Carl Salzano honored by the Lido Civic Club Carl Salzano , whose grandfather emigrated from Naples, Italy in 1912, was born in Riverside, Cali-fornia. Carl spent his early years in Wiesbaden, Germany and London, England as Carl’s father served in various overseas departments for the US Department of Defense. The family moved to the Washington, DC area where Carl completed high school and then joined the US Navy. After service in the Navy, he earned a Bachelors degree in Eco-nomics from the University of Maryland. He later earned a Master’s degree in Finance from Johns Hopkins University. Carl began his career with Advanced Technology, then Bendix Aerospace, before joining the Booz Allen Hamilton consulting firm in 1986. Carl is now a Senior Partner where he is responsible for all of the firm’s contract formation, market research , business intelligence and security operations. Carl currently serves on a number of Boards, how-ever it was his role as President of the Board at CSAAC that he led a turnaround that restored the organization’s financial health. He guided the or-ganization through significant changes and initia-tives designed to build a lasting legacy program.

Under his stewardship, he expanded the capacity of the Community School of Maryland, commissioned the development of the 30,000 square foot headquar-ters in Gaithersburg, Md that now serves as a training and operation hub for the organization. He instituted formalized fund-raising activities, information tech-nology initiatives, developed a program to attract pro-fessional talent and instituted a financial management system that today has assured the long-term viability of CSAAC. All of his efforts have clearly added sig-nificantly to improved services to CSAAC clients – the ultimate goal.

Jane Ford Salzano is the founder of Community Services for Autistic Children (CSAAC). Jane attended the University of Maryland where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Administration. Jane taught elementary school in Montgomery County for twenty-seven years. One of Jane’s children was diagnosed with autism. At that time, the only possibility available in Mary-land was institutionalization which condemned those stricken with autism to a life of dismal confinement and adverse behavioral controls. Unwilling to accept this fate for her child, Jane set out to change the method of care and improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with autism. After ten years of foundation work getting legislators, educators and administrators to change the way they think about autism, Jane founded CSAAC residential services in 1979. CSAAC’s mission is “to en-able individuals with autism to reach their highest potential and contribute as confident individuals to their community” with CSAAC providing those individuals with education, training, employment and recrea-tion in a community-based living environment. Jane’s dream today has become the largest and one of the most innovative autism service providers in the United States. CSAAC touches the lives of countless families as it serves over 300 individuals with au-tism in our community. CSAAC goes the extra mile with intensive early intervention helping to prepare the individual for entry into the public school system as well as provide in-home programs for training the parents and other sibling to understand and ease the overall family stress. The residential program for adults serves over 120 clients in 52 scatter-site residences in Montgomery County. CSAAC is also credited with establishing the first vocation program for autistic individuals in the United States. Under this program an adult with autism is placed in a work environment with a trained counselor, who is responsible for teaching the individual the job as well as monitoring production and behaviors. Busi-nesses such as Home Depot, Shoppers Food Warehouse, TJ Maxx, Todd Allen Printing, the Gazette Newspaper have opened their doors to these individuals for jobs in our community. Jane remains an active member of the CSAAC Board of Directors and is a mentor to countless parents and children affected by autism. She continues to give public testimony on legisla-tive matters as well as assisting other communities in developing similar models to CSAAC.

The last event of the evening was the announcement of the Lido Club scholarship winners from last Spring. Lorry Clavelli, co-chairman of our scholarship committee, announced the seven winners two of whom were able to attend the gala as guests of the Club. Tessa Tripodi and Anthony Maschek (see photo - right) were then asked to come up to the podium for a well deserved round of ap-plause. It is the Scholarship program that benefits from the proceeds of the Past Presidents’ Night gala and silent auction. The evening ended with more dancing, cocktails and for members to enjoy the company of other gala guests and friends.

The Lido Civic Club raised $11,000 for Building Homes for Heroes through member donations that were matched by the club and a generous $5,000 contribution by Charlie Russo. Motivated by Charlie's generosity Lido member, Jerry Truman, took it a step further by hosting a dinner event at his home on January 28th, raising an additional $4,550. Lido members Jerry Truman, Charlie Russo, John Urciolo, Carmen Facciobene, Anthony Canta-lupo, Anthony Solazzo, Tom Stallone, Tom Regnante and Carl Salzano were among the 60+ guests that enjoyed an evening filled with great food, wine and an informative speech from Tony Sigillito, Director of Building Homes for Heroes. It was an event attended by both members and their wives.

Scholarships Awarded

At the January meeting, Lido Civic Club chair, Tom Caruso proposed and the general membership approved donations to two local charity events. The Club approved a $3,500 expenditure to be the prime sponsor for a Patriots Dinner at the Washington Golf and Country Club. This event benefits wounded active servicemen and women who are recuperating at Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington, DC. Soldiers and their families are transported from Walter Reed and treated to an evening of cocktails, dinner and entertainment Over 80 service men and women get to enjoy good company, food and a night out with family members with Lido couples serving as table hosts. After the dinner, the adults, and especially the children, enjoy “building your own - skies the limit” ice cream sundaes. Lido salutes these courageous men and women and are proud to be a sponsor of this event. The Club also approved a $3,000 expenditure to the Excel Institute. This is an organization, now in it’s 10th year, that trains the underemployed and unemployed for jobs in the high demand, high paying field of automotive technology. In addition, it fosters change in the community through self empower-ment, education and workforce development by offering affordable and accessible job skill training.
