THE UA&P FACULTY Library Committee trooped to the 30th Manila International Book Fair last September 16 to 19 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City to choose from among rare and interesting resources to add to the library’s every-expanding collection.

UA&P Faculty and Staff members also had a hand in the selection of books. Dr. Alfonso Hiquiana, Dr. Theta Ponce, Prof. Sofia David, Dr. Corazon Toralba, Ms. Asuncion Magsino, Ms. Nilda and Salazar, Mr. Romeo Venes, Ms. Boots Ruelos, and Ms. Josette Reyes were among the library’s advisers for the choosing of books.

All books selected during the book

fair were simultaneously delivered to the Library. Materials were checked against the collection for duplicates and faculty members were notified through e-mail for the final evaluation.

About 200 book dealers and publishers participated in the annual book fair to exhibit their best and most recent publications.

In the publishing industry, book fairs are held year round in various locations and are similar to trade shows. The event gives publishers to interact with their customers, meet new authors and gauge their performance against competing press houses.

Schools and book collectors also visit such fairs for valuable finds for reduced prices.

Literature books top DELL usage stats BOOKS ON LITERATURE are the favorite among the

University of Asia and the Pacific Don Eugenio Lopez Library (DELL)’s growing collection, according to data from the University Library.

Books on this branch of the humanities were borrowed 2,660 times out of the 11,664 total number of books the DELL undergraduate library lent out last school year.

While literature readers borrow more books than their counterparts in other disciplines, history and biology books are the second and third most in demand resources in the library, borrowed 1,669 and 1,650 times respectively.

A close fourth are books on religion which were borrowed 1,560 times.

Books on the social sciences meanwhile top the most borrowed books in the graduate library, Don Emilio Ejercito Library (DEEL) where 4,821 books were borrowed last year.

DEEL loaned readers a total of 1,804 books on social sciences, while only 759 on education — a far second — were borrowed.

10 tips for finding information on the Net By Marc Saltzman

SOMETIMES LOOKING for

quick information on the Web can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. With so many billions of Web pages in cyberspace, finding specific information can be a daunting task.

“Often when I use search engines I get so many irrelevant results that I just give up,” admits a frustrated Lorraine Adams, mother of two and a disability consultant.

Perhaps Adams isn't aware that there are ways to get more out of your favorite search engine, whether that's Live Search, Google, or Yahoo!. A few searching tips, tricks, tweaks, and techniques can help you find what you are looking for in cyberspace quickly and easily.

Follow these 10 suggestions with your favorite search engine.

1 Use the Advanced Search field Almost all search engines have an “advanced search” area that provides Web surfers with more specific options. Here, you can search by an update date, look for Web sites with a specific domain like “.net,” or find Web sites in a preferred language.

2 Search with a phrase To better help the search engine find what you're looking for, offer a sequence of words in a specific order, using quotation marks around the phrase.

For instance, if you're looking for information on the TV show Saturday Night Live, type “Saturday Night Live” into the search window. Without quotations on each end, a search engine will likely look for Web sites containing any of the words separately: Saturday, night, and live.

3 Be specific. If broad search words like car classifieds yield too many results, try more specific words such as used car classifieds or Mercedes classifieds

4 Use alternative search words. If your keywords do not produce

the results you want, try synonyms. Use a thesaurus like Roget's Interactive Thesaurus or Merriam-Webster OnLine to find alternative search words. After all, a dog is also a canine, a pooch, a mutt, a hound, a pet, and man's best friend!

5 Insert a plus or minus sign. This trick usually works in most search engines. Put a plus sign (+) in front of a word that must be found in the search window. For example, city guides + New York will help you narrow the search for city guides for New York only.

Similarly, place a minus sign (-) in front of a word that you do not want to appear in the search results. Typing in python -Monty will allow you to come up with results for snakes and not the British comedy troupe.

6 Just search the domain name. If you know the Web site that you want to search, but aren't sure where the information is located within that site, you can tell your search engine to only search that domain.

7 Explore “Best Of” sites If you're after quality and not quantity, a few search engines provide access to hand-picked “Best of the Web” sites. One example is About.com.

8 Eliminate inappropriate content. If you prefer not to have adult sites included in your search results, activate SafeSearch on the Live Search settings page or on Google's advanced search page. While not 100 percent accurate, this function will eliminate sites that contain explicit content from the search results.

9 Save time with a search toolbar. If you do a lot of searching on the Web, consider downloading the free Windows Live Toolbar or Google Toolbar, which always sit near the top of your Internet Explorer browser window. This way, you do not need to leave the Web site you're on to type in a new query.

10 Specialize your search engine. Photo search for photos, blog search for blogs, and the list goes on.

Christmas Celebration ‘09

The library Christmas party kicked off with a ceremony on exchanging gifts and made more alive by the succeeding raffles and games. The staff also participated in the different Christmas events organized by HRM, PE and OSA, with full support by their most valuable coach and University Librarian, Miss Belen Vibar. The unit won first place in the Belen Making Contest, second for the Christmas Carol performance, and another second place award for Sports.

Library staff training pushed TWELVE EMPLOYEES OF the University Library attended seminars and fora sponsored by library organizations. Nine other library staff members also benefited from an echo seminar conducted by the attendees. The Section Heads also gave talks on library policies and procedures to improve services offered by the library.

University library aligns strategic goals for SY2010 UA&P librarians geared up for the coming school year with their own strategic themes in line with the more general goals of the University.

For the 2010 to 2011 school year, the Library strives to meet standards and improve in the areas of collection development, services, maintenance of the growing book collection, and staff training.

New librarians The library has welcomed Ms. Florence Renee R. Bacay and Ms. Kristi Ma. Fevie V. Macasaet, both with a bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Santo Tomas, as a staff of the Don Emilio Ejercito Library. Ms. Bacay and Ms. Macasaet were respectively assigned to man the Circulation and Reference sections of the library.
