    Editorial Exhaust

The peak of summer activities is here. Just

two weeks after MCO put on the track

school at Shannonville, we were back to

host (with Twin Lakes) the Canaska Cup.

This weekend was special for me, it was

my first event working as a marshal. Some

details about my time in the Pace Car is on

page 7. I've also just signed up to work the

BARC weekend at Mosport, followed by

the ALMS weekend Aug 19th. This is

such a great way of getting involved, and

meeting lots of new faces from around the

    region.

We've had two Solo-II events in July

leading to some great racing. For the July

15th event, the top 25% of drivers (i.e. 10of 42) were separated by only 2.3% in

PAX time. MCO also put on the second

Ground School at Jetform park. JR Fortin

handled the job of Chief Instructor, and he

    ran a tight event.

As I mentioned last month, I have a new

addiction, track time! Since the school 6

weeks ago, I managed to squeeze in a few

laps as part of the Pace Car activities at

Canaska Cup. But the best was 2.5 hours

of lapping July 28th, arranged by Jensen Ip

and Pascal Sergent. It was a blast, even if

it meant for a late night before the Solo-II

    event the next day!

SOLO II Alumni Event Aug 26thby JR Fortin

I showed up last Sunday at Jetform Park to watch oursolo II event, as always it was well run and well attend-ed, but also as usual, many of the guys I used to runagainst were not competing, and neither was I. I knowthat many have moved on to Solo I, Karting, and racingbut many seemed to have hung up the goggles for awhile. The torch is still being carried by people likeLawrence King, Bennett Leckie and Craig Seko, buteven they are relative newcomers to the MCO Solo IIscene. And so, the Aug. 26th Solo II will be an Alumnievent. Please prep. your cars and pass the word. It willbe great to see people and cars that have not been out infive or ten years.

    Hope to see you there!

    The "New" Mont-Tremblantby Craig Seko

While MCO members were busy organ-izing or driving at the Canaska Cup atShannonville, I went to the first event held

on the full track of the "new" Mont-Trem-blant. The event was a driver educationweekend put on by Rennsport, the localregion of the Porsche Club of America(PCA), in early July 2001.

    WOW!

My first impression of the new facilitywas that the old paddock appears smaller -although more useable. The paddock isnow crushed gravel except for the skid-pad, which is unchanged. The paddockruns flat all the way from where the oldturnaround used to be to the victory podi-

um in front of the cafeteria and beside thewashrooms. The washrooms remain, butare not operational until new sewage sys-tems are installed. The old cafeteria is stillthere, but most of its driveway is gone -the paddock has been widened. The lane-way running around front of the wash-rooms is now the exit from pit lane intothe paddock. The entrance to pit lane is atthe other end of the paddock - near Name-row.

Pit lane and the pit area are extensivelychanged. The hot pit is now very wide, reminiscent of Watkins Glen. Pit-in is onthe outside of the (new) Namerow, andpit-out is at the top of corner 2, with theconcrete barriers like those at Mosportvery much in evidence. The staging areabehind the tower was not finished when Iwas there. The tower is being renovatedand enlarged, and now has a clear view ofNamerow.

Namerow, corner 14, remains the"signature turn" of Mont-Tremblant.However, from a driving perspective, it isno longer Namerow, it is Namerow plusPaddock Bend (corner 15). Paddock Bendis a real turn now, as the main straight isnow wider and perhaps farther "in" (away

from the paddock). The two turns form an"S," so the line through Namerow must setup Paddock Bend. Paddock Bend itself isa fairly straightforward flat corner. Name-row is not.

The old Namerow is gone, a victim of theneed for runoff versus rock. The new oneretains much of the physical look of theold one. However, the angles, elevations, and camber are simpler, and one ends updriving around the corner, much like onedoes in the first part of the esses. In races, however, the wide variety of lines possi-

ble will make this a fun-for-spectatorspassing area. The width of the exit ofNamerow (still downhill) will allow for avariety of entry lines into the corner, but itis who is first out of Pad-dock Bend thatwill count.

The main straight is wider, a more evengrade, and drives shorter. Exiting Paddock

Bend throws one out to the inside of thetrack (away from the pits). Thus, one hasto cross back over to set up for cornersone, the "phantom" corner 2, and Diable. Here again, the look is very similar to theold corners - although there is now a chi-cane, which I did not try. I had the mostdifficulty with these corners as all my oldreference points were gone, and whatseems to be the fast line doesn't use thewhole track. The track is definitely wider, and the runoffs remove some of that"We're on the 323 north of Lac des Pla-ges" feel that this segment of the trackhad.

The Esses (corners four and five) seemedpretty much the same to me - except thecamber is gone (or seems to be) so moretrail-braking is needed. When I ran thetrack the curbing was not yet installed, soone could not go through here veryaggressively (the event was a drivingschool). The exit has a whole new look, inthat one can see cars flying down thebackstraight. All over the track, sightlineshave been improved.

Corner 6, the sweeper, is visually differ-ent as the exit joins the new connectorsegment. The connector allows for a sec-ond short course. I understandthis second course, which hasits own pit on the back straight, isn't that exciting.

Corner 7 remains as it was afterrepave-ment a few years ago, although I think there is morerunoff now at corner exit (Iwasn't really looking).

The Carrousel is the same, butdifferent. The fresh pavement, especially in the braking zone, allows a lot of trail braking,

with the result that more speedcan be comfortably carriedthrough this corner.

The back straight seems identi-cal, although, like everywhereon the track, it is wider. Thesecond set of pits on the insideof straight gives a differentlook.

The sweeper at the end of thestraight and the gulch turn feelpretty much the same. The

track has extra width and is smoother inmaking elevation transitions - althoughthis may have been an illusion - howeverthe transition from the Gulch into theBridge turn felt like a smoothly increasingslope, and not the immediate "you aredriving up a wall" feel of before.

The Bridge Turn now has usable pave-

ment at corner exit, but the kink feelssharper. The following straight is aboutthe same, although the pedestrian over-pass isn't there anymore.

Braking into Namerow is uphill, but forlack of better term, more consistent thanthe old turn. The uphill is all on the sameangle, and at the top there is one change inelevation - whereas the old Namerowseemed to have three to five different ele-vation changes, depending on whether onewas trying to go inside or not!

Thus one finishes a lap of the new Mont-

Tremblant. Overall, the track is wider, smoother in transitions, with more runoffsand bigger sight lines. Similar commentscan be made about the "new" Mosport -except I've heard that the line at the "new"Mosport hasn't changed. This isn't quitethe case for the new Mont-Tremblant. I'veavoided giving a specific line, as I, likemost people in attendance that weekenddrove the track with a pre-conceivednotion of the "old" Mont-Tremblant inmind. What works best on the "new"Mont-Tremblant, especially in racing, remains for you to discover.Enjoy!

    My Canaska CupWeekend

    by Richard Muise

I wasn't able to find time last year to getmy marshal license, but at last year's Can-

aska Cup, I made a promise to myselfthat I would have one for the 2001 raceweekend. During this past spring, I tookthe courses, wrote the test, and put out thefires. I did get my license, but with onlyhours to spare; I was handed my licenseand blank workers log Friday morning atthe Shannonville track. The Canaska Cup weekend started with aday of working in the registration hutwith Sherissa and her capable crew. Thedrivers, crew and workers trickled inthroughout the day while the track wasopen for testing and tuning.

Saturday was my first big day. I was inthe Bytek VW Beetle Pace Car with KenBaird. My responsibilities were to opera-tor the radios while Ken drove. Saturdaymorning was quiet, with only practiceand qualifying. We asked permission totake our one reconnaissance lap of thetrack, purely to test the car handling yousee. Saturday afternoon was the firstraces, our first pace laps.

Two minutes before the field was let gofrom mock grid, Ken would drive out tocorner-1 and park. When the zero timearrived, the cars would start to stream out

of the pits and we would start to moveslowly down the track with the intentionof picking up the field when all the carswere out of the mock grid. However, some of the series had enough cars thatwe would be on the Fabi straight before Iwould see the final car entering corner-2.

Other times, the cars would lag behind -"Hey come on guys/gals, show someaggression and catch up with the pacecar!"

I was twisted nearly completely around inthe passenger seat watching out the rearwindow, one hand on the radio controls -"Control, Pace car has the field" - the

other hand desperately clamped aroundthe handhold above the window. Downthe long back straight, the cars behindswaying back and forth warming the tires.Starting to speed up a little, and brakedown through corner at the end of thestraight, the cars behind start to form upin two rows. Believe me, there's nothingquite as glorious as watching a field ofFormula cars forming up only 20 feetbehind you!

Down through the S-curves, and into thesharp left hander, the car leans way overas Ken guns it to pull into the pits. At this

corner, I turn off the roof lights, and Kenpulls over to the pit entrance, the fieldroars past us on the other side of the pitwall to take the green flag.

Saturday had 3 races, therefore 3 pace

laps. There was only one incident thatlooked serious, two Formula cars tookeach other to the wall outside corner-1,hard against the tire barrier. Ken startedthe pace car up, but the call to gather upthe field didn't come, and soon the racewas over. It took 20 to 30 minutes to getthe tires put back.

Sunday had 6 races, including the head-liner Canada GT Challenge Cup. TheCGTCC race was the only one that dif-fered for the pace car. We had to main-tain a 100kmph speed in the pace car, which was apparently mandated in therules. And there was one lap with thepace car, and one self-paced lap beforegetting the green from Jennifer and Ryan.

As with the previous day, there wasn'tmuch activity with the pace car, all racingincidents handled either after the racewas over, or by localized rescue crews.

I highly encourage others in MCO to gettheir marshal license. The experience isgratifying, and you can't get closer to theaction unless you are actually in the race! All regional races need volunteers to run,and this is a great way to be involved.

    MCO Rally GroupNews, July 2001

    by Craig Hamm

This column is to inform MCO membersabout activities in the club's Rally Group.

Just because there have been no ralliessince June doesn't mean members havebeen idle. Already this year we have newcheckpoint boards, and a big cache ofnewly printed materials ready for a fewyears worth of rallies. Group membershave also been busy building rallies forALL to enjoy, and honing their owndriving skills.

Several Rally Group membersparticipated in the MCO PerformanceGround School. The instruction was topnotch, and unbeatable for the price. While

the techniques taught were demonstratedonly on tarmac, the principles apply toany surface and will improve any driver'sskill. Hats off to the organisers!

Tony Lai competed in the recent Bancroftrally sprint. His review appears in thisissue of The Link.

Jim Morrow and Jodie Shay (a soon to bemember) have been diligently mapping, measuring, and driving a new drivex rally.Jodie, new to rallying, has taken the bullby the horns as routemaster, and we trust

he will be a valuable member as he learnsthe ropes of rally design. The route isapproximately 260 km, purportedlythrough some stunning backcountry, androads to challenge drivers at all skilllevels. Target mid-September for thisevent.

Yours truly has been building a new rallyof approx. 200 km. The rally completes a

loop around Mississippi Lake and will besuitable for beginners with a good mix ofloose surface to tarmac. This drivex eventwill be more technical than the TotallySilly Drive rally of June 9 and willcontain a few 'clever' instructions . . .People really enjoyed the Silly Drive rallyand this one will surely challenge theentrants. Don't miss this one, not too farfrom home, and it won't break your car soget out there!

Jaak Laan has been building a rally routeeast of Ottawa. This is another verybeginner friendly rally, and will be funwhen it comes on stream.

Last year's Lanark County HighlandsRally, by Morrow and Laan, will likely berun this autumn, with some modificationsto last year's route and all checkpointlocations. I ran in this event last year, andit was a real blast. Plan for a great Sundaydrive through magnificent country beforethe short winter days set in.

As you can see from the above, we arecreating a bank of rallies so that in 2002MCO can have a Club Rally Series. Inorder to qualify for points competitorswill have to volunteer during at least oneor two rally events.

The Group will implement a classstructure in MCO rallies. The intent is to

encourage newcomers into the sport whocannot afford rally computers, andprogrammable calculators/laptops, orsimply want to compete seat-of-the-pants(SOP). Currently, no distinction is madebetween competitors running SOP or withthousand dollar rally computers, puttingthe budget minded and/or beginer at aclear disadvantage.

Since the last issue of The Link we havesetup a MCO Rally Group discussionboard through Yahoo! Groups. Thepurpose of this web-based group is toenhance communication, on a daily basis, between MCO rally enthusiasts. It isNOT the intent to compete with the MCOwebsite, the OFFICIAL source of rallyinformation in the club. Drop in at URLhttp://groups.yahoo.com/mco_rally_groupand ask to join us. Currently, the group ismoderated so that your email inbox won'tget too clogged up with idle chitchat.

Several teams are running in the SMCC(Montreal) Mid-Summer's Night Rally 28July, run from Oka. We are lookingforward to building a spirit of cooperationbetween our two clubs. Teams are alsoassembling for an MCO assault (!) on theUpper Canada Car Rally (Ontario RoadRally C'ship) for 22 Sept., run by TorontoAutosport Club. Some members maymake it to Markham for the 26 AugustCustom Inspection Guages Rally, put onby Maple Leaf Rally Club. Both ralliesare approximately 200 km length withinstructions tailored to all levels ofexperience.

Finally, several Group members areplanning to spectate at Charlevoix in earlyNovember. Next year this will likely beon the WRC circuit, this is the big time!Several members will volunteer at the Tall

Pines performance rally in late NovemberJoin us, and get CLOSE to some fast andfurious rally action.

    THE PRESIDENT'SREPORT...

And on the seventh day, werestedThe Motorsport Club ofOttawa's Canaska Cup race weekendis over for 2001. Phew! Myappreciation and admiration for ALLof the people who made our raceweekend a SUCCESS is unbridled.Without question, it was a truly wellorganized and professionally runevent. Many people have gone out oftheir way to covey that sentimentwhich, personally, has been gratifying.

As you are all too aware, I lovenaming NAMES, but I shall refrain, for I will miss someone, leaving meall 'akimbo'. However, letters havebeen sent to each of our sponsorsthanking them for their trulymunificent support; along with 'thank-yous', both verbal and written havealso been sent to all workers. And, aspecial thanks to Helen Z.

Of course, your Canaska CupCommittee comprised of CindyArmstrong, Robert Benson, BasilChiu, Robert and Sherissa Microys, and yours truly. We worked verywell together as a team and we werefortunate to enjoy the fruits of many

talented and hard-working individualswho stepped up the plate andcollectively hit some home runs. Infact, one of the more frequent wordsof feedback I heard was MCO'sincredible depth of experience andprofessionalism - which quite franklyis hardly surprising given our lengthyhistory.

Now that 'we are experienced' in thewords of the late Jimi Hendrix, we canand will DO better. Your committeehas already met to begin preparations

    for next year.

One brutish question, of course, isalways centered on money! How didwe do financially? Our eminentTreasurer shall publish the finalnumbers, but allow me to say we lostmoney.

Why? Two reasons essentially. First, despite a very strong turnout of entries(115) in these economically turbulenttimes of reduced entries, we were

down from our perhaps optimisticforecast (predicated on last year'snumbers); and second, a verygenerous, and in my opinion, in noway regrettable 'care and feeding'package' for the workers - an area wecan continue to cultivate.

Another variable is the levy we payper entry to CASC. While not entirelysettled as we go to press, herewith thegist: the Ontario Race Organizing(ORO) committee, on which I sit, unanimously agreed at the start of theseason, to contribute to the WorkerRecruitment and Retention Committee(WRRC) to the tune of $500.00 perevent. As well, however, we alsoagreed to an additional $10.00 perentrant levy for the same thing, whichhas been a topic of some discussion bythe ORO. That $10.00 levy, it shouldbe mentioned, was collected as part ofeach entrant's registration fee.

My take on the 'care-and-feeding'package' for workers is that we muststrive to ensure the workers feel welland truly taken care of. I amconfident that was the case at theCanaska Cup weekend; judging fromthe positive feedback I havepersonally received. It is an area wecan review from a financialperspective for next year, withoutjeopardizing, what I think, was abenchmark in this sort of thing.

In any event, lets not diminish for amoment, the quite incredibleaccomplishment and success we haveearned - not only amongst ourselves-but also throughout the ORO and racecommunity at large.

'We done good'. We shall do betternext year, of that I am certain.-rpw

    BancroftRallysprint Report

    by Tony Lai

    Hi Y'All,

Here's a field report from Saturday'sRallySprint. It was a hoot!

The Place: Bancroft was not so faraway - a scenic 2 hours from WestCarleton.

The Venue: despite its name, thegravel pit was mostly hard-packedsand - well, hard-packed before thecars started running, at least. Myrear-wheel drive unruly beast onhockey-puck street tires was severelytraction-challenged. A set of snow

tires would have helped get somepower down.

The Course: shaped like a pretzel, with probably a 20-foot elevationchange. The best part was flooring itin 2nd to make it up the hill, crankingthe steering for the sharp right-hander,opposite lock to keep the tail fromleaving the timezone, a dash into 3rdbefore the chicane, avoid the pylons, and then squirting thru to the finish.Eeeeee-Aaaawww!

The Equipment: just like Solo2, nospecial equipment needed - only ahelmet for your noggin. The course isnot a car-breaker; somebody fromToronto brought their new WRX(nudge, wink, hint, hint).

The Action: my arms have nevermoved so frantically - arcade-gradefrenzy in a real-life car!

The Pitch: anyone who hasdaydreamed about runningperformance rally **MUST** give

    this a try!

Next Event: doubleheader August18/19. The beast will be back todefend its slowest-times-of-the-day(but still first-in-class and one heck ofa cool trophy!!!)

On September 15, 2001, the Motor-port Club of Ottawa will be pre-

hope to start the series next year.)

The Rally Group went further afieldhis time in search of great roads for

your driving pleasure. The rally iset in the hills and forest around

    Golden Lake (near Eganville) over

223.95 km of stages. The routenstructions are built at two levels:dead simple for beginners and avery interesting set of experts'nstructions (no tricks or delib-erateonfusion but both the driver andhe navigator better be on their

The Midsummer's Night Rallyby Jim Morrow

When we set up the MCO Rally Group, our primaryfocus was to bring more rallies to the MCO and toincrease participation through awareness.

One initiative was to have dedicated meetings once amonth where the MCO sub-group of enthusiastscould meet to scheme and plot. Another was to setup an e-mail post site for pure Rally chatter. Well, it

worked! We've made contact with an ex-president ofthe old Ottawa Rally Club (who now "lurks" on oursite), and with Paulo Nunes, President of the SportsMotor Car Club (SMCC) out of Montreal.

Paulo's a great guy (he likes Rallying) and heextended an invitation to our group to compete in theSMCC "Midsummer's Night Rally". The Rally ranout of Pointe-Calumet (Paulo's house) and finishedup some 150 km later in St-Eustache. We were madeto feel very welcome and were treated to a BBQ onarrival, then had a chance to meet 20 Quebec teamsin the ensuing socializing.

The roads were great; all except 13 km were pavedand the limit on the twisty secondary roads was 90km/hr. The first car left at 8:01 p.m. and the last carfinished at about 12:11 a.m. at the restaurant in St-Eustache.

This was one of the dreaded "Navigational"ralliesand at night, but the instructions were goodso we did fairly well. Because none of us wouldadmit to running in Nav rallies before, we weregraciously placed in Beginner's classsame

instructions as the experts, but in our own group of15 cars.

I navigated for Jeannie (first time driving) in mySubaru; Craig Hamm piloted the CDC team Corollawith Paul Acacia (first time ever); and Jodie Shay(who joined the MCO in August) drove the Nissanwith Sonya Howard navigating. Craig pushed his oldCorolla to tenth; Jodie brought his Nissan in fifth;and Jeannie, I am proud to say, brought us in secondin class and about seventh overall.

We all had a fantastic time. My congratulations toPaulo and his crew for running a great rally!

Before the event, I was speaking with Paulo aboutthe TSD rally that we're going to be running out ofGolden Lake on Saturday, September 15, and he saidthat he'd like to run it. I had basically the sameconversation with Ronald Woltman, our excellentpresident, who also would like to run in therallythe battle of the presidents! I'm thinkingevery right-minded club member is going to want toget out and drive the same roads as these two titans.

    We'll reserve space for everyone.

We just finished a preliminary run-through of therally and basic route set-up. It's 224 km of reallygood driving roads. Several of them have such abeautiful rhythm that it's well nigh impossible toslow down enough to run the average speeds. We'recalling it the Golden Pine Rally and have a reallyspecial prize package for the winners.
