Turn your hall into a star feature of your home - add a red carpet if you really want to join the glitterati - and just wait for the compliments for your 'award winning' taste.

Y ou could transform your own 'entrance' into a star feature by giving the hallway of your home a 'make-over'."Turning on the style in a hall couldn't be more important," says interiors expert, Andrea Maflin for Fun On

The Floor, an association of carpet specialists. "After all, a hall is the first space visitors encounter and its décor sets the tone for the whole home." All too often though, hallways wouldn't win any prizes for their décor as they're dowdy, neglected areas, collecting only clutter and debris rather than admiring glances as family and visitors pass through them. "But these days halls and glamour should go together," stresses Maflin. "It's easy to get a fabulous 'welcome home' feeling with a thick, velvet pile carpet, perhaps in a stunning, bold colour such as 'red-carpet' red.

Naturally, halls have to accommodate practical details such as storage but that needn't limit the scope for imaginative effects, says Claire Hornby, creative stylist for Barker & Stonehouse. "This is an area where you really can stamp your personality. A hallway and stairs are the core of a home, and provide a link to all the other rooms, but you can afford to be bold with decor style and colour because it's not an area where you are going to sit and relax." So make sure your entrance makes you proud and welcome in the glamour by following our guide to halls of fame.

there's no need to hold back from making a statement. Use oversized accessories for drama such as a huge mirror or a striking chandelier.

“ ”

Be bold and make a statement!

Stage a floor show Think flooring before walls as it has a dramatic effect, especially in a hallway where the eye is naturally drawn downwards and to the key feature - usually the stairs. "Don't rush into a flooring choice," advises Maflin. "Mistakes can be expensive and it is more costly to change than paint or wallpaper. Generally, I'd use the same flooring for hall, landings and stairways as this will give continuity to the scheme." Hallway solutions: Poseurs would love their own 'red carpet' and Fun On The Floor has a classic, a Balta Christchurch Twist in True Red, £29 per square metre. But if you haven't got a celebrity budget, simply paint the stairs red! Louise Smith, Dulux colour and design manager says: "You can create a stylish stair runner easily using paint." She advises sanding stairs thoroughly first, then drawing the outline of the runner using a pencil and ruler. Masking tape along the edge should help ensure a sharp, accurate line when painting. Apply a coat of Dulux Multi-surface primer, £12.49 for 750ml, allow to dry thoroughly, and then use a deep red, Dulux Celebration, in non-drip gloss for wood and metal, £8.99 for 750ml.

Wonder walls Skinny, narrow, short or square: Rather like figures, hallways come in all shapes and sizes. But just as we use clothes to make the best of our appearance, paint and colour can also do a lot to 'trick the eye' and appear to alter the shape or size of this space. In a dark hall, for instance, enhance the light by using gloss paint on walls. Alternatively, bring a lofty ceiling down a peg or two by painting the area above a picture rail a warm shade, one which is darker than the walls below.

Let it

shine Lighting sets the mood in halls, says expert Sally Storey, design director at John Cullen. "Often hallways are narrow and can look dull but you can overcome that by featuring an oversized lantern or chandelier. Do ensure though that the light levels can be altered by having it on a dimmer switch," she advises. "In a long hallway avoid a central downlight, and instead use shallow wall lights or table lights to break up the space by providing a soft glow. Recessed downlights could create a wash of light on one wall." Hallway solutions: Marks & Spencer and Bhs both have an impressive array of eye-catching chandeliers to suit your budget and your taste.

Stunning

storage One of the easiest ways to add razzle-dazzle in a hallway is with a striking piece of furniture, from a wooden chest to a slim console table, and hanging a mirror above it will further enhance it.

Halls need eye candy

If you choose mirrored furniture as well as a large wall mirror you will easily maximise the feeling of light and space." In my view, it's hard to beat the glittering good looks of Graham & Green's Manhattan console table, £498, which is covered in multi-faceted mirrors. Complement it with the company's round bevelled wall mirror, £285.

Graham & Brown's Spirit collection also features lovely papers to suit a hallway, including a stylised floral range, Charm, £30 a roll.

Littlewoods' elegant French-style wooden console table, £179, available in silver, black or white finish

Hallway solutions: Colour and pattern are now essentials for suc-cessful rooms, and a hall could be an easy place to start experimenting with decorative papers.

I n that remarkable period from 1996 to August 2007, when the Halifax average house price zoomed from £63,900 to £199,600, many savers became convinced that it was. For a while, pensions trailed in property's slipstream.

There is also something transparent about regular rental income which pensions lack. Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) figures show buy-to-let mortgages increased from 3.5% of house purchase loans in 1999 to 28.9% in 2006. Since the housing-market peak in autumn 2007, however, sentiment has changed abruptly and confidence remains wobbly amid fears of a 'double dip' recession. Anyone who bought a home to earn income in February 2008 is facing a 12% decline in its value - which has probably wiped out much of their deposit before they begin the task of finding a tenant with a secure income. Two huge shadows have fallen across the image of buy-to-let as a safe investment. First, the debt solution comparison site IVA.com confirms a sharp rise in the number of property investors seeking serious debt advice. It reports a 53% leap in the number of investors struggling to pay creditors. Typical debts, it says, ranged from £163,000 to £201,000 - in all reported cases those saddled with property debt were middle-class professionals with big mortgage arrears. IVA.com director Terry Balfour says: "We have seen a near meltdown in the buy-to-let market, with a combination of rental arrears caused mainly by tenants losing their jobs, void periods and high fixed rate mortgages causing serious problems.

"While it is encouraging to see the total number of buy-to-let repossessions remain a relatively small percentage of the market, our experience is that when landlords do get into trouble, debt levels become very unmanageable. "Our biggest debt cases are currently solicitors - again, in buy-to-lets - which goes to show even professionals can get it seriously wrong," he adds. But the biggest wake-up call is the warning from Fergus and Judith Wilson, the former teachers who built a portfolio of 700 rented homes in Kent worth around £225 million at the peak.

“Buy-to-let is absolutely dead and will never return” Mr Wilson told The Guardian. The couple are selling down their portfolio after coming under financial pressure when nearly 100 properties, nearly 13% of the total, were occupied by tenants failing to pay all, or part of, their rent in October 2008. The Wilsons were saved largely by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which saw the Bank of England base rate slashed to 0.5% in March 2009. They now pay an average 2% interest on their massive loans, on a special deal with lenders who fear the huge portfolio will otherwise be dumped on their doorstep. If the base rate hits 3.5%, the Wilsons' vast mortgage repayments would exceed rental income.

Do bricks and mortar trump poorly-performing private pensions or low-rate ISA’s as a way of building a lump sum for old age?

A poorly performing economy forces most of us to consider how we spend our cash, and it often only takes a quick scan through the direct debit inventory, shopping list or - for the particularly organised - monthly budget

to see where 'swinging cuts' can be made. Sometimes, things don't need to be chopped at all. Instead, items can be replaced with a brand that offers better value. The same goes for larger items, including cars. Hyundai has had a better recession than most. Historically considered a value-for-money (aka budget) brand, the resulting badge snobbery has offered the Korean manufacturer little justice in the past. Of course, with budgets squeezed, the 'value brand' has been of considerably more interest to many it seems the 33,000 drivers who took advantage of the scrappage scheme to buy a new Hyundai found the quality to be up there with the big-name brands. This is a point driven home by the fact that, as used car market experts are nervously pointing out, many of the

drivers who purchased under scrappage don't intend to upgrade any time soon. Their new Hyundai is to see them right for a few years, with full advantage taken of the five-year warranty. A more emphatic recommendation is hard to find. Can 33,000 people be wrong? Probably, but judging from the quality of Hyundai's latest arrival, they certainly are not on this point.

hyundai iX35

FIRST DRIVE:

THE HYUNDAI IX35 follows the trend for family crossovers that combine the practicality and sensible proportions of hatchbacks with the high-rise driving position of SUVs. It's roomy as well, with a smart and stylish interior layout.

Initially available with a 2.0-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engine with the option of on-demand four-wheel with the diesel unit, a new 1.6-litre petrol and super-efficient 1.7-litre diesel unit are set to follow. These elements are to be expected from an eminently sensible, value-for-money proposition, but the cutting edge styling is perhaps not. It's a struggle to find an angle from which the iX35 suffers aesthetically. Granted, it's not supercar exotica, but it's more than a match for its European rivals and a shape drivers can be proud to be seen at the wheel of - an important factor when considering the 'badge snobbery' issue. Inside, there's a similar appeal. Build quality is strong and the interior layout smart and stylish. An attractive set of dials greets the driver and there are obvious nods towards occupant convenience; the window and door mirror switches are angled towards the driver for example (a trend that appears to be to comfort in the modern era what damped grab handles were to comfort in the previous decade). It's roomy, too. Headroom is naturally very good, but legroom in the rear is surprisingly generous and the boot is not short of potential. The iX35 does not feel particularly wide however; three adults across the rear bench may find things a little cosy. The sensible dimensions pay off in terms of road manners, however. Like all good crossovers it doesn't feel like a big car in town, but offers an excellent driving position with a genuinely commanding view. The 2.0-litre diesel unit provides evenly distributed

torque, making it an undemanding car to drive. Refined on the motorway and with a duly responsive and a well-behaved chassis on a B-road it's hard to find fault. The steering may be a little springy for some, with the wheel whipping around aggressively to the central position when emerging from a junction, but this does equate to a responsive feel. In terms of road-holding the four-wheel drive chassis has obvious benefits, but the two-wheel drive version is very capable.

The iX35's piece-de-resistance, however, is its equipment. Two trim levels are available, Style and Premium, with upgrade packages bringing sat-

nav, upgraded dials and a more powerful sound system.

Yet even the entry-level model gets heated front and rear seats, reversing sensors and Bluetooth amidst a long list. The upper grade, itself only a small additional financial commitment, gets a full length sunroof, dual-zone climate control keyless entry and auto-lights and wipers and more. At the iX35's asking price, that's a hard factor to ignore.

TCFC’s soccer academy is now attracting over 100 youngsters ages 8 an below Steve Spencer who heads up the academy puts this down to the professional style coaching on offer. develop their skills further with extra midweek sessions and organised football games. Age 4 to 7? Come down on a Saturday Morning from 10:00am there is no joining fee and your first session is free Contact Steve on 07896150498

Memory Lane Recognise Anyone? David Noden emailed in with this photo from the 1985/86 season “Please find attached an 'old' 2nd team group picture I promised some months ago, I think it was the from the beginning of the 1985/86 season. I'm on

the front row far left !! ... I only played for about two seasons before I left the area but I do recall that it was a most enjoyable experience with a great bunch of lads. Apart from Bob Chip', Peter, (third from right on the back row) and was it Gary, with the ginger hair !! .(good player and midfield dynamo !!) I don't remember any names so would you be so kind if you know or could find out the names of the team in the order they appear I would really appreciate it. This was taken before Billy Markham took over later that season. Hope this picture is a welcome addition and would appreciate any feedback ....Thanks and good luck to the club” David Noden Junior Round Up...Thornton Cleveleys Juniors Reflect on Successful SeasonH..TCFC Juniors along with their senior team counterparts are celebrating yet another successful season with both the Under 9s and 13s clinching their league titles Kev Hogarth who runs the Under 9s said the league title was a culmination of good coaching and great support from within the club Kev said “TCFC provided one of their best coaches to help me run the team in Colin Evans which gave me the best possible start they then provided support and training so that the children got the best possible start in the long junior football careers it's a real buzz around the club at the moment and we are confident of emulating our success next season” Andy Hulme who has recently taken charge of the Under 13s echoed Kev’s comments when he confirmed he never would have considered coaching had it not been for the support from within the club Andy said “I have been a parent within the team since my son Chris was 7 I never considered coaching or running a team but when Paul Hughes (club secretary) said the club would provide all the support and training I thought why not give it a go” Andy has drafted in Gary Rawcliffe who managed successful winning junior teams throughout the 90’s and up to 2005 and Gary was quick to point out the youngsters certainly have the ability to

bring more silverware to the club. TCFC juniors are relatively young club when it comes to Junior football they were formed in the early 80’s yet their honours list boast over 60 league an cup winning teams including the prestigious Lancashire county cup won by Steve Atkinson's winning side of 2001. Paul Hughes the clubs secretary puts the success down to young talent in the north Fylde area he said Thornton Cleveleys youngsters are amongst the most talented on the Fylde coast we know this because of the amount of children from the area playing at academy clubs However great players do not necessarily make great teams and that’s where the club steps in to provide support and training enabling their managers and coaches the opportunity to get the best from their teams. Uniquely TCFC teams grow stronger as they progress through the years Paul puts this down to reputation and respect the club has within the community he said “Our junior teams are amongst the most stable on the Fylde coast our parent base is extremely loyal seldom do we see our children moving to other clubs and we put this down to the great facilities we provide and the friendly atmosphere we create around the place” To join one of TCFC teams or to get involved call Paul on 07967196276 T.C.F.C Soccer Academy BOYS and GIRLS Where: Thornton Cleveleys FC When: Sat 10.00am Ages: 4 - 8 Cost: £2 for 90 mins
