Meet Ms. Nomgcobo Ntsham, the new subject information specialist for Hu-man Sciences. She will be joining the VUT Library on 7th October and will be based on the 2nd floor, main campus library.Her main responsibilities include pro-viding high quality research and ref-erence support to both students and staff members of the faculty of human sciences for purposes of learning and teaching.

LibQuaL oNLiNe survey iN october 2013

Make a difference to the Library! In October 2013, VUT Libraries will be running the second LibQUAL+® survey focusing on all staff members but with a special empha-sis on academic staff members. This is because in the last online survey in 2011, the response level from academic staff was very low and we would like to hear their views and their library and research related issues.

We would like to know if we are meeting your expectations, and where are doing well as the library and possible areas of improvement. We kindly request your par-ticipation and support during this period and our subject information specialists will be ready to assist anyone who may need assistance.

LibQUAL+® is an international web-based survey, developed and refined by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), which measures library users’ perceptions of service quality and identifies gaps between desired, perceived and minimum expectations of service. Let your voice be heard between 07 – 30 October.

FreNcH tv5 moNde room Now opeN

The French TV5 Monde Viewing Room in the Library was opened for the first time to both students and staff on Thursday, 19 September. The official launch will be announced soon.The room is situated at theWest side, 2nd floor, Main campus library, Room H201-34.

The satellite channel offers African international news, sports, documentaries, and movies all in French. Access is free to all Vaal University of Technology (VUT) stu-dents and staff and its operating hours are the same as that of the library. The room is always open for viewing during library hours and it works on first come first served basis. Come watch the African international news in your library.ALL WELCOME

pubLic HoLidays @ your Library

As part of enhancing access to our libraries, the library was open on the Friday, 9th August between 08:00 – 16:00. During the day, 814 clients visited the library. It was also open on Monday, 23 and on Tuesday 24 September during Heritage Day. The library will continue to open during public holidays that fall on week days to allow students more time to use the facilities.

postgraduate FaciLities

Knowledge Commons Room on the 4th floor is the dedicated research space for use by staff involved in research and by masters’ and doctorate students only. It only has 24 computers connected to Internet. In the light of the high demand of the room by the Master’s and Doctoral students and the growing number of postgraduate and advanced diploma programmes, the library has reviewed usage policies and resolved the following:B-Tech Research Room (situated on the 4th floor) will be for use by all B-Tech stu-dents plus all Postgraduate Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses. It has 124 pc’s all connected to internet and postgraduate diploma as well as advanced diplo-ma students will be allowed to type their work and have unlimited time to do re-search. A number of pcs will be reserved for use by this group and they will be able to use their own devices. B-Tech students will continue to utilize this room under the very same usage conditions as before. Diploma Learning Commons on the 1st floor will continue to be utilized by all diploma programme students. The B-Tech research room arrangement will be piloted for 6 months and reviewed if need be.

iNterNatioNaL opeN access week (21 – 26 october)

Please take note that the li-brary will be celebrating In-ternational Open Access Week between 21–26 October 2013.

The Open Access Week is a global event aimed to con-nect the global momentum towards open sharing with the advancement of policy changes on a local level. The academic and research community will have the op-portunity to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they have achieved with their colleagues, and help inspire wider participation in help-ing to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.The VUT Libraries will host a series of events during the week as part of these cel-ebrations. A number of workshops and show and tell sessions will be held for each of the faculties at Main campus library and at our satellite libraries. The highlight of the week will be the publishers’ mini seminar to be held at Sisonke on Thursday, 24 October. Various e-resources vendors will be showcasing their open access journal collections in which researchers can use to publish their research. They will also share with us their vast e-resources collections that are now available for free on open access platforms. Service providers such as Ebsco, SABINET, Elsevier, Spring-erLink, have been invited. To keep up-to-date with new local events around the OA Week 2013, please check the library website regularly.

The SA Media database now contains more than 4,1 million news items and has been greatly enhanced by the increased functionality and features provided by the Sabinet Reference platform: http://reference.sabinet.co.za/sa_media In addition, every article has been processed with Optical Character Recognition software to facilitate full-text searching, thereby ensuring that every word in every article is fully searchable. This greatly increases the possibility of finding relevant information.

The database is now completely current and daily updates are being loaded on the Sabinet Reference platform, ensuring that the database remains completely up-to-date.

The SA Media database covers more than 120 South African periodicals and news-papers from 1977 onwards, and in addition to the full-text searching available, in-dex terms are also assigned to news articles.

A link takes the user directly to the PDF version of the original newspaper article.

Free Legislative access to tertiary institutions

Sabinet has been providing free access to its South African Legislation product, NetLaw, to university law faculties over the past 5 years. By providing this free ac-

cess to law students and lecturers, Sabinet is assisting new and upcoming law pro-fessionals to realise how effective and time saving the usage of reliable online legal information can be in their day-to-day activities.

Currently 14 tertiary institutions are making use of this free access and we would like to invite any tertiary institution with a Law Faculty who does not receive this service free of charge for their law students to please contact us oninfo@sabinet.co.za.
