English to German AutomotiveTranslations
This was sent to me without attribution and so I do not know towhom it may be attributed. It did however provide me with a fewchuckles and hopefully will amuse you as well. If I ever find outwho the author is I will gladly give them credit and thanks forbrightening my day.
To help you read these translations you must understand that in
German the "ie" combination is pronounced as "ee" and the "ei"combination is pronounced as "eye". Also, German is alanguage which strings multiple short words together to createone new long word. Enjoy!

ADAM MORTIMER: OPEN-WHEEL RACE DIRECTOR
His dyed blond hair and earring make himlook somewhat of a vague Jacques
Villeneuve. That, or you can imagine himvaulting berms on a motocross.
Racer and dealer-Adam Mortimer loveskarts. That's how you probably know himin this club. "I want to see a local clubrunning safe, ASN sanctioned kartingevents," he said recently. That's why he'sthis year's open-wheel race director.
He's been working on Formula Ford 1600and Atlantic racing cars for 15 years withhis father now. For the past six, he's beenracing karts. Just one or two races a year,starting in small four-stroke Hondas, untillast year. That's when he graduated to an80cc shifter kart, winning the NationalCapital Karting Club championship, andplacing fourth at the OKRA CanadianGrand Nationals at Shannonville. As well,he raced a FF1600 in the B class at theCanaska Cup for the past two events,placing just off the podium in each of hisraces.
When he's not around race cars, he'saround road cars-Mortimer works atDonnelly's Ottawa Ford.
JEREMY HAMILTON:CLOSED-WHEEL RACE
DIRECTOR
"I'm not doing this for recognition," states
Hamilton. "People can share theirknowledge and experience." Which iswhy he chose to take the responsibility ofbeing the MCO's closed-wheel racedirector.
He admits he's a neophyte and that he hasa lot to learn. But he joined because hesaw others, like himself, with somethingto share. And he wants to make it easierfor other club members to share what theyhave to offer.
"I'd like to see more driver training eventsfor members and the community. They're
good things."
Hamilton became a member in 1996,crewing with his uncle, Len Clue (anotherMCO member), and others. In 1998, hebegan driving in the Ontario ChallengeCup. That same year, he won the MCO'srookie-of-the-year award. He is currentlyClue's crew chief and third driver.
Last year, he was an instructor at theMCO's winter driving schools, and heenjoyed the experience tremendously."Racing excites me," he says with a widesmile.
When he's not racing, you can findHamilton learning industrial design atCarleton University.
Chris HolmstenSolo Competition Director
Chris Holmsten joined the club because,he figured, he needed to. Let's retrace the
steps: He gets his aunt's car for his sixteenthbirthday. Now being a car owner, he becomesinterested in cars, especially Porsches. He is involved in an accident, andfigures his driving can improve. At a Porsche parade in Mt-Tremblant,he witnesses Solo II for the first time.
So then last year, Holmsten joined theMCO to compete in Solo II, improve hisdriving skills, and maybe see a Porsche ortwo. But why join the executive?
"I want to be a Formula One engineer,"
says Holmsten. "I want experience inmanagement and in organising events.And I want to pick up some technical anddriving skills along the way."
Indeed, Holmsten is hoping to study race-car engineering at Oxford University inEngland, after he graduates high schoolthis year. (At 18, he figures he's"probably the youngest director in theMCO ever.")
He admits if he's accepted, he won't beable to complete his term as director.Before that happens, Holmsten plans to
use the Link and word-of-mouth to raiseinterest in Solo II. He wants to hear fromSolo competitors too: "I want their input,because I want that input to effect change.But still, I don't think people should takeSolo II racing too seriously. It should befun."

director
Basil Chiu joined the club as a requirement forhis PR education in October of 1999. Hestayed because he enjoyed, and continues toenjoy, the administrative challenge.He usually drives a 1993 Mercury Topaz, butat times, takes his brother's 1999 Mercedes230 SLK w ithout asking.
He's been interested in cars since a youngchild, for their visual appeal. Friends, hisbrother's stack of Car&Driver magazines,courses at university, and his love of drawingcombined that interest into a passion.Eventually, Chiu joined the Jim RussellRacing Drivers' School in 1996 as a "Race-Team M echanic," where he drove the school's1986 Autosport Basi Formula Ford 2000 race
cars.
During an unsuccessful attempt to join theranks of professional car racing, Chiu wasadvised to get a public-relations education, bythe then-head of the Molson Indy. He iscurrently finishing that education atAlgonquin College.
After he finishes his PR diploma, Chiu wantsto work in creative advertising. When his lifesettles, he wants to race professionally, and,
jus t maybe, use his PR skills to make a fewextra bucks hunting for sponsors for otherracers. In the meantime, he may take his
Topaz for a rally, since it's on its last legs.
Says Chiu of his work ethic: "I might workslowly, I might stop and look around me, andI might even change my goals, but I nevergive up."

Bimm ering aroundEurope
in a diesel!by A .C. Gullon
Many of you will remember (I hope! Ihope!) my talk on road safety at our
May meeting. In June/July that pre-sentation took me 'round the world(Korea, Australia, India, Germany)and in Oct/Nov back to Europe forthree weeks courtesy of BMW whowanted me to do the talk at a special'BMW Showcase' during a 'cars andcomputers' conference in Torino, Ita-ly. When I mentioned at the Octobermeeting that BMW had promised mea car for those three weeks a 'voicefrom the back of the room' (probablyMike Lowe) hollered that I should berequired to report on the experiencefor the Link.
On the way over I wasn't at all surethat the trip had enough motor-sportcontent for a Link article but eventstook a couple of interesting turns
Picking up the vehicle in Munich Ispent the first week at BMW HQ,with a side trip for an automotive con-ference in Dresden. Late Friday after-noon I lit out for a looksee on theexpressways of Holland via the BlackForest (mother-in-law lives 30kmnorthward of Lahr), France, Luxem-
bourg and arrived in the Liege area ofBelgium shortly after noon Saturday.Due entirely to the 'huma' (horseshoeup my a**) I was able to locate theBelgian police officer with whom Ispoke in '96! (one of the five men-tioned in the May talk) He has retiredto devote himself full-time to amateurmotorsports. He's currently VP of thelocal club and we hope to exchangeprogram info to mutual benefit.Moreover on the way to his home Itook a wrong turn and found myself
(the 'huma' again) on one of the hill-climb courses that I raced in the '60's!The next week was again spent in
the Munich area and again I left lateFriday headed for Torino this time.Because I hadn't seen the Italian auto-stradi for over 30 years I took theroundabout way via the eastern Alpsand Venice with a further detour for apilgrimage to Maranello. This timehowever the 'huma' fell out and I was
unable to locate the Ferrari factory inthe hour I had allotted.
At the Torino conference howev-er,with the 'huma' firmly back in place, ayoung engineer at the Ferrari boothprepared me a floppy with a mapshowing the way to the factory, themuseum (Galleria Ferrari) and theFiorano test track. [They are all close
together in the northwest corner ofMaranello on the road leading to thetown of Formigine.] The street lead-ing to the track has been renamed ViaG. Villeneuve and there is a smallbust of Gilles on the corner. If you'regoing to the museum however, planon a couple (at least) of very worth-while hours and bring a wheelbar-row of lira if you want somethingfrom the souvenir shop.
That young engineer, by the way,provided me with a great anecdote forfuture talks (on distraction as THEcause of accidents) when he pointedout that Michael never has a problemwhen dicing with other drivers but hasfallen off the road a couple of timeswhen he was alone in the lead andallowed his mind to drift away to oth-er things.
Eh? What's that? What did I thinkof the BMW diesel? Oh yeah! Well, itwas the first diesel I had driven sincethe '60's (military staff cars inEurope). There was plenty of powerbut neither diesel smell nor diesel
smoke nor diesel rattle. I put 5800kmon the car, a 320 station wagon, injust 10 days of driving and it wasevery inch (centimeter?) a BMW. Infact I told the BMW guys that theonly way I could be sure that they hadactually given me a diesel was that itkept going after I had filled the tankwith diesel fuel!

MCO president, Ronald "the SnakeWoltman, is no stranger to many ous, having been a member since 1968
Soon after becoming a member, Woltman became the editor of this publication. He did this for several years, awell as writing a weekly motor sportcolumn for the Ottawa Journal, durinthe 70s. He has held every position othe executive council, save the treasurer's, at least twice.As a competitor, his driving recordbegan like many MCO membersentering club rallies and slalombefore moving on to dry track racingThere, he raced everything, includin
a Datsun 2000, Formula Fords, Formula Atlantic, go-karts, and stockcars. He has held both CASC andASN national licenses at one time oanother. His first street cars included 1958 MGA and an Austin Healey3000.Now, Woltman is found co-ordinating, more than driving in, racingevents. For the last 10 years, he haused his public-relations skills as aASN official in national and professional racing series, like the North
American Touring Car Championship. Somehow, he has still foundtime for grassroots events: instructoat MCO lapping days, clerk of thecourse at MCO races, and check-poinduty at rallies, (when he hasn't beelost).In 1999, he received a specia"services award" at the MCO's fiftietanniversary banquet for his over 3years of passion and dedication fothe club and the sport.
