It's a shore thing "A relaxed, coastal look will be ultra fashionable," says Marnie Janaway, head of home design for Sainsbury's. "The allure of the sea is strong this year, with all things nautical in vogue. Refresh a home with an airy Hamptons beach house palette of tranquil blues and understated neutrals. Tip: Paint floorboards in white, add New England-style white painted furniture, and add sea-blue shades in blinds, rugs and accessories for a holiday home look. Get the look: Get ship-shape with Sainsbury's blue and white striped cushions £6 each, throw, £10 from the Tu range, and a Beach huts framed print, £15.

Flower power "One of the strongest trends will be florals which have been given a modern-day shake-up," forecasts Sally Bendelow, head of Home Design for Marks & Spencer. "The new twist uses bold painted and large scale botanical prints. To make them look more contemporary we've mixed 3D florals with houndstooth and graduated stripe patterns."

Monochrome magic Black and white continues to be the sophisticated leader in décor trends. Suzanne Beechey, divisional homeware buying manager for Bhs, says: "The popularity of a monochrome colour palette has grown over the years. But to give the look more depth accessorise with bold colours. Lemons and limes really add a new dimension to this classic trend. Tip: Monochrome is an elegant foil for lush silks and velvets and sparkles when accessorised with metallic touches. FIRST DRIVE: CITROEN

The CITROEN DS3 IS STYLISH, WELL-EQUIPPED AND LUXURIOUS. PATTERNED CARPETS, COLOURED SEAT INLAYS AND DASHES OF CHROME ADD TO THE OVERALL UPMARKET FEEL.

I t has been some time since Mini could claim to have the market cornered for trendy city cars boasting both style and substance, but the fashionable high-streets currently dominated by the ever-expanding Mini range, the Alfa Romeo

Mito and the smaller but all-conquering Fiat 500 are about to become even more lively with the arrival of the Citroen DS3. When a production model resembles its concept predecessor so closely it is a sure sign that the manufacturer is about to try something new. With the C3 updated for the new decade and the recent arrival of the practical but creatively styled C3 Picasso taking care of the volume compact hatchback and compact MPV sector, the DS3 is a new attempt to break into the premium compact hatchback sector with a stylish, well-equipped and generally more luxurious model.

At first glance, Citroen appears to have cracked it. There are bold styling gestures that may or may not be immediately liked and that may or may not grow on car-buyers over time, but as a package the DS3 is every bit as attractive and arguably more forward thinking in its design than its rivals.

Unlike some of the competition the DS3 is not a modern take

on past glories. Attempting to be a design classic in its own right, the model can hardly be accused of trading on its name either. Car historians and Citroen fanatics may raise an eyebrow at the rekindling of the DS moniker, but the French manufacturer is not claiming the DS3 is a modern interpretation of the fifties style icon. The DS4 and DS5 models that will follow shortly will make no such claims, either.

DS3 MOTORING


The intention of the DS sub (or uber) brand is visible in the lack of Citroen chevrons on the rear. A special DS badge takes their place, marking the DS line-up out as a range in its own right. That said, the visual similarities to the Citroen C3 are present inside and out, but DS3 customers can expect a far greater degree of customisation from their cars. Citroen has retooled its factory especially to deal with two-tone bodywork and roof decals of the DS3. The basic layout of the DS3 interior is familiar from the standard new C3, but there are more than enough additions to make the luxury model feel just that. Dashboards can be specified in a range of colours and shapely interior panels are soft to touch and lined with more exuberant materials. Patterned carpets, coloured seat inlays and dashes of chrome add to the upmarket feel. Recessed dials are complimented with internally lit needles that jump into life when the engine starts. With the range-topping 154bhp turbocharged petrol engine drivers will also be met with an appealing, sporty exhaust note. The engine, the result of a partnership between Peugeot, Citroen and BMW proves well suited to the DS3 in 150 THP form, making the car feel far keener than the Citroen C3. The crisp gear change and responsive, well-weighted steering help, too. The suspension is firm and the DS3 can be chucked into bends with confidence, but it's also damped to deal with rougher surfaces even on the DSport model's 17-inch wheels. As a compromise between city driving and the open road it's hard to fault. The DS3 shouldn't prove a struggle to live with, either. The boot is very accommodating and, while the three-

door body naturally restricts access to the rear, it will suit for two adults over shorter journeys. The chunky B-pillar may spoil their view somewhat, but visibility from the driver's seat is very good and the front passenger benefits from a recessed glove compartment that allows extra legroom. Three trim levels - DSport, DStyle, DSign - are available dependant on engine choice and there are enough customisation opportunities to give the DS3 a truly bespoke feel. A 99g/km CO2 emitting model should also attract attention from fashionable city car fans. Tax-free status could be as appealing as the floating roof and LED running lamps. It is more than adequately equipped to tackle the competitive but lucrative premium small car segment in the styling stakes, but the DS3's enjoyable driving experience and neat packaging give it more than just high street chic.

T he Cordon Vert School has an unrivalled reputation for excellent, imaginative and innovative vegetarian cuisine, drawing on the variety of international flavours and

ingredients reflecting current trends in world cuisine with fresh and imaginative ideas. If you fancy trying out some of their vegetarian recipes, why not try the following?...

60g Camargue red rice 1 medium red onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 30 ml olive oil 1/2 tsp Ras el Hanout 20g sultanas 1 tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 tbsp mint, finely chopped 175g halloumi 4 sweet pointed red (Ramiro) peppers small bag of mixed leaves Heat the oven to 1900C/3750F/Gas 5. Cook the rice for 20 minutes and then rinse briefly with cold water and drain to ensure grains are separate. Saute the onion and garlic in 1 tbsp oil until soft, then add the Ras el Hanout and cook for a further 2 minutes.

Add the sultanas, herbs and rice and take off the heat. Cut 4 thick slices of halloumi (approximately 5 mm thick) and dry fry in a non stick pan until golden on each side. When cool enough to handle cut into small dice, and add to onion mixture. Cut off the top of the peppers and shake out the seeds. Then using a small spoon with a long handle or chopsticks, carefully pack the mixture into the pepper cavity. Place the peppers in a roasting tin, drizzle with the remaining oil and bake for 15 minutes until the skin of the peppers are just beginning to soften. To serve, slice each pepper into 3 portions and place on a bed of leaves.

F or many, changes in design are often made to accommodate the lack of time available to tend their garden. This can mean losing areas of lawn which are high maintenance and fiddly to mow, replacing perennial borders with

evergreens to add interest all year round, and introducing large all-year plants to containers rather than annuals which have to be changed from season to season. There are some who fear that a low-maintenance garden will become dull and colourless or simply a haven to paving slabs and concrete, but it doesn't have to be that way. Cottage gardens are probably out for the time-strapped gardener as they are generally teeming with plants which need some care, including annuals, perennials and roses and although they may look natural, they need an awful lot of cutting back and dead-heading.

Likewise, traditional formal gardens with the neatest of flower borders, bowling green lawns and carefully-clipped hedges require a lot of maintenance and time. You can, however, create a visually pleasing space which won't take huge amounts of time to tend if you plan carefully.

This time of the YEAR IS OFTEN THE TIME WHEN MANY GARDENERS PLAN WHAT TO GROW IN THEIR VEGETABLE AND FLOWER BORDERS AND LOOK INTO CHANGING THEIR GARDEN'S DESIGN.

DESIGN A TIME-SAVING GARDEN

Small, enclosed spaces are perfect for paving, which could be surrounded by raised beds, narrow borders and pots, so you can still experiment with planting but won't be weeding and digging for hours on end. You might include different textures to your hard landscaping to create interest, such as ceramics or cobbles. Raised beds can also offer casual seating and changes in level to an otherwise-featureless space. Low-maintenance larger gardens can be separated into compartments which can be screened from each other to provide surprises and changes in mood. Many ornamental grasses, including Stipa tenuissima and sedges (Carex), can be dotted at ground level in gravel or slate to provide texture to otherwise boring areas. Large single specimen plants of architectural interest, such as Japanese maples or phormiums, stand out if placed against uncluttered backdrops and can provide a far more pleasing picture than a series of smaller pots containing a variety of different plants. To reduce maintenance, use fences with climbing plants rather than hedges which need trimming, paths of gravel or bricks instead of grass ones

and self-watering hanging baskets instead of free-draining ones.

Don't make your flower borders too deep as you'll end up becoming a slave to weeding and watering. Use reliable ground cover plants such as cranesbill geranium to take up any visible soil space and mulch your borders and areas of bare ground to suppress weeds. Paved or decked areas, which are easy to keep tidy and weed-free, provide the hard landscaping for you to tend your surrounding plants, which ideally should include a selection of low maintenance flowering shrubs and evergreens.

TCFC LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PROMOTION RUN IN

T hornton Cleveleys FC retained top spot in the Sports 360 West Lancashire League Division 1 with four points from six in early March. Wyre Villa played hosts to Thornton and found themselves on the wrong side of a 3 – 1 defeat. Goals from Matthews, Langton and Warwick and a man of the match performance from Tom Didlock ensured they kept the pressure on their closest rivals in top spot heading in to their top of the table clash against Fleetwood Hesketh. March the 13th saw TCFC and their travelling band of supporters making the trip to Fleetwood Hesketh in the hope of taking all three points to extend their lead and make promotion almost a certainty. A game of two halves saw the two well matched sides share the spoils in a fiercely contested encounter .Anthony Warwick netting for Thornton and Chris Matthews producing a man of the match display. The only down side in another wise recent fantastic run of form was a 1 – 4 home defeat to Burnley Utd in the Presidents Cup with Anthony Warwick scoring the consolation goal. This result was possibly a blessing in disguise - as although a football cliché, it allows the New Bourne Park team to concentrate on their push to the West Lancs. Premier League. With only 6 games remaining and promotion for the second season running almost a guaranteed certainty, manager Mendonca was keen to point out that he is not taking things for granted. “We have shown this season that we can play attractive passing football but have also shown we are resilient enough to grind out a result as and when required and also have to maintain maximum concentration in each and every game we have left.” Looking towards the run in Mendonca also pointed out that the growing number of supporters that are coming to watch his team both home and away will be key to them joining the West Lancs elite “ At each home game we have noticed the numbers of people we have coming to support us has been increasing week on week .
