Award number 24 for Cleveleys Seafront The awards just keep on coming for the Cleveleys seafront scheme. Number 24 was picked up at the first ever North West Awards for Coastal Excellence, where the multi-million pound project took top honours in the Coastal Best Practice category. The transformation from run-down promenade to visually stunning sea defences is littered with examples of best practice - everything from the partnership forged between Birse Coastal and Wyre Borough Council to the setting up of a community steering group from the outset to consult with the council and flag up potential problems. To deal with environmental issues, all demolition materials were crushed or recycled to be re-used in the scheme and much of the construction was pre-cast to reduce pollution, waste and noise. And of course the work was completed ahead of schedule and to budget. Although the primary aim was always to build robust sea defences protecting

thousands of residents, the project took on a life of its own as public ideas were added to the mix. The resulting bonus was a much-praised visitor attraction that has regenerated the town centre and secured a number of national awards. Councillor Roger Berry, cabinet member for Wyre Borough Council with responsibility for sea defences, said: "This really is a success story for Wyre beyond what was ever imagined and a fine example of how much can be achieved when the community gets involved from the beginning. "We are now eagerly awaiting the completion of the Cleveleys Mythic Coastline next year, when themed public art work will add yet another dimension to this wonderful promenade of ours." Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Russell Forsyth, will officially accept Wyre's trophy before the full council meeting on Thursday evening.


Work starts at Thornton's Hawley Gardens Work has started on a major housing development in Thornton which has been named in memory of the late councillor and former Deputy Mayor Peter Hawley who passed away earlier this year. The Mayor of Wyre Councillor Russell Forsyth cut the first sod at Hawley Gardens last week to com-memorate this special occasion. It is a fitting tribute as Councillor Hawley was a leading figure in local regeneration and was instrumental in the redevelop-ment of the former ICI site transforming the area in his earlier role as Economy Portfolio Holder. Hawley Gardens will be home to 273 two, three and four bedroom houses developed by David Wilson Homes and Barratt Homes in partnership with NPL Estates and Wyre Borough Council. Photograph attached. New School Kit Sponsor

This year at Thornton Primary School our football season really got off to a bad start. First half of our kit went missing …then our football posts were condemned! The staff and children didn’t let this put them off in the slightest, as we arranged to play all our matches away and managed to scrape together enough kit to get through. This was when Mr Brown, father to Erin & Archie in Year 6 and Year 3 (both excellent and very enthusiastic members of our foot-ball team and training squad) and local business man Kev, from KPE Scaffolding tel: 07939058099, stepped in and came to our rescue.
