As spring brings the new, so it must also

bring change. In this case, we (at the Link)

have lost the valuable help of Bev Millar

and Ken Baird in getting the Link out to

    the MCO members.

Ken would like to be able to concentrate

on his race vehicles. I believe he has built

(or is still in the process of building) 2

trucks for the 2001 ANCA ProTruck

series. More information is available at

    me.html.

A huge thanks goes out to both of them for

the very laborious task of addressing,

stamping, folding, stuffing, and finallymailing out the roughly 150 copies of the

Link that are mailed every month. After

trying it myself resently, I can attest that

this task can chew up more than a few

    evenings!

    PRESIDENT'S REPORT

In the beginning God said let's lead withsome positive news. Former PresidentJohn Blouin has endured an almost com-plete refit of his heart pipes (some mightsay that was not the problem), and is well

on his way to being his ornery self! BravoJohn. Btw, my son said you willed me allyour 510 parts before they knocked yourlights out!

Following in the same vein, I am delight-ed to announce the appointment of J.R.Fortin as our new Vice-President; and JimMorrow of rally fame, now sitting as yournew rally and RSO representative on theexecutive. Gentlemen, thank you.

Alas, there is a down side to these devel-opments. Dave Butler, member sincebefore the widespread proliferation ofdreaded front-drive autos, has relinquished

the role of VP and rally director due towork commitments. Clearly, Dave has hispriorities misplaced, however, I know wecan count on Dave to continue to serveMCO honourably and admirably as he has'lo these past many years. Thank youDavid.

AUTORAMA is April 6 - 8 at LansdownePark. MCO is going to be there. Stilltime to contribute your timeplease seeRob or me. Thank you to all you havevolunteered (this is the International Yearof the Volunteer), especially those of youhave provided cars for the show. To wit,Mike Merriam, Adam Mortimer, PatWeightman, and Lee Racicot have steppedforward. Come out and support your club.We are in the Aberdeen Pavillon.

Our June 23 and 24 school/lapping week-end at Shannonville Motorsport Park istaking great shape. In fact, we are as

booked fuller than Planter's has nuts! But,

we do have a waiting list. LINK editorRichard Muise is minding registration andis still taking names for the waiting list.

Bob Armstrong has graciously steppedinto the role of Chief Instructor replacingNigel who regrettably decided to stepaside. If you are qualified, and are inter-ested about assisting as an instructor, please see Bob or me. Help isREQUIRED in many areas. You wantFUN, this is the place and weekend.BELIEVE ME. We are NOT going to bedoing the five-headed instructor routine, however!

I am happy to report I have made threetrips to Toronto since Apollo 13 blew up(the SSEi) without any untoward inci-dents. Kanata to the CASC HQ on Petroliais now under 3h45m.

    See you all soon, rpw

    My ExcellentAdventure with

    Mungoby Jim Morrow and

    Jaak Laan

Well, the 2001 Yokahama WinterRally Series (YWRS) is over! TheMCO was well represented with, bymy count, six teams competing atvarious events. We even had a teamjoin the MCO the day before thesecond event so they could competefor points and trophies.

The 2001 YWRS was comprised ofthree events in Ontario and one inQuebec. The supporting sponsor inthe series is Subaru Canada. Due totheir contingency program for Subaru

drivers, 19 of 40 cars entered for thefinal two events were Subarus. This isa TSD series, run (as one organizerput it) so as to minimize our exposureto daylight. The roads are a delight forthe Rally enthusiast and success in theseries requires a combination ofdriving skill, sharp navigation andtiming skills, and a strong, competentcar.

Jaak Laan and I had run the series lastseason, Jaak driving his silent blackHonda Civic smoothly and quietlythrough the night and yours trulynavigating. Because it worked sowell, we decided to change thingsaround. I flew my noisy black SubaruImpreza, howling through the nightand Jaak navigated, trying to hit theresets on the Terratrip computer as weskittered about the stages.

Of this decision, Jaak noted: "Havingwatched navigators from the driver'sseat on many rallies, it was with morethan mild trepidation that I committedto navigating for Jim. I knew he was akeen competitor. He made noisesabout how our expenses would bepaid by our winnings, etc."

I knew that we might have a problemwhen Jaak showed up with enoughclothing, camping gear, food andemergency bits and pieces to fill boththe trunk and the back seat - but moreof that later. I was just so thrilled to beable to go out and play Rally Driver. Imean we had the noisy bouncy car,the Rally Computer, the Big Lights

(although Jaak had to keep remindingme to turn them back on) and mynavigator never got sick.

Rallying, as Jaak says, is a team sport.Whether in World RallyChampionships or local TSD events, neither the driver nor the navigator

can do it alone. One of the hardestthings I ever did was to focus just onthe driving and let my navigatornavigate. It's hard to accept that, asone pro Rally driver said, "Thenavigator is the sharp tool in theshed." Trust is critical, according toFabrizia Pons (co-driver/navigator forPierro Liatti in the 555 Subaru WorldRally Team): "If there was no trustbetween driver and co-driver, rallieswould be very slow."

Each rally ran for about eight or nine

hours of driving. The stages went byso quickly! The transits from fun roadto fun road seemed interminable. Butwe were busy; here's Jaak's story:

Learning to use the rally computerwas a learning experience. By that, Imean we read the instructions, Jimprepared cheat cards for me (mehaving little retention ability understress and there being danger inpunching wrong buttons resulting inloss of data) and we had to use it afew times. After the second event and

while I was trying to catch up onsleep, I had a spontaneous vision ofnew functionality. Yes! First rally, theaverage speed function of thecomputer lay dormant. Second rally, Istarted zeroing the odo at eachinstruction (a couple of hundred timesa night). Third rally, myaforementioned delirious brainstormresulted in me hitting the rallycomputer freeze button twice forevery instruction (about 400 hundredtimes a night now) so that we endedup knowing exactly where we were

(as tire spin, and there was a lot ofthat, didn't have as much effect ondistances over 1 or 2 km, although theinstructions seemed to be moreinaccurate with each rally...go figure)and also knowing our instantaneousaverage speeds.

Checkpoints flubbed that up but thoseare usually near the end of sectionswhere everything zeros anyway so thedamage to our knowledge base waslimited. Of course, knowing how fast

we needed to go now also meant thaMr. Driver had to try to get to thosaverage speeds...79 km/h on icysnowy cottage roads AVERAGE wapretty challenging often. Mr. Driveworked very hard and the car spenalmost all of the nights sidewaytrying to match those speeds, whil

Mr. Navigator tried to keep up witbutton-pushing and not missing turnand calculating those darn calculatetime-ins for end of legs andcalculating average required speedfrom times given.

I did indeed find it hard work, but oso much fun. At checkpoints I woulrun back from the checkpoint car anwatch the front wheels gentlysteaming as the brakes slowly coole- the heat kept snow from building onthe front wheels at least. Our styl

wasn't what I remembered fromwatching the WRC cars. I remembehearing Nicky Grist calling out to MrMcRae as they came up to a particulacorner: "Don't Cut." Our style wamore like: cut on a tight right-handerlaunch off of a large stone or bouncthrough the ditch, hear the 'bonk' aJaak's head hit the window or roofand then hear him call "Don't Cutdammit!" What fun!

Jaak resumes: "Half way through thfirst event I started to begin enjoyin

calling out the instructions. There is rhythm, a pattern that begins toemerge as you discover by doing, thadoing it by rhythm takes away thestress of figuring out how to calthings out. Calling out the cautionwas pretty neat, although it took me while to understand the superioperformance potential, particularlbraking and cornering grip on ice thaour car and tire combination offeredso that I nagged a bit too much at thbeginning as we headed deeeep intsome caution areas.

One interesting thing I sussed wathat having a car and driver that coulmaintain average speeds and beinghigh up the run order away from trufirst-timers meant we saw few peoplthroughout the nights. As you movup the run order, teams understand thneed to maintain speeds indicated anthat means you neither catch up noget caught too often.

Capital Karting -Gone But Not Forgotten

    By Sam Mandia

The sign on the door said: Real. Fast. Fun. I would like tovouch for all of that. The first time I heard about it

(Karting indoors) I was skeptical about the whole thing. Iremember going in for the first time and looking the placeover. The first thing I noticed was how clean everythingwas.

The staff was also very polite and courteous. That was 20months ago, and a lot has happened to MCO and me. Iwas asked to organize a fun night at Capital Karting and itwent very well. The MCO League began shortly thereafter. We ran 5 nights every 3 weeks for 3 seasonalsessions. The drivers ranged from long time members tofriends of members.

To see all the smiling faces after each race was gratifying,

and to see the competitive nature of some people was"interesting". Especially seeing Rob with helmet andgoggles, the look on Richard's face, the "look" in Jay'seye, the quiet yet menacing style of Jeff, Ian, Mark, Eric,Chris, Basil. The non-members also fit the mould of racedriver as well, Marc, Bud, Dennis, Luc, Louis-Phillip,Pierre, and Henry. Sorry if I missed anybody.

The racing was, as the ad said, just like the real thing.Right down to the noise and the smell. I live close by andwas a frequent visitor, so much so that I had a lot of mypersonal photos hanging on the wall. Their place lookedan awful lot like my place. The staff was the thing thatmade the place so special, and so very friendly. The two

owners Marc and Robert Gaudet have become personalfriends of mine, and they were so impressed with theClub, and its members they said that they would like to

    join us.

Yes, the racetrack is gone, but not forgotten. The nexttime I strap on my F-1200, I will think of all the times Ispent practicing the basics of car racing in in a 5.5 H.P.Go-kart. OH yes I forgot to mention Bud, and I just gotour own Kart.

    See you at the races.

That only happens in that situationwhen somebody makes a mistake, goes off road or misses a turn andhad to catch up. As most peoplewho do this more than a few times

end up wanting to do well, theygenerally stay on the road too.Which brings up a memory of anAudi Quattro Coupe that wastrying to make time and wascatching us up. As we crested arise at speed and panic stopped toattempt to make the turn to the leftonto a new road, said Quattroskidded sideways past us (on theleft) and deftly avoided the ditch. That instance of pucker factor wasa little yucky.

Actually I saw him coming and, after making sure there was nodanger, thought it would be fun toscare Mungo (at night, far fromcivilization and far from help, Jaakgoes away and Mungo comes out).I mean I was trapped in the carwith the guy and he had beenmaking jokes about killing andeating me if I dared to run off theroad.

Jaak again: "Various memorieswill stay with me...jumping off anice crest onto a one-lane bridgewhile pushing the freeze button onthe rally computer was aninteresting new challenge, looking

down INTO the crevasse of 'themother of all frost heaves' (quotefrom the instructions) and trying tokeep my head down for the impactand rebound."

Do you remember how Imentioned that Jaak always filledthe back seat with clothes, sleepingbags and secret rally stuff? Well,we crested a steep rise and therewere two huge frost heaves laidout on the downhill slope leadingto a sharp left. I judged that thiswas the Mother of all Frost Heavesand, given our speed, our chancesat surviving were well below zero, but I didn't tell Mungo as he might

start screaming again. We bouncedawfully high on those two heavesand thinking that we had justbeaten the 'Mother of All FrostHeaves' I said, "Ha, that wasn'tmuch." That's when Mungoscreamed and we launched off ofthe REAL Mother of all FrostHeaves. We were flying nice andstraight and the car was level. Theproblem was that we were indanger of flying straight past theapex into the trees. No, that wasn'tthe real problem, the real problemwas the articles of clothing drapedover my head and the sleeping bagthat kept hitting my shoulder. Wemade it round the corner quitenicely considering that I couldn't

see and Mungo was trying to getthe door open so he could jump.

Actually it was all incredible funand we didn't break the car. That

we did as well as we did is atribute to my Navigator and thefact that the car and tirecombination would make an idiotlook good.

Join us next year when we switchagain and Jaak drives while I ridein the relaxing seat.

Also, join us later this May whenwe run a fun TSD rally over someglorious roads that someone hid

not more than 80 km from myhouse.

Membership:- CASC-OR Board of Directorsdiscussed some club's renewal
