Principal’s Report

Even though we do not have much bullying at this school – although many call any dispute between students bullying – we take any hurtful behaviour seriously.

This is why we have held a number of learning opportunities for students during the National Day of Action

against Bullying and Violence.

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are

not defined as bullying.

Any aggression or bullying is unacceptable and at Lightning Ridge Central School every report of this type of behaviour is followed up!

Any time a student or parent reports an incident of aggression the first question asked is “Who did you tell?”

The usual answer is “no one!” It is important to TELL AN ADULT STRAIGHT AWAY!

Ongoing disputes, fights or bullying can have a lasting effect on students and we want to help straight away.

Please do not leave it for a week to report. This makes it much harder to resolve.

What do staff do? Every case is different and our response is designed to help the students resolve the issue. This involves support, counselling and if necessary consequences for those involved. We always do something to help and we do not stop until the issue is resolved. We never make a fuss or publicly embarrass students so our work will only be visible to those involved but we do our best every time because we know how important it is for students to be safe, settled and focused on learning every day at school

because…. Every Day Counts.

The other side of this issue are the vast majority of students who are caring and supportive and are good

friends who help guide their friends out of trouble. Last week one Yr. 9 student was having a bad day and,

being upset, was making some bad choices. I was really proud to see three students talking to the girl and

encouraging her to cooperate and behave appropriately. They were able to achieve this and the issue was

resolved quickly allowing everyone to get back to their learning.

This was a very courageous, mature, sensible, caring and compassionate thing for students to attempt and

they were brilliant. I’m sure the girl thanked them for their help when she realised how silly she was being.

RIDGE KIDS CAN DO ANYTHING !!!

Deputy Principal’s Report K - 12 Cross Country will be held in Week 10 starting from the soccer oval, all students

MUST have a walking note to attend. If you have not completed this permission slip

please contact the front office.

Students in Year 12 should be preparing for their Half Yearly Exams. Exams will be

conducted during the last week of this Term.

During Week 11 Students in Year 11 will be completing a mandatory program called ‘Crossroads”.

Crossroads has been developed to address some of the social and personal issues for young people in

school today. This program provides young people with an opportunity to discuss issues which are

important to them and to develop skills, action plans and strategies for managing issues that they may

confront in their lives. More information will be coming home in regards to this program.

On Thursday 12th April the International Grammar School will, once again be at Lightning Ridge Central

to give 2 musical performances. The IGS music students will be journeying to regional NSW, supporting

the Royal Flying Doctor Service and we were lucky enough to have them visit us once again. The

students play a range of musical instruments and if we are lucky some of our students will be able to

participate in the performances. Performances will be held in the gym at 9:15am and another at

10:00am, parents are most welcome to attend, please sign in at the office as usual.

This Fortnights PBL focus is

Lightning Ridge Central School share a Positive Behaviour for Learning focus with our

Students each fortnight. Students who show exceptional PBL values are rewarded

throughout the year with excursions, special activities and treats.

Library Report

This week the LRCS Reading Challenge finishes: Thursday 22nd March. The party for

students who complete the challenge and presentation of certificates will be on Monday

26th so lunch will be provided on that day.

I will be attending the Children’s Book Council of Australia NSW Branch Conference next week. It’s theme

is Anticipate! Appreciate! Applaud! The Shortlist 2018. I haven’t been to this conference and am looking

forward to enhancing my knowledge of current quality literature and being around like minded people

celebrating the 2018 Shortlist. I read the publications produced by the NSW CBCA and relate strongly to

their ethos but actually listening to the Speakers and being around book sellers who have a good

knowledge of what they are selling will be exciting. I am anticipating it will be fun. I appreciate that the

school is sending me on this Professional Development and I will be with others to applaud the good works

of others. It is also a great time to network and find out which authors and illustrators are interested in

coming to Lightning Ridge Central School in the future.

Students in Stage 3 are loving being read to in preparation for next Term’s visiting author. We need to get a

background to the type of writing that John Heffernan does and the reading of Spud is certainly doing this.

Students can relate to the death of an animal and I am emotionally connected to this too. When reading a

book it is good to let children know that words can make you feel something. I was ten when a man killed a

dog he had hit in his car. The image has never left me, nor have his words, nor my mother’s reaction and

her follow up to this incident. Students shared their experiences of dogs in their lives. Most have empathy

for sadness in other’s lives and can relate to the feelings you have when you own and care for a pet.

Stage 2 became very skilled at finding books in the library after searching on their Oliver library search

Orbit. They have done this with a partner and I chose their partner so that one helped the other and taught

new skills. This worked well and I was pleased to see the teaching happening.

Stage 1 and ES1 are still enjoying the Meg and Mog series. Meg on the Moon created a lot of interest when

we looked at Buzz Aldrin landing on the moon on the Smartboard with Google images.

I liked reading the MCB sign informing us when Drum Beat was on. With the Easter break coming up soon,

cooking and reading recipes is always fun. I know there is plenty of activity around the Ridge and I hope

you have time to enjoy this with your kids. Use opportunities to find reading in your time. There are flyers

with what’s happening around town. I am going to read the Race book at the Ridge Races!

Aaron Walsh Yr 11

Lily is a kind and helpful student who always tries her best. She is an enthusiastic

participant in all classroom activities and she always encourages and supports the

contributions of others. Lily strives to produce quality work and shows fantastic

leadership skills when participating in group activities. She consistently follows our

school turtle goals and is a valued member of our class. Well done, Lily!

Allira has had a fantastic start to 2018. She is a kind and responsible students who has

been a great role model to her peers. Allira has been working exceptionally hard in

regards to her schoolwork and she is always happy to give others a helping hand. She

has helped create a respectful classroom environment by complimenting her

classmates on their efforts. Keep up the great work, Allira!

Aaron is an excellent role model for LRCS. He is polite, punctual and always in uniform.

Most impressive is Aaron's work ethic and commitment to his studies. He always tries

his best, asks for feedback for work submitted and then applies this feedback to

improve his final product. He is always happy to be in class and has an excellent

attitude. All of Aaron's teachers are impressed with his consistent application to his

studies. Well done Aaron!

Yuwaalaraay is the dialect of the Lightning

Ridge area. The name of the language and

Aboriginal people of the Balonne River Region.

Yuwaalaraay is connected linguistically to

Gamilaraay, the language of the Gamilaroi/

Kamilaroi people.

The language area extends across north west

NSW on the Barwon River into south west

Queensland along the Narran, Culgoa and

Balonne Rivers. This area takes in the

communities of Hebel, Dirranbandi, and

St George, extending south towards Goodooga, Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Collarenebri.

start work on their assessment task in week 8, and will have two weeks to

complete the task. As you can see by the photo, we take learning seriously!
