Chinese Antiques Market Booming!!!£2000 for Blue and White Chinese Jar

£1300 for Chinese SceptreThe rapid growth of the Chinese economy over the last few years has now resulted in a massive demand for good quality Chinese antiques, with many of the better off Chinese attempting to buy back some of their” heritage”, in other words, some of the high quality items historically exported/ plundered over the last four hundred years.

It is this rapidly increasing demand that has caused a continual upsurge in prices at antique auctions all over the UK, with some of the buyers being Chinese based in China and others all over the world. It is also the development of the internet, which has resulted in many auctioneers, becoming truly international, including Gerrards, where their Chinese sales have recently grown in value and volume, for example, the Chinese Blue and White Jar and Chinese Ruyi Sceptre, featured in the two photographs, would have fetched a few hundred pounds a year ago.

So, if you have any pieces of Chinese porcelain or other interesting Chinese items (and most of us have something like this in a cupboard or in the attic), now is the time to let the experts at Gerrards have a look at it, to see if you can take advantage of the current trend, by placing it in auction, with a protective reserve price.

Chinese, Large Porcelain Jar, painted in underglaze blue, with scrolling lotus foliage, within ruyi lappet borders, 36cms high, in excellent condition. Sold for £2000 to buyer in the UK Aug 2011

Ancient Chinese Ruyi, Bronze and Carved Jade Sceptre, dating from the Han Dynasty, the bronze rod has creatures shown in relief. Sold for £1300 to buyer in the USA Sept 2011

15th March 2012

Hello and welcome to the March edition of lINK-Magazine.

I hope you’re well as I know the weather has been cold of late. I’m sure that, like me, your heating bill is through the roof and your garden is in dire need of attention. However we can all look forward to the mild spring weather. Fast approaching is Mother’s Day on the 18th March, followed closely by Easter in early April. Both are causes for celebration I’m sure you will agree.

I’d just like to mention Make a Dream who, since our last edition, have raised over £11,000. Everybody at lINK-Magazine would like to say a huge thank you to all those who donated, and to those who also joined the Facebook group.

look out for your chance to WIN TWO FrEE Tickets to watch McFly and The Wanted at Blackpool’s Festival Headland event. You can find out how to enter inside the magazine.

And congratulations to the winners of last month’s competitions. Brenda Shaw won our Where Am I? competition, so well done - £50 is on its way to you! Also, Judith Brady and Mr Parker won the James Jackson WIN Your MOT draw. A pat on the back to you both!

Don’t forget, lINK-Magazine also offers competitive leaflet distribution for up to 96,000 homes and businesses across the Fylde Coast, as well as offering FrEE What’s On listings for most local events. lINK-Magazine is your local community & business directory.

THE WANTED AND MCFLY ANNOUNCE MASSIVE CONCERT FOR BLACKPOOLThe Wanted and McFly are to headline an exclusive dual-headline concert on Blackpool’s brand new Tower Festival Headland on Sunday 24th June. The concert, which brings together two of the country’s biggest boybands at the UK’s newest open air venue, is presented by promoters Cuffe & Taylor in association with Marketing Blackpool.

The Wanted and McFly are two of Britain’s most popular bands, with certified gold and double platinum albums respectively. McFly have recently hit the headlines again after members Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd both won reality TV contests in 2011, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Strictly Come Dancing. Harry Judd will return to Blackpool after winning the show’s final at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The Wanted have been enjoying great chart success and have recently been touring in America. They embark on their first sold out UK Arena tour next month.

Event organisers Cuffe & Taylor, already known in the area for hosting the popular Lytham Proms Festival Weekend, will be working alongside Marketing Blackpool. The new venture will see Blackpool welcome some of music’s most popular acts to the Tower Festival Headland.

The event coincides with the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Blackpool on Friday 22nd June. Following the arrival of the Olympic Torch, an Evening Celebration will take place on the Tower Festival Headland.

A spokesperson for event organisers Cuffe & Taylor said: “We are thrilled to be hosting music concerts in the heart of Blackpool. We are a local company and can’t wait to be part of this exciting venture working with Marketing Blackpool. The Wanted and McFly are hugely popular and to have them both headlining at the same concert will be a great day.”

Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, comments, “We are pleased to announce that we will be working with Cuffe & Taylor on this concert, bringing two of the biggest

boybands around to the Tower Festival Headland. Marketing Blackpool have a proud track record of staging fantastic events in the resort and this partnership with Cuffe & Taylor will allow us to share knowledge and expertise to stage a stunning show which will attract many visitors to the resort.”

The concerts will be a huge boost to the town in Summer 2012. Customers can purchase either concerts tickets or a package ticket, which includes entry into a Blackpool attraction of their choice and queue jump for the concert. Tickets go on sale Friday 27th January at 9am.

Tickets are available at £29.50. Tickets are available from www.ticketline.co.uk or by calling 0844 888 9991. Concert only tickets can also be purchased in person from Blackpool Tourist Information Centre at the new Festival House on the Tower Festival Headland, by calling 01253 478222 or online at www.visitblackpoolshop.co.uk

The lovely still weather of February made for some superb sunsets at Cleveleys with hundreds of different photos being taken, many of them ending up on the Visit Cleveleys Facebook page. You can feel the place starting to stretch ready for the season now the days are getting longer.

In the town centre, M&Co have confirmed that they are starting work on Victoria Market in the coming months, and plans have been submitted for half of the children’s/men’s store to be an amusement arcade. The Traders group are busy organising events for this year, with a Classic Car show pencilled in for 19 August, plus more besides.

The new Sainsbury’s Local is open in the old Nursery World building, good news for that end of the high street, and over at Thornton consultation is underway for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket. Convenient for local people, plus it comes with a petrol station and cafe.

If you’ve got a business in the Thornton Cleveleys or Wyre area, why don’t you come to the next Wyred Up event? It’s on 14 March at Rossall School from 3pm. Everyone is welcome, no matter what size of business you have, and you can hear from Seniors who won Fish & Chip Shop of the Year, and Parkinsons who are building the new Coastguard tower at Rossall Point. Just register at www.wyredup.co.uk

If you’ve got anything to tell us just email [email protected] or ring 07932 143431.

Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC have started 2012 as they left 2011 with some great performances to keep the spectators entertained. Sadly the weather has taken a turn for the worse and that cold snap meant a number of games were postponed due to the frozen ground.

However, there have been a number of games played by both Thornton-Cleveleys teams and all have produced the same outcome...a Thornton-Cleveleys win!

In the league the 1st team faced their toughest opposition, 2nd placed Eccles at home. Under the watchful eyes of the ever enthusiastic supporters, the lads ensured they kept their winning streak intact by beating Eccles 26 - 5. The game was considerably tighter than the scoreline suggests and at times the game could have gone either way, Thornton-Cleveleys just digging their studs in that little bit deeper to produce the goods. The 1sts stand proud at the top of Division 3 North in the University of Salford Leagues after 17 games played.

The 1st team progressed well in the Raging Bull Trophy, their 2nd round match-up away to Oldham ended in a 3 - 26 victory for the travelling side. But in the 3rd round they played Manchester side De La Salle at home. In a very physical and tough game the score ended 3 - 3 but sadly, on a ruling, Thornton-Cleveleys dropped out of the trophy because they had the home advantage and didn’t take it. The lads can hold their heads high knowing they went out on a technicality and still remain unbeaten this season.

The 2nd team have played two more league games since the last print and were successful in both encounters.

Both games were played at home and they first faced Colne who they convincing dispatched 48 - 0. Their second tie came against a travelling Bolton side, a strong outfit arrived to tackle the lads but the 2nds provided a strong performance and finished with a 31 - 14 triumph.

The 2nds sit 4th after 15 games in Division 5 North. The 2nd team also progressed well in their respective cup competition, the Raging Bull Plate. Their 1st round victory came away against Clitheroe which the 2nds won 0 - 40. The 2nd round drew a home fixture against Burnley and a 36 - 7 win progressed them to the next round. The 2nds played Macclesfield at home in the 3rd round but came unstuck in an enthralling game that ended 43 - 59! Good effort guys.

Games are played on Saturdays at Thornton YMCA and kick off at 2.15pm but from March change to a later time of 3pm. Training times are 6.45pm - 8.30pm, Mondays and Wednesdays. Check the website www.thorntonrugby.com for more details.

Hopefully there won’t be anymore games postponed this season but any downside can be turned around at Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC. I’m sure the girls at Windmill Laundrette will be glad of a break from washing the team kits anyway! My Mum always said “stop rolling around on your knees, you can’t get grass stains out!” but somehow you girls manage it! Thanks to you all.

Now the Six Nations is well and truly underway why not get yourselves down to Thornton YMCA and watch the games in a friendly atmosphere? There’s a massive 60 inch TV, plenty of refreshments and a whole load of international banter!

Lake District Adventure WeekA residential week at Water Park, a fabulous outdoor adventure centre on the shores of Coniston Water in the Lake District, was the way children from Years 4, 5 and 6 at Thornton Primary school started the New Year.

The week was action packed from start to finish and included team building games, initiative exercises and problem solving activities, in the grounds of Water Park and the surrounding countryside, and an array of other sports and activities.

The children were divided into different groups, named after local mountains and fells, and had the opportunity to take part in lots of amazing events. These ranged from ghyll scrambling, canoeing, journey days, kayaking, climbing walls, orienteering and abseiling to climbing the pampas pole or being hoisted up the Peter Pan tree.

We were joined at the Water Park by our new head teacher, Mrs Clements, who eagerly joined in and was soon hoisted into a nearby tree!

The weather was fabulous and the food was delicious to come back to after a long and exhausting – but equally amazing – days adventures.

After the evening meal - and after the children had washed the pots and set the table for breakfast! - the evenings activities began. The Water Park staff devised

games where the teams worked together to find aliens lurking in the Water Park’s grounds and had to report back to the central point with each aliens name and number. The following night, again working on team building skills, the teams played man hunt, where three teams had to hide and one team had to search for them. The grounds at Water Park are enormous, so the challenge was huge – it was also very dark and at times quite scary. The children were all very brave and worked together amazingly well to locate the other teams.

A tremendous, yet tiring, time was had by all the children and staff and no-one wanted to go home. Although, the staff and lucky children in Year 4 will get the chance to go again in 2014 – we can’t wait.

Paul Gailey ‘Diary of a local Councillor’

Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a

weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Monday: As many people know I am a great fan of plants and trees, they make such a difference to an area. However, what I’m not a fan of is weeds! Anchorsholme has a problem with weeds taking over pathways and pavements. Today I had a walk around the area to see how large the issue is. In March a weed killing programme will start and if your area has an issue with weeds or you know of a place that needs working on then please contact me and I’ll arrange for them to be dealt with. In the evening I attended the Sandhurst Area Forum at Anchorsholme All Saints Church. The Forum brings together the people of Anchorsholme, Norbreck and Bispham with different support agencies and the Emergency Services so that different needs and requirements can be discussed. Tonights meeting saw an excellent presentation by Age Concern Blackpool (will soon become AgeUK). They listed the range of services available, from heating advice, advice on the trustworthy building contractors in the area and they have a befriending service, so if you are alone and isolated they will put you in touch with other people. They also run a hospital aftercare service as well as providing Activity Boxes for people suffering with dementia, these boxes are designed to stimulate the memory of the sufferer. I was really impressed with the support they provide, if anyone wants any more details, please contact me or contact Age Concern Blackpool on 01253 622812. We also had a presentation from the Police and NHS about the new non emergency numbers they have launched. The Police have launched 101 which can be used if you want to contact the police about an update or if you want some general advice (any doubts do not be put of by ringing 999 though). The NHS have launched 111 for any non emergency health questions or advice (again any doubts just ring 999).

Tuesday: In the morning Councillor Williams and I had a brief catch up to discuss the closure of the lauderdale crossing. In a recent Council meeting it was decided to close the crossing despite everyones best efforts to save it. It is very annoying that the views of local residents and the emergency services have been ignored. Councillor Williams and myself will do all we can to keep the crossing open and if we lose that battle will reopen it one day. In the afternoon, I attended a meeting with a resident over an issue to do with a dropped curb. In the evening we had the Friends of Eastpines Park meeting, I can confirm that our Easter Fair will be on Saturday 7th April 12pm – 3pm. We are raising money for the new water feature we want to build in the park and new play equipment for the park. We are still at the planning stage on this but if anyone wants to help volunteer on the day or knows anyone that runs a

farmers market or stall that wants to be involved please let me know, we want to try make it a really vibrant day on the park with lots of stalls and fun events for everyone.

Wednesday: In the morning I called the Bingo at St Teresa’s Church Hall. It’s a great group and if anyone wants to join you will be more than welcome, it’s every Wednesday morning from 10am – 12pm. Another good Bingo Group in Anchorsholme is the Over 50’s Club at Sevenoaks Community Centre this meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, again you will be made very welcome here as the people there are great fun and will make you feel at home. In the afternoon I had a meeting about Anchorsholme Park, I can now confirm the first meeting of the new Friends of Anchorsholme Park will be Monday 27th February at the Briardene Hotel. I’m very excited about this group and what it will achieve, if you care about Anchorsholme Park and want to help in it’s rebuilding then please come along to the first meeting, together I know we can transform the park and you will be made very welcome. If you can’t make it but want to be involved please call me on: 01253 826679.

Thursday: On the first Thursday of every month, at 6pm I hold my surgery at All Saints Church on valeway Avenue. It’s a brilliant opportunity to meet residents and discuss any issues and concerns they have. I appreciated the residents that came out on a very cold evening to meet me. Anyone is welcome so if you’d like to come along next month then please feel free to do so.

Friday: Today I worked at my recruitment agency and in the afternoon we had a meeting about supporting the local Scout group with some of our ward budget, I’m pleased to say that Anchorsholme Cubs will now be fully supported with some new equipment as the result of that meeting. I’m a big believer that groups like the Cubs, the Scouts, the Guides, sports clubs etc do a great job in giving children guidance, direction and discipline that will help them become better adults. We have two great primary schools in Anchorsholme with Anchorsholme Primary and St Teresa’s and it’s important we provide plenty of opportunities for children outside of school hours, so if there are any youth groups in Anchorsholme that you know are struggling let me know and I’ll try my best to help.

Saturday: This morning Councillor Williams and I held our monthly catch up meeting where we discuss issues and what matters need to be dealt with during the forthcoming month. In the afternoon I caught up with some decorating work.

Sunday: After church this morning, my girlfriend and I walked up to the junction of Anchorsholme lane and luton road to see what progress has been made on the new Anchorsholme Gateway that Councillor Williams and me have been building. Along with the councils help and the opinions of local residents, this small plot of land is now turning into a really lovely place. We have installed a “Welcome to Anchorsholme” sign, a rockery, and a curved path that emphasises the trees that were already there. Alongside the other improvements, we are adding a selection of shrubs, a new bin and a new bench. If you’re passing the area on the Number 9 bus, then please look out for it. It really is an eye catching piece of work and is all part of our plan to make Anchorsholme a great place to live with a unique identity of it’s own.

Many thanks Paul Galley Councillor for Anchorsholme
