A Newbie Goes to Fabiby Jean MacGillivray

I had wanted to get on the track forsome time, and I got my wish on awarm Friday afternoon in Septemberwhen 14 of us met at Shannonville todo some lapping on the Fabi track.Mike Rouleau generously arrangedthe event.

In addition to Mike and his MazdaMiata, there were two Honda Civics(Jaak Laan and Richard Muise), aPrelude (Chris Holmsten/his (veryyoung) grandfather), two Corvettes(Rick Byrne and J.P. Jr.), two SubaruImprezas (Kirby Dunstan and JimMorrow/me), an Audi Quattro (RobKleins), a BMW 320i (Alex Byrne),an Infiniti (Gord Acorn) and an Escort

Wagon (Denis Savoie). Trackexperience ranged from none, for meand one of the Corvette drivers, tosignificant. After a drivers' meeting toreview the basic rules about passingand maintaining a safe distance, wewere ready to go.

Jim and I shared my stock Impreza, suitably shod with R-compounds(another "first" for me). He drove, Ilistened...there was so much toexperience and so little time.Information overload! I took a break

to review my course map and mullover what he had told me. I evenclimbed up to the top of the bleachersto watch the drivers' techniques. Icould see Jim down below, having aheck of a good time.

I thought back to my previousexperience at Shannonville. Duringthe Canaska Cup weekend, RyanWoltman took me around a few timesin one of the Bytek Beetles. It wasgreat! I had admired his smoothdriving style, which seemed effortless.

Now I had the chance to go aroundmyself and see what I could do.Instead, I was sitting in the pits, studying a darned map and trying toget my mind around this wholebusiness of R-compounds, using thewhole track, lines, braking andacceleration. I could tell this wouldtake a while to figure out. What to do?

Luckily, Jim came in and disturbedmy reverie. We decided that I would

drive and he would coach me throughit. The Fabi track is quite technical, with eight corners and one medium-length straight built into a 2.23-kmloop. I found it both novel andchallenging to use the whole track andaim for the correct lines through thecorners (I especially liked the veryvisible candy-striped turtles). The

corners are very much interdependentso if you get off your line on one, yourrhythm is off for the remainingcorners. It's definitely a challenge tomuster the coordination andconfidence to do a well-executed lap!

Jim said my times were improving, but my mind was on trying to get itright. Only afterwards did it occur tome that I could've hitched a ride withdifferent drivers, or gone and stood inkey spots around the track to watchand learn. Oh well - more ideas for

    next time.

One thing I would like tochange is my seatingposition. With the helmet on,I felt as though my neck wasstretched forward like aturtle. My head was slightlysquashed and the movementin my arms was restricted.I'm sure sitting comfortablymakes you feel more incontrol. Again, I didn't thinkto ask if anyone else had the

same problem and what theywould suggest. But I do knowthat I was more comfortabledriving in a three-hour rallynot wearing a helmet than themuch shorter time I spent on

the track with my head encased in ahelmet and protruding. It was alsointeresting to compare driving on atrack with Solo II and Slush'n'Slide. Ithink I just accepted the head positionin Solo II because the run time was soshort. Now I'd like to find a solution.

In the end, much fun was had by all

and a few of us gathered at theMarysville Sunoco to fuel our carsand ourselves, and to discuss theevening's pleasure. Thanks again,Mike, for making it possible!

    Mike diving for Fabi Corner-1.

    The New MountTremblant

    by R. Bennett Leckie

It has been worth the wait to see the re-newed track.

Friday was warm but overcast, but Nigel

Mortimer (driver #1), Adam Mortimer(son/driver #2), and myself got our firstlook at the new track, on bicycles. A lotof trees have been cut down, along withmoving a lot of dirt, to increase run offareas greatly, which will make the track alot less intimidating. The track surfacehas had over a year to cure, but they haveremoved a lot of the camber and/or cam-

ber changes out of the track. The hump inthe back straight has been lowered, alongwith the approach and departure beingmore gradual. FIA Spec curbing has beeninstalled, replacing the old sharp, tire-cut-ting, car-flipping curbing of old.

The old driving lines have not changedmuch with the exception of Namerow, thelast turn that leads on to the front straight. You still finish your braking on the down-hill, but the corner starts 50ft sooner. It isno longer a smooth 180 degree right turnslowly slopping down to it's exit, followed

by a small dog leg left on the frontstraight. It is now a very sharp right turnthat downs down like a cork screw, fol-lowed by the dog left that is a real turnthat may require braking for faster cars. For pictures of the new track, see theCanadian BMW Club Web Page.

Saturday we were the first group on thetrack, in the rain. "It was a fine day formotor racing." As there were only 3 For-mula Fords entered, all from MotorsportClub of Ottawa, we were added to theFormula Libra Group, with 8 CanadianChamp Lights (Formula Renault with aChrysler Neon motor) and 2 Formula-3cars. The Champ Cars are about 10 sec alap faster, but the sweet sounding F3'swere as much as 30 sec faster. All ourFormula Ford drivers had to watch theirmirrors as you did not know if it was oneor two F3's about to get your heart racing. In the rain Nigel got down to a 2:05 on the

    2.5 mile course.

Nigel's years of racing, of which manylaps were done at Tremblant, allowed himto qualify on the third row, for the after-noon race. Pier Burtot was a few posi-tions back, still learning the track. Adammanaged to out qualify one of the ChampCars, in his first Formula Ford race of2001, but not having a tach was showingin his lap times, as he kept the revs low.

In the Production/Sedan Group Bob Arm-strong in a Nissan NX2000, was fast inthe wet thanks to front wheel drive and

being a Winter Driving Instructor. Thetrack was drying during his qualifyingsession, and one of the rain tires was rub-

bing on a strut, so he had to do a four tirepit stop, but only lost 5 minutes in the 25min session.

As race time approched the sun started toappear, but was it going to be enough todry the new track surface was the ques-tion? Formula Fords in Ontario (CASC-OR) run on treaded Formula Ford Dun-lops, so it would be the same tires wet ordry. Adam and Pier adjusted their brake

bias and front sway bars for a dryer track, leaving the rear bar for the grid, as bothhad cockpit adjustment. Nigel adjust the

brake bias and reset the Penske Shocks, but would have to wait until the grid todecide if he would reconnect both frontand rear sway bars.

The Formula 1200's (FV) were the racebefore us, and started on a wet track, butas the race progressed the line in Name-row started to dry. This left Nigel in moreof a dilemma, but the FV's Race needed alarge cleanup, which gave Herb and I thetime we needed to reconnect the sway-

    bars.

The full dry setup on Nigel's car, gave himthe advantage to easily pull away fromPier and Adam, to win the Formula FordClass. Both Nigel and Pier's lap timesdropped below 2:00 minutes for the firsttime all weekend.

Sunday brought Indian Summer Weather,as people were seen wearing shorts bymid-morning. After partying in OttawaSaturday Night, Adam returned early(1.75 hours) with an electronic tach forthe 1984 Van Diemen.

There was no morning warmup/practice,only a late morning Qualifying Session.

Nigel took the first few laps to help showhis son Adam the line, and both were turn-ing 1:58. Nigel then started to pull awayin the 1985 Van Diemen, with lap timesdown in the 1:53, which Adam could notmatch.

Pier did not complete a single lap in Qual-ifying as he tore all the splines out of hisclutch disc. Pier was ready to load up andgo after Banan towed him back to the pad-dock, but Nigel put the power of Morti-mer Racing to work in the form of Herband I. We changed the disc in about anhour, which included removing the trans-mission and rear suspension to access theclutch pressure plate/flywheel.

As we were the second last race of theday, we now had time to watch some otherraces and wonder the Paddock.

Hamish from Ottawa, driving an Eval wonthe Vintage B Group, keeping a Lotus 11from New England at bay.

Paddocked across from us was a 1934Hudson Super Six Indy Race Car from

Toronto, driven by a driver not muchyounger. He enjoyed driving Tremblantfor the first time. The sound was beautifulfrom an unmuffled straight six, thatweighted 800 lbs of the car's 2200 lbs dryweight.

Another interesting vintage car was theAllard coupe with a BIG V8 completewith hemi heads, fuel injection, with Of-fenizer on the valve covers. You felt theearth move every time the driver got onthe loud pedal.

There were racing MG's, Lotus', Ginetta's,

Sport Racers, Trans Am Camaro & Mus-tangs, etc to be found in the regular Pad-dock, but down on the Skid Pad the Trackowner had a 1984 Ferrari Boxer 512 thatwas modified to compete at the 1984 Le-Mans 24 hour Race. Was it there for showor go?

In the Formula Libre Race Nigel and Pierpassed each other, with Nigel taking thelead in Formula Ford at the end of the firstlap, and then started to pull away withconsistent lap times in the 1:51's. Piercould not match this pace at first, as helost sight of Nigel on the long back

straight, but on the second last lap WendyMortimer recorded a 1:50.9 for Pier togive him the fast lap, Nigel the Class win.Adam got down to a 1:56, which madehim very happy.

The final race of the day was the Produc-tion/Sedan Race with the Ferrari lining upand the back of the field. He passed halfthe field on the first lap, but waited untilthe front straight to pass Bob's NX2000 ashe filled Bob's mirrors coming though

Namerow. Bob finished near the front, and was very happy he chose to come toTremblant, and most of the Drivers, crew, and worker would whole heartily agreewith.

Looking forward to more Racing and Lap-ping at Tremblant next year.

    DATE: Sunday, September 23, 2001

Ken Baird and Main Street Racingkept his points moving up with aFourth place win Capital CitySpeedway from an 8th position. Hehad recovered fast from a bad spininto the wall during practice, probablyfrom oil on the track. They changedthe damaged parts and made it out forthe heat race. The CarQuest ProTruckneeded some setup changes after theheat and they paid off in the Feature. The ProTruck was running well, evenholding its own on a three wide on

Corner One. Both Ken and Matt werepassing Greg Ogilvie after Greg gotloose on Corner Four. Down thestraight the three trucks were side byside and stayed that way on CornerOne. Ken was on the outside so hadthe farthest to go around the corner, but was still with them exiting the turnbut didnt have a good line and lost acouple of places. He regained theseand gained one more before the end ofthe race. Matt Moffitt of North Gowerin the Hanson, Your IndependentGrocer ProTruck 46 won. This was

his first Feature win of the season andhe worked hard for it. Well-deservedwin. Steve Yendall finished Thirdwith great racing, and Steve is still thePoints Leader for the Karson GroupProTruck Series. North GowerDrivers are all in the top of the pointsso it will be fun watching the next two

races, Sunday Sept 30 and Oct 14th tosee the final standings for the 2001Season. All three ProTrucks featuredBob Bilodeau engines so it is great tosee them perform so well and soconsistently.

In the Mini Stocks, Dave Watchornwon the first heat and the feature, and

Martin Walter won the second heat.Things are back to normal, and thepoints race between these two NorthGowerians is going down to the wire.Chris Dunham is still giving these twoa challenge, finishing all three races ineither second or third. This is a Greatseries this year, and the cars anddrivers just keep getting better.ProStock Driver, Earl Wylie was backin the running again, doing okay in the

heat races but getting a well earnedfourth place in the feature. TheProstock 76 is doing well and Earl hashad no problem moving up classesthis season.

Nest Sunday is Double Points Day.Some great racing will be done withso many of the Capital City Speedway

classes having close points. This willbe a fun set of races, and a great wayto spend a sunny Sunday Afternoon inthe Fall.

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGAnnual General Meeting, Tuesday November 6, 2001Proposed By-Law Changes

The Motorsport Club of Ottawa is holding its Annual General Meeting starting after the Regularly ScheduleMonthly meeting starting at 8:00PM on Tuesday November 6, 2001 at Louis' Steakhouse, located at 1682 Cyville Road in Ottawa.

The club executive is proposing the following by-law changes, which will be voted on at the Meeting. The prposed bylaw changes are described below.

MCO is a dynamic and changing club, with various affiliations to sanctioning bodies. In recent years MCO haffiliated with RallySport Ontario (RSO) and directly to ASN Canada FIA for karting. The bylaws must changed to reflect this affiliation with other sanctioning bodies other than CASC-OR.

Change Sections 2.1 and 2.2 to read,

2.2 A Full Member shall be entitled to one (1) vote on any motions presented to the Club. Membership in ASCanada FIA (ASN), Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario Region (CASC-OR), Rally Sport On-tar(RSO) and/or its affiliates and all such membership rights, privileges, and responsibilities shall be ac-cordto any Full Member. As a member of ASN, CASC-OR, RSO and/or its affiliates the Full Members shall be alowed to enter motorsport events at the rate set for such a member by the organizing body.

2.3 A Social Member shall not be entitled to vote on any motions presented except on motions of fee change foSocial Members. When entering motorsport events, a Social Member will not be considered a Full Mem-bof the MCO or CASC and/or its affiliates, and is subject to any restrictions or increased fees established fthat event. Social Membership does not entitle the member to ASN, CASC-OR, RSO, and/or its affiliates priileges.

A complete nominee list for a coming election is currently required to be presented to the executive at the geneal meeting one full month prior to the Annual General Meeting. The proposed change is to allow nominatioup to and including the monthly general meeting immediately prior to the Annual General Meeting. The prposed change to the section is as follows:

    Change Section 5.4 to read,

5.4. At least two (2) months prior to each Annual Meeting of the Club, the Board of Directors shall appointnominating committee of three (3) Club members who shall, not later than the monthly meeting prior to suannual meeting, submit to the Board a list of candidates willing to stand for the offices of President, VicPresident, and Directors. Such list shall include at least one (1) name for each vacancy on the Board to filled at such annual meeting.

In addition, any two (2) members of the Club shall be entitled to submit nominations to the Nominating Committee or the Board not later than the end of the monthly meeting prior to the Annual General Meeting. Sucnominations shall be in writing, signed by the persons making the nomination, and by the person nominateacknowledging his willingness to stand for election.

Quorum numbers are difficult to achieve in our organization. This change proposes a modification to the numbof voting members required to establish a quorum. The change to the section is as follows:

    Change Section 10.6 to read,

10.6 A quorum for the Annual or a Special General Meeting shall consist of (or smalleof the members entitled to vote on the business to be transacted. Each member present at a meeting shahave the right to exercise one (1) vote. Voting shall, save as herein provided be a show of hands, unlessballot is demanded by two (2) members entitled to vote on the question. If such a ballot is demanded, tsame shall be taken in a manner as the Chairperson directs. All questions presented at such meetings, save otherwise provided in these by-laws, or by statute or law, shall be decided by a simple majority of votes. the case of a tie vote, the motion voted on shall be declared as lost.

If the change is approved, an additional vote will be held to choose the number of members and percentage members in good standing required to consist a quorum. The vote will choose from the following options:

    1. 20 members or 17%2. 25 members or 20%3. 30 members or 25%4. 35 members or 30%5. 40 members or 33%

Allowing members to vote by proxy can help the club achieve appropriate numbers for quorum at AnnuGeneral Meetings. The proposed change is to make voting by proxy more accessible to club members breducing the required distance at which club members can vote by proxy. The change to the section is as follow

    Change Section 10.7 to read,

10.7. Only those persons whose permanent residence, as listed in the Club's records, is not situated withinradius of kilometers of the Ottawa Postal Terminal shall be entitled to cast the

vote by proxy at a Special or Annual General Meeting.

If the change is approved, an additional vote will be held to choose the number of members and percentage members in good standing required to consist a quorum. The vote will choose from the following options:

    1. twenty (20)2. thirty (30)3. fourty (40)4. fifty (50)

Your presence at the Annual General Meeting is required to vote on these bylaw changes. Please make eveeffort to attend the Annual General Meeting.

    MCO Rally GroupNews, September 2001

    by Craig Hamm

This column is to inform MCO membersabout activities in the club's Rally Group. There's lots to tell!

Jim Morrow (Rallymaster) and Jodie Shay

(Routemaster) held the Golden Pine Rallyin Golden Lake, NW of Renfrew. General-ly, if you missed it, you really missed it. Itwas a long ride to the venue, but all foundit was worth the investment. At one pointwe were fearful of having more workersthan competitors, but in the end six teamsregistered for a fantastic ride. I worked acheckpoint on a 12km section of incrediblehilly-twisty narrow backroad - with onlytwo inconsequential potholes! The roadswere in great condition and very car friend-ly. See, we don't want to hurt your cars.We also got to use our sexy new retro-re-flective checkpoint boards sporting a coolMCO logo. The president's challenge waswon by Paulo Nunes of SMCC. Let's see ifwe can get this title back to the host clubnext year. Other participants includedLouis Cabardos, who drove 3 hours fromCobourg to compete in our MCO rally in-stead of his own club's rally (PMSC). Theattendance of both Paulo and Louis was astrong endorsement for our efforts inMCORG as Louis is one of the best knownTSD competitors in Ontario, winning lastyear's Yokohama Winter Rally Serieshands down, in a dilapidated, yet reliable'Terdcel'! Several competitors walkedaway with the coveted prize packages -farm fresh free range eggs!

Last year's Lanark County Highlands Ral-ly, by Morrow and Laan, will be run Octo-

ber 20th on what I'm sure will be a gor-ge-ous autumn afternoon. Jim has made nu-

merous changes to last years route, so don'tbother digging out the route book youstashed away. I ran in this event last year, and it was a real blast. Jim is a passionaterally driver, his roads will not disappointthose looking for a challenge. The proceedsfrom this rally will benefit our partner, theLanark County Therapeutic Riding Associ-ation, which helps severely disabled andsick children and adults. Plan for a great

Sunday drive through magnificent countrybefore the short winter days set in and sup-port this most worthy organisation.

Yours truly is nearly done building the"Mississippi Valley Rallye" of approx. 200km, and will be run November 10th atnighttime!! The rally roughly completes aloop around Mississippi Lake and crossesthe river a few times. This rally is suitablefor beginners with a good mix of loose sur-face to tarmac. The roads chosen are verycar friendly. This rally will get some ofyou an early warm-up for the January/Feb-ruary Yokohama winter series. As I did forthe Totally Silly Drive in June, I have tried

to locate my rallies not too far from Ottawato encourage first-timers. The rally startsin Almonte. I will be providing more de-tails as I finalise the organisation.

Jaak Laan's Mangy Moose rally, originallyslated for Dec 8, 2001, will be deferred toMarch 2002. This puts it after the Yokoha-ma Winter Rally Series, and fills a lull inthe 2002 MCO Rally Series schedule. Yes,an MCO Rally Series! Details are still be-ing worked out on a points schedule andevent mix.

Weare looking at running an old version of

the Lanark Highlands Rally in early Janu-ary, as a driving tune-up for the very com-

petitive Yokohama Winter Rally Series. The rally will likely have fewer than usualcheckpoints to allow concentration on the

winter driving. As usual, keep posted details.

As of last night's MCORG monthly meing, we now have three performance rateams in MCO! Greg Brady and SteFrankovitch are competing in the in Raof the Voyageurs (Parry Sound) Sept 29-and the Rally of the Tall Pines (Bancro

Nov 23-25, and Corey Groves and his w

are preparing for a run in Rally of the TPines. Soon to be MCO member, WarHaywood (Maple Leaf Rally Club) is a

preparing a performance VW rally car. Slast year, no performance rally cars, tyear, three!

If you have not looked at the new MCwebsite Forums and Events calendar, go it soon. I have learned that the old exprsion "ask and you shall receive" worwith Rob Microys, our capable web mastRob has done a great job at supporting tonline needs of the Rally Group. Currely, the rally forum seems to be the most ative, yet I wonder why most of the postin

are from myself and a short list of otheTherefore, I encourage ALL of you to atively engage the website and participatethe club discussions. MCORG is not mrally group, it's YOURS.

Finally, MCORG has changed the locatiof it's monthly meetings. We've movfrom the informal pub atmosphere tomore formal meeting room in the EmerPlaza Branch of the Ottawa Public Libraon Merivale Road. For a small fee, we a great space to hold our discussions, loaof free parking, a moderately central loction next to many restaurants, and aud

visual equipment for watching videos after the business portion of the meetinAll are welcome, even non MCO membewhether you are curious about rallying, are fully involved.
