Due to the Government shutdown, the annual Columbus Day festival could not be held at the Co-lumbus Statue at Union Station. So, the Lido Club and the Casa Italiana Cultural Center at Holy Rosary stepped up to the plate. The entire ceremony was held in Casa Italiana. The wreath laying was held in front of the statue of a youthful Christopher Columbus which had been donated by our Club on the quincentenary anniversary of Columbus’ voyage - October 11, 1992. The statue of a young Columbus is one of 547 statues dedicated to Columbus throughout the world. Pino Cicala was instrumental in getting the venue moved to Casa Italiana as the substitute site.

The Lido Club, was prominently listed as one of the civic organizations supporting the event and current President Phil Finelli placed a floral wreath on behalf of our Club.

Charles J. Bonaparte Ceremony The 53rd annual ceremony honoring Charles J. Bonaparte, the 46th Attorney General and founder of the FBI, was held at the U.S. Department of Justice on August 23, 2013. The program was organized by Lido incom-ing President Francesco Isgro who is the Chairman of the Friends of Charles Bonaparte. The keynote speak-er was Lisa Monaco the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. Ms. Monaco spoke about great strength and pride in growing up in an Italian American family. She addressed her com-ments on Charles Bonaparte and his accomplishment in setting up the FBI. Other speakers included Luca Franchetti Pardo, Deputy of Mission at the Italian Embassy, Judge Francis Allegra and David Margolis, Associate Deputy Attorney General. Maria Marigliano of USAID opened the ceremony with the singing of the national anthems of the United States and the Republic of Italy. Fr. Ezio Marchetto, Pastor of Holy Ro-sary Church delivered the invocation.

Our Club sponsored another Patriot Dinner for wounded warriors at the Knights of Columbus hall in Bethes-da, on September 29, 2013. The evening was a great success. Over sixty servicemen and women with their families were served by Lido members. Mark Miranian of Olazzo’s in Bethesda put together a fabulous Italian meal including some great Italian desserts. Thirty additional meals were sent back to Walter Reed for those servicemen and women who could not attend. The Lido members who served these great patriots were Jerry Truman, Chairman of the Lido Civic Committee, new member Frank Trimboli, and past presidents Charlie Russo and John Urciolo. The Civic Committee plans at least two more dinners in the coming year.

Poker Night was held on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Potomac home of Paul Biciocchi. This year the evening was scheduled on the regular July monthly meeting night. Lido members attended for the fun, food, drink and camaraderie, even if they did not play poker. This format was welcomed by all... it made for an even more festive affair/general meeting. The weather was extremely hot and a few guests even took a quick dip in Paul’s pool. Proceeds from the event benefitted both the scholarship program and our charity account.

Italian Dictionaries donated by Lido by Lucio D’Andrea The Italian program at Mantua Elementary School in Fairfax,VA consists of a half an hour of Italian twice a week. All students from K- 6 grade are taught Italian. The instruction is done in Italian only and teaches not only the language but also Italian culture . The curriculum is based on the Standards of Learning (SOLs) and World Language standards. It is the only on-going Italian language program in the Fairfax County school system. Currently about 950 children are learning Italian at Mantua. My wife, Edvige, and I have been over-whelmed by the enthusiasm demonstrated by the students and the teachers when we have observed them in the classroom. As a member of the OSIA Heritage Lodge in Fairfax I was part of the delegation that has visited Mantua an-nually to present a donation and to witness first-hand the Italian classes. Because of financial constraints, the Lodge was not able to continue making an annual donation. Therefore, I approached your President for help, knowing of The Lido Club’s long-standing reputation in helping with Italian causes, especially the promotion of the Italian language. Phil said “no problem, Lucio”! “Bravo” to The Lido Civic Club for their generous donation towards the school’s purchase of Italian language dictionaries. On November 14, 2013, Phil, Edvige and I presented the donation to the Principal of Mantua, Mrs. Jan-Marie Fernandez and the Italian program teachers, Marina Afentakis, Analisa Iervolino and David Lorenzi. The school was very thankful for The Lido Club’s generous donation.

In Memorium On November 27, 2013 , John Antonelli of Florida and Virginia passed away. John was the son of the late Dominic ( Nick) Antonelli, Jr. who was a long time member of the Lido Club and a major benefactor of our Scholarship Program. He was also the step-son of Gwenn Antonelli, Nick’s wife

Joe Grano, an icon of the Italian American Com-munity in Washington, passed away in November. Joe was born in the Bronx, the son of immigrant parents from Calabria, Italy. He attended St John’s University in Queens, NY as an undergraduate as well as completing the Juris Doctorate (JD) degree. Joe was passionate about Washington. His first venture was to try to save Rhodes Tavern located near the White House, which at the time was the oldest commercial building in the City. Although the tavern was torn down, Joe continued his cru-sade. In 2000, he and several others interested in the Capitol formed the Constantino Brumidi Socie-ty. Joe was determined to get proper recognition for the Italian born “Artist of the Capitol,” Constantino

Brumidi. In 2005, the Society, along with the Lido Civic Club and other Italian American groups, urged Congress to honor Brumidi in the Rotunda on the occasion of the 200th Anniversary of his birth. Three years later, in 2008, Joe and the Society asked Congress to award Brumidi the Congressional Medal of Hon-or for his service to our Country by making our Capitol a truly wonderful building. The medal was formally awarded in 2012 and can be seen in the new Capitol Visitors’ Center. Joe was also largely responsible for uniting Washington, DC and Rome as sister cities. His last effort was to get the US Postal Service to issue a stamp in Brumidi’s honor. Joe will be sorely missed and his untimely death makes it imperative that we continue his lead to promote great Italian Americans and Italian American causes.

Annual Memorial Mass at Holy Rosary Church The annual Lido Club Memorial Mass for deceased members was held on November 10, 2013 at Holy Rosary Church. After attending the Annual Memorial Mass, many Lido members, their families, and widows of deceased Lido members enjoyed a breakfast in Casa Italiana. The breakfast is held in cooperation with the Holy Name Society and its annual Fr. Cesar Donanzan breakfast.

Congressional Night on the Hill Congressional Night was held in the Rayburn House Office Building on September 19, 2013. The Lido Club had hosted Congressional Nights in the early sixties through the seventies and this was the second annual Congressional Night in the renewed series. The event was a great success as the number of members and guests doubled from the last year. Lorry Clavelli set up a Lido history display for the event. This was a great opportunity to meet on an informal basis with members of Congress. The reception committee was chaired by Tom Stallone, working with Robert Giraldi, Pino Argiolas and Jack Derrico. The reception sponsor was long time Lido supporter, Galaxy Control Systems. The committee is looking for a new sponsor for 2014.
