca, one o the
lms actors, mentioned that it was hard
to work around his schedule in order to
shoot scenes or the movie.
Just like the lm, the symposium was
also about lie. Although the advices given
were mostly or lmmakers, they could
apply to anyone. Manuel Chua Jr., another
actor, said, I you love what youre doing,
keep doing it. The rest o the speakers
also emphasized that it was important to

have passion and vision. Carmi Raymun-
do, the creative producer o Star Cinemas,
talked about how the rst consideration
in lmmaking is i it will be relevant to
people and that it is about the number
o hearts that get touched. Veronica
Velasco also discussed that, saying that
although the process will be dicult, it
will be ullling in the end. Jake Cuenca
addressed the need to keep improving -
ater all, getting in the industry is dier-
ent rom staying in. For writers, Jinky
Laurel and Carmi Raymundo mentioned
that to become better, one must continue
writing, be open to new experiences and
talk to people to nd more stories to tell.
All in all, it was an inspiring experience.
I became more determined to learn as
much as I can in the art o lmmaking and
open my eyes to stories that need to be
told. More than anything, though, I was
thankul because it served as a reminder
to accept criticisms as grateully as pos-
sible, put as much passion and love into
our actions and celebrate lie daily.

It was an aternoon o magic, antasy, adventure and
un as LFC members, old and new, gathered at the MVPRoodeck or LFCS rst ever grand GA! Held last July 15,
the theme o the GA was Disneyland and what better way
to celebrate the happiest place on Earth than with the hap-
piest org on Earth? LFC members were decked out as some
o our avorite and well-loved Disney characters. Classics
were present o course such as Cinderella, Snow White,
Aladdin, Cruella De Vil, the Queen o Hearts, Peter Pan
and Mickey and Minnie Mouse. One guy went the extramile and dressed up as the Little Mermaids Ariel but with
quite a twist. Members also came as some o the more re-
cent Disney characters such as the ice cream guy rom Lilo
and Stitch, Mr. Fredricksen and Russell rom Up, Sharpay,
Ryan and Ms. Darbus rom High School Musical, the Jonas
Brothers, Kim Possible, George and Meg rom Paperman
and many more.

There were superheroes such as
Iron Man and Spiderman and a ew
unorthodox characters such as the
black spirit rom Spirited Away. I
heard that even Walt Disney madean appearance. All in all, the spirits
were high and everyone was de-
nitely excited or what was going to
be a grand ride.
The GA began with some games
as members arrived at the MVP
Roodeck. Once everyone was pres-ent and gathered, members were
asked to group themselves or some
un bonding experience. Members
were asked to talk about their avor-
ite Disney characters and movaies.
Ater that it was time or rounds
around the dierent booths in the
MVP Roodeck. The booths were
manned by the dierent department
and project heads o LFC and each
booth was o course Disney-themed.
As the dierent groups visited each
booth, students learned more about
the roles and jobs o the dierent
departments o LFC and acquainted
themselves with the head and depu-
ties o each department. Members
also learned about the dierent LFC
fagship projects they can join and be
a part o such as Under the Stars and
the Ateneo Video Open.

Ater the rounds it was time to announce
the winners o the costume contest. Crowd
avorites like Kuzco and Ariel (the deter-
gent guy) were just some o the winners o
amazing LFC goodies.
LFCs rst ever grand GA is denitely one
or the books. There was no better way to
welcome all the newbies and kick o whats
sure to be a un-lled and amazing year
with LFC. Im sure all members, old and
new, are very excited or what is in store
or them in the happiest org in the Ateneo;
bringing us closer to our happy-ever-ater.

Beore the actual GA,
mini games were played
to get the ball rolling,
with lots o LFC merchan-
dize serving as more than
enough reason to join in.
Aterwards, the GA ocial-
ly began with an interesting
take on the age-old parlour
game, The Boat Is Sink-
ing. As the game split org
members into groups, it
was not uncommon to see
people comparing and talk-
ing about their costume or
their avourite Disney char-
acters. Ater the game, the
LFC members were then di-
vided into groups and dis-
persed in accordance with
the program.

The General Assembly had the
dierent project committees and
departments set up booths that
showed what exactly new and old
members can expect rom LFC 16.
The new booths system ensured that
members, now roaming in their pre-
determines groups, would be able to
listen more ully to each department
and better understand what ex-
actly they can expect rom LFC this
year. While some groups toured the
booths, others sat back and enjoyed
this years LFC Film, which poked
un at lmmakers and lm bus
alike. Merienda was also served to
all members as they enjoyed the lm.

bert Dy, an experienced
movie critic employed in
ClickTheCity among
others. According to
him, what makes a good
story is change. There is
substantial change and
proound change, the
latter being what makes a
story great. He also talks
about change o sel: You
go [into the moviehouse]
and let [the movie] change
you. For him, one does
not need an extensive
education on lm to be a
critic. The most impor-
tant thing, he says, is
knowing why or why not
you liked the lm the
change you experience.
Mr. Dy was ollowed by
the co-ounder o 4AM
Hustle Productions, Deej
Fabian. He spoke about
event coverage and its
ethics how you tell a
story but still respect the
people in it. Enjoy the
moment with them, he
states, [but] dont go ull
retard. He goes on to
describe how photogra-
phers and videographers
are ninjas; they are not
the stars o the show. Its
also not just about getting
the best shot. You have to
consider the people. Dont
ruin the moment.

MAN OFSTEEL
RICHARD WEBB, CREATIVES:
It was good but it didnt meet my
expectations. The movie was just
weird. Didnt get Superman vibes out
o it. 6/10
UNO DE LOS REYES, PROMOTIONS:
I think the lm did a brilliant job
o showing what internal conficts
Superman had, in a way the Christo-
pher Reeve lms didnt. Plus, really
great action scenes you could never
have seen with Lex Luthor, even in his
battle armor. 10/10
CHYNNA SANTOS, PROMOTIONS: Still
not on the same level as Christopher
Reeves Superman, but lots and lots o
potential. Also: shirtless Henry Cavill.
8/10
LUI MENDOZA, HUMAN RESOURCES:
I thought it was a much needed re-
boot o the ranchise. Wasnt perect,
but opening the gates or a much
grander DC Cinematic Universe makes
me so happy! About time WB showed
it some real love! 8/10
LEX CELERA, HUMAN RESOURCES: Great
cinematography, but the dialogue
was poor and the music repetitive.
Intimate but laborious. 6/10
NIKKI PAYAWAL, INTERNALS AVP: Henry
Cavills beauty was so distracting
that I couldnt nd anything negative
about the movie. 8/10
TIFF GO, DOC AND PUB EXECUTIVE: The
only scene I really loved was the end,
but otherwise Cavill saved the lm to
be honest. 5/10
AVERAGE SCORE: 7.3/10

The Place Beyond the Pinesclocks in at a hety twohours and twenty minutes,
but I eel like it shouldve been
longer. This isnt exactly a caseo I could watch it orever
though. I anything, director
Derek Cianrances second lm
is kind o tough to sit through;
its dark, dirty, and depressing
or most o its running time.
The movies many themes
bring out some breathtakingsequences, although not all
the questions get satisying
answers. Nevertheless, The
Place Beyond the Pines is still a
masterully-crated tale eatur-
ing some antastic perormanc-
es and an unrelenting sense o
tension and emotion.

Co-written by Cianrance,
Ben Coccio, and Darius Marder,
this story sees stuntbiker Luke
Glanton (Ryan Gosling) becom-
ing a motorcycling bank robberin order to provide or his
ex-lover Romina (Eva Mendes)
and the son he never knew
they had. This ateul decision
makes him cross paths with
novice policeman Avery Cross
(Bradley Cooper), and their
encounter changes their livesorever. Divulging any urther
details will ruin the experi-
ence, I promise you. Cianrance
took a huge risk with the
lms structure, but he pulls
it o incredibly well, carrying
over dramatic weight to each
succeeding scene, even when
character perspectives shit.
Some people might nd the
lm a bit predictable in certain
scenes, but its a credit to the
writing and directing that
whatever happens onscreen
remains resh and natural.
The sharp script never wastes
a conversation, treating every
word as a crucial part o each
characters development.
As a result, every act o
violence is rightully appall-
ing, and every tear eels like a
prayer. And when the camera
goes handheld, not only is the
shakiness actually eective, butit seems necessary as well. The
increased intimacy makes the
stunning chase scenes, as well
as some quieter moments, eel
truly edge-o-your-seat.
However, acting is where
The Place Beyond the Pines tru-
ly shines. Gosling is terriying
with a gun, but also genuinely
vulnerable when with a child.
Later in the lm, Dane DeHaan
appears as that troubled
teenager archetype he plays so
well. But his angst never eels
orced, and his moments o
deance are a mixture o both
triumph and pathetic despera-
tion. But in my opinion, Brad-
ley Cooper undeniably steals
the show. Avery Crosss story
arc is ridiculously gripping,
and allows Cooper to show o
a range o wildly contrasting
emotions without letting go o
his characters central sense
o guilt.
But The Place Beyond the
Pines is ar rom perect. There
are quite a ew scenes which I
think go by too quickly despite
their seeming importance.
Also, I eel that the nal story
arc (which is supposed to tie
everything together) doesnt
get any solid resolution. Be-
cause o this, all the symbolism
scattered (somewhat messily)
throughout the lm eels a
tad pointless. Regardless, The
Place Beyond the Pines is still
completely worth checking out.
Absorbing storytelling, incred-
ible acting, great cinematog-
raphy, and an awesome score
make it one o the best and
most original lms to come out
this year.
